A basement flood, a winter storm, and a little holiday magic (okay, maybe a lot) might be just what the doctor prescribed for Natalie and Cade.
Cade hasn't been home for the holidays for three years. Not since the Christmas he planned to propose to Natalie... before she dumped him. This year's Christmas gift? Having to see her again. Surprise!
Natalie is finally settling into a new town. Her bed and breakfast is up and running, she's in charge of the Christmas parade, and she has absolutely zero plans of cozying up to someone special this holiday season. They wouldn't want her anyway. Not with her baggage.
But when Cade shows up at Natalie's B&B, needing a place to stay, the pain of their past begs to be dealt with. Can her secret stay secret? And, more importantly, can her heart stay under lock and key?
Karen Thornell grew up reading when she should have been sleeping, but it wasn't until 2019 that she started writing. Tired of ending books and saying 'goodbye' to beloved characters, she wondered what it would be like to have her own characters that lived in her head always. It was probably a mark of sleep deprivation that she wanted people living in her head, but the idea was planted regardless.
Karen lives in Utah with her husband and kids. When not writing contemporary or regency romance, she spends her free time doing endless loads of laundry, playing board games, and, yes, talking to those characters in her head.

I absolutely loved this book! Such a sweet Christmas romance and if I didn't know better, I would not have guessed this was the author's first published work. It was well-paced for a novella and since the characters knew each other beforehand, the story did not feel rushed at all. I connected with the main characters from the beginning and loved the awkward, funny moments as well as the swoony second chance romance! The epilogue is perfect!
I highly recommend this one and am eagerly looking forward to reading more from this author!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Christmas in Love by Karen Thornell is a sweet, second‑chance holiday romance novella that follows Natalie, who is running her cozy Greenbank, Colorado bed & breakfast and trying to survive her busiest Christmas season yet while managing the town’s parade and filling her Inn, when her ex‑boyfriend Cade unexpectedly shows up needing a place to stay, forcing both of them to face the unresolved feelings and secret reasons that tore them apart years ago. It is a clean, heartfelt small‑town Christmas story with gentle humor, warm family dynamics and that glow of festive hope we crave this time of year.
Right from the moment Cade realizes he must spend Christmas in Greenbank and inadvertently ends up at Natalie’s B&B, I felt pulled into that tender mix of awkwardness and nostalgia that only a true second‑chance story can deliver. Their history isn’t glossed over, and I genuinely felt for both of them as they stumble through holiday activities, shared memories and conversations that let us glimpse not just who they were together, but who they still might become.
The alternating point of view between Natalie and Cade gave real depth to their emotions, especially as hidden fears and regrets come to light between snow‑covered streets, cinnamon rolls and Christmas cheer. The supporting cast; Natalie’s hilarious best friend, April, and Cade’s warm family added delightful texture that made the town feel alive and friendlier than a mug of hot cocoa on a winter evening.
I’m giving Christmas in Love 4 out of 5 stars because it made me feel cozy and hopeful with its honest emotional beats and that classic, Hallmark‑like Christmas charm. Even though it’s short, it carries genuine heart and reminded me how powerful forgiveness and rediscovered love can feel under twinkling lights and brisk December air.
Guys, I LOVED this one! I thought the author did a fabulous job with her characters. It was almost as if I knew them. And the plot is really great too. It’s one of those books you could probably read in an afternoon. And you’d have spent your afternoon in a great way.
Cade is a pediatrician. He’s gone to his parents new home for Christmas. It wasn’t really that new, but he hadn’t been there before. Cade had a relationship that didn’t work out a few years before this book started. And he hadn’t gotten over it. Coming to his family Christmas was a big step for him. Unfortunately, there was a flood and he couldn’t stay in his parent’s house. He ended up having to stay in the local bed and breakfast. Which just happened to be run by Natalie, his ex-girlfriend.
Neither Cade nor Natalie was overly happy to see the other. But it seemed like Cade recovered first. He still loved Natalie. And he went out of his way to try to at least find out what had happened to them.
I loved the way these two were together. It was obvious that they were perfect together. Yet something still kept them apart. When the author revealed that secret, many things in the book made sense.
This book is a super cute Christmas read that you’ll love! Go grab your own copy.
I was sent an e-copy of Christmas in Love as a gift from the author. All opinions are my own.
This short story was adorable in every way ☺️ I always love a second chance romance!
Karen is exceptional when it comes to writing short stories. Truly, I’m not quite sure how she does it. I’ll be sure to reread this again 💛
Update: I just reread this story, but this time with all the added changes. The subtle additions made the story feel more full fledged and rounded, and I adored Nat and Cade. Such a sweet story of unconditional love.
I tend to struggle a little with novellas because there is generally not enough time to flesh everything out. Not enough time for the characters to develop, for the story to move anywhere.
So I was pleasantly surprised with this novella! It helps that the protagonists already knew one another and even cared about each other before this book takes place. So the love story doesn’t feel rushed or awkward. The main characters, Cade and Natalie, are really perfect. Even with the short book, we still get to know them quite well and I couldn’t help but love them both. Natalie is a bit on the dramatic side (particularly knowing her secret) but I still liked her. And the ending lines between Natalie and Cade are so good!
I really liked the supporting characters. April is hilarious. Cade’s family is a riot. I loved their close-knit family community. The circumstances that drove him to Natalie’s Inn in the first place were unfortunate but also kind of funny. The setting is marvelous. I love small town Christmas stories.
Karen really did well with this little novella. It’s a sweet, fun little romance that I look forward to reading every year. Definitely buying the paperback on this one. I am looking forward to how she progresses and grows as an author. I can’t wait to read her full-length novel coming out in 2022!
**I received an ARC of this book with the option to review. All opinions are 100% my own.
This is a delightful novella all about second chances. I loved the well-developed and relatable main character Natalie and the swoon-worthy Cade. I really liked how the chapters alternated between Natalie’s and Cade’s point of view so we get to see what each character is thinking and feeling. I loved Cade’s big, noisy family and Natalie’s protective best friend April. The short length of this story makes it perfect to read in one sitting.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author, with no obligation to review. All opinions are my own.
Karen has always been kind to me on bookstagram, and I’ve loved tagging along on her journey to become an author herself! I was able to read her first published work, Christmas in Love, and let me tell you... she does not disappoint! I loved her characters and thought she crafted a wonderful story. Even though this was a novella and fairly short, she still managed to get me to invest in her characters and their well being. I can’t wait to read what she writes next!
I usually have troubles with novellas because they feel rushed or incomplete and I don't feel that way with Christmas in Love. I love how Cade and Natalie are relatable and genuine. The story is believable and her friend seems like a hoot. Cade and Natalie are college sweathearts until, with no notice, Natalie breaks it off unexpectedly. Cade is left feeling but Natalie is unresponsive. When he nearly runs her over four years later, feelings come rushing back and he's determined to get answers. I'm so excited for Karen's writing journey and that I get the chance to watch her from the beginning. I am looking forward to what she comes up with next and 2022's release can't come fast enough. Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
If you are in the mood for a quick Hallmark like book, this is definitely a sweet novella for you. This debut story by Karen Thornell has me looking forward to what she will write next. Already I can tell she is a strong writer with a good author voice. In this particular novella, Cade gets a second chance at true love with Natalie during the holiday season. The romance and chemistry are definitely there and even though this is a super short story, it felt pretty developed and complete overall. This is a clean romance with a little bit of heartbreak, but a happy ever after. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I recently read and LOVED Pretending At Love, so I wanted to skip backwards and give this novella a try! I'm a sucker for an inn setting at Christmas.
Visiting his parents for the holidays, a plumbing issue forces Cade to book a room at the Greenbank Bed & Breakfast. And he is shocked to discover it's owned by his ex-girlfriend Natalie, the woman who broke his heart four years ago without reason.
I adored Cade! I loved seeing him be completely swept away again by his love for Natalie, determined to win her back. They were precious.
My only issue was the overhanging miscommunication that ended their relationship in the first place. I felt for Natalie and her secret, I really did, but I struggled with accepting her reasoning for keeping it from Cade, totally shutting him out.
Of course, all ends well and I definitely thought this was overall very cute!
It really doesn’t get any cuter and festive than this! Karen’s debut novella, Christmas in Love will knock those cute little Christmas socks right off your feet! Included is a real life issue, a whole lotta love, a ton of understanding, and a dash of festive cheer!
Cade and Natalie haven’t seen each other in 4 years when Natalie broke Cade’s heart. But seeing each other for the first time since then has brought back so many good memories. A personal issue held Natalie back from committing to Cade, but now that he’s in town for the holidays, does this mean a second chance? Natalie doesn’t see it happening, she avoids it at all costs. She doesnt think he’ll understand her issue... or will he?
Thank you so much to the author for this eARC. Christmas in Love is set to release on December 5th, so make sure to get your copy! I highly recommend it!
What are the chances of staying in your ex-girlfriend's B&B in a new, small town? It must be fate that brings Cade and Natalie together again after a series of unfortunate events, but this time, they (or I should say, she) might be ready to seal the deal.
There's something so sweet about a second chance in a small town that warms my heart. Having grown up in a small town myself, I adored the traditions in this place. It felt like coming home to celebrate with these new friends and to watch a romance unfold before my very eyes.
Both Cade and Natalie are very likable characters and I was cheering them on, especially with the hiccups of their pasts. These are the types of characters who feel like friends and it was a treat to read it by the light of my Christmas tree.
What is this, my second novella in a month? Who, me? I never read novellas, but I seem to be branching out this year and I'm loving it!!
My complaint on novellas is that the plot - and usually romance - will almost always be rushed. I say almost, because Christmas in Love is, in my opinion, perfectly paced. A feat to be sure, for a story under a hundred pages!
I second a previous review, this story plays out like a Hallmark movie. I love the B&B aspect of the story, and while second-chance romance isn't my favourite, I enjoyed the history Cade and Nat shared.
Warning: if you read this story, you'll fall in love with the characters, and maybe even change your mind on seasonal reads... no, I'm not referring to me... the Christmas grinch. I promise.
I honestly wish this novella was longer because it was a good read. Good Christmas vibes, cute family vibes, cute friend vibes and of course, adorable romance vibes. Besides who doesn't dream of dating a doctor one point in their lives? ( I did for like two seconds and realized it wouldn't work for me because I am too clingy)
So if you are new to Karen Thornell and are looking for a blissful read, Christmas in Love will be a perfect December read.
(I was given an ARC. All of what I put above is my own opinion.)
Okay, this story definitely needs to be added to your TBR pile— if you haven’t read it already. It had me smiling, laughing, and at one section, close to tears. It’s a sweet story that will definitely pull at your heartstrings. I only wish it were longer.
An adorable and heart-warming Christmas novella, Christmas in Love chronicles the story of Cade and Natalie. Nearly four years after an almost-engagement, Cade and Natalie are thrown back together in the little town of Greenbank. Cade is coming to his parents’ retirement home in Greenbank for Christmas, the same town where Natalie is running a bed-and-breakfast. After unfortunate circumstances finds them spending more and more time together, secrets and hearts are being tugged at.. This was so cute! It is Ms. Thornell’s first book, and begins the series. Both Cade and Natalie have old hurts and feelings still in place. They were both wanting to see each other and at the same time trying to avoid one another. I felt bad for them both! I felt like I could really understand both of their perspectives. Btw it was really cool to see both of their POVs, I liked them both and their voices. I also enjoyed seeing how they helped each other. Honestly, there really isn’t too much I didn’t like! It was cute and fun, kinda Hallmarky! I enjoy novellas, because they are quick stories that offer up the satisfaction of a book and an intro into the world. This is an intro novella and perfect for Christmas, it is a clean romance with an HEA!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
This is a fantastic debut novella, perfect for holiday reading.
Coming home is always hard around the holidays, especially when it has been several years. Cade has not been absent from his family's life but just seems to avoid the massive holiday gatherings. This year he treks to a town known for its Christmas cheer to be at his parent's home for the holidays.
Upon entering town he almost hits a pedestrian that triggers memories that creates an ache he hoped would have healed by now. Circumstances work that he has to stay at a local inn run by the very person he thought was gone forever, his former love Natalie. Natalie broke up with Cade years ago because she had a medical issue that she thought would drive a wedge between them.
Throughout the holiday season Cade and Natalie work together for a common goal and end up coming to terms and closing up loose threads.
I really loved how sweet the characters were. Cade's ache and longing to be part of a family of his own was enduring. Natalie has been working really had for the last few years to create a new life for herself but was finding that a partnership with anyone wasn't going to be part of her life story. You could feel the lack of joy in her life and Cade's reappearance really messed with the routine she had built for herself.
The settings and weather in this book are a perfect holiday read!
Synopsis: Cade is visiting his parents in their new hometown after being away for 4 years. He has finally made it in life with a successful career, but there has always been something missing, the girl that got away.
Natalie is just getting started with her Bed and Breakfast when low and behold the one person she doesn’t want to see shows up to rent a room, Cade. Their history, her secrets, and his inability to understand may begin the relationship again or blow up in their faces.
This book is such an adorable Christmas novella (quick read), which hits so many good points about relationships. Karen Thornell dives into real life situations which makes the book so relatable to so many women. I loved how she developed the characters of Cade and Natalie, and explained perfectly how their pasts have shaped them into who they are today. April, Natalie’s best friend, almost stole the show for me with how much I related to her. Truly I cannot wait to read more books from Karen Thornell, she is such a blessing to this writing/bookish world!
A special thank you to Karen Thornell for the digital ARC of this book. All opinions are my own and in no way biased.
I really enjoyed reading this sweet novella! Christmas in Love is Karen Thornell’s debut novella and it was a privilege to read the ARC copy! This cute Christmas romance is a perfect little story to sit down with your hotcocoa and comfy blanket as the snow falls! Cade and Natalie haven’t see each other in years after they broke up. You can feel the awkwardness of the first meeting and next few weeks. I wanted to sit them both down and discuss what happened because I wanted to know too! Secrets are holding Natalie back from a lifetime with Cade... secrets I know is a struggle for many. Such a cute story!
This is a sweet little Christmas novella! The main characters are both a bit flawed, but very lovable! They had great chemistry in their scenes together. It was a fun second chances story, and I liked some of the side characters enough to want to know more about them. I loved that we had plenty of scenes with Natalie and Cade together, so we could see their relationship grow again. If you are in the mood for a lovely, clean Christmas romance you can devour in a few hours, this is the perfect choice!
Christmas in Love is a delightfully charming romance with fun characters, and a cozy, small-town feel. I loved the chemistry between Natalie and Cade, and enjoyed the small glimpses we got into their shared history. I was impressed with how well the author paced the story, especially for a novella! It never felt rushed or lacking in depth at all. It is a Hallmark-worthy holiday romance, perfect for a cozy December night at home!
The story was cute. It had that hallmark vibe. I enjoyed it. However, I feel there could be more to the story. I didn't connect to some of the characters. Some things could be developed more. Anyway, it was enjoyable enough that I was able to read through it.
"I received an advanced copy of this book from the author, with no obligation to review"
What a cute and adorable second chance romance novella this was. I loved Natalie & Cade and their progress over time. I adored how Cade shared such an amicable bond with his family and all his 7 neices and nephews. And how Natalie's best friend, April was always there for her. This was such a sweet and cozy read that you should definitely get your hands on.
A wonderful little Christmas debut novella by Karen Thornell for this Christmas season, and really any season of the year where you just need a little Christmas. This book had be in the thick of the it, not able to put it down until I had finished the story.
Wonderful and very real characters filled the pages of this story. Natalie has had difficult things happen in her life, one in particular that has mapped a path that she sees as the only way. Even if it pains not only her own heart, but the heart of a man she was once very close to. Cade is a strong, generous and trustworthy heroine who just happens to run into Natalie again after four years apart. All the emotions return upon their accidental run-in and with the help of the Christmas season, and a cute little town, hope, healing and love are able to develop.
What makes the characters so relatable and real is the fact that they have very real and draw emotions that come to the surface, and as the reader you can't do anything but feel these emotions deep in your heart. The pain you watch Natalie go through is something that many women can relate to, or it seems to be more relevant today.
It is a beautiful and fun story, with all the cinnamon rolls, ice cream, snow, Christmas and love one could want in a Christmas novella. I had so much fun reading this one and I know others will as well. And I cannot wait to read more from Karen Thornell in the future!
*I received a complimentary copy from publishers, publicists, and/or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas are my own.
Christmas in Love by Karen Thornell, has the warm fuzzy familiar feel of a Hallmark movie. Let's face it we all love the predictability of the seasonal delight we love so much! This book fits the bill completely, from the backdrop, the backstory and the two main characters who have a history thats screaming for a resolution.
Nicely rounded out with extra characters in the B&B, Cade's family & Nat's best friend April - every element is met. I would have liked to have seen a lengthier resolution, considering the reason they were apart to begin with is significant, and only discovered by the reader close to the end. The way that Cade discovers the problem was done cleverly, nicely done.
A great short story to curl up in front of the fire with. Cute cover!
I received a complimentary copy and this is my honest review.
You are going to want to grab this book and cozy up in blankets. This is such a sweet story and short novella but it puts you in the Christmas mood from a Christmas carnival to family time to the smells of the season like fresh baked cinnamon rolls. Like seriously- I need some cinnamon rolls! 😊 🎄 This is the first debut novella from Karen Thornell and I’m excited for more! Thanks Karen for letting me read it. I received an ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this cute holiday romance! The premise was so cute and the characters were so sweet and fun. It had a sweet, old time Hallmark type of feel with the owner of B&B and an old flame coming back into town and needing a room. I loved the sparks between Cade and Nat. I love a good second chance romance story and this one fit the bill perfectly.
A delightful, fun holiday second-chance romance that is perfect for the holidays! This sweet story has a lovely Hallmark movie feel that will have you rooting for Cade and Natalie right from the start!
After reading just a handful of reviews, I was convinced that this novella would be the epitome of a Hallmark Christmas movie, printed and bound. Christmas Hallmarks are everyone's guilty pleasure (don't deny it) so I wasn't complaining.
But after reading it, I feel like it was more than that. More meaningful somehow.
I'm not saying that losing your tulip farm to a bigger company isn't a heartbreaking situation for some people (#supportsmallbusinesses😘) But the wedge in Cade and Natalie's relationship felt more real and down to earth. Even though it's not something I have ever personally experienced, it felt more relatable.
Cade returns home for Christmas, only to find his bedroom had gotten on the wrong side of a plumbing malfunction and he’d have to spend Christmas at a nearby hotel, (a themed hotel, to be specific) which everyone failed to mention was owned by Natalie. The same Natalie that broke up with him during the same Christmas he’d planned on proposing.
Novellas are inherently difficult to write because you have a limited amount of time to capture the reader's heart, potentially break it, and mend everything back up, in a “happily ever after”.
Karen Thornell did this masterfully. She presented characters that made you care within the first few lines, high tensions, and a story that makes everyone want to spend Christmas in a small town hotel. #hallmarkvibes
I guessed Natalie's secret early on, but this, if anything, made the story more heartfelt and genuine.
I was surprised to learn that this was Karen Thornell's debut novel. I was hooked within the first few lines and the fog of humour that laced each page kept me smiling the entire time.
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 definitely one I'd consider rereading next time around! (This book comes out December 5! Go grab your copy!)
I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
