Lornyc is good at keeping secrets, because secrets can get you killed.
Will someone rid him of this troublesome Mage? Seemingly not, and Lornyc’s going to have do it himself. There’s a good reason no one had invoked the Reckoning to become the Supreme Mage of Beher for over a quarter of a century, but Lornyc couldn’t keep his big mouth shut.
Five tasks, five chances to fail, and that’s just the warm up for the magical head-to-head. Pity his Reagalos powers don’t work like Mage magic, so he’ll need to think fast, and run even faster.
REBECCA COHEN spends her days dreaming of living in a Tudor manor house, or a Georgian mansion. Alas, the closest she comes to this is through her characters in her historical romance novels. She also dreams of intergalactic adventures and fantasy realms, but because she’s not yet got her space or dimensional travel plans finalised, she lives happily in leafy Hertfordshire, England, with her husband and young son. She can often be found with a pen in one hand and sloe gin with lemon tonic in the other.
This is an epic conclusion to what has been a quite outstanding series which marries Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Paranormal and Urban Fantasy elements into a cracking tale.
In Restitution, it all comes down to the wire and Rebecca keeps the tension on a knife edge from the moment this book starts.
Lornyc is on the verge of either utter triumph or complete failure, there are no half measures and his visit to take part in the Mage Reckoning will prove once and for all if the Valen Emaus' scheming was justified.
It's a heady rush with Lor and Methian closer than ever, each growing from the support of the other to find strength and courage.
There's twists, turns, and at one point I was seriously wondering if Lor was going to turn into a dragon 🤣 as everything was just getting more and more epic in scale.
The ending was everything I hoped it would be and, while there are still a few wider questions left open, the main narrative with Lornyc and Methian's partnership is very much satisfactorily concluded.
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.
I want this book like yesterday. But for now, all I can do is wait... 6 1519222428 days to go!! So, the book is finally here...
I just feel disappointed. I was really looking forward to finally reading the end of this story and after loving 'Avarice', I was anticipating this book with a renewed eagerness but it just didn't live up to my expectations.
The book was off to an awkward start and I really felt that the story would grow out of it as we proceeded into the thick of things but it never does. The truth is this book has nothing to offer, it doesn't have a gripping plot and neither does it have any true moments of character development.
The central plot of the book is the Reckoning but it was massively underwhelming. It takes the book more than half its length to finally get to the challenges and the initial half of the book doesn't do a good enough job, to excite you, about the events to come. Frankly, for the most part, I really didn't understand what the challenges were about until we finally got to them because the explanations surrounding the challenges at the beginning of the book just doesn't make much sense. I feel like that would have been a good time to really delve into the history of Beher and what the challenges tested but the book really squanders the opportunity, I for one would have really liked to know more about the Quinto period and what all those odd objects had to do with it.
Also, the first and last challenges have no apparent difference between them which begs the question, what sets them apart, why have two challenges that test the same thing. Also, the last challenge is such a dud and the fact that it is supposed to be a showstopper makes it even more unimpressive. A better version of the event would've been if the aim had been to rescue your fair maiden from the dragon controlled by your opponent.
The Reckoning is basically five challenges followed by a head-to-head. Now the problem is that Lornyc is really overpowered by the end of 'Avarice' and there is literally nothing the book does to convince me that this isn't a cakewalk for him. In fact, a better thing to do would have been for him to lose the history challenge instead of kind of cheating at it as that would have evened the playing field and given Ariel, the first chance to attack going into the head-to-head, as the person with the most points at the end of the five challenges gets the chance to attack first. It probably wouldn't have made much of a difference given how powerful Lornyc is but it would have made things entertaining. Secondly, given the image we have of Ariel and the House of Charta (considering what her distant relative did to the House of Heritine), I would have expected Ariel to cheat like hell and that would have been interesting because it would make her more of a challenge because she really isn't one.
In all fairness, Ariel does try to cheat but Lornyc prevents her from being able to which frankly isn't half as interesting and secondly, leads off to a subplot that at this point in the series is just repetitive and drab but more on that later. Frankly, it was kind of disappointing that she only had one ace up her sleeve which basically alludes to the fact that she does end up underestimating Lornyc despite the fact that she repeatedly vows not to. I would have loved if the head-to-head had been more extravagant and life-threatening because Ariel's fate at the end of this book is very badly done, so it would have been better if her fate had come at the end of the head-to-head.
At the end of the book, we realise that the choice of the adjudicators, who judge the challenges had been manipulated to favour Lornyc's choices. Truthfully this would have made no difference if the contest is indeed fair and there is nothing in the book that alludes to it being otherwise because even if Lornyc had lost all five challenges he would have still won the head-to-head just because of his sheer power but in this light, it feels like he was favoured and that the whole process was somehow unfair even if it wasn't. This was one of those things that made no impact on the plot but was somewhat of an ugly accoutrement to it serving no purpose whatsoever.
Speaking of ugly accoutrements to plots that serve no purpose what was the point of revealing the fact that Lornyc's siblings and uncle were acting as reservoirs when that lead nowhere. I expected it to be essential in the extravagantly fantastical version of the head-to-head that lives in my brain.
One of the subplots in this book is about Phase Two of the Emaus Protocols. It would've been so much better if this whole subplot was a flourish at the end to demonstrate that Methian and Lornyc had a bigger destiny awaiting them instead of stringing it out in the background of the entire book. It also doesn't make sense to string this plot out because that destiny that it alludes to is still years in the future like a hundred years in the future, so having it be drawn out to serve as some sort of a reveal (or whatever the hell it's purpose is) is just poor planning. It would have made a good ending but as it stands in the book it's just drab.
I feel like the worst thing this book does is that it rehashes the same plot for Methian and Lornyc, Methian gets jealous over Lornyc and Lornyc is completely unsympathetic to his plight, though the whole thing is handled more maturely than it is in "Idolatry", it's still the same thing and after the events of "Avarice" I thought we were behind this. Also, the storyline with Tolem is just uncomfortable I can't imagine why the author decided to do things this way, we already know how possessive these two are of each other and given their history even maturity wouldn't have helped with the events that occurred. Also, I didn't like how dismissive Lornyc, initially is, of Methian's concerns especially because he is equally as possessive of Methian. This is was just one unnecessary plotline that actually would have served a better purpose had it played out till the end.
The only part of the book that excited me was when the possibility of mpreg comes into the picture.
This was just a bland read and there is very few content of import over very many pages. I will be reading the prequel and I really think that it will be amazing, as to the future series centring Lornyc and Methian we will wait and see.
Restitution is the fourth and final book in the entertaining and wonderful Reagalos Series. What a wild ride it has been with all of the endearing characters in this story that married elements from Science Fiction and Fantasy.
The Mage Reckoning would be the final test that Lornyc needs to overcome in order to unite all of the Five Cities as well as right the wrong done to House Heritine - the family that his mother belonged to. In order to do so, he would need to defeat the head of Behern, Arial Charta who will use everything in her power to not let Lornyc get his victory. Everything hinges on Lornyc completing the five challenges of the Mage Reckoning or he loses all that he has worked hard to have. With Methian by his side and the guidance of Kat Warrenger, he embarks on this journey that will define whether the Emaus Protocol is justified and Lornyc is the one that has been prophesied.
Apart from the very interesting twists and turns, the suspense and the secrets being slowly unraveled, the growth in the relationship between Methian and Lornyc has been my favorite part of this book. It was lovely to see the two of them grow closer than ever. Sure there were some parts where they had some misunderstanding, but what married couple doesn't? They were able to smooth that out pretty fast as they are able to communicate better than they previously had. The way that Lornyc trusts and depends on Methian during the course of the entire event of the Mage Reckoning is a far cry on how their relationship was during their early days of being married. Their partnership is now more on an even ground than what it was before.
Their love has been tested again and as always, they were able to weather it and have the experience enrich and strengthen the bond they have. The maturity they exhibited here was the result of all the trials they've overcome and what a character development it has been for both of them.
Shoutout as well to the supporting characters. They've been interesting, diverse and as nuanced as they can get with the limited exposition that they got. Their relationship with the main leads have been rich and layered. Their interactions have been fun and their dialogues witty.
There still remains some questions left unanswered, however Restitution ties up nicely the main narrative that encompasses Methian and Lornyc relationship. The ending also leaves open a chance for more adventures in the future should the author decides to do so.
Overall, I am giving this book a 4.25 stars out of 5 stars.
I received an ARC of this book via GRR and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.
“Restitution" is the final book in the incredible and imaginative “Reagalos” series by Rebecca Cohen. I highly suggest reading the “Reagalos” series in order: “Servitude”, “Idolatry", and “Avarice”. Every novel get’s more exciting!
With the fear of being tricked, Lornyc will face the “Reckoning” with Methian by his side. He will have to compete against, Supreme Mage of Behern, Arial Charta and complete the challenges of the five tasks: detailed spell work, large-scale events, healing arts, quest of five and here be dragons.
Lornyc will also seek out advice from Kat Warrenger, and how will Lornyc fair in choosing his other Adjudicators.
Lornyc and Methian will also have their love tested once again. It seems they have gained a strange ally in Tolem, husband to Arial Charta. Can Tolem be trusted? Will Lornyc’s plan to help Tolem work and will Caveer Guard, Cupris be willing to help?
Anthon, Vella, Talis and Nathaniel are still adjusting to the orbs. Will they be able to recover in time to support Lornyc?
Lornyc has so much to loose if he fails. Most importantly he could loose Methian.
When all is said and done will the Valen practices and Emaus Protocol fail or become a new revelation?
I have to admit, I am not one for fantasy and magic and other worlds but I do keep an open mind. With the “Reagalos” series Rebecca Cohen grabbed me from the very start. Not only was it well written but the adventure, secrets, suspense, magic, and characters just kept me wanting more. Rebecca does not miss a beat with her fantastic, colorful, descriptions that the brings magic alive to the page. I enjoyed this entire series! It kept me in suspense at every turn of the page and I couldn’t wait to read the next novel.
I liked all the character, especially Lornyc. It took me a while to like Mathias, but he proved himself to me. My favorite and funniest was Kat Werrenger! Lornyc’s siblings: Anthon, Vella and Talis brought the camaraderie. There’s quite a few more that deserve mention and because they all brought something special to this series.
The “Reagalos” series has everything: science, magic, mages, secrets, a curse, politics, murder, betrayal, orbs, tunnels, danger, humor, adventure and so much more. Most of all it’s about friendships, loyalty, love of family, and a love that will last forever!
Even though “Restitution” brings the “Reagalos” series to a close, Rebecca Cohen has plans for more Lornyc and Methian adventures. But before that, she has a prequel in the works, hoping it will be out soon!
Reviewed for Love Bytes – 4.25 hearts. Embracing his mother’s heritage and seeking compensation for past injustices, Lornyc makes a play for the mage city of Beher via an event called The Reckoning. To succeed, he must win a series of face-off tests against the current incumbent. Elsewhere, the Valen recognize the qualities between Lornyc and Methian and make plans accordingly. Restitution is the fourth book in the Reagalos series and marks the end of Lornyc and Methian’s current adventures – although there will be a prequel in the new year. It also brings a welcome return to a world that I’ve fallen in love with. The story is told in the third person, from multiple viewpoints - mainly those of Lornyc and Methian. I received an advanced uncorrected proof – therefore I won’t be commenting on any technicalities. The trials Lornyc must face range from intellectual to physical. Everything is in the wording of the challenge – which can have multiple interpretations. As such, much of the book's first half is dedicated to preparations for the ‘The Reckoning’. Methian’s birthday is also on the horizon, and I am happy to say that the event was an absolute joy to read. Vella (Lornyc’s sister) and Urla (Methian’s mother) were a caustic delight – I loved every word that they uttered and the brutal honesty behind them. While reading, the love put into this world by the author is obvious – especially as the door has been left open for future adventures. I appreciated the thought and depth that went into creating this word, but I believe overenthusiasm for the world got the better of the author - less could have been more. The extensive narrative occasionally gave too much detail, diluting the effectiveness of some scenes. If a few explanations had been removed, there would have been room to bring in Lornyc’s brothers and sisters in a way that was hinted at but never materialized. I found Restitution to be a fitting, entertaining addition to the Reagalos series. Lornyc and Methian are a wonderful couple who have a place in my heart, and there were many places within the story that I found myself openly smiling. However, it could have benefited with a little less explanation and more action – that would have made a good book… great. This book was provided free in exchange for a fair and honest review for Love Bytes.
Restitution is a thrilling conclusion to the Reagalos series complete with everything I could have asked for including action, adventure, magic and mystery. I'm happy Methian and Lornyc have fully embraced how amazing they are together, ready to take on the political landscape of the Five Cities as the power couple they truly are, even if their communications skills are still a bit weak.
For those who've read this story and this series, does it seem like Rebecca Cohen has left a few loose ends? I'm not sure if it's intentional or just my wishful thinking, but I'd love to see where Rystal Lake goes from here. Cohen hints at several potential story arcs, including Phase Two (no spoilers here), as well as a couple of romantic entanglements that would be fun to follow. I really hope it's in the card to explore this world more in the future, but if not, I'm happy to have discovered it through this series.
Restitution is Book 4 in the Reagalos series and should be enjoyed in order. I love this series and this book was a wonderful addition, I didn't want it to end. In this book Lornyc competes against Arial, the Supreme Mage of Beher in the Reckoning. There are five tasks which they are judged on and a final head to head display of magic. This book is action packed and filled with emotion. If Lornyc becomes Supreme Mage of Beher can he help the people who are suffering there? He knows something must be done. I was so glad Lornyc was able to help Tolem, in more ways than one. And then Tolem was able to help himself. This series is definitely an adventure and so worth the read. I highly recommend this book and series and hope for more from this world. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Lornyc could not keep his mouth shut and now he is facing the first Reckoning in quite some time. He will be required to compete in five tasks and then go head-to-head against the powerful Supreme Mage of Beher. His powers do not quite work like Mage magic so he will definitely need some help and direction. And some help he does get.
What an amazing conclusion to this series! But is it really? It is predicted that the author is not done with these two and plans more books. Lornyc and Methian are incredible heroes and are dedicated to each other. Their relationship and love grows and changes, evolving into a solid marriage with respect, love and desire. Lornyc’s performance in the tasks was amazing and Methian was right there to encourage and support. These two will do amazing things together. I loved this series from the first book to the last.
First things first— this is part of a series, and in order to see how things have built to where they are now, you’ll want to read the previous books. Here, we get to see Lornyc face some epic challenges, and all of the things that have characterized the series so far: imaginative world building, immersive plotting, and complex, interesting characters, are on full display. It’s hard to put into words exactly how far Lornyc has come, in so many ways, but he’s still a really compelling mixture of strengths and weaknesses, and his relationship with Methian is a source of strength for him and one of the most likable things about him. A good book in a seriously good series: well worth checking out.
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have really enjoyed this series with its fantasy and magic, action and adventure, fantastic world-building and great characters. I love Lornyc and Methian, and how their love endured all the trials set against them. This is the fourth book in the series, and they should be read in order for best enjoyment. The series is full of danger, secrets, magic, political machinations, and so much more. Although this is the end of the Reagalos series, I hope the author will bring us more stories of Lornyc, Methian, and their family and friends.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
This is a direct sequel to Avarice, the third book in the series, and unfortunately the last one in the series (for now, I hope). While we are quite sure how it is going to end, it was still engaging to read the events in the story. This book sort of reminded me of JK Rowling's The Goblet of Fire (in the Harry Potter series), with its magical tasks competition theme.
Finally, what I find amazing is Rebecca Cohen's consistency in maintaining the same level of writing and storytelling all throughout the four books in the series. Looking forward to more novels set in the Five Cities universe.
I quite simply couldn't put this absolutely brilliant book down! An astonishing conclusion to what has been an astounding series! This had me hooked right from the first words written.I love both main characters and the incredible world they live in. I want to say so much more about this story but,I won't,as I don't want to spoil this absolutely brilliant book for anyone! I received an ARC copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.
A great conclusion to the series. We get to see Lornyc's and Methian's relationship evolve and deepen and the challenges Lornyc has to meet are reminiscent of the Labors of Hercules. With Methian's support he is up for those challenges.
This was a great conclusion to a great series. I really enjoyed this book and this series as a whole. I do look forward to what is next from this author.
RESTITUTION is the fourth book in the Reagalos series and brings to a close the story between Lornyc and Methian. You really need to read this as a series, otherwise, it just won't make sense. But then, would you expect it to, if you started at book 4?
Although this is a hard book for Lornyc, it was probably the easiest of the lot for me as the political machinations take a back seat to an epic competition where the prize is to be the Supreme Ruler of Beher.
The relationship between Lornyc and Methian continues to grow, no matter what is thrown at it. The supporting characters are still there, but we hear less of them in this one. The concentration really is on Lornyc and Methian, and I'm so glad it was!
I can't say any of it was a surprise, as such, but I wasn't reading it for surprises this time; just for the excellent standard of story-telling I have come to expect from this author. I had high hopes for Beher. Tolem was a great addition, especially for Cupris, and I hope we see more of them in the future.
This was a brilliant ending to their story, although it has been left WIDE-OPEN for further stories (hint hint - YES, PLEASE!) featuring both Lornyc and Methian and also ALL the other characters.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series from beginning to end, and I just don't think I'm ready to let them go yet. Absolutely recommended by me.
