Samantha M Clark is the author of the middle-grade novel THE BOY, THE BOAT, AND THE BEAST, published by Paula Wiseman Books/Simon & Schuster.
She loves stories about ordinary children doing extraordinary things. After all, if four ordinary brothers and sisters can find a magical world at the back of a wardrobe, why can’t she?
When she's not exploring wardrobes, she's writing about magical worlds, some more real than others. And when she's not spinning words, you'll probably find her reading, cooking or out in the garden. She lives in the land of the weird with her husband and two kooky dogs.
Just read this one with my daughter. Not my favorite! I thought it was needlessly wordy and took way too long to get to the point. It felt like several chapters were used as fillers. It ended up having a really sweet message, but I dont think I’ll be buying the second one.
I was surprised to discover that this is the first book! I had accidentally read them out of order, and the book I'd read first seemed like a more appropriate starting point.
It's fine, though! There really doesn't NEED to be an order, since it's easy enough to pick up what's happening regardless of which book you read first! This one in particular is so wholesome, it made me tear up a little... :..)
The only thing that I find a little bit odd is how strongly the others insist on Opal giving the speech, only because they haven't heard her yet. That feels like novelty more than Opal being the "best" choice. Still, it's true that cheerleaders make good leaders, too!
I struggled to find a chapter book series for a girl dragon lover on my gift list, so I was very happy to find this book. The world inside the book is as sparkly as the cover.
I loved the underlying message that we're all special in our own way. I bought books 1 & 2; hoping this series will get many more books.
My daughter loved this book and can't wait for the next one. I also thought it was cute. It was well-written and had positive messages for kids. We're looking forward to reading the second book in this series and getting to know more of the gemstone dragons.
Started this series with my daughter. She loves it! Especially with the idea of each dragon having a gemstone power and how they help other creatures. Definitely a great series to help start reading chapter books!
I did this as a read aloud with my 7 year old daughter. I loved how the book focused on seeing others good qualities, but also how in the end it touched on recognizing your own good qualities and that it’s ok to be in the background, but that everyone’s talents are needed to help each other.
Read this with my 5 year old daughter and she loved them. We love that there's learning moments for her and how cute the fantasy story is. My daughter adores the books because her school mascot is a dragon so hopefully we can read them all
