Hillendale #5

Enchanted Memories

Rate this book
After a near-death experience when locating a strangling victim, psychic police consultant Madeleine Stephens is content to keep to herself and redecorate her new house. The community of Hillendale, Wisconsin has been quiet, but the spring weather brings out the neighbors, who want to learn more about her and her knack for finding things that are lost.

When Deputy Kyle Jakes and his K-9 approach her to help find a missing person, Madeleine is hesitant—particularly if the woman might have had a fatal accident—not to mention she wiped Kyle's memory of their first encounter before he could reject her. But finding missing persons is what she does—her gift—and the possibility the current missing woman is in danger is low. Needing to ease back into her skills, she accepts the case, but avoids Kyle to prevent shaking loose the memory of their interlude.

After Madeleine’s initial consult, the missing woman is found, but goes missing a second time. Madeleine teams up with Kyle, whose repressed memory isn’t buried as deeply as she’d hoped. They struggle with trust issues while they pursue leads, but Kyle isn’t the only one who recovers a hidden memory. When reviewing the vision that hospitalized her, Madeleine inadvertently reveals herself to the strangler. She must trust Kyle to keep her safe, while keeping him safe at the same time.

I wasn’t sure how The Hillendale Series books could get any better than they already were, but they just did! I absolutely loved Enchanted Memories. Madeleine Stephens, a psychic is a feisty, sarcastic person who is outspoken in every way. She is nice, but wary of most people and not sure how to fit in, or that she even wants to in Hillendale. She’s a loner, had a rough life and experienced sexual abuse at a young age. When her parents didn’t believe her story of abuse, her Aunt saved her and helped her channel her psychic abilities to do good and Do No Harm. She meets Kyle and Zeus, Kyle’s K-9 German Shepherd Partner. Madeleine is quite afraid of Zeus and Zeus senses something off about her. Kyle has a memory of Madeleine that he can’t put his finger on, yet it keeps surfacing in his dreams etc. He wonders if somehow she hypnotized him. Madeleine and Kyle become involved in several missing person cases and the outcome will excite and shock you! And, of course, that’s only the half of it. I can’t say enough great things about the Hillendale Series and Karla Brandenburg, the Award Winning Author! Please, Please, if you haven’t started this series, or you’ve read only a few of the books, READ THEM ALL! They are so well written ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

In the latest of Brandenburg’s Hillendale paranormal series, psychic Madeline Stephens is making a new start in the home that formerly belonged to Brynn Taylor. Townspeople and neighbor Kyle Jakes are very curious about her and especially want to know if she’ll provide the same kind of magical help that Brynn used to do. Madeline is quick to point out that she is not Brynn.
When a hair stylist goes missing, local cops learn that Madeline had assisted other police departments with missing persons work in the past and ask for her help. She’s reluctant to get involved due to a huge scare in a previous case.
As Madeline finds her way in Hillendale, various encounters test her confidence, courage, and heart. She’s faced severe disappointment in the past and is leery of putting herself out there and being so vulnerable again.
Her challenge is to get her act together and catch a two-time killer before he kills the one she loves.
An engrossing read, every bit as good the second time I read it!

I received a copy of Enchanted Memories as a Goodreads Giveaways winner. This was the first book that I've read in the series as well as by the author Karla Brandenburg. Over all I found this story to be quite entertaining and would give it 3.5 stars but can't quite round up to 4.

What I liked about this book was the strong female lead. The author did a good job filling in her background however I'm unsure if this is to catch the reader up from previous books of the series or just character building in general. To me it reads as a catch up from previous stories. I also like the mystery/ crimes that are being solved, A good amount of suspense and wonder are given to keep the story flowing.

The things I didn't like as much was the connection between our MC and her detective neighbor/ love interest. I don't know if it's because I didn't read the previous books but I feel a lot of this relationship is presumed instead of presented. Other than the MC straight out stating she chose this ...the feelings just weren't felt from my end. Another thing that bugged me was how she dressed provocatively because she was a rape survivor. Daring men to look at her body in the wrong way so she could put them in their place. Our MC is a loaner yet wants to draw attention to herself. These aspects contradict one another.

Overall this was an easy and engaging read. I like how the aspects of the supernatural were presented. I would recommend this book and think I will definitely go back and read some of the previous books in this series.
