The important science topic of plant growth is featured in this beautiful, easily accessible book on leaves. Clear photographs and simple, engaging text describe leaves and how they help plants live and grow..
The reassuring message of this sweet picture book, so entranced my group that we loved the older tree making sure that his earnest charge was convinced of and understood his promise of love and steadfast attention until she was able to survive on her own. We were surely convinced, and could all call up a memory in our own hearts and minds of similar bonds.
And as the elderly tree who was reading to my very own grand-saplings, it was rather difficult not to become misty and so full of feels that reading could outlast the pages left to read. Luckily, I made it through. It's truly a love note to whoever you are reading to. . .what an absolute treat for the reader. . .
Stephen Hogtun’s debut picture book is something rather special and the like the memories that the young sapling will always remember, ‘Leaves’ will remain with the reader long after the last page has been turned.
For years, a wise old tree has nurtured a sapling. Protecting her from the elements and filling her with love, he has helped her grow true and strong. Listening to his wisdom, the sapling has learnt how to care for and appreciate things, how to be strong and adaptable, the importance of keeping good memories and letting go of the bad. Together they make memories to last a lifetime. But eventually it is time for the old tree to go and for the sapling to take her own place in the world and to hold onto the memories that mean so much…
Extremely poignant and full of emotion and meaning, Leaves is a beautiful story of love, loss and those memories that we share and hold dear. Everything and everyone has to come to an end and the cycle of life and death are gently explored through a wonderfully touching relationship between two unusual characters, an old tree and a sapling.
With thoughtful and moving words and sumptuous artwork, the ups of life burst off the pages as the pair skip through meadows, embrace nature, relax by streams, watch birds flutter in the sky and enjoy feeling the breeze in their leaves. Wonderful memories made and wise words are shared before the old tree slowly begins to fade, and when he does, make sure a tissue is close at hand.
As the old tree ages, indicated by the passing of the seasons, and its leaves, the precious memories that it cherishes, begin to fall, you know the inevitable is going to happen but it still brings a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye when it does. Just as it is in life, the sapling must go on, we all must go on. Losing a loved one is hard so make memories together whilst you can, for they will be there to hold onto forever and always.
Sometimes a book hits you right in the heart and this is exactly what Leaves does. It is thoughtful, it is comforting, it is heartwarming, it is heartbreaking, it is so many things. Such is its cleverness, with plenty of opportunities for conversations and exploring the deeper morals of the story, it could be enjoyed by a wide-aged audience who will all take away something different.
A moving, heartfelt and utterly beautiful picture book from an incredible new talent.
This is a truly gorgeous picture book with beautiful illustrations. In the story the older tree teaches the younger tree all about how to live life and form precious memories to hold on to. There are so many lovely quotes: 'Some moments you must let go But remember to keep the dear ones near For good memories will shelter you from the storm And the great ones will keep you warm ' The memories are represented by leaves in the story. It shows the passing of the older tree (cleverly represented through the change of the seasons into winter) and the younger tree continuing to carry on with life and form new memories. At the same time the older memories live on with the younger tree. I loved this story and found it quite an emotional but beautiful book to read. A perfect book to share with children. Many interesting discussions could be prompted by reading this together. This book will be published on 2nd September . Thank you to NetGalley and Bloomsbury Children's Books for this eARC.
Ridiculously poignant look at the cycle of life, and a lesson in how people have to pass away, in the guise of a picture book about two walking, talking trees. Shuck off the way they kind of ruined that there Tolkien film, and marvel at the peaceful bond of love the father has for his child, and how he takes her through the year they have together – a year that ends with his leaves getting thinner and thinner, but all the more precious. Beyond the two having absurdly cartoonish faces, this looks a treat too, with wonderful atmospheric landscapes for the trees, and a real dynamism with showing bird flight and rushing winds. Beyond its beauty it is of course a book with a purpose, of showing how life carries on, and how, even when a youngster stops looking up to a parent with love and starts looking up to them with concern, they are still loved. As will this be.
This is a beautiful picture book about the seasons of life. An older tree talks to a younger tree about navigating life’s ups and downs, imparting wisdom along the way. The illustrations are beautiful and the sentiment is commendable.
I think this would be best used with older children or teens as they will appreciate the symbolism of the “seasons of life” whereas I think younger children might be confused by the story, thinking that winter leads to death.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I mean, beautiful pictures and sweet message, but it was pretty intensely abstract and metaphorical, but the METAPHOR DID NOT WORK! Only 3.5 stars, because if you want to use a metaphor of leaves to teach about love and life and passing on memories, don't also make it about death! Because when a tree looses it's leaves in the winter, it grows them back again next spring - it doesn't die! Ergh. Anyway, so the metaphor at the heart did not work, but the illustrations were nice?
I had to struggle hard not to cry when I read this beautiful book. The story captures the unique hope and heartache of life's cycle and parental love with such gentle, wise words and spectacular seasonal scenes. It has the same classic feel as The Giving Tree. I loved it.
“Don’t worry,” he told her. “Some moments you must let go. But remember to keep the deer ones near – for good memories will shelter you from the storm. And the great ones will keep you warm.”
pictures and story are excellent! I will reread this with my kid when she is older. The story can help to explain life circle of nature. my husband said it make him a bit sad after reading it.
The description blurb for this book is horribly mistaken. It is so much more than a book about plants!! Its about love, grief, death, perseverance and strength. 5/5!
This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful children's books I've ever come across. The art is perfect to me, perfeeeeect!!! I could look at it for hours. It's all watercoloury and wistful and sad and yet so, so cute, the use of colours soo skilful and all smudgy – which is to say impeccable. If I'm ever decorating my walls with any wallpaper out there, this will be it. Please make these pages into wallpaper.
The story itself is quite simple and nothing new per se, but at the same time it carries a huge emotional impact in just a few lines per page. It's about love and loss; the changing of seasons, the cycle of life, death and ends and new beginnings, and the journeys in between; the most bittersweet kind of hope. I love how nature and the four seasons were drawn and written into this as much as I love the seasons themselves. The book began a bit abruptly, though, and I felt almost as if I'd missed the first couple of pages the way the story just jumped right into it. And as said, the themes and metaphors really weren't all that groundbreaking, but then again, they didn't have to be. Leaves is about some of life's most basic, yet most profound messages, put into ~30 pages in a way that I think will impress both children and adults alike anywhere and anytime.
I kept thinking about The Station Cat the whole time while reading this and only afterwards realised this is from the same author. That, too, was HEAVENLY art-wise.
Read this while having my morning coffee, which in retrospect probably wasn't the wisest decision. Way to start my day crying (and staring) my eyes out.
