Greg Rodwell is in love with his best friend. The problem? Her husband.
Foul-mouthed, legendary screw-up, and in love with my best friend. It’s my fault she married the local douchebag, faux celebrity who hates my guts. Now she has his baby.
Or so she thinks.
Although we didn’t go there, that innocent night we had together wasn’t so virtuous on my part. The truth would not only blow her mind but rock our world. Beyond twisted, I have wrongs to right, a woman to win, and vows to break. My heart be damned.
Unscrewed is the start of a new series, but you'll achieve maximum shock and awe if the Wild Sparks Series and The Keys to Jericho are read first.
Ren Alexander writes steamy contemporary romance, including the Wild Sparks Series, and contributes to K. Bromberg’s Everyday Heroes Series. Writing her romance novels with a hefty dose of reality, the good and bad, Ren embraces the gritty and raw with a side of funny and crazy. No matter what, there is always an explosion. You never know what you'll get in her mixed bag.
Relocating from Detroit, Michigan, Ren lives in Kentucky with her husband, two kids, and two cats.
Do Jewish vampires avoid the Star of David? Does killing time damage eternity? Do you need a silencer if you shoot a mime? Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane? If a person dies and then rises from the dead, do they get a refund for the coffin?
...our new receptionist is denser than a lead coffin and no doubt couldn’t write dialogue for porn.
…her Legal Eagles shirt is knotted to the side, calling attention to her belly button. She also cut a V into the collar of her shirt, showcasing her tits. It’s low enough that you can almost see their price tag.
Gloria laughs, and I’m stunned. In all the years I’ve worked with her, I’ve never seen that humanoid crack a smile. It’s like witnessing an alien abduction or playing cards with a ghost. No one would *ing believe me.
You’re like fogged glass I can’t touch. A solar eclipse I can’t look at. Forbidden fruit I can’t eat.
My Review:
Ren Alexander is an evil minx and seems to have bewitched me. Her word voodoo is strong and quite bawdy. But, hmm, I am deeply and irrevocably conflicted about this one… I am not sure what genre to use to categorize it, what to rate it, or even how I honestly feel about it. I’m all over the place with this book. The storylines captivated yet also made me itch and annoyed me greatly - yet I remained intrigued and highly invested and couldn’t seem to put my Kindle down. Amazon listed Unscrewed as a Romantic Comedy, but I have to disagree. There was no romance other than a fantasized one, and while there was a considerable amount of clever well-honed humor, the overriding tone was one of tension and angst - sigh. I had enjoyed and admired the irreverent and razor-sharp wit as well as the overall enigmatic persona of Greg Rodwell in the author’s previous Wild Sparks Series, but I found him rather exhausting in this book. I don’t believe a new reader could fully appreciate Greg without first reading the previous series. Greg deserves the exalted title of the Sultan of Snark, as while his humor was rather juvenile it was also keenly clever and highly amusing. However, when his life took a spiky downturn with a series of highly unusual and unfortunate events, his rapier wit twisted into a more caustic and abrasive outlook and took on a cruel middle-school mean-girl quality, which broke my heart.
But I also had empathy and sympathy for the Gregster as his life was in a meteoric downward spiral, which had me bracing for a total meltdown. Poor Greg was circling the drain, in constant turmoil, and fronting on overblown bravado while drowning in angst. He was also as sexually frustrated and randy as a pubescent teen; his inner musings were consumed with his constant and painfully erect appendage and his secret obsession and unrequited love for a married woman. Yet a good portion of this mess was not of his making and I empathized with the obnoxious twit while I also want to administer a few swift slaps to the head. And then there is the thorny issue of a cliffhanger. ;( I am hooked, and appalling so. Yet my conflict remains firmly rooted…
I don't even know where to begin with Unscrewed...... We get to see Greg Rodwell in a way that I would NEVER have thought was possible but more believable then most admit!! For those who have read the Wild Sparks series is well aware of Greg and his sense of humor and wit, they also know that he is very loyal to his friends and family. Very often people hide their demons in a closed jar... behind smiles and humor until one day the lid becomes UNSCREWED and it ALL comes pouring out!!! We follow Greg while he tries to come to terms with how his life ended up the way it did, AND WOW were my eyes opened to the various facets that make up Gregory Rodwell..... The emotions that were yanked from my soul while reading this book had me walking away and yelling to all the characters within these pages throughout the ENTIRE book!!! Well Done Alexander..... once again you blew me away with your words and leave me yearning for more!!!!!
This absolutely the worst book I have read this year. The writing is awful and the story is all over the place. It feels like a crappy stream of consciousness.
I had to wait for a day to review, the book hangover was immense and try as might, there wasn't enough wine to make the book continue on with more of the story. There are so many unanswered questions at the end of the book, but Unscrewed answered a lot of the questions that were raised in the Wild Sparks series. Greg Rodwell has been one of my favorite characters and his wit and sarcasm are right up my alley. Ms. Alexander gives Rod the best lines and the sharpest wit of the entire series. His "Rodisms" are laugh out loud, spit out your drink funny. However, his humor masks his pain, and Lord knows he's seen a lot of that in his life, both self-inflicted and forced on him by circumstances. The more painful his situation the more he uses humor to make his way through his day. Clear lines become blurred as the story progresses and relationships are budding, tested, and some struggle to remain what they should be. Secrets abound in this book, while some are recent, the past rears its ugly head and causes pain and chaos in its wake. Ms. Alexander's writing style is crisp and witty and her characters are likable (most of the time) and realistic. There were a couple of twists I didn't see coming, but that's half the fun of reading, the sudden twist. The characters in this series are like old friends, but it seems that some friends aren't what they appear to be. Here's hoping the rest of the story comes out quickly.
Unscrewed was really really good. Greg Rodwell was wow. Greg's sense of humor and wit as well s his loyalty is a really good character trait. As Greg comes to terms with how his life has turned out the emotional rollercoaster that is this book gets you from page 1.\
DNF 41% you really want me to believe a baby was conceived without IVF or vagina penetration?? I seriously can’t these characters are clueless on purpose! This man is so broken you can tell he tries so hard to hide it.
My rating system 5 stars- OMG it impacted my life. I must tell everyone I know. 4 stars- Damn….that was really good 3 stars- Kept me interested but needed a bit more. 2 stars- Disappointed wish it had been better 1 star- Wasn’t very good but finished for closure. No Stars- DNF gave it my best try.
Not sure where to start. This book is all over the place and at points can be harder to follow. The book is as titled Unscrewed. I would definitely say pay on this one and find another book.
WOW! Solid 3.5-4 stars. Lots to process with this book! I'll start with the positive, its an incredibly funny, very emotional journey. So many feelings to dissect and comprehend to put yourself in Greg's shoes. Its not a cut and dry romance. There are several times you will think 'wait, have I been wrong the whole time? Are we going in this direction?' only to be thrown off course. I think that has a lot to do with Greg's inner turmoil. It feels like real life problems influencing his decisions and decision making skills. By the end of this, I'm totally up in the air about how I want this to proceed and what I want to happen. I am really chomping at the bit for part two of this story. Honestly you will be too, even the parts I was not such a fan of I couldn't get away from. I'm surprised I didn't end up flinging my Kindle across the room as mad as I got. And steam! I'm pretty much addicted to smut and parts of this had me blushing, which is surprising given the way it ended. Greg is REALLY GOOD at dirty talk. With all that being said, there are a few things I did not like, I figured I'd detail them so you can see where I'm coming from although I'm sure others will enjoy this story BECAUSE of the things I'll point out rather than in spite of. I won't lie, it took me AWHILE to get into this book. I liked to be hooked from the beginning but I wasn't fully immersed until about 30%. It was a slow build up, but then BAM! Couldn't but it down, page turner for sure. Also, from what I understood its a stand alone, yet I felt like there was more to the story that would help me understand things that I was left out of. I need ALL the info to truly lose myself in a book. Also, I have a strong dislike of cliffhangers, but I can't complain as I knew in advance it would be. So as not to give away any spoilers, I'll leave it at that but really can't wait for part two!
I was lucky enough to beta read Unscrewed and let me just tell you .... you guys are going to LOVE Greg Rodwell. He is the most loyal man EVER!
Wish there were more Rodster's out there like him in the real world.
Greg has been in love with Hadley since FOREVER, but his mistake was to get her back together with the love of her life, but that was a stupid thing to do because he didn't know if maybe they could have become a couple. But I guess that's something he'll never know now!
Greg needs to move on just like Hadley did and he needs to find someone who will reciprocate the same feelings. But who could possibly be good enough for him?? Simone seems to be there for him at all costs, she helps him with his daughter and she likes spending time with him. Could there be something more there or is she just using him as bait to get with her brother's best friend? Greg is a good looking guy and women seem to want to get with him, so what could possibly be in the way of him moving on?
There is so much going on in this book and let's just say that the more you get into it the more things you find out and the more shocked you become.
I was honestly super surprised when I got to the end and found out things that I never imagined would have happened or thought anything of what some others were thinking throughout the whole story.
I absolutely loved everything about this book. It was extremely well written and the characters were phenomenal, all of them!
I can honestly say that I couldn't get enough of Greg Rodwell <3 <3
I can't wait to get more because this was left off in a cliffy?? Or so I think it was!
5 UNSCREWED STARS!!
**Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**
Greg Rodwell is a paralegal at Rhodes, Dryden, Charleton and Associates and he seems to have quite the reputation as a player. But he is in love with his married best friend and may or may not have one or two children by different women but he isn't sure.
Hadley Wilder is Greg's best friend and the woman he has been after for years but now she is married and keeps trying to set up Greg with different women.
But will Greg ever be able to get over Hadley and find someone he loves and when his shocking past is revealed will he be able to move on?
This was a book I really struggled with getting through. I felt like I was lost with certain characters and that I was put it into a series that had already been started.
I really didn't like Greg right from the beginning which did not help at all. It wasn't until the very end that I learned about his past and then I started to like him and feel sorry for him. Through the book he seemed like such a player and he possibly had two kids but was confused about how he could have had them which just threw me for a loop.
I wasn't sure what Hadley was doing as she kept setting Greg up with different women but she would get mad if he was with certain other women. She seemed to want the best of each world and then would be upset at Greg for certain actions.
Initially I thought Simone and Greg would be great together but then when everything went down I was shocked but it all ended weird and I am not sure what is going on there now.
The stuff with the paternity test with Shasta and Birdy was odd and I couldn't believe that Greg wouldn't double check things if he couldn't remember really completing other things.
The end was not surprising in a way but who knows what Hadley will do.
I had to wait to review this wonderful book as I had to read the rest of the books in this series to process all that was going on. While it didn't have me hooked in the beginning, I had to keep reading to find out what was going on and once I got into it, I could not put it down! While I did not read the previous series, and was confused, I am going to go back and find out the story of Rod's BFF Hadley. This is a new author to me and I will definitely be following her as I like her style!
Greg "Rod" Rodwell was a very witty paralegal that kept everyone on their toes. While his jokes are funny, it is to mask the pain he is feeling with the loss of his older sister and other things. I will admit I was a little confused at the start, but it kept my interest and I wanted to know more about Rod and why he was the way he was. I knew there was more to him right from the start after reading his sisters letter to him after she passed away. We follow Rod trying to figure out how his life came to what it currently is. While he is in love with his best friend Hadley, who is married with a baby, we find out why he is the jokester and what pain he is trying to hide. He definitely takes you on a roller coaster ride. I definitely did not see the ending play out the way it did.

Mind blown. Though this book is a stand alone, I highly recommend reading the Wild Sparks series first. Greg Rodwell is one the the most loved characters from Ren Alexander’s books. So when she announced his own book was coming, I was absolutely stoked. We all know Rod as the sarcastic smart@$$ with a heart of gold. But this book gives you an in-depth look into his real world. The many sides of Greg. His loyalty to his best friend, and coworker, Hadley is his downfall. She seems to tear him up without giving much thought as to where her words or actions may leave him. Greg needs to move on from the hold she has over him. Even though she’s married, her bff status has to go. And in this book it begins to take place. I’ve always wanted him to have his hea. Hopefully this is his turn to get what he truly deserves. Rod is still one of my all time favourite book boyfriends, I can’t wait to see what happens to him and his upside down world. Hoping book 2 comes out quickly. 5/5stars
Let me just start by saying that out of all of Ren's books, this is the one I have anticipated the most. Greg has been my favorite character since the early days of reading the Sparks series. He's such an enigma I couldn't wait to read about. I mean, sure, we all see his fun sense of humor and his consistent ways of deflecting anything serious which make him all the more interesting to me.
I am happy to report that Ren did NOT disappoint in telling Greg's story. I can't even properly convey the crazy mix of emotions I felt while reading his story. One moment I was laughing at Greg being his typical self and in the next minute I wanted to cry and lets not forget anger, ohhhh the anger! Greg's story is the best one yet. If there was a possibility to give this book a 10 star review I would have. I can't wait to read the rest of Greg's story.
Whatever your expectations are for this book, forget it. Leave it at the door. This book will supersede all of your expectations. Thank you Ren for kicking ass in telling Greg's story. You rock!
I went into this book with certain expectations of our favorite Greg Rodwell. Big mistake on my part.
We first met Greg through Ren Alexander’s Wild Sparks series. He’s Hadley’s best friend and has a certain jokester, jerk, protector attitude. Well in this novel, we see everything through his point of view and we learn just why exactly he is so guarded and why everything he says is portrayed as a joke.
This is yet another one of Ren’s books that will make you laugh, cry and scream through it all. She never fails to pull me in and rip my heart out all in a matter of pages. Leave all expectations at the door with with one!!!
While it is not necessary, I do highly recommend you read the Wild Sparks series and The Keys to Jericho prior to reading this spin off. It will give you a real picture of Greg Rodwell.
I was given this novel by Ren Alexander in exchange for an honest review.
I try to leave while not looking directly into her eyes, for fear of burning my retinas, but she keeps her hands on my arms, massaging her fingers into me. I’m nauseous. Her pageboy blonde hair is gruesome. Whoever cuts her hair should be stabbed to death with their own scissors and dumped along an isolated highway for vultures to feed on, not that I’ve thought about it. She’s fifty-something who thinks she’s twenty-something but looks sixty-something. And not in a charming way. She’s fifty-something who thinks she’s twenty-something but looks sixty-something. And not in a charming way.
Instead of moving, she blocks my path, still holding onto my arms. “When’d you get these guns, Rod? You’ve been hiding these somewhere, for sure.” Like I just siphoned a mouthful of gasoline and swallowed—wishing I really were on my way to a quick death—I make a face, wrenching from her grip and sidestepping her. Note to self: Bring a can of gasoline to work, either for dousing or swallowing.
Uh...hello?!? What did I read? Greg Rodwell is full of surprises. I love every word Ms. Alexander has written but Greg’s story was different, a good different. I was making conclusions and then I was wrong. Seriously so wrong. This book stole everything from me, Greg’s story mesmerized me and had me gasping for air. I really believe this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Unscrewed flowed from page one to the very end, rapidly. I could not fathom the things Greg said, did, and experienced. Never could I have imagined what unfolded in this book. Humor, despair, love, and of course humping- all of it, is in this perfect book. I could go on and on but let’s just say this- if you’ve read Greg in the Wild Sparks series you ain’t seen nothing yet. He will blow your freakin mind.
I struggled to get into the book. It was a bit confusing at first and it didn’t help that it ended with a lot of unanswered questions for me. The issues written about is something relatable, but I would have liked if the whole issue with the main character was raised a lot sooner. I understand that this is something not really talked about in society, but being such a controversial topic, we need more information. I don’t know if there is going to be a sequel, but I hope there will be. I really need answers to a lot of questions. I also don’t know if there was a prequel to this, but I got that impression at times. At this stage the title of the book is also confusing, as I feel the main male character was more ‘screwed’ at the end.
The book will make you think you're going in the right direction, but then Greg leads you another way. I am not into smut or dirty talking, but it takes a while to get into the book. Usually at the beginning of a book, if it don't grab me, I'll take my time reading the book. I skimmed over it, and found spots that hooked me so I started slowly reading it again. Then, I'd run into another part, that I skip over. I started reading it again, but taking in everything. Turmoil, sex, and trouble---get your copy. You'll love it. I learned a long time ago, if something is hard to digest, then it must be worthy to read. Truly amazing way it turned out, not like what I expected. Hmmm, totally amazing the way it ends.
Ok so i was all prepared to write a bad review for this book but i kept reading and my heart started to break for Greg. I was gonna complain on how whiny and indecisive he is but as you keep reading you find out why he has so many issues. Greg has a lot of issues in this book. He had something traumatic happen 10 yrs ago and hasn't dealt with it at all. Its the stem behind his issues. He thinks he's in love with his best friend but soon finds out that may not be. He doesn't make good decisions which leads to even more issues in his life. Despite his whineness, i was seriously rooting for him to figure out his life. By the end, some of my suspicious were answered and for that i was happy. This book touches on so many issues but it's handled very well. Kudos top the author!
This is the first in a new series and what a mindblowing tale this is! Greg is in love with his best friend who is married, and he masks his pain and uncertainly behind his sarcastic and witty sense of humour, and his is fiercely loyal to his friends and family. Relationship boundaries are evaluated, and the past had a habit of coming back to haunt. No spoilers: - this is a must read, you will not be disappointed. This is a well written amazing story which is emotionally charged, and filled with humor, witty banter, secrets, twists, surprises, and love, which leads to an all-consuming entertaining page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
This is the first book in a new series but I have learned the characters have history in another series. I have not read the Wild Sparks series but do not think I need to. Don't get me wrong, I read and enjoyed Greg's book without the background. But seeing the various comments - this has me curious. I appreciate a character that does not fit the standard mold, they are uniquely themselves and I see Greg as being this character. I enjoyed the story and looking forward to both going back to the previous series and moving forward with this one. I am committed to more with the cliffhanger at the end of this book. Enjoy!.

This book was kinda confusing it starts out like it picks up in the middle of a story. This is the first one I have read by this author so I had to go back and double check what book I was reading and that I was at the beginning. Overall it is a good book, the main character Rod is hard to understand. He is really fake throughout most of the book. He goes off on a lot of tangents in his thought processes which gives the insight into how he thinks. Overall it has plenty of humor and romance and heartbreak in it to make the journey reading it worth it. I would recommend reading the first two books these characters are in before reading this one.
Unscrewed is another great read from one of my favorite authors, Ren Alexander. If you have read the Sparks series and Keys to Jericho, then you are familiar with Greg "Rod" Rodman. Greg is the BFF of Hadley and is a wise cracking smartass who works as a paralegal. This book is his story, and we learn what is behind the jokes. Simone, Shasta and Hadley are key characters in this story. For those of you who have read all of Ren's books (and If you haven't you really need to) this book will blow your mind. I definitely changed my opinion on some of the characters. A must read!!!!!
This book is just amazing and left me wanting more from Ren as usual!! Her words have left me knowing that Rod had a lot of issues he always hid but we kinda figured that to start with. But we left so much with this book that I had to stop so many times to gather my own feelings for Rods sake. He has been keeping so much from everyone is the best way to say it. He keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting to know more. Ren is amazing and I can’t wait to see what she does with the next book and all I can say is please hurry! I love all your books and can’t wait for more.
3.5 star I really liked the idea of this book but felt i needed more from it, I am hoping as the cover on Amazon shows book 1 we will get to know the characters more and things get a bit more fleshed out. I liked everyone but felt they were all perhaps a bit immature at times for their age and this made me think well no wonder their lives are a bot of a mess. There is some good humor mixed in with struggles and frustrations they go through as well as a part where its pretty darn sad, the writing is good and a foundation laid to build some great books on so I hope we get a book 2!
Unscrewed should come with it's own VIP parking pass and annual membership because it is a themepark-worthy rollercoaster. I had not read any of the prior books to get all of the background, but since this can be read without all that I dove in headfirst anyways. I have to say I was not prepared at all for the snark and the angst that was Greg Rodwell, yet behind the biting wit and broken layers there are more broken layers, and a man that you can't help but feel for as the pain of the past and chaos of the present collide.
loved it !! hated it !!! it's one of those books... this is a spin-off series... from wild sparks... love and hated Greg... and Hadley... well... this is their story... to be in love with your married best friend.. is something you would not wish on your worst enemy.. and that's Greg, the jokester and Hadley... he's not the enemy but... it's kind of heart breaking really... this one is not for everyone...keep an open mind...

I’m reading this book, thinking, this guy has more thoughts going on in his head then a woman. Then I realize, a woman wrote it! This guy has 3 women. One that he wants, one that wants him, and one that needs him to help her make another guy jealous… all while having some messed up mind games from the past. He is totally UNSCREWED
