Andrew Wicks would do anything for his family. When tragedy strikes, he is forced to make a split-second decision, one that is layered with deception, desperation and self-preservation. As a tenacious police officer unravels his web of lies and exposes the truth, worlds collide.
There is no greater pain than losing a child. There is no greater torment than knowing it was avoidable.
Gripping, haunting and totally compelling, this is a novel that will make you question how far you would go to preserve the sanctity of family life.
I was a police officer for ten years, until I was diagnosed with a hereditary and incurable disease of the heart at the age of 29. I had to retire from the police and was fitted with a pretty nifty device that paces my heart and will restart it if it goes bang again (an ICD to those in the know).
I loved policing. Absolutely loved it. Writing my debut novel - A Parent Apart - allowed me to channel that passion into a project that I am so proud of, and one that I am receiving so many positive comments about. Truly, it was and is a life changing thing to write a book. I loved doing it, and it ignited a desire within me to do a whole lot more. Watch this space - there is much more to come.
Let me know how you get on with A Parent Apart, and thanks so much for reading!
Let me pre phase this by saying that I have no kids so I can’t imagine the feelings in this book. This isn’t one of those books filled with paragraphs on paragraphs describing the color of the sky or ocean. It’s dialogue and internal monologue heavy, but that’s where you get the emotion. By the end I was such a mess I couldn’t bring myself to read the last chapter. That ending was not at all what I expected. Definitely worth a read, but please make sure to look up the trigger warnings.
Andrew almost drowns when he is a young boy, and the fear of the ocean has stayed with him ever since. He is married and a father himself now, still petrified every time his young daughter is near the sea. One day, while he and his wife are looking after their friend's little boy, tragedy strikes, and Andrew is faced with a terrible decision. Save his daughter or his best friend's son. Still in shock, when Andrew is questioned about the accident, he lies about the choice he made which child should live and which should die.
Oh my, just a few chapters in and I am torn into a thousand pieces. I still have images created from the sorry of seeing this child release what will happen.
It is a heart-wrenching story of a family fighting to know what happened to their son, and that gut feeling that they aren’t being told the truth, by Andrew. A police force not knowing if the death is by accident or foul play, and Andrew’s torment not only about the choice he made but the lies he is telling now. Andrew’s daughter knows the truth, but she is traumatised by the events that day herself.
The story is told from everyone’s perspective and how it affects them personally. It is like walking in all these characters shoes and being them. I went through every emotion, from guilt and regret to despair and utter insanity. It is very hard to believe that this is the author’s debut novel as he not only captured each of the characters to perfection, he captured me too.
The author takes this story much further than I could have imagined that he would. I still shudder thinking about this story and have waves of emotion roll over me like a violent stormy ocean. An author to keep your eye on. Superb writing.
This book is an incredible debut. SO gripping and packed full of drama from start to finish. I don’t think I’ve read a book before that has been all go the whole way through. When I’d finished reading I just felt speechless and I definitely had one of those book hangovers. One of the best thrillers I’ve ever read. It came with so many twists and unexpected turns.
It was written brilliantly. It definitely was a powerful and haunting story, it is something that will stay with you for a long time. Gary did a brilliant job of telling the story from all sides - Andrew, Chris and Linda, being able to see the heartbreak and stress from all characters. It just felt so real, from the incident, the police investigation and the series of events that followed. So compelling and heartbreaking.
Gary has some great knowledge and knew how to bring the book to life, having worked in the police environment you can clearly see the passion and hard work that has gone into the book. I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. For anyone who enjoys reading a Crime / Thriller then this book is definitely for you. I cannot recommend this enough.
4/5🌟 📖Synopsis📖 A Parent Apart focuses on an almost impossible and heartbreaking decision, save your own child or someone else's. After a lapse of judgement, Andrew has to decide between saving the life of his daughter or his friends son. What follows is the heartbreaking torment of the aftermath of his decision and how it haunts everyone involved. ⚠️TW - The death of a child, suicide, grief, murder⚠️.
This book is the definition of a page turner. The writing style is easy to follow but sets the scene great. Not only is it realistic with the police investigation side of things but it's also really emotive. My eyes did leak a few times during the really sad parts.
4/5🌟 because there is a few things that I think would be better slightly different but over all I'm so impressed that this is a debut book. I can absolutely see this being made into a drama series and I would recommend this book to those who love crime and thrillers!
Huge congratulations to Gary Wright for publishing his debut novel!
Gary certainly knows how to create a real sense of atmosphere, I could feel the tension and the bewilderment building throughout the book.
The characters are well-written and relatable, their dialogue is natural and always believable.
A Parent Apart is a good solid read. It is heartbreaking and certainly makes you think about what you would do in the same devastating situation. I look forward to reading more from the author in the future.
Many thanks to Gary Wright for the eBook in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
I have seen this all over the gram with amazing reviews! Well, this book was INCREDIBLE.
The unnecessary lies which followed the accident, the revenge, the emotional rollercoaster (it's a hell of a ride!), it was non stop throughout the whole book. I felt for a majority of the book, I was on the fence and couldn't pick a side. Hmm, as you get a good way through, I definitely picked a side, all the secrets were coming out. The last section of the book, was just something else, I didn't expect how far it would all go! Speechless.
I don't know if I can truly put into words how brilliant this book is (well, it's being commissioned for TV, so maybe that speaks volumes!) I really need a follow up, as I need answers!
Also, a final note, I am grateful for the topic of riptide/current to be explored and explained. This is such a hidden killer on the beach and really needs to be highlighted more. Thank you, Gary for allowing me to read this incredible book.
There’s nothing more thrilling than coming across a debut author, especially when their book turns out to be such a haunting and compelling read. Labeled a crime thriller, I feel this book has so much more to offer, it’s a heart-rending read, where the reader is torn, who actually is the victim of this tragic tale? The parents who lost a child? Andrew? His family?. Andrew is forced to make a split-second decision save his daughter, or save her best friend. A decision no parent should have to face, but one that sets in motion a tragic sequence of events that result in a tangled web of deception.
It’s a haunting story where two families collide, and grief-fuelled recriminations expose human flaws. The plot plays on every parents worse nightmare, which immediately heightens your own emotions. As we learn more about the tragic events, we learn about the choices Andrew makes out of desperation and self-preservation. From the start you know what Andrew has done, but has a crime been committed? That’s the burning question, and one that urges the reader onwards. I really enjoyed this unique concept in a crime thriller.
I really enjoy a read where the author gives the reader a moral dilemma to ponder, as I found myself thinking “How far would I go to protect my family?”. It’s one of those rare books where the characters get under your skin. The author has done a marvellous job in creating characters who are authentic and relatable. The story is told from both families POV, each is a hot bed filled with raw emotions, guilt, grief, regret, and anger. Some scenes in this book felt so real and intense that I’m not ashamed to admit I actually shed a tear. If you're looking for a crime read that’s engaging, creative and moving then I would urge you to buy a copy of A Parent Apart.
I finished this book last week in 2 sittings after seeing a few Booksta friends sharing their reviews. It's taken me a while to articulate a review for it because I honestly can't stop thinking about it. Also, since finishing it I've not felt like starting a new book because I just don't know what I want to read that won't be spoiled by me comparing them👀
Let's start with Andrews character, I feel he can spark many debates😂 Personally, I didn't like him. As a parent I can appreciate the decision he made, but my goodness, he's irritating and selfish. The way he just wants to forget and move on with his life doesn't seem like it would benefit anyone but himself. Does he forget that Linda and Chris were his best friends, let alone Joe being his 6 year old daughters best friend?!
This book is so emotional and raw. My heart broke for everyone at some point and it didn't get any better. It's such a well executed story and the attention to detail from the settings, to the feelings to the role of the police is brilliant. (Talking to the author afterwards, I found out he was actually a police officer for 10 years himself!)
As for the ending; am I satisfied? Is it sad? Both?... who knows? 😂 Just don't skip the happily ever after!
If you've read this book, let me know! If you haven't, I suggest you do.. But please note the trigger warnings ⚠
TW: CHILD DEATH, SUICIDE, MENTAL HEALTH, DEATH AT SEA & VIOLENCE
Wow, I am speechless. I don’t have words for what I read and the topics included in the book. I don’t normally use TW but here I feel its a must.
This book was absolutely heartbreaking 💔 I sometimes couldn’t stop the tears that fell especially at the start of the book.
Gary, you’ve written an excellent book - its been an honour to have won a copy of your book from @bartowskibookclub for the #bookishmatchup and I am over the moon I got one. This is life changing and shows you how things can change drastically in the blink of an eye.
I don’t want to say too much about the book because I don’t want to give spoilers away but I think if I was in Andrews shoes, I think I’d definitely have made the same choice as he did… as hard as that may be, it was his kid; his pride and joy; his world. Despite the changes to his life from then on, I don’t think he’d ever regret saving his child the way he did.
I cried and cried… and then cried some more. For a first book, this is spot on. I can’t rave enough about it.
Excellent piece of work, Gary. You should be so proud.
First off, congratulations to Gary Wright for self-publishing his debut book, and also for writing such a great one!
A Parent Apart is a thought-provoking and evocative domestic thriller that faces you with the worst decision you hope to never face as a parent. Gripping and fast-paced, I was thinking about this moral dilemma for days after reading it, and could still feel the pressure that Andrew was under as he struggled to remain afloat while being hit by the freezing cold waves.
It's a brilliantly written book, especially for a debut, and there's so much drama to keep you turning the page. The final twist, especially, will leave you gasping with shock.
A Parent Apart is currently available on Kindle Unlimited so go and download it already!
This is a fast paced and gripping read that has you questioning “what would I do in this situation?” I don’t have any children but Gary’s writing manages to show you the heartbreak, anger and vengefulness a parent would feel. The storyline was very realistic and I felt like I was part of the investigation with Gary’s thorough explanations and experience of working within the police force.
The sea absolutely terrifies me so I think this added an element of horror for me too…
This one is a definite page-turner and has twists right up to the very end!
A great duvet novel and can’t wait to see more from @gazwrightwrites in the future!
A trip to the beach leads to a tragic accident resulting in the death of a child. The story follows multiple families and investigating police officers whilst they try and unravel the twisted web of lies to get to the truth!
This story is so much more than a thrilling read, it’s a rollercoaster of emotion and every time I thought I knew where it was going, it threw me off into another direction. I felt gripped throughout the whole book and even a bit emosh at times, the ending was incredible!
I can’t thank Gary enough for sending me an e-copy of his debut book, someone get him a publisher!
My word, i was gripped from the prologue. For the first time in a long long time I wanted to get to the end but actually not finish it. It is so hard to find books like this. I found myself torn, who did I feel sorry for? Everyone!! Would I have done what Andrew did in the circumstances of who to save? Yes I would without a doubt. Did I agree with his lies? Absolutely not. Did I feel heartbroken for Chris? 100%, I actually cried for him. Gary Wright is an author to look out for and I can't wait to see what he does next.
An innocent day at the beach leaves a child lost at sea, which starts an intense wave of events that will have you turning the pages to find out more. This is a haunting story, told from multiple POVs where you can really feel the anger, grief and betrayal from each of the characters. And whatever you do, DON'T skip the Happily Ever After epilogue.
Impressive debut novel - 3.75⭐
Thank you to the author for sending me s digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Whaaaaaat!!!! That is my reaction after finishing this book. It was done and researched so well, fast paced plot, twists and turns everywhere and that ending??? Omg! Insane
Jesus wept. What a book I’ve only just finished crying. I started and finished this within two hours because I could NOT put it down. This was gripping, heartbreaking and more than just a crime novel, this was a raw portrayal of life, love, loyalty and the fierce protection of our children.
As a reader I was torn in both directions. Harrowing but addictive. What an outstanding read, my second by Gary and I can’t wait to see more. He is a fantastic writer
I couldn’t put this book down! From the very beginning with the descriptions of being in the sea under those horrific circumstances, they were so visual it felt scary. And I was hooked. I won’t lie, it’s an emotional read, I think I spent 60% of the book reading with my eyes welled up with tears, and there were certain moments where I was silently bawling my eyes out, in fact for one whole chapter I don’t think I stopped.
It’s a parent’s worst nightmare, I read it mainly at night and at every other page I kept turning and looking at the baby monitor to look at my daughter. It was heart wrenching, at points it was unpredictable, it was such a fast paced read.
I gave it a 4 stars, but tbh it was so close to a 5 stars from me, I just wanted that bit more, but rumour has it a sequel is on its way so I might just be getting that bit more I need in the future!
I really enjoyed this book, I absolutely couldn’t put it down and finished it much quicker than I anticipated. it was gripping and had you feeling so many emotions for the characters. It’s so thought provoking, It really makes you question so many of the characters decisions and all the things they could have done differently. It’s heartbreaking so be prepared for an emotional read
This book may well have reintroduced me to reading - I could not tell you the last time that I read a book, especially a whole actual book from cover to cover – it was years ago, many years ago. Even then I have always tended to stick to books that have lots of big pictures in or perhaps an autobiography of someone famous that I admire – even they are punctuated with a number of pictures. It was therefore always going to be a bit of a struggle to accomplish the reading of this book – there are no pictures, no pictures at all!
What I would have once referred to as story books are something that I have not entertained, probably since secondary school and even then that was not of my choosing, and it was a long, long time ago.
Finding the time was always going to be the first hurdle with this book. Just the other day I found myself waiting for 4 hours outside of a local Hospital – such had been the rush to get there I had omitted to pick up the book – a opportunity missed.
Finding myself in London a few days later waiting an indeterminate amount of time for a friend to complete an appointment seemed like a good place to start. I was wrong. By the time I had found a comfortable corner, a warming coffee and completed a little bit of admin letting people know where I was I had stepped so far as the first page of Chapter 1 and was called away – another opportunity missed.
I am glad that I did not manage to read it – it is NOT a book for a grown man to read in the public domain.
I sat down with the book this morning and started it again. I read it from cover to cover in more or less one sitting breaking only occasionally for a coffee.
I had been very careful not to read any of the reviews that I am aware that some people have left on line for fear it would have tainted my own view and I had purposely not read the back cover for fear of revealing the plot.
I went into this book, therefore, completely blind and as it turns out unprepared.
Wow! What a fantastic and very moving book – its plot twisted and turned taking my emotions on a winding and difficult journey with it.
I don’t mind admitting it made my eyes leak, a number of times and if I am honest I think the last time that my eyes leaked like goes back to the dealings at work that I had with …… well that’s not a tale for here.
I come from a similar background as the author. Chapters 1, 2 and 17 were particularly poignant and difficult but to be fair there was an awful lot that I recognised throughout and which seemed sometimes painfully familiar.
I can see exactly how well this would translate to TV or the big screen and as I was reading, in my mind’s eye, that was exactly where I was seeing it. I sincerely hope that this makes it to mainstream TV or film, I look forward to watching it and I am confident that it will make my eyes leak again.
I feel that the author has set the bar rather high – well done – which is going to make the next book all the more difficult for him.
You’re looking after your friends son and decide to take him and your daughter to the beach. It’s not the best weather and the sea is a little choppy but the kids are right in your eyeline; you’re not taking your eyes of them. But then a dog jumps up unexpectedly at your pregnant wife and your gaze moves for mere seconds and when you turn back to the kids your worst nightmare is coming to life; they’ve disappeared.
You run full pelt at the sea knowing full well how dangerous it is, terrified to your core but determined to find and save the kids. By some miracle you get to them but you realise quite quickly you can’t save them both. The current is too strong and you know if you don’t act fast you’re going to be pulled into the depths of the sea with both of them. What do you do?
There were many things I enjoyed about this book. Firstly the book is written from multiple point of views and whilst some people don’t enjoy this I thought it really captured the storytelling well in the story. The beginning of the books has the most perspectives taken from Andrew and Sophie (Maria‘s mum) as well as Chris and Linda (Joes parents). As the story progresses these reduce and slightly confusingly some chapters were divided by multiple perspectives. Due to the nature of the story and the jobs the characters within it do I think the multiple perspectives were definitely needed to fill in the gaps and drive forward the crime aspect.
The one thing I really disliked about the book was Andrew. I loathe him: Andrew is the lead protagonist of the story and the man who has to make the decision in the sea. My hate for him (yes, I know that’s a strong word) is so intense but not because of the decision he made but because of the lies that followed. For most of the book Andrew appears to benefit whilst another family are torn apart and these really angered me.
Although I liked the book I was worried that my hate for Andrew and the potential outcome of the story was going to affect my rating. Lucky for me; the author clearly knows his readers and the latter part of the book starts to see Andrew’s story unravel. As a reader who hated Andrew, to see his demise was so satisfying. The author and I have spoken about Andrew and he has said many readers sympathise with and feel sorry for the character but unfortunately that’s just not me.
Without spoiling anything, the end of this book was a huge surprise and only further excited me. It turned the book round for me, taking it from a good to great read as it was so unexpected and again gave me some satisfaction in relation to the characters and their stories.
Gary has also added an additional chapter after the end of the story which was a further surprise and again made me feel that the book really deserved a high rating. I know that is a bit cryptic but I really don’t want to spoil anything and I urge you to pick up this book to find out what I’m rambling on about. At under 250 pages it is a quick if not heart wrenching read and you won’t regret it.
When Gary initially reached out to me about reading and reviewing the book I knew at once I would enjoy it due to the moral dilemma raised at the beginning of the story. This book is definitely for you if you are a fan of this type of story or enjoy books by Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain. This book has definitely left me wanting more and the strong feelings I have towards the character shows just how good the writing it. I gave this book a 4 star rating.
Thank you Gary for gifting me a copy of A Parent Apart and congratulations on your first self published book; you should be proud!
Firstly I would like to thank Gary for sending me a copy of his book to read and review!!! It is absolutely breathtaking and is undoubtedly one of the best books I’ve read this year so far!
A Parent Apart has been described as a crime thriller but it is so much more than that. The depth of emotion that runs through this book is incredible and I quite often had to put the book down so I could compose myself. Poor Gary received many a message from me, telling him that I am broken!
The character build up is absolutely exquisite and the story is amazing. A day on the beach turns into a life changing decision for Andrew and in that split second he chooses to protect his family. But that moment alters the lives of him and his family forever, as well as their closest friends too. The series of events that follow can only be described as heartbreaking and quite frankly I felt as though my heart had been ripped from my chest.
As a mother myself I completely resonated with both families, completely feeling Chris and Linda’s devastation, as well as Andrew’s decision to protect his family.
The ending was nothing short of spectacular and I genuinely did not see it coming…..I gasped aloud!!! Gary you are a bloody genius and I am so SO privileged to have read your work!!! What a legend!
Gary’s writing style is so accomplished it’s hard to believe that this is his debut novel.
As far as debut novels go it is absolutely phenomenal and I am incredibly excited to read more by this extremely talented author.
A Parent Apart is a must read for all fans of crime fiction and I cannot recommend it enough!!! It deserves all the stars for this rating
Imagine being in a situation where two people’s lives were at risk, but you can only save one of them! It’s not something you’d ever want to think about, is it? Sadly, this is exactly what happens to Andrew in this story. To make matters worse it is his daughter and her friend who he has to choose between!
In an instance, a split-second decision changes Andrews life irrevocably along with many others around him.
My heart broke when Andrew chose which child to save. Part of me felt sorry for him and the situation he was in but another part of me hated him and felt that he could have done more. I guess in the circumstances he wasn’t thinking straight, but unfortunately, he makes matters worse when he then lies about what happened to the police, his family and his friends.
The series of events that follow are truly heart-breaking, as we witness one family fall apart and the other desperately trying to stay together. There were so many unexpected moments in this story, which I loved, and it held my attention from start to finish. It took me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and is probably one of the most thought-provoking books I’ve read.
My feelings about the characters in this book changed so many times, I’m still not sure how I feel about them now! The story is neatly plotted and perfectly paced. This is a debut novel for Gary and one that he has self-published, I think he has done an incredible job and you can tell his experience in the police force has helped him greatly with writing this story.
Compelling to most, this book may be a trigger for some people so please note that it is a hard-hitting read due to its content and may not be suitable for some. However, it is fiction and thankfully not based on real events so I’m sure most readers will be just fine.
A dark, suspenseful thriller with a sucker punch of an ending! Make sure you read the acknowledgements too!
Thank you so much to the author Gary Wright for asking me to read your awesome debut and providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an open and honest review.
CW: death of family members, suicide, substance abuse, mental health struggles
I read this book after kindly being gifted it by the author (thank you!). Upon reading it, two things became abundantly clear:
1. This book is possibly one of the best books I’ve read all year, and 2. Someone needs to get this man a book deal immediately. (And whilst you’re at it, this would make a cracking 3-part BBC or Netflix drama. Or film.) Honestly, I was shocked to read in the acknowledgements that this was a self-publication. It’s a work of art.
It’s about two couples who are friends and with children of the same age, who are also close friends. One day, a tragic accident puts both children at risk, and one of the parents is forced to make an impossible decision that has devastating consequences.
This book is a rollercoaster. It grabs you right from the prologue and hooks you in the entire way. It’s twisty and tense and heartbreaking (and that isn’t something to take lightly here; I mean it’s completely earth shattering at points). The characters are expertly crafted, complex and relatable. Their relatability really reaches deep into the reader’s heart, soul and psyche. It made me question the lengths I would go to in protecting my loved ones.
It’s a book of terrible decisions and terrible aftershocks. And more aftershocks. And another after that. Seriously, I am reeling.
All in all, this was not at all what I was expecting, and was the best kind of surprise. If you enjoy thrillers, crime, or any kind of suspenseful books, you NEED to read this.
Gary very kindly got in touch to tell me about his book A Parent Apart. I thought the blurb sounded great and was very happy to read and review.
There’s a strong element of tension which runs through the story. Right from the prologue where we meet Andrew as a child getting to difficulties in the water there was a level of anxiety for me as I read. We then move forward to Andrew as an adult. He is married with a six year old and another child on the way. Life is pretty good generally and they have a happy life. But of course happy families in fiction don’t stay happy for long and it isn’t too long before the characters are living a parents worst nightmare and trying to deal with the consequences of a set of events which cannot be reversed.
A Parent Apart is a very emotionally charged book – there are some very upsetting moments and a lot of difficult scenes for several of the characters. This made me feel quite invested in their actions and decisions and although I felt tense as I read, I didn’t want to stop because I needed to see what would happen next.
Life can change unrecognisably in a heartbeat and how you respond to these events and challenges is impossible to predict. This story focuses on how people react to tragedy and how a few words can have devastating consequences. I’m trying to be deliberately vague as I think it’s a story to go into fairly cold – you’ll understand when you read for yourself.
A challenging but absorbing and ultimately enjoyable read which will leave you thinking! Many thanks again to Gary for sending me a copy to read!
WOW there is so much to unpack with this book and my mind is blown.
This morning, i very innocently checked my feed and saw @brizzbrownandbooks had posted that she was going to read this book soon. For me, a book where a child goes missing IS MY WORST NIGHTMARE ever and the comments mentioned a lot of tears from readers. Sooo i wasn't planning on reading it unless there was a guaranteed happy ending.
The author @gaz_wright_ convinced me to give it a go (and its on Kindle Unlimited) so off I went to read it.
Insert MIND BLOWN. 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Not only is this book about a child that gets lost, but they get lost AT SEA. My second worst nightmare 😨
Surprisingly i loved it. Full of terror, suspense, every chapter i thought OH NOOO!!! And if you think it was about to get better, it gets worse for every party involved.
It ended with all loose ends tied up, which i didn't like and then BAMMMMM "The Silent Patient" type twist gets thrown in when you think it is all over.
I am sure everyone wants to know if I cried....... no. I definitely felt sad though, but i feel that if there were more chapters on when the child was missing, i would have cried!
Finally, the writing. I was immersed, needing to finish it so I could find out what happened. The terror, the events were absolutely crazy but they felt real! That is great writing 👏👏👏👏
Definitely recommend but do look up the trigget warnings, because there are quite a few
First off Thank you to you Leanne @amongstchaosreads for bringing this book to my attention. I read your review and immediately added it to my tbr. There is no other reason why I chose to read this book other than your recommendation. And that ladies and gents is the power of this wonderful book community!
☆ My Thoughts ☆ Gary Wright has without doubt written for me the definition of a page turner. I started this book (initially as a buddy read) and couldn't put it down. Every chapter was left with a cliffhanger and I simply had to find out what happened next. The story finished with a climax and brilliant twist at the end that I did not see coming! The entire way through I could strongly visualise the story and it's characters. I think this book was written for TV, I can see it as a drama series for sure.
Gary, you have written an incredible un-put-down-able thrilling read. Thank you! I cannot wait to read more from you and see your writing career flourish as it deserves. ✨
Peeps the story will be a tough read for some trigger warnings may be required but don't let that put you off the author has included them in the book.
Honestly don't delay. Pick this book up. You won't regret it.
Why pick up this book? ✔ It's unique. I've never read anything like it! ✔ Un-put-down-able with short cliffhanger chapters ✔ A superb self published debut ✔ Strong visualisation & evokes emotions
In Beachbrook, on the south coast of England, Andrew had a choice to make. Save his daughter, or save her friend. A decision no parent should have to face, but one that sets in motion a tragic series of events.
With the decision came a dark secret, one that Andrew thought he could keep hidden from his family, his friends and the police.
Two families collide as grief-fuelled recriminations expose the human flaws that haunt us all. The protection of self, the security of family and the fear of losing it all.
This book was so tragically sad and yet intensely gripping at the same time! I am still amazed at how Gary managed to write such a sad story when he has young kids of his own!
The writing is brilliant - it keeps you hooked and always wanting to find out what happens next! I wasn’t expecting the amount of tension that we got, but I’m certainly pleased about that because I love a bit of tension and drama! There were twists I didn’t see coming, and dark truths unveiled!
I don’t have kids myself, but I know that a lot of the people in our readalong chat who have kids did struggle with this read, but still enjoyed it (see trigger warnings below).
I could really envisage every scene in this book, and Gary had some very exciting news recently that A Parent Apart has been optioned by a production company in London, so could be appearing on big screens in future!!🤞🏼🥳
This book was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review
Andrew had a traumatic experience in the sea as a child so he refuses to get near it nowadays. Unfortunately, he lives nearby it and his daughter Maria and her best friend Joe are always clamouring to go in. One day while he and his wife Sophie are looking after the kids his worst nightmare comes true and Andrew is pursued by police officers determined to learn the truth, which they don't believe is the same thing he has told them.
You can tell that the author has been a police officer because we spend a lot of time in their perspectives and see the way they work in a lot more detailed depth than a lot of other crime novels, which made it a lot more captivating to me than most of those. I enjoyed the multitude of perspectives, especially at the beginning when we saw different views on the morning of the tragedy. I would have liked to see more perspectives from the wives later on in the novel as they are both having really difficult times and I think could add another dimension to the story, but I did like how the couples seemed to take turns supporting each other when each of them was in a worse mental position. I would have liked to see a few more remembrances of the couples when they were friends to show the jump from trust to horror and hate, but I did sympathise with each of them. Overall a thrilling pageturner that I would definitely recommend.
Wow, wow, wow. This book is a pure diamond set in a platinum band!
I loved the way the author structured the story. You know when you are watching a movie and something is going to happen, you know it by the way the tune of the music changes and you already start holding your breath. In a book this is not possible of course, but the author builds up the tension in a very clever way by mentioning several times what time it is.
He also describes the drama through the eyes of Andrew who is the one who has to make a very devastating and split second decision on the one hand and the emotions that rage like a storm through Linda and Chris when they hear what has happened.
This is a story about how a few seconds of being distracted can turn the lives of two families who were the best of friends in to a deep dark nightmare.
Are they going to be able to recover from this?
If you are looking for a amazingly good book including every emotion for A to Z, this is the one. This is the author’s debut and I sincerely hope he will keep on writing and I would keep on reading them.
It was very hard to put this book away and I felt every feeling the author added to the mix. I loved it. 5 stars. Any less would be a crime.
A Parent Apart tells the story of a series of events no parent can ever be prepared for. When tragedy strikes, the lives of two families change forever.
Even though I am not yet a parent, this book made me understand the deep love a parent feels for their own and the many facets of that. I felt sooo much for the characters, I thought the author did an amazing job of describing what would going through such a terrible thing would feel like, for all sides involved. I felt the book was somehow impartial, I personally didn't feel there were any right or wrong sides. It all felt very... Human. The writing was gripping, it kept me on my toes at all times. This was definitely a 'can' t go to sleep until I finish this! ' read. I really liked the police investigation element of it. It was very thorough and well done. Gary himself worked in the Police environment and it really showed, it felt very realistic and I appreciated that.
So! Page turner, emotional ride, human characters... Did I mention unexpected twists? I will not say more about the plot as I think it is best to go in knowing few things, but I really enjoyed the twists.
