a queer retelling of the short story by Oscar Wilde. A young student, desperate to earn the affection of the professor’s daughter, seeks the one ingredient necessary to make the potion that will win her heart: a red rose. Jem is a non-binary comic artist, illustrator, and graphic recorder based in Glasgow whose previous work includes The Little Girl Who Gave Zero Fucks by Amy Kean, Feminism: A Graphic Guide (Icon Books), Polly Who?, and the webcomic The Flying Ship.
I love the art style, and that’s what drew me to read the comic in the first place. If you’re sensitive to the death of animals though, I’d read with caution, but it’s a happily ever after story so no worries.
It’s a short read, but full of heart. A non-binary MC (I assume, since they used they/them pronouns) was really nice, and I loved their hairstyle.
I love Jem's comics immensely and anyone who isn't reading their webcomic is missing out big time! This is no exception.
A touching and beautiful story by Oscar Wilde whose flowery language is perfectly matched by Jem's detailed and magical linework and colours. I love the strong design for the magical subject matter and how well thought out it all feels.
A retelling of Oscar Wilde's tale of the same name. As much as I enjoy the original, I prefer this. It's a much more satisfying read and it's illustrated so beautifully. The expression on the nightingale's face as she learns the cost of the rose....
This book was just absolutely beautiful!! Not only was the artwork stunning but the message about love was beautiful. I can't wait to read more by this author. If only I could rate this higher than 5 star.
Jem is such a beautiful storyteller and artist, so their depiction of Wilde was just fantastic. The colors are vibrant, the emotions can be read in facial expressions and body language, and the art really helps to bring the story to life.
A very beautiful retelling of Oscar Wilde's story. The palette, drawings and words are a joy to see. Lovely to have a non-binary protagonist and be reminded of the power of nature and love.
