Finding Me

Rate this book
The poetry in this book is about self-love, self-development, healing and womanhood and is accompanied by illustrations the author made of her photography work. It was written during a time-frame of three years and put together during the first quarantine time in 2020. It descibes the journey of the author back to herself after a heavy break-up and other traumatizing events.

I don't usually read poetry that often, however, I enjoy the feeling that I get when I do read poetry. It gives me a sense of calm and it is very thought provoking. Finding Me was written in a simple manner, the structure and way it was written reminded me of a journal, where we follow the author's journey of heartbreak and discovery. It wasn't an elaborate or complex book, the focus was more on the feelings and emotions.

The illustrations throughout the book are lovely, and give the reader a deeper insight into the words of the author. The book is divided into three main sections: Confused, Healing and Growing. One of my favorite parts was:

"I gave you all the love I had,
I gave you more than I could give
and yet it wasn't enough.
It wasn't what you needed
and so I took it back, back for myself."

Overall a very quick and easy read that stays with you afterwards.

Thank you for the author for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Gianna's poems are an absolute triumph. Her poems come to the reader filled with hope. Even in heartbreak, there is a whisper of hope that kept me feeling light and light-filled while I read. She does not shy away from darkness in her life and how long it took her to let things go. But! She still turns her energy to the goodness, and the joy we all can seek just by noticing that we are alive. She breaks the poems up into three parts: Confused, Healing, and Growing.

The first part is Gianna grappling with heartbreak. My favorite poem from this part is "...and then she just decided to be strong again." Gianna's poems are so simple and so, so meaningful. I hold little, powerful poems like this so close to my heart and repeat them to myself like a Bible verse when I am feeling too small. I will never forget this one.

The next part, Healing, is all about Gianna making promises to herself. It's like each poem is a mantra to herself to persist and grow from the darkness. if you have ever experienced depression, this is what it feels like to beat it. To take baby steps and spoon-feed yourself little nibbles of hope and a reason to live for the next day,

LIke a majestic tree, I can feel my roots.

Strong, solid and anchored

in the essence of my true being.

Gianna's words are anthems to keep going, to persist, to never quit and to never give up on yourself. I love that she is intimate with the reader, and uses her own photography as inspiration for the drawings that accompany many poems. When she takes us to the third part, Growing, she is acutely aware of her journey to a higher level. When you've made it through hard times, the good times feel that much better. I feel the same way - my euphoric moments are always twinged with a bit of melancholy because I think that about how I almost didn't make it to experience this beautiful moment. The growing doesn't replace the hurt and confusion, it's birthed from it.

I don't read poetry often, but I am so glad I read this book. This book is a short collection of poems and though they are not your typical poems with rhymes and rhythms, they are very touching. Even while reading I could feel that these pieces are coming from a very vulnerable place of the author. She has described her journey of dealing with heartbreak, confusing emotions, dealing with insecurities, pain and grief but also healing, growing, accepting oneself.
And she has presented them in the most beautiful way. She talks about how these poems are a vocalisation of her feelings, and reading this I could totally feel that. What makes this even more special is that this book is so relatable especially being a woman. The accompanying illustrations, which are work of author herself, are cherry on the top. I would definitely be going back to this book when I'd need consoling, understanding companion and inspiration. This book is truly a gem for me.

These short poems are following the healing journey of the author as she finds herself. It follows her journey beautifully and some poems pulled on my heart strings and hit very close to home. I don’t feel right even making a note on this book because it’s a personal journey but I guess I was just rather disappointed that she seemed to have found herself through a relationship as if the relationship gave her purpose. Aside from that this collection of poems was beautiful and so vulnerable of her to allow us to follow her journey.

A Perfect Read (and Gift) This Christmas.
From Confused to Healing to Growing, Gianna articulates her pain and confusion going through a heartbreak and traumatising events into these beautiful words and poems. From the pain and difficulties to the love and light. This book is an easy read but goes deep. A great gift for Christmas and the end of the year.

I always find it hard to write reviews for poetry, especially collections like this that are so deeply personal to the author. I feel like their stories are meant to be shared rather than critiqued.

But, while I don’t read much poetry, I found myself so intrigued by this gorgeous collection of poems that navigate the journey of heartbreak and healing.

Finding Me is a quick and easy read, but the emotion is deep and prevalent. It reminds us that through our pain and anxiety, there is strength and triumph. That we are capable of getting through anything.

The structure of the poems are very short, sweet, and written out almost as journal entries. There is a lot of heart and soul put into these pages and I am so proud of Gianna for sharing these emotions with the world.
