Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.

Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"

It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.

It was the cover that initially attracted my attention and then once I read the blurb, I knew I really wanted to read the book. I have also read other books by this author so like to take a look at other releases written by her. The cover shows two armed women looking at a fire that is nearby. This could actually be a snapshot of a scene from the book, the two women being Melanie and Lizzie. The cover does its job well as it encourages you to wonder who the women are, why they are armed with guns and what is going on around them.

The book begins with two of the main characters, Melanie and Lizzie being coerced into staying after clock off time to tidy up after the Christmas Party at Beaton’s food factory, where they have worked for years. It used to be a great place to work with their previous manager, but since his son, Derrick took over things have changed and not for the better. Despite most of the other workers leaving, Melanie & Lizzie are crawling about on the floor under the tables cleaning up spilled food and drink. It’s when they are tidying reusable items away that they discover a closet full of supplies that are about to become very useful.

Then the EMP hits and Melanie & Lizzie are compelled into helping their rather miserable, overbearing boss to help him track down his son, Nathan who sneaked out of the factory and is now outside alone in a breaking down world. Things are rapidly going downhill, people are taking whatever they want from those who have it at gunpoint! It soon becomes apparent to the two women that they cannot reason with people like Derrick and those around them, they have to become tougher and fight for what they need. It becomes rapidly apparent that Derrick is more than just a prepper. Derrick has plans, big plans to be in charge of his very own safe haven, the Beaton’s Food Factory! Any supplies Derrick doesn’t have, he will send his mini army of fellow preppers out to take at gun point if necessary. When Melanie and Lizzie realise the true horror of Derrick’s big plan, and what life would be like living under his dictatorship they decide they need to get away from him, but he’s not an easy man to get away from. Despite the fact he has found his son, he doesn’t want to let the two women leave. Whilst Melanie and Lizzie are being forced at gunpoint to stay with Derrick, trying to work out an escape plan whilst avoiding being shot. Melanie’s husband has found their daughter Shona, and they are trying to find Melanie. In fact, they end up finding Melanie and Lizzie at a pivotal moment for the two women. The Pearson family and Lizzie realise just how bad things have got when they get to Lizzie’s parents’ address and find her parents injured. When Mark is possibly fatally injured it soon becomes apparent the nearest and maybe only place to access the supplies they need for Mark is Beaton’s Food Factory.

If I had to pick just one favourite character it would have to be Melanie, who seems to have had a rather chequered past, but the skills she was very proud of at the time and the fact she actually taught some of them to Lizzie’s dad end up coming in very useful. It seems like Melanie has been through a lot in her life and it only really began to turn for the better when she came in to contact with her best friend, Lizzie and her parents.

I really enjoyed reading this book and felt pulled in almost immediately! The book began relatively “normal” with two women being almost forced by their rather overbearing boss to stay behind to clean up the Christmas party. Then the EMP hits and the world changes rapidly to an extremely dangerous place when it is ruled by those with the most guns! The book ends on a real cliffhanger, with Melanie and her group of survivors under attack, though this time they are in a slightly better position.

My immediate thoughts upon finishing this book were, that this was a really great start to a potentially brilliant series.

To sum up I am looking forward to more of the characters, more of this world and definitely eagerly awaiting more of the series!

I've often said that I don't think enough movies or books set their stories in the midst of a power outage. I'm not sure why but that theme always intrigues me, so I was really excited to read Emerging Chaos by Grace Hamilton. While the summer fades into the cooler fall weather, I read a book about a city being sent into total chaos and darkness.

It all starts out normal, of course, just like any other story. Melanie and Lizzie are cleaning up after a work party under the watchful presence of their horrid boss. When they are just about to get ready to go home, the city is engulfed in total darkness. Their cell phones don't work, and everyone else around them is totally confused. Immediately, Melanie feels a sense of urgency that makes her desperately want to get home. Except their boss wants them to bring the remaining supplies back to the supply closet before they go. So, the two ladies reluctantly agree, only to end up in the wrong supply closet. The closet they run into is packed with prepper supplies, including food, medicine, and everything else someone may need.

Meanwhile, Melanie's husband Mark is teaching when he gets notice from his fellow science teachers that it's a CME event - Coronal Mass Ejection - that has caused a total collapse of the electrical event. He quickly grabs his daughter out of class to take her home and gets in touch with his wife to warn her of the catastrophic event.

Back at work, Melanie and Lizzie get talked into helping their boss find his teenage son who is gone from the office. Their boss promises to share some of his supplies with them if they can only help. On the road, while looking for the kid, Melanie and Lizzie realize something is seriously wrong with their boss, and need to get away from him. Desperately, they want to find their families and figure out what exactly is going on.

This book proved to be an exciting read and satisfied my desire to read about chaos in the midst of a major power outage. I've heard of the concept of an EMP disaster, so this wasn't a foreign idea to me. You get plenty of action in this book, and it was easy to read in just a few days. I would have liked to read more about Melanie's background because that was an integral part of how she helped her family and friend get out of some tight spots.

Overall, if you are looking for a disaster-themed book and want some action-packed plot twists, you'll want to pick this one up. The coolest part is this is one

I was graciously provided this book as an ARC reader. My first impressions are: It was a very fast and entertaining read. It paints a world without many good people in it and encompassed only a very short period in time.

I would have preffered more detail in the science of the CME, the location of the story, and a bit more character development. I didn’t feel like I had enough information about the characters to really care about them. I wanted to emotionally connect but simply couldn’t. For instance, one of the main characters performs surgery on another late in the book, but there’s little or no information previous to that scene which would explain how he came about his medical knowledge and skills. Learning more about this character's history would have provided a more robust, likable character for me.

The pace was excellent. It kept me wanting to get to the next page and chapter. Fast paced and enough action to satisfy my sweet tooth for action but, again, even the action scenes were a little soft on the details. More description of the complete and utter chaos would have helped me be more ‘in it’.

I found myself waiting for the backstory of why the main character had a dark side to her. There were little tidbits of info spread throughout the book but not enough to satisfy me or to know enough to really connect with her. Being heavy on the main plot and lacking in sub plots really made this story single tracked and simple.

Overall it was a very enjoyable and fast read which could have been more detailed while still allowing the reader to invoke their imagination. I would recommend the eReader version but would hesitate purchasing the paperback if offered. I can't wait to see what happens next!

A Coronal Mass Ejection from the sun causes the world's entire power grid to collapse. Stuck at work with her creepy boss, Melanie Pearson must find a way to get home to her husband, Mark and daughter, Shona. Melanie and her co-worker Lizzie are promised supplies and aide if they help their boss, Derrick, find his teenage son, Nathan.

This was an entertaining story of survival in a post-apocalyptic setting. I always enjoy stories about the end of modern society as we know it. There were a few things that seemed a little convenient for the book, such as MC Melanie's wide variety of skills, such as picking locks. Their boss also has a whole closet of survival supplies and guns at work. Boss Derrick turns out to be not just creepy, but crazy. He has gathered a small army and is planning on taking over a factory as their headquarters. He is power hungry and has no problem using violence to get whatever he wants. He forces Melanie and Lizzie to stay with them and they plan their escape.

All in all, if you enjoy stories like this, you'll enjoy this one too. The plot kept moving and the action never seemed to end. One problem was thrown at them right after another and it seemed like the characters would never be safe. The book left off on a cliffhanger and there are two more books in the series following these characters. It was a good, solid book overall, with decent description, dialogue and pacing.

I received an ARC to read & review from Grace Hamilton. Thank you! Following is my honest opinion. Three and a half stars rounded to 4.

Synopsis
Emerging Chaos tells the story of the chaos that takes over when all electronics go haywire, then quit for the long run.

A family plus a few friends work together to overcome the evil that prevails immediately after the power goes kaput. The story is one of survival filled with murder leading you to wonder if the good people are really good.

My Thoughts
I typically like post-apocalyptic stories. Emerging Chaos gave a startling glimpse of what people will do to protect their own, & it isn’t a pretty picture.

One thing I didn’t like was the entire book only captured one day, the day the power quit. In the very end, it did go a few days beyond that, but that wasn’t a substantial part of the story. I feel like it was pretty long for one day. I sure hope the world wouldn’t go crazy this fast!

If you get a thrill from fast-paced post-apocalyptic action, this is a book for you. Read more reviews at latishaslowkeylife.com.

Melanie Pearson and Lizzy Turner have worked at Beaton Food Factory for many years. They are the type of best friends that are more family than just friends. That's going to come in handy when a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) hits the earth in December right after the company party. Turns out their boss Derrick Platt is a Prepper with a Plan for much more than just surviving and thriving. Dealing with their own disbelief in just how quickly things go crazy and getting their families safe in spite of it all proves to be a challenge in ingenuity, mettle and flexibility. Its a wild ride full of excitement, sadness and purpose well worth the read with some twists you won't see coming!! No foul language or sexual content to muddy the waters. Fantastic...can't wait for the next book

I have read many of Grace Hamilton's books and I have liked all of them. I was especially interested in this series because it was set around Knoxville, TN. I grew up around Knoxville and lived there for several years so I was interested to see how my old stomping ground would do in a crisis. This is one of those books that comes to life quickly and you begin to imagine what you would do in each situation. This group goes from one big disaster to several other disasters and there is never a time you want to stop reading. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I've read a lot of books written by Grace Hamilton; she is one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of her books.

This is first book in the EMP Disaster Series. She has written another great book. The story is about Melanie & Lizzy trying to reunite with Melanie’s husband and daughter after the EMP shuts down the power worldwide but to secure a spot for her family in the fortress she agrees to help her boss find his son first leaving her husband Mark to protect their daughter and try to get them to the fortress.

Melanie and her band of misfits have occupied the factory, but now they have to hold it. New members show up. They have needed skills, but can they be trusted. Mark’s bullet wound becomes infected. He needs a hospital or at the very least, better antibiotics. Melanie and her fighters have to use their resourcefulness to battle the interlopers.

Emerging Chaos is book one in the EMP Disaster series and tells us about the first day of the catastrophe. Not only do we learn what takes place after the massive EMP event we also learn how everyone reacts and what they will do to keep their loved ones safe. The writing is descriptive, the characters are believable and this story held my attention from start to finish. This is a great start to the new series and I can't wait to read book two to find out what happens next. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

This is the first in a new post-apocalyptic series and it starts of fast and furious. An atmospheric EMP has struck earth and the world devols into chaos. Everyone shifts into survival mode at it's most primitive and primal level as the world begins to become a race for survival of the fittest... The two primary characters have been friends since childhood and have worked in a factory for years. Now they must learn to navigate a quickly evolving new reality.. What emerges is a powerful story of survival and the heart of humanities ability to adapt. I highly recommend this book!

End of the world and after the disaster books hold a certain fascination to me. Life as we know it can change in an instant as it does for the characters in Grace Hamilton's series. I have read alot of her books and they are all fresh, no retelling the same story over and over. The fact that she can write so many unique versions of a catastrophe means I am well educated on how to get from point a to point b before, during and after an event.

Emerging Chaos is the first book in her newest series. It's another winner by this expert on how to keep me coming back for the next book.

A CME story with a different touch. There’s the disruption, the panic and the time for bad people to take charge. It starts with the two women and just expands from there. Every move they make is overshadowed by violence and they’re quick to fight back. To survive. It’s an exciting read with background information coming gradually. And it’s very easy to cheer on the good guys. I love the characters, there’s a great diversity and dimension.

Started out a little slow, but the pace picked up quickly. Melanie is a little tough, I wish she was a little more likeable, but she's trying to get the job done, and the situation keeps getting worse. She aims her gun and misses, which makes her human, instead of killing everything in sight. characters are not explained enough, which leaves the reader disconnected. The story is good, though and very exciting.

Emerging Chaos Get Hamilton

An atmospheric EMP has struck. Everything is shut down. No electricity, no power other then gasoline generators. Chaos has erupted. Panic, survival at it's most primitive level. The two primary characters, life long friends have worked in a factory for years. It turns out their boss is a prepper. But his reasoning, motives are entirely self serving. What ensues is a powerful story of survival. An excellent read!!

This was my first by this author and narrator and I really enjoyed it. This was a different take on the EMP disaster genre and I liked the way it was normal people. It really did work. The narration also suited the story and I would look out for more by both of them.

The ending was just perfect setting it up so well.

I was given a free copy of the audible book but this did not impact my review.

What to do?

When a CME shuts everything down, Melanie and Lizzie will face a whole new world. Their boss is a prepper with a plan but there is still Melanie’s husband and daughter to find and save. Fast paced read with twists and turns. Hidden agendas and secret motives keep the story moving. Characters that are more family than friends and a frightening future.

Unusual story line

This was not my favorite Hamilton EMP novel. The premise and story line were interesting and out of the usual. But the story progression was too fast to make me believe it. Slow down the action. Fewer strange and psychotic characters. All this story except the last couple of pages happened in 4-6 hours? No way.

A good first part in this new EMP adventure by Grace Hamilton. Fast action from the start, a mad series of events that seem to spiral out of control in a very short time frame! If that sounds good, this is for you!

This book was captivating. So much action/adventure/drama packed into it and most of it happens in one day as things escalate. I hit the end of this book and kept tapping my iPad for more. I was not ready for it to end and am eagerly awaiting the second book.

More likely

Melanie and Lizzy are relatable characters who stumble and fall along the way to retrieve and protect their family. It's a nice change to have someone who isn't tactically trained to follow along with as they make mistakes more akin to the average person.

Meh! Better than I could write but mostly predictable. Revolvers with infinite bullets. Old men that lose their wife and are unaffected. Gas pumps that work while electricity is off. One impossibly long day. Mostly just too many lucky, just in the nick of time , coincidences.

Disappointed

Melanie is insipid, and does some incredibly stupid things for a married woman, mother of a 15 year old. Lizzie is equally insipid and wishy-washy. Hamilton's books are generally much better, but I'm ending at this one. The end.
