Unsporting: How Trans Activism and Science Denial are Destroying Sport

Rate this book
The face of female sports is changing.

Radical gender activists are using a pseudoscientific theory of human biology to hijack sports and subvert the long-established concepts of fair play — forcing women and girls to risk their safety, pushing them aside for male athletes using the excuse of “inclusivity.”

Anyone who questions this dogma risks being branded as a transphobe and having their social and professional lives “cancelled”.

In the new book, How Trans Activism and Science Denial are Destroying Sport, former Canadian track champion Linda Blade and renowned National Post columnist Barbara Kay, examine the dangers of gender ideology in sports. They document the attack on biological facts upon which the level playing field of sports rests.

Tackling issues few have the courage to say out loud, Unsporting shows the harm inflicted on female athletes, and identifies the institutions driving this movement.

What does the future hold for sports if biological reality is ignored? Blade answers that question, and concludes with a reasonable plan to reverse course.

If I was "trapped in a man's body" I wouldn't use that body to destroy women's sports, just saying.
—Your friendly neighbourhood lesbian

Linda Blade is a coach and the president of Athletics Alberta. She has a PhD in Kinesiology from Simon Fraser University, a Chartered Professional Coach designation in track and field, and is a former champion heptathlete. If anyone is qualified to talk about the differences between male and female bodies, it's Linda.

This is an absolutely excellent book that brilliantly summarises (with hundreds of citations) the problem with and impact of men identifying into women's sport categories.

With the Olympics in Tokyo coming up, we must make clear that we will absolutely not accept the medaling of men in women's categories, that this will shame the IOC, the host country, and the male athletes whose entitlement is costing women and girls their right to compete in spots that they have earned through years of hard work.

If you don't know anything about this issue, this is the book to read. If you do, this is the book to cite. I'm so honoured to call Linda a friend and as a fellow feminist I couldn't be more happy that she has been able to get this published.

This book addresses an extremely divisive issue from a perspective of self-evident scientific truths that every man and woman implicitly understands, despite the best efforts of extremist activists to obscure the issue. However, women and girls have been left to deal with the fallout after politicians and bureaucratic organizations sacrificed them to be considered "inclusive" by these activists. Dr. Blade is brave to stand up for women and girls in sports, and hopefully will inspire others to as well.

An interesting look into the how trying to be more inclusive towards gender ideology has encroached on the rights of women being able to compete fairly in sports. Traces things back to the research paper that was used to justify letting trans-women compete in the female division of the Olympics and proceeds to how different governing bodies have dealt with the contentious issue.

Some choice quotes that really sum up the issue -

"With zero consultation at the athlete and coach level, the International Olympic committee suddenly announced in 2015 that it had reached a "consensus on sex reassignment" which included the following provisions: those who transition from male to female are eligible to compete in the female category under the following conditions - the athlete must demonstrate that her total testosterone level in serum has been below 10 nanomolea per litre for at least 12 months prior to her first competition and the athlete's total testosterone level in serum must remain below 10 nanomoles per liter throughout the period of desired eligibility to compete in the female category. The key assumption underlying the ruling by the IOC is the reduction of testosterone levels is enough to level the playing field. By the testosterone level prescribed yourself identifying males of 10 nmol per litre is far higher than the female testosterone range of 0.52 to 2.4 nmol per liter.  And testosterone is merely one of thousands of variables that distinguish human males from females. The reduction of testosterone has a negligible impact on diminishing the many structural advantages adult human males enjoy, such as higher muscle mass, larger lungs and heart, greater capacity to carry oxygen in the blood, longer and stronger bones, and neural networks that offer enhanced reaction times. Under these rules, in other words, a female olympian could now be required to contend with a born male competitor who enjoys a host of advantages on a structural level. *But if the female athlete were to take testosterone supplements, simply to bring her levels up to those allowed in the self identifying male athlete comment she'd be the one disqualified for doping*.

"Doctor Emma Hilton, at the University of Manchester, offered a wonderful response to the column in a Twitter thread - "I think perhaps one of the most infuriating absences in this debate is the complete lack of acknowledgement that female sports categories are *themselves an inclusion measure* for females. All this analysis of prioritizing inclusivity and offering opportunities to disadvantaged people never seems to be applied to the people for whom the category exists". It's like they've been forgotten."

"If a boy with gender dysphoria feels uncomfortable on a boy's team, he must be moved to the other team so he can be made to feel comfortable by girls on the team. The rationale, we're told, is because this person was "born in the wrong body" and because" transwomen are women" . But if a gender dysphoric girl believes she is a boy? No problem. Girls teams will make her feel welcome on their team as well. The rationale this time? Because "sex and gender are two different things". This person is still biologically female, and therefore gets to play on a female team . We are told by the Canadian sport policymakers that biology is not a meaningful factor in competitive sport outcomes - or at least not meaningful enough to override the sacred principle of inclusion. Yet by strange coincidence, the current paradigm allows gender dysphoric athletes of both sexes to play in the only league that offers both of them the greater opportunity for success - the female category."

That last quote reminds me of the recent US decision to include transwomen in the draft - this decision told girls and women that the Biden administration has been aware the entire time that transwomen are men, however 'inclusion' supercedes women's rights and safety when it comes to apparently minor things like sports, bathrooms, domestic/sexual violence centeres, and jails. But when it comes to military imperialism, self-identification would suddenly become capable of being abused, and we can't have that!

Wonderful read in an era of madness

We need more clear thinking, concise reads like this in the public domain. A must read for every father who has a daughter.

Very proud to say that Linda Blade is a fellow Albertian/Canadian. I was already very into this topic when I heard about this book and I am so glad that I stumbled across it, from the origins of the movement to the motivation, to what is currently going on this covers it all.

It is wonderful to see science (legitimate, relevant, related science) standing up for women and that Ms. Blade tackled the specifics around sports. I have read a couple of other books on the wider phenomenon and I have to say that they just don't (and can't) cover details in the way that they need to be explored.

This is a book not only for women and girls but for society as a whole.

Three Cheers for Linda!

A MUST-READ for anyone who cares about women and girls, women's and girls' sports, and/or fairness. As a woman in her late 40s who's also a runner, I remember how my generation was among the first to benefit from Title IX, it was wonderful! But now that's all falling by the wayside as trans activism is taking sports, fair play, healthy competition, and all that comes with it away from us. Enough. Women and girls are losing out on opportunities abound, and in this book, Dr. Blade deftly and succinctly lays out not only the problem with this but also some solutions. Well-written, precise, and well-cited/source. Thank you.

I appreciated the extensive references and the detailed physiological analysis. I'm so glad someone of Linda Blade's qualifications and experience has weighed in so definitively on this topic.

My one concern with the book was the proposed solution of having two sports categories (open and female). Would that lead to women being injured if they chose to compete in the open category? But I imagine Dr. Blade would propose the open category to have protections to prevent female injury.

This is an elegantly written book about how trans activism has crept into sports policies worldwide, from the Olympic level on down to youth leagues. As the book explains, this has mostly been accomplished by stealth, without adequate (or any) consultation with biologists or with female athletes. It follows the trans takeover most closely in the world of Canadian sports, where the author is from. However, many relevant facts from around the world are also included. I've been fighting for women-only sports for years, and there were bits of information that even I hadn't been aware of.

Overall, this book does an excellent job. It is factual and a quick read, while still providing historical context for the environment in which this debate is now being had (e.g., the history of sex verification tests, the progression of women's increasing participation in the Olympics, other violation-of-fairness scandals such as doping). It's hard to imagine an author more qualified to explore these issues. Coach Blade not only has a Ph.D. in Kinesiology, giving her detailed insight into male vs. female biology, but she is also a former champion athlete herself, now a prolific coach in a variety of disciplines, and a leader in the sports world. She was there as women's rights on the sports field blossomed, as past scandals unfolded, and she has first-hand insight into the bureaucracies that are now implementing anti-woman policies. She takes her leadership job seriously; in fact, it is because of her sworn duties as elected president of Athletics Alberta that she felt compelled to write this book. She has devoted her life to sports, and her integrity is admirable.

The book also goes into the science of the athletic advantages males have over females. I do wish that a bit of a deeper explanation had been devoted to this, and that more statistics had been included. But I'm just being picky because I know how much is out there. In actual fact, the book contains plenty of such information, including an excellent deep dive into the appallingly shaky study by "Joanna" Harper on which trans inclusion policies worldwide are ultimately propped up.

Overall, this is a well-researched book that is both a great starting point for someone new to this issue and a resource for someone like me who has been neck-deep in it for years. I definitely recommend it. Buy one for yourself and tell your friends. :)

I’m looking for a counterbalancing book for our public school library on the issue of transgenderism in sports. There are lots of books presenting the “facts," even these I found to be pretty heavily leaning toward affirmation and … well, mantra. I wanted a reasoned, clearly argued book presenting the other side of the issue, short and interesting enough to hold the attention of busy American teenagers. No name calling, no denial of anyone’s rights.
I think this one fits the bill. While it does not present only the facts, it has a definite bias; it presents a factual counter argument in an area where there is a void of voices. The comment that really stuck out to me was when a female athlete said she and her fellow female athletes were being made to feel that their place was to sit down and be quiet. Not ok.
I did find the logic a little convoluted at times, a little circular and sometimes the text was repetitive. But overall, a good read.
There has to be a way to work it out without literally breaking female athletes or disallowing transgender ones from playing.
Rating: pg for depth of discussion and content.

This was a really good book, breaking down the scientific reasons that Trans women in sports negatively impacts biological women in sports. A lot of the book is focused on Canada's policy (which makes sense because the author is from Canada). It is not a hateful or mean book, and the authors take care to use the correct pronouns, but they are writing on a very important topic and people should hear them out. As a woman this book was really an eye opener to me.
