Rate this book
When last did you get lost? We rarely do in the era of Google Maps and Waze, but satellite navigation systems are of no use when disruption turns our lives upside down. When swirling mists of uncertainty block our view of the future, we might question our ability to cope. But with awareness, determination and practise we can improve our competence, build our resilience and confidence, and gain a sense of control, even when everything feels out of control. Whether your life has been disrupted by death, divorce, disease, Covid-19 lockdown, working from home, moving town, starting a new job, or any of a host of other disruptive events that can either make or break you, this book will guide you to the best possible outcome. Disruption is never comfortable, but regardless of whether it is positive or negative, it is a catalyst for change. Future-proof Yourself provides simple but effective lessons and frameworks to help you future-proof yourself to win at both work and life. Dip into chapters on disruption, remote working, resilience, teamwork, leadership and family, and learn how to remain focused, utilise pressure and create a recipe for personal success. A distillation of Nikki Bush’s professional insights as a human-potential and parenting expert, this book is a must-read for anyone looking to harness their courage and curiosity to build a rewarding, fulfilling future for themselves no matter what life throws at them.

This quote from Nikki Bush’s book “Future-Proof Yourself: How to win at work and life” really resonated with me. If I’m really honest she got me at the dedication, on the first page.

I know many people feel that one can compartmentalism work and life. For those not familiar with the term compartmentalism it simply means “keep separate” - like keeping different boxes or compartments for each part of your life. And maybe some can and do, compartmentalize fairly successfully…I think they are more inter-related than we care to admit.

The reason I make this point is because at one point I did think. “If I was still working in corporate this would be on my favourite book lists” and found myself skimming the work summaries .
However each chapter consistently closes off with a summary of work and family life take-aways.
So as I progressed I actually loved seeing how the two areas intertwined and realized that part of the future-proofing yourself is about starting to see the connection so just as relevant for the home executives with a side hustle, small start- up, in fact any one brand business. You just got to be in the room with today’s top thinkers it’s like a corporate getaway at half the cost…

When I was in corporate, engagement was an issue, when I worked in voluntary organizations, I learnt how personal power trumps positional, when I was a stay at home mom, I realized that parenting is the ultimate leadership challenge! All covered in the book…

if you can’t regulate yourself, you sure aren’t going to inspire a team or a family in this ever changing world.
So best we learn to enable courageous conversations and reframe attitudes or experiences. This book is an all round favourite for me.
