The heroine of Lupin's Daughter is a young woman (an librarian) who came from a family of thieves, grifters and co-artists, the young woman distant herself from the family's business and got herself a nice boyfriend, who was a...civil servant.

Everything was working out well, but then the heroine found out her boyfriend the civil servant was actually an elite cop and his whole family was made up with three generations of cops--even their pet was an retired police-dog, only when marriage was brought up to the table. Romeo and Juliet much?

I can't figure out why in many novels the cops from Japan usually introducing themselves as 'civil servant' to new friends and acquaintances in order to not scare people off, is being a cop that shameful even in Japan? (ACAB is pretty much an international thing, I guess?) I don't know enough about the Japanese police system to know what is the deal here. I wish to find out more when I have time.

Back to story itself, the story is delightful and refreshing enough, the characters (especially the heroine's over-the-top-but-still-kind-hearted art thief father and grifter mother) are vividly written, the heroine is an interesting character to follow, plus I also like how her boyfriend struggle with himself when he found out what his girlfriend's family doing for a living, the murder mystery is quite tricky too. Plus the ending of how the main couple deal with their conflict is a nice touch too.

Over all it is a delightful reading experience, I'm looking forward to read more books from this series.

Despite being a thick book for a Japanese mystery book (mine has nearly 500 pages), the content of it was an easy-to-read mystery story that reads like a popcorn flick movie.
The pacing, the "family history", the dead body and the real identity of the dead, the "Romeo and Juliet"-ness of the romance.
It WAS an enjoyable pageturner with many "Ocean's 11" type twists and turns, but just like all the other popcorn movies, it's forgettable.

(I've heard of the title because there was a TV adaptation or something a few years back. I thought I might check it out, but the simple YouTube search for trailers made me not want to watch the show. It looks awful and trashy.)
