A prominent member of the D.C. community has been murdered, pulling Lieutenant Sam Holland into yet another high-stakes homicide investigation that has her trying to connect the dots between a dead woman and the friends and family who’d turned against her right before her untimely death.
With numerous scandals still fresh within the department’s ranks, Sam is asked to revisit a cold case from her first year on the job that will continue the department’s reckoning with the past well into the future.
All the while, Sam’s husband, Vice President Nick Cappuano, faces mounting pressure to declare his intention to run for president in the coming election, leaving the second couple feeling the strain at home—and on the job as the family endures the first holidays without their beloved patriarch, Skip Holland.
As always, when things become too hot to handle on the job, Sam and Nick turn to each other for solace in the storm.

2025 Update Most of my comments still stand but this time around, Sam’s arrogance really grated on me, particularly how she treated persons of interest. Granted they were not always the nicest bunch but she needed to rise above it. My rating stands.
2021 Review the setup… The new case that Lieutenant Samantha (Sam) Holland and her homicide team of detectives are handed is the murder of a woman who is inarguably the most hated person in the region. The victim, Virginia (Ginny) McLeod, was recently indicted for duping hundreds of investors, mostly friends and family, out of roughly $20 million through an investment Ponzi scheme. That means the list of potential suspects is massive. Meanwhile, Vice President Nick Cappuano, Sam’s husband, is being pressured to make a decision regarding his potential candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.
the heart of the story… One of the things I love about this series is the multiple plot lines in play in each story, many of them continuing arcs, which means it’s important to read the books in order. Detective Gonzales (Gonzo) is returning from a successful stint in rehab, hoping to return to his job without too much of a hit to his career. The shocking revelations regarding the shooting of Sam’s father years ago that implicated two well respected leaders within the police force have triggered an internal review that’s sure to expose more upsets. Sam is also launching a grief counseling group for families who have lost loved ones to murder. All of these are in process as the detectives do their job in solving Ginny McLeod’s murder. The investigation brings out a range of emotions regarding the need to seek justice for a reprehensible victim.
the narration… I continue to be glad that I switched to the audio format early in the series. The narrator does a great job handling a host of characters but one of the highlights is the banter between Sam and her partner Freddie Cruz. It’s funny and the barbs can sometimes be sharp but you always feel their affection for one another.
the bottom line… I enjoyed being back in this world. The case was interesting and even brought a bit of a surprise in its resolution. I didn’t know this would be the last book in the series but after the shocking ending, it all made sense. I’m also glad I waited until the first book in the new spinoff series was released so I can jump right in. This was a natural conclusion to a series I’ve enjoyed for so long.
Oh man, I just ADORE this series. It's like comfort food for the soul!!!
So, for anyone loving romantic suspense with a heavy focus on romance (POWER COUPLE ALERT!!!), and an amazing cast of characters - you MUST give this series a try!!
Although there are 16 books out already I'm telling you, you will DEVOUR them ALL, and have read them in no time!!!
If I could give Marie Force's latest installment in the Fatal Series ten stars, I would do it in the wink of an eye. Fatal Fraud is definitely a riveting whodunit -- powerful, engrossing, packed with suspense. Readers can expect to find lots of her trademark sharp, sassy and witty dialog and the classic and much-loved funny banter between the Cappuano family and friends. Topping it off with a well-balanced addition of intimate moments shared between the Vice President and Mrs. Cappuano, this one is about as perfect as it gets.
Without giving away anything, this one might be Force's best yet. I was completely bumfuzzled trying to solve Sam's case. There were surprises all over the board -- and you won't be disappointed with the updates on regular cast members, along with some new names and faces introduced.
What else can I say? I'll share one little teaser. Det. Cameron Green is now my new heartthrob!
I LOVED LOVED LOVED Fatal #16 -- and I think you will, too!
Every time I read a new book in this series, I wonder how Marie Force can possibly develop another exciting plot. After all, this is the sixteenth book in the series. I should not have worried because, as usual, she hit it out of the ballpark. I think I’ve mentioned before this is one of my favorite book series, and I wait anxiously for each new episode to be released.
The main characters in the series are Washington DC Metro PD Lt. Sam Holland and her now-husband, Nick Cappuano. Someone murdered Nick’s boss, Senator John O’Connor in the first book, and John’s father and other influential Democratic movers and shakers asked Nick to fill the empty seat. Shortly after, the Vice President stepped down due to illness, and Nick was chosen to move up to that position.
This all occurs while Sam is solving murders and adjusting to her new relationship with Nick. There is so much more to this ongoing story. I have loved being witness to the amazing character development of Sam, Nick, their adopted son Scotty, her father, sisters, and her team at Metro PD. This group of people is a full cast of characters, and one of the most enjoyable parts of the books is the continuous verbal banter between Sam and Nick, Sam and Freddie, Sam and Scotty, well Sam and just about everyone!
I love this series, and I want everyone else to as well. I devoured this book so fast that I will probably re-read just to see what I missed. When I reached the last page, I was so shocked at the ending that I laughed out loud. Now I have to wait until April to find out what happens next. Well played, Marie! I listened to this on Audible and as always the narrator, Eva Kaminsky, was perfect! I gave Fatal Fraud five fabulous stars!!!
Lt. Sam Holland and her team are sent to investigate the murder of Ginny McLeod. Everyone knew Ginny. She has been in the papers lately after bilking twenty million dollars from her friends and family in a Ponzi scheme. Her husband and two children claim that they knew nothing about her schemes and didn’t know what happened to the money. They also have alibis for the time when Ginny was murdered. Everyone hated Ginny after she took their money. With so many suspects, Sam has the impossible job of finding the killer.
Sam had her work cut out for her. No one liked Ginny. Most of them were happy that she was dead. I never picked out a suspect in this one.
This is the last book in the Fatal Series. I'm kind of relieved that this series is over. I started out loving the series, but I've been having a hard time with the lead character and her attitude. The mysteries have been solid, but I don't like that we must rehash the other things that have been going on in Sam and Nick's world book after book. Yes, we know that Sam loves being a mother, and it just kills her if she can't get home at night to tuck "the littles" in bed before they go to sleep. Yes, we know that Nick doesn't like his job as VP and is just waiting for his term to be up before going back to civilian life. Yes, we know that Sam doesn't think she needs any type of secret service protection, but the fact that she actually tries to lose them is just ridiculous. Anyway, this series is done and I'm not planning on continuing with the spinoff series. My rating: 3.5 Stars.
Wow! Way to raise the stakes. Well done Marie Force! That ending...omg. If you're a fan of romance suspense that leans heavily on the characters and relationships, this is the series for you. I'm very happy to see that it's spinning off into another series now. I can't wait to see what happens.
Same old, same old. Nothing changes, except for the mystery, which in this book was pretty good, what little page space Force allowed it between the rehash, angst etc, etc, etc. The victim is generally hated by everyone, and no one is sad she's dead. No one will admit to murdering her, but someone did.
Here is another Fatal series book and Sam and her team are looking for a killer. I love how each book is about a different murder and we get to tag along as it is solved. And we get to see into the life of these characters. I have loved each and every book and storyline of this series. I love how Sam, Freddie, Gonzo, and the rest of her team work together. They work like a well-oiled machine. And we get to see how everyone is coping with the loss of her father "Skip" Holland. I don't want to give anything away but I will say that if you love romantic suspense then this series is for you. I would recommend reading them in order so you can follow along with Sam and Nick's relationship better. You will not be disappointed. This is one of my all-time favorite series and I can not wait for more. May is too long to wait. Another great story from author Marie Force.
An excellent addition to the Fatal Series. A violent murder tied with a major fraud committed in the DC area. The usual characters make their appearances with some newbies added to the mix. Marie Force once again has written an excellent romantic suspense, with feeling and surprises! This is a must read for all Fatal fans new and old!
5 stars and 2 thumbs up

5 ⭐️ … WOW! What an ending to a really great line up of books! Sixteen in and I never felt the need to quit. LOL. I have to say I really enjoyed the ride.

It's not such a huge spoiler since MF has already published the spin off!
That said, I liked this one much more than the previous two, but I still find it vey unbelievable that ALL the couples are so in love and so good! Nobody is THAT good! The friendship and the integrity here is so OTT! I know that this is fiction, but still it seems like a fairy tale!
But I keep reading this series because I would LOVE if that kind of people were true!
Yes, I now it doesn't make sense, but that's how it is! LOL
Everything I ever wanted with this series. Enjoyed this present book, always good to see Sam and the team take up the cause for justice and see favourite characters storylines develop. And somersaulting with inner joy and delight for next steps. YAY!
I have read this series from the beginning and always the next book. This series never gets old and we get to see Sam and Nick find each other, fall in love, and build their family while solving crimes for Sam and being a politician for Nick. Fatal Fraud is another excellent story where we get to find out what's going on in the lives of Sam, Nick, their family, and friends and colleagues.
A beloved sergeant comes back after getting the help he needs and trying to continue his life working with the department and building his personal life. Sam and team gets a murder to solve where the victim was also a criminal who stole from friends, family, kids' friends parents, etc. She was not liked and there were plenty of motives - the few hundreds of people she stole from. No one seems to be sad that she's dead but Sam and her team must try to solve the murder since that is their duty. Nick finally comes to a decision about his future and what he wants to do after being VP. Everyone seems to have an opinion but Nick decides to do what he feels is best for him and his loved ones.
Sam and her family celebrate the first Thanksgiving without her dad after she and her team solves the murder. Thanksgiving brings about a few surprises that I don't think anyone saw coming. I can't wait for the next book....I want to know what's going to happen next!!!!
This has been one of the most explosive stories in the series. Sam and her team have to investigate a sociopathic woman who has created a Ponzi scheme and stole from her friends and family... Besides trying to solve a crime that she wished she didn't have to Sam and Nick have to deal with Nick's political decisions, an inconsiderate reporter, one of Sam's colleague's work decisions and everyday life... It was a hell of a ride and I only put the book down to sleep(I kept hitting myself with the ebook reader, I wouldn't have stopped otherwise :D)
I loved the story and OMG you won't be able to see the epilogue coming, trust me!
It was so nice to get a chance to visit with Sam, Nick, and all the others again. The case that Sam ended up with in this book was an extremely difficult one. There where a ton of surprising moments involving many of our favorite people. I couldn't help but smile every time that Sam threatened someone with her ever-present trusty, rusty steak knife. Sam and Nick had so many great moments with Scotty and the kids. I absolutely love seeing how the family is evolving. Scotty still amazes me with his sweet disposition and his maturity. We get to see how much he is adjusting to being an amazing brother. I know in the previous book we saw Sam decide to create a grief group and its first session was in this book. We get to see updates from many people that we met in previous books. It was special getting to see little updates on how things have been for them. Like all of the fatal books, you will not be able to put this book down. There are many things that happen in this book that will leave you stunned. I can't say enough amazing things about this book!! If I could rate higher than five stars I would.
This series is one of my top two series and cast of literary characters so I knew that I was going to enjoy Sam and Nick’s newest story, but I was not prepared to be blown away by the ending!! The buildup in their professional and personal lives was entertaining, the dialogue was full of humor, love and of course sarcasm, the blend of crime solving and caring for others was even more on display with the new support group and the ending...oh that ending!!!
There are so many characters and moments that just stand out and are wonderful. Scotty is more and more precious with each book. His family scenes and the parent responses are wholesome and smile inducing.
I had a suspicion due to some of the story path, but even then once I saw how it all came about my mouth dropped, I had tears🙈🤷🏻♀️ and the thoughts of: what the....brava...holy hell...and I want more...all raced through my mind!!
If you have not read this series I strongly recommend it!
Holy effing cow.. I never saw that coming!! This has to be the meanest cliffhanger I came across since Karen Marie Moning's Fever series.
It started slow, with a visit to Gonzo who is still in rehab and Sam, Nick, Jeannie, her husband Michael, Freddie and his wife Elin talking about the latest headline about a woman with a Ponzi scheme who swindled her family and friends millions of dollars. Later on dispatch calls with a homicide and when Sam and her team arrives at the crime scene, they discover that said woman has been murdered. The case is a nightmare with hundreds of suspects - all the people who have been cheated out of their savings by Virginia McLeod. In the middle of it all, Sam has to deal with the result of the nasty reporter who said hurtful things about Sam's adopted children, Nick's decision about to run or not to run for president and his mother surfacing again in the media with new stories about her son's life. On top of that, the FBI is investigating the whole squad to see if there are more corrupt police officers like Conklin and the first meeting of the grief group is about to take place. Again, a lot of action on Sam's plate..
The case itself was dragging with all the suspects who wanted to see Virginia dead and her family constantly swearing they had not the faintest clue about her cheating friends and family left and right out of their hard earned money while living large with expensive cars, gifts and holidays. The potential investigation of a 15 year old cold case which never really happened was a bit disappointing but we might get to see more in the next book. However, with that fulminant ending I'm not sure what will happen next.
Nick finally made a decision which was predictable after all. I won't say more to not spoil the book for others. A lot of things happened in the epilogue though and I cannot wait for the next book to come. The adoption / baby topic was mentioned again and I can't help to wonder if my wish for a successful pregnancy for Sam will come true. Marie denied that in the past and I can see her reason as this would change the drive of the story but since the storyline is already divided into all the different main characters and with the return of Gonzo I can totally see her sitting out nine months and him taking over. We could still see homicide cases with Sam on the sideline and it would take nothing away from the whole books. But this is just my wishful thinking and of course it is Marie's baby and her decision what to write and where to take the story. I just think Sam deserves the experience of growing a baby in her belly after all she went through on that end.
I have to investigate now when the next book is due and really hope that Marie won't have us waiting too long after that turn of events. I'm really curious what she has in store for us next. I never saw that end coming - kudos, Marie Force! 5 well deserved stars for book 16 which I devoured within hours.
To truly appreciate how much I loved the book I need a lot more than 5 stars!!!!!
Sam and Nick are back... Yay that is cause for celebration, as well as a day off work to truly side in and immerse myself in this amazing world again... So much happens but first up STOP! If you haven't read this series go back to the start it is totally worth it.
I'm a none-spoiler reviewer your just going to get how much I loved the book and wow it had all the feels... I mean all the feels it went beyond a roller coaster of emotions it was more like an exploding volcano of emotions and that ending!!! Yes well that just made my heart soar...
Sam and Nick are unflappable even when the world is throwing crap from every direction at them... Their main focus is their growing family then work and in this story Sam’s new murder case is a doozy, how do you do your job and find a murderer when the victim was such a horrible person? When it turns it the murderer was just as despicable... Talk about a tangled web Sam and her team have to unravel and wow Detective Green seriously stepped up in this one.
It was great to have Gonzo back and on the road to recovery it wouldn't be the some without him...
For me Scotty stole the show that kid is amazing and Sam is right one day he will take over the world...
A big thank you to Marie Force for such an amazing story in a bloody wonderful series and now I'm waiting with bated breath for the next thrilling installment.
I think I say this after every new book in this series, but it is absolutely true. The Fatal series is one of the very best. I get completely engrossed in the story and never want to put it down, even when the story is finished. Fatal Fraud had me guessing the entire time, wondering who the killer could be. It really was a very well written suspense. All of the characters continue to be amazing, and I love all of the side stories that are happening amidst the main plot. Sam and Nick will always be among my top favorite book couples. They never disappoint. I adore their growing family and all the fun they have together. Their love is intense and all consuming, and you can feel that in the writing. This book has some major OMG moments, and I can’t wait for what happens next.
The murder of a wealthy investment broker in her own home poses a significant challenge to Lieutenant Sam Holland and her team, as the victim has recently been charged with defrauding dozens of people, including family members and friends. Everyone, it seems, wanted Virginia McLeod dead, but who actually killed her?
Series note: This is the final installment in the Fatal series and is immediately followed by the first book in the spin-off, First Family.
While the series starts well and has tremendous potential, it begins to deteriorate after the first few books. I read it as part of a group buddy read and will not be continuing with the spin-off.
Let me be brutally honest - the ridiculous plotting, obnoxious heroine, and repetitive writing undermine what could have been an excellent book (and series). I am at the point where I cannot continue describing all of the problems with these books. Anyone interested can read my previous reviews. Suffice it to say, I cannot recommend the book or the series.
Thank you to my dear reading buddies for putting up with my complaints in the group read ❤️
A few story threads are tied up in this story but otherwise I found the plot lacking. plus, I saw the ending halfway through the book. however, I am. looking forward to the next Nick and Sam adventure.
Re-listened April 2021 - thought I'd refresh myself on where everyone was at before I get into the "new" series. Been looking forward to how Sam, Nick and Co. tackle the

Wow! I would've given this 3.5 stars if it wasn't because of that ending! I can't wait to see where MF goes with Nick, Sam and the kids. Good on her for taking back control of the future of the series.
As I've said before, the cases themselves are sometimes secondary to the people that live in these books. As readers of long-running series, we do tend to become very invested in the personalities and relationships of these characters.
The Fatal series has always been one of my favorites to read! I've read all 16 books and would rate this series a 4.5 overall. I love the characters and their connections with each other. I love how fast paced the story is with it still being able to be followed easily enough! I like the mystery and suspense to the books.
That being said, this was still good but it wasn't my favorite of the series. The mystery/suspense was a little weak. And, I missed some of the romance between characters like Nick and Sam and Freddie and Elin, etc that was normally there. I mean, their connections were still good...but I was waiting for something more.
Overall though, I would recommend it to readers of this series as it does show character story lines and even has a beloved character returning to the fold...or "Pit" in this case.
Anyway, still good, just wasn't my favorite of the series.
Wow!! I am so overwhelmed with emotions of joy right now! This story was absolutely amazing. I was hooked from chapter 1 and the storyline never disappointed. Author Marie is such a brilliant storyteller and I am truly excited to had read this beauty of a book. I have not laughed so hard with this Fatal Series as I did with this book. Sam and her partner, Freddy, are incredible characters. Their relationship is just as important to Sam as with her marriage relationship with Nick. I laughed out loud hard, because her banter with her partner is one of the best times I have read in a very long time. I absolutely adore the camaraderie between them.
Sam is my woman crush and Nick is what every woman needs in her life. Nick is powerful enough to control Sam and gentle enough to be able to give what Sam needs in a husband, which is tons of love and understanding. Sam and Nick is my top 3 of favorite couples and characters of all series I have read. I highly recommend this series, because you will absolutely enjoy it.
When given the opportunity to suggest murder/mysterious/romance books, this Fatal Series has always been my go-to series to talk about to whomever will listen. I am so excited to read the next-in-line book and it's already pre-ordered. Come on April 2021. Momma needs to know what happens next with Nick and Sam.
OUTSTANDING AS USUAL....A 10 STAR READ!!!!**********
This book had everything!!! It was an absolutely outstanding, riveting, engrossing and wonderful read!!!! I loved every second of it!!! I deliberately tried to "slow down" my reading speed because I didn't want it to end! I held off until the weekend to read it as my special treat for myself and I am so glad did I because I have learned with the Fatal Series that once you start reading you don't want to stop so I was finishing up the book at 3:45AM in the morning and it was worth every minute of lost sleep! 😁😊😃 ... As usual the suspense and drama, cleverly executed twists and turns just built up and up until I was on pins and needles to see what happened next. There were definitely moments where my heart was in my throat with concern and others were there were tears in my eyes at heartwarming moments!
I don't know how Marie Force does it but I always start her books like I am reading just any other author's book but by the time I am halfway through the first chapter I am hooked due to the fact that her books are written in such an amazing and enthralling way! The storyline in this book was so good... It was wonderful to meet up with Sam, Nick, and Scotty again and all of the other great people that populate this series.... I love every one of them as if they were real live people and was so glad to hear all about them again. I have re-read this entire series twice and am still enchanted with all of their ups and downs, challenges and triumphs, banter, friendships, loyalty, love and support for each other!!!! I highly recommend this book and the entire series... I have spent many enjoyable hours reading the Fatal Series and I guarantee that you cannot find a more interesting and enjoyable series!!!😇
Not leaving a star rating, because I haven’t read the extensive beginning of the series, so I don’t think that would be fair. I think it would have made a difference in connecting with the characters and writing style.
That being said, this book didn’t do much for me. I guess it falls into “romantic suspense” with a political bent (main character’s husband is Vice President), but it was neither very romance-y nor suspenseful. I found the action quite slow moving and the dialogue repetitive at best.
It did have strong themes of friendship and chosen family and was rather emotional in some scenes.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series. This book is every bit as good as the previous books in the series. In short, Nick is trying to decide whether or not the run for President, and Sam is handling the case of a woman who's murdered after she's scammed all of her friends out of money -- no shortage of suspects.
BUT the ending has a surprise twist that will make you tingle all over. Now, I cannot WAIT for the next book, which won't be released until April 2021. How will I survive until then?????
If you haven't read any of the Fatal series, then start with Book 1, and keep reading in order.
