From the world of Rylee Adamson and the Elemental Series comes a heroine with nothing to lose and everything to prove….
“My name is Pamela, and I am a witch who has no equal.”
Or so I thought.
It has been three years since the Destroyer sundered our world. The land is no longer whole, but broken into pieces, most technology gone, and the continents shattered into an unrecognizable place.
New monsters have risen from the depths, adding danger on top of danger. Through it all the humans fight to survive as they compete not only with the supernaturals for food and resources, but their own kind as well.
And me? The caravans of humans I pass, they look to me to save them.
Only I am not the witch I once was. Bound by those who fear my power and my bloodline, I’m lucky if I can light a match with my magic, never mind protect anyone but myself.
Now, the darkness in me rises, offering me all that I want. Freedom from the chains I wear, and the power to make everything right. But if I embrace the darkness I will face a cost I could never have imagined…
The Questing Witch series can be enjoyed alone, but for the best experience, binge the rest of the Rylee Adamson World novels!
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
There was nothing really that screamed that there was anything wrong with Aimless Witch. It had an interesting premise - but that was really all. It never delivered anything.
Never at any point in reading the novel did I ever feel engrossed. The book felt (without nessarily doing so) that it seemed to drag on aimlessley without any real intention. The other problem was the world building. I never felt that it was developed or described. It felt confusing and vague - never did you feel like you had an understanding of the world and how it looks, feels, tastes and operates waiting to discover more.
I wanted to enjoy Aimless Witch, but couldn't get invested in the world, characters or plot - it felt aimless.
It really shouldn't be so hard to write a review for such an awesome book but you know what, it's not that easy when I don't want to give spoilers away, you really need to read this one yourself, but first if your new to Shannon Mayer start with the Rylee Adamson books, then pick up the Elemental series follow those up with the Rylee Chronicles and don't forget all the novella shorts as your going through they are magical gap fillers and just make the whole world come to life... Just before it all falls apart..lol
That then brings us to Aimless Witch and a personal favourite character of mine from the Rylee books Pamela the super witch, even Pamela didn't know exactly how powerful she was before she helped Larkspur the Destroyer re-start the world but now after all that, just what kind of world are they really left with??
Pamela and Oka are on there own and trying to figure out what is going on with the new world and how she fits into it and you know what it is an absolutely fantastic story that will make you feel lots of feels for Pamela and her new pack and the ending, the ending is worth waiting for ....
The Rylee and the Elemental series are some of my all time favs .... so for that alone I love this book, more of that world is just wonderful. This however has a fresh feeling to it Pamela is such a strong diverse character that I can’t wait to see what is in store for her.
This book started a little slow but my love for the other books in this world made it easy to push through the beginning, and as the story progressed and developed and became clear that it was going to be the same world but remade anew 😉.
Absolutely worth the read! But if you haven’t read the Rylee Adamson novels or the Elemental series I wouldn’t start here you will have no context of the world or the characters and their histories that make this book great. Read the whole series it’s phenomenal!!! They’re books that I keep going back to because the character and world building and the story itself is one of the best I have ever read, it really has a lot of everything you could hope for in a series. They suck you in to the point you forget to eat and find yourself holding your book with one hand while trying to do literally everything with one hand so you don’t have to put the books down and stop reading!!
I haven't read any of the other books in this world, I started with this one because the cover was so pretty. But this was so good, I need to go back and read all the other ones now. I wasn't confused or anything by not reading the other books first. Obviously some stuff happened that I had no clue about, but it was explained well enough. This world was really cool, and I liked the magic. Pamela was a really great character too, I'm kind of excited that I have other books to read with her in it from the other series. I loved the familiars in this!
I listened to the audio of this and the narration was great.
2.5 stars its been a while since I read the Tracker series, and Although I enjoyed the first half I never finished it because I simply lost interest in the world. I didn't realise that Aimless witch was set in the same universe as Rylee's and there were points where I felt like I had started in the middle of a story with the world building not exactly clear, but not to the point where it completely throws you off, so this could be read without reading Miss Mayer's other series. The first half of the book was excrutiatingly slow, I was terribly bored. The plot picks up around the 20th chapter, I have nothing against slow moving plots, sometimes it adds to the character or develops relationships, but here all the developed relationships seem to die and thus felt slightly 'aimless' Pamela is cool, but her 'maturity' wavered, sometimes she came across as someone who had no clue what was going on, or a whiny teenager, or an old magical soul who totally had her shit together. I could have done without the romance, nothing wrong with Mac, i just felt it was added for the sake of being added and it was almost an instalove which is my second least favourite thing. Romance based on 'magic' bonds always feel like a cop out. This book is very dark, I liked that about it, and it doesn't pull punches. Don't know if i'll continue the series
Hmmmm. Where do I start? I did not read the Rylee or Elementals series before starting this. The synopsis assured me that I wouldn’t need that kind of prior knowledge to enjoy this series, for the most part it is very true, I didn’t have the urge to wonder what the back story was with her mentor or her dad, because it wasn’t really paramount to the current story being told. That being said, this had a slow build to it and I kept waiting to get carried away with this story and I simply wasn’t. I only recently discovered This author and i noticed that this book didn’t seem too different from her Desert Cursed series. A powerful girl, cursed/chained to keep her from reaching her true potential, joined on her journey by a small sized quick witted friend (who *gasp* can take on a much larger form, and a “helper” is introduced on the journey that she becomes a potential love interest. This story, so far, is not really unique. But I will read book 2 just to see if things pick up:
This one took some time for me to get into it. Pamela was, of course, in The Rylee books but I was very aggravated by some of her choices near the end. I was not able to connect to the elemental series so I’m sure I missed a part of the story as a whole. Pamela is still very young and she really does not understand her gifts. She is waiting for everyone else to teach her and help her and hold her hand. She wants to be grown but she doesn’t think things through. Oka is a fantastic familiar and I love the relationship they have. Mac is an interesting addition especially with my favorite appearing at the end. And I’m very curious to know if Richard is indeed connected to Liam. I really hope this story is bringing us back to the family because I really need more rylee and crew in my life.
Set in a broken world, plague devastating humanity and technology lost, “Aimless Witch” begins three years after the layers separating mankind and the supernatural were ripped apart. Fighting to survive in a hostile environment, caravans hire witches to keep them safe from the unnatural forces roaming the earth. Left with only the dark magic of her bloodline after her elemental powers were stolen eighteen-year-old Pamela with her familiar Oka have joined a caravan looking for the safety of Shamballa, joining a weak human witch in the protection of three toddlers who are immune to supernatural powers.
Well-written and absorbing the plot heats up, a storm brewing as the caravan faces earthquakes and attacks from zombies, trolls, gargoyles and werewolves. Tension continually builds as the action escalates when Pamela is faced with using her dark powers to save the Immunes, seeking help in dreams to find the answers she needs to unlock the elemental magic stripped from her by the bracelets she’s been forced to wear.
The language gritty as the conflict grows deadly and the violence increases, Pamela aimless since the breaking of the world begins to find purpose in her determination to save the children and in her friendship with adults in the caravan. In a roller-coaster ride you can’t put down until finished, the young witch not only discovers the pain of loss in a self-sacrifice she never expected, but as her heart develops an attachment to Mac a shapeshifting bear. The writing style fluid, the plot progresses quickly and smoothly to a surprising ending that promises an exciting sequel.
Among a wealth of compelling, and multifaceted characters is Pamela, a catalyst for change that brings hope in a dark world. She’s strong-minded, smart but often impulsive and dependent on Oka, her cat who’s shrewd, protective and loyal. Richard is the stoic, fair and rational leader of the caravan; Macy a troubled and bitter fighter; and Macmahon (Mac) her second familiar who’s understanding, encouraging and supportive. All infuse the plot with depth, high-energy and emotional tension.
I liked “Aimless Witch” and look forward to the next story in the “Questing Witch” saga.
I don't know how Shannon does it, but she's got another winning series starting here! I love that most of her series are intertwined while being separate story lines. And, I can't wait for the final mind-blowing book that ties them all together either! (At least I hope there will be one. ;) )
This series has us following Pamela after she and Lark have "broken" the world in order to save it. Like any post-apocalyptic story, society - and life in general - have fallen apart. Groups of people called caravans are what society is now made of instead of cities. Most caravans are small as supplies are hard to come by, and while some are truly trying to live in the new world, others are all too happy making life a living hell.
Fans of Rylee and Lark will not want to miss this spin off!
It got better once Mac came into it, which was introduced way too late immediately considering he was her love interest, but it was way too dystopian for me especially in the beginning. I wanted more fantasy/fantasy romance than dystopian. Even though there were magical creatures and had magic it just didn’t give me those magical vibes that I wanted. I did like Oka and thought she had a great rapport with Pamela. They did have sweet moments. I think that was one of my favorite parts of the entire book. The ending was good with all its action packed scenes and Mac, but the rest of was just blah. It just wasn’t what I was expecting or wanting.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Well bugger me that was awesome! What an unexpected journey Pamela has been on in the first book. Absolutely loved the references to previous series by this author, adding to the poignancy of Pam’s journey with each triumph mastered. What a fearless and bad ass character to follow! I love Oka and Mac and can’t wait to see how this all pans out. But by god Shannon - that ending?!?!
Wish I knew this was a spin-off before I started reading it as my first book in the series. I would definitely rate it more. As this is a side story, you're thrown in to the what feels like the middle of story and you should already know the background and characters. Which I didn't and I was a bit confused at the beginning with the missing plot. My fault. The book was still an enjoyable read, but I recommend reading the main series first.
A fantastic spinoff series! Pamela, from the Rylee Adamson series, takes center stage in this book as she fights to stay alive in the aftermath of the reset of the world. The world is broken. Humanity has been all but completely decimated. Shifters roam looking for those whom they can take down, or bring into their groups, and some of the humans who have survived are just as evil as they were before the breaking. Pamela, with Oka, is fighting to protect those whom she is helped by. But it will not be an easy task, especially when there are those who come and hamper her severely. Aimless Witch by Shannon Mayer literally had me squealing in 10 seconds flat when the author described Oka. Let's just say I ADORE cats. LOL! So, yeah. I went a little nuts. Now, this book is fast-paced, insanely good and trust me when I say, will have you in your feels. So, get ready. Pamela seriously has a major uphill battle to fight as things just keep hitting her one after the other. I never stop rooting for her though! I keep hoping that she'll find someone to help her out, but everywhere that she turns, she's told that there is no help. That she, Pamela, must become the helper! She must become the teacher. I'm just like...mind...blown! This novel is INTENSE! I couldn't put it down. It was a bit of a slow start for me at first, yeah, I have some catching up to do, but once I got deeper into this book nothing could tear me away. So my recommendation is this...you plan on reading this book? Clear your schedule. Get someplace you can be alone. Because you will not be wanting to put this book down or be disturbed while reading. Yes. It's that good. Also, make sure you have some kleenex nearby. I literally cried. More than once, too. I love stories of where things don't go perfectly and this book fits that description. You hope for the characters, but then when things begin to fall apart you get to see them rise even higher and become so much more. I have to admit, Shannon Mayer is absolutely one of my favorite authors and she continues to amaze me with each story that she writes. I can't get enough of it. This author keeps me coming back for more. When I finished the book I howled...Give me more!! LOL! I am an avid fan and reader of end of the world books, and this book is perfect. If you're not familiar with the Rylee Adamson story, read that first before you dive into this book. That series set the stage for this series. I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book is fantastic. I need more. I want more! Pamela is such a fun character and I love Oka. Grab this book! Read it to the end! It's purely fantastic. I honestly cannot say that enough. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
I've been struggling to find the right words to describe this book because no accolades I could give seem like enough. When a favorite author starts a new series, it can be a scary experience for readers. What if it's not as good as her past books? What if I don't like it? You can put those fears aside with Shannon Mayer.
If you've read the Rylee Adamson series, you've already met Pamela and I promise that you will not want to miss this book! It's truly amazing and will leave you ready for the next book in the series. Buckle up and get ready to fall in love with Shannon Mayer's books all over again!
This was really good. It had a slow but necessary progression. The ending was breathtaking. I love seeing Pamela come of age and strength. I love seeing Rylee’s influence all over her yet she is completely her own. I love Oka and Mac and other new faces. And most certainly an old familiar face;) Promising series. Can’t wait for more.
If you are a reader of the Rylee and or Lark series you have been anxiously awaiting for the answer to, What happened after Destroyer? Wait no more and in true Shannon Mayer style it was worth the wait! Pams story is one of hardships and perseverance. With a host of new characters you will just keep turning the pages. The very last word will just make you want more. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
What an awesome book. I adore Shannon's creativity. I love seeing the world through Pamela's eyes, she may be one of my favorite characters. Shannon Mayer does such a wonderful job making her world a vivid place to visit, it's darn near agonizing when I come to the end of the book. I cannot wait to read the next chapter of Pamela story.
I've already tried this author a few times and didn't find any of her works very enjoyable. This was my last attempt but sadly I have to just accept that this author just isn't for me.
The storytelling is as subtle as a lorry through the kitchen and comes across as incredibly melodramatic and clicheéd in crucial moments. It does a lot of telling instead of showing which is excusable to a degree because this is a sequel series and you have to info-dump some things but the author perhaps got so used to doing so that she also did it with a lot of current development that should've been shown instead of told.
I was irritated by word choice quite a bit which I am usually very resilient against. The author regularly uses these small words that naturally flow into a sentence but don't actually make sense in the context if you think about it. I can't even recall a real example. A fictional example would be: The MC flips a coin each day to see who has to do a chore and there is nothing special about today's outcome of the flip. No skewed chance or anything but the MC reacts with "why do I of all people have to wash the dishes" like it was a 1/10000000 chance or something. It sounds very natural in the moment but if you think about it there really is no reason to call attention to it. In this fictional example, you could maybe interpret the reaction as whining or self-pity but that is just a shortcoming of my example. For the occurrences of this flaw in the book, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they were there. This was a lot of explanation for a minor nitpick but that is my fault for not being particularly articulate. This minor detail wasn't pivotal in my decision to give up at all. I just thought it was worth mentioning because it was weird and I haven't noticed something like that in a book before.
I can honestly say I was not prepared for this book! I love Shannon Mayer’s stories, she has an exceptional way of hooking you and not letting go the entire book or series and Aimless Witch is no exception. The Questing Witch series is a continuation of the character Pamela from Mayer’s Rylee Adamson series and for those of us who have read and waited for this we certainly are not disappointed with her debut book on Pamela’s individual series. We find Pamela on her own with only her familiar Oka, an orange tabby cat, trying to find her way in a world amidst its destruction. Everything that was known and familiar before the Rending has now been turned upside down and every which way but straight. Now Pamela and Oka are trying to figure out what this new life means for the young powerful witch, but it won’t be that easy. With no rules and no laws and no one to protect her but herself and her cat, Pamela faces cruel humans and powerful supernaturals that only wish to see her dead, when she joins a Caravan transporting young children, women and men trying to get to a safe haven she will be faced with a choice, does she show them who she truly is or does she leave to protect herself from possible heartbreak or even death? This new adventure is full of surprises, some that will hit you right in the feelings, and all that will leave you wanting more! Can’t wait to see what’s coming next in Pamela’s new world.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
Second time I've tried to read this book but I just could not get into it. I did not click with any of the characters.
I like to really like other series by the author.
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: No for this series -- Yes for author's other work
Would you recommend?: No for this series -- Yes for author's other work.
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
I dont know if it was by design but the story really follows the title. It's not a bad story but I'm not really sure what it was about... This reminds me of when Jerry Seinfeld was trying to promote his series about NOTHING... or that Game of Thrones line, "You know Nothing, Jon Snow"... the story was really about nothing in particular.
I realized from the main characters conversations that this may be a spinoff, so it could be that the other series has all the details. Again, not bad but just a blah regular story with an awesome narrator. Shout out to narrator Kristine Hvam!
I dont know what it is but I'm just getting so attached to Familiars... more than the main character sometimes. This witch has a cat named Oka who is sassy and motherly. They have been wandering around together trying to think of a purpose. The cat is definitely the best character of this book. I'm starting to tire of female characters who complain and cry more than getting the job done. Maybe it's time to take another break from YA.
For you fans of the "Slow Burn" type story, this will be right up your alley. I will be reading the next book, but just not immediately. It's intriguing enough to give Book 2 a chance.
