I'd love to tell you how I got stuck in a house in the middle of Nowhereville, Illinois. Or how many years I've spent with no memory of the person I used to be. But I can't. Those details are locked down tight inside the chaos of my mind, and I don't have the key.
The only thing I do know - I'm dead. Major bummer, right?
I spend my days doing what I do best - scaring off anyone who steps foot inside my house. Of course, ghost girls can't own houses, but that's beside the point. A girl's got a rep to maintain, and after a close call a while back, I've had to step up my game. This ghost girl doesn't want to be exorcised anytime soon.
Just when my unlife is getting increasingly dull, a team of hot paranormal researchers shows up to investigate the cause of all the unusual activity. Now I don't know whether I should bust out my normal bag of tricks or take a chance on making my presence known in other, potentially naughty, ways. Don't judge. Ghost girls have needs too, you know, and mine have gone unmet for way too long.
This is essentially just a bad ripoff of Four Psychos.
The similarities are present and obvious, especially at the beginning. Worse, they're bad similarities - this is nowhere near as good as 4P. Don't just take my word on it, though. Here are some of the plot points that match up:
➽ Heroine in this book (Fate) is a ghost who has lived in a house for a while, with nobody able to see her. Heroine in 4P (Paca) is a ghost who has lived in a house for a while, with nobody able to see her. The only difference is that Paca has lived in a house with her guys, while Fate was in an empty house until the guys moved in.
➽ Both Paca and Fate use the phrase 'ghost girl' a lot and talk a lot about ghost girl problems - namely, how horny they are.
➽ Fate in this book starts being able to 'level up' her powers gradually after meeting the guys. Paca in 4p starts being able to 'level up' her powers gradually after meeting the guys.
➽ The guys in 4P know they're immortal but have no memory of their pasts, they just appeared one day. Ditto for the guys in this book.
➽ Fate has no memory of her life before being a ghost girl. Neither does Paca in 4P.
➽ Paca had a past with her guys, she just didn't know it yet. Fate has a past with her guys, it also takes them a while to work it out.
➽ The harem numbers are different; Paca has 4 while Fate has 5. Both, however, have the requisite rude guy who doesn't trust the heroine. I realise this is a staple of RH and not characteristic of a particular book, but with all the other similarities, Cole's resemblance to Jude was really grating on me.
Those are all the similarities that immediately advertised themselves to me; I'm sure there are more. The thing is, I could have tolerated all that if the book itself had been good. I downloaded it in the first place BECAUSE the plot was so reminiscent of 4P (though admittedly I wasn't expecting this level of likeness). But the book is just bad. A roundup of issues:
❌ The prose is a little overwrought. It doesn't flow like natural prose should.
❌ Insta-love. Enough said.
❌ Poor characterisation on the part of the heroes, making all 5 of them pretty much indistinguishable from each other.
❌ Poor characterisation on the part of Fate. She makes decisions and then drops them without telling the reader, undermining her entire thought process.
I would not say I disliked this book or that it's bad in general. The real problem is that its first half is simply way too similar to Four Psychos and wasn't necessarily as good.
It usually doesn't bother me when books are similar to others but as Four Psychos was freaking fantastic, A Fate Unknown seemed somewhat bland next to it.
Not a bad read, but you might enjoy it better if you haven't read its predecessor just yet.
I'm going to give Kelly a compliment that I don't hand out very often- A Fate Unknown is a great case of a debut novel that doesn't entirely read like one.
It's definitely easily recognized as the first in a series- we've got the character introductions, some world background, a healthy dose of mystery, and the fun flirtatiousness of romance not yet realized- but the plotting and romance arcs are well-paced, and each of the chapters is used to its maximum benefit for the story.
Fate, our FMC, and Cole, Knox, Mack, Thad, and Levi, our MMCs, all have something in common: there are holes in their memories that hide the truth of who and what they are.
When we meet them, Fate is in a bit of an incorporeal state. #GhostGirlProblems
But being a bit transparent doesn't stop her sass or wit or ability to appreciate all the beautiful men that find their way into the house that she's been haunting. Each of the MMCs is also special in their own way, wielding some kind of power that helps them in their Ghost Hunting/Cleansing business as well as holding their little makeshift family together.
As we dig into A Fate Unknown, we've got a couple things to figure out. 1. Who Fate and the guys really are ✓ 2. Why they have powers ✓ 3. Why is there an inexplicable pull between them? ✓
Kelly does a great job of giving us some answers on all of these fronts while still leaving us with a nice dose of mystery to hook us into book two! Very very very slight warning: there's a tiny cliffhanger at the end in the sense that Fate learns/remembers something important. While it definitely amps up the drama and intrigue, it's by far a livable cliffhanger, and we don't have anyone on the edge of death of anything like that, so I'm totally not mad at Kelly for it.
Overall, A Fate Unknown brings the laugh, some great one-liners, a few awwww-worthy declarations, and some steam. It's true to its medium-burn classification because we do get some full-on action, but Fate's going to need some time to get that point with all of her men. Looking forward to what comes next :)
Let’s start with this- I’m having a pretty hard time believing that this is the authors first book. It was that good.
Now, after saying that I want to be clear that I don’t usually make assumptions based on how many books an author has published- I’ve read both great and horrible debut books and some awful books from extremely experienced authors. However, if i’m honest, there’s always a bit of anxiety that comes with finding a new author, whether they’re just new to me or new to publishing. Due to this and the fact that I’ve been in a book slump for the last few days, I definitely enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected too.
I loved the plot line and characters in this book. Especially the FMC. Quirky & sassy ghost girl? Yes please. I was literally just thinking the other day that I wanted to read another book where the FMC had amnesia over a past life. Parts of this book reminded me a lot of Restless Spirit by Briana Micheals (another great one!!) but it was still different enough and most parts of the story were completely unique. But I want to be clear that I in no way think that the author copied Mrs. B or anything, just enjoyed the similarities.
Fate was a great FMC and I really enjoyed her interactions with the guys and I loved loved loved Knox!!
I will definitely be continuing the series & can’t wait to see what happens next. Well done, Sinclair Kelly! Congrats on releasing your first book and happy release day!
Get ready to dive in with our paranormal investigators as they try to unravel the mystery behind the hauntings in the victorian house currently occupied by our resident feisty spirit. Fate's got more power in her pinky than these boys have seen before though, so they're about to have some serious #ghostgirl problems. Filled with sass and humor and vulnerability and connection, this is a series I can't wait to get more of. Each of the men brings something different to the group, and I can’t wait to see Fate and her guys in book 2!
When I came across this book, I immediately thought about Kristy Cunnings' series which also features a sassy ghost. There are definite some more parallels. I appreciated the story but it was not distinctive enough. The instant connection thr FMC had with her guys was also a shame: I hoped they needed some more time to develop strong feelings.
A Fate Unknown is the debut book by author Sinclair Kelly and honestly, at no point did it feel like I was reading a debut book! The characters were all fully realised and funny and charming and above all else, realistic! Fate, the heroine, is relatable too! (Well, except for the whole ghost girl thing).
As a rule, I don't usually pick up books about ghosts however the fact that this was a Reverse Harem drew me in. I'm so glad I listened to my gut. I actually 'eeked' out loud at one point!
This story is told in multiple perspective by Fate and her five men: leader Cole, nerd Macklin, empath Knox, and twins Thad and Levi. I have to say, I have a soft spot for Mack for sure. They've all been trapped for some time and have no memories of how they came to be there.
This is a slow burn RH and sets itself up perfectly at the end for book two. I believe people who enjoy PNR RH will love this book too!
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
It's hard to believe that this is a debut book because Sinclair is absolutely amazing. Fate is hilarious and her observations will leave you laughing and turning the pages because you need to know more about her and her take on #ghostlife #ghostgirl. From the very first page I was hooked and I wanted to know more. I was laughing out loud. This book not only has her side of things, but also from the guys. I can't wait to read more from this talented author.
This was a quick read. Yes, it resembles Four Psychos a lot, but it is still readable. A bit of insta-love/insta-connection, which makes the relationships just blah, but entertaining enough all around. I will read the second book.
This was such a breath of fresh air from Sinclair Kelly. I laughed, like literally laughed out loud, I cringed and covered my face at the awkward bits, and I could not put it down. From the time I picked it up, I could not set it down. Fate is such a strong FMC and has so much depth. I love how relatable she is, and how realistic her emotions feel. She begins enjoying herself, with some angst below the surface, but is soon introduced to five very attractive and very interesting men. Sinlcair captures such very different personalities so effortlessly and builds the relationships between the group while adding in backstory bread crumbs. Knox is the first MMC we meet, and his introduction gives us insight into the history of the group. Shortly after this, we are introduced to Cole, Macklin, Thad, and Levi.
Fate struggles with her feelings as she's very much undead and these gorgeous paranormal ghost hunters are very much alive. #GhostGirlProblems. This book draws you in and just when you're getting comfy, a sharp turn happens.
This book has absolutely everything I could have asked for: drama, romance, villains, plot twists, and much to my chagrin a cliff hanger at the end. I will be patiently and impatiently waiting for the next in this series to be released.
I enjoyed this! I think some of the reviews saying this is a rip off of Four Psychos is unfair. While there are very base similarities, I didn’t find it a rip off.
The writing was good and I liked the prologue. I had a lot of questions for most of the book. I really liked Fate and for the most part the guys. It flowed really well.
I could’ve done without the realtor scene. I found it unnecessary and just another way to make Fate jealous, which was annoying. The implication that the guys gave her the time of day previously was also annoying.
For me personally, my main issue is that since she’s been a ghost she’s been lonely and celibate for the last ten years for her, but it’s actually been 100. Meanwhile, the guys have no memories of the last 50 years they’ve been “alive” and have gotten to screw around with anyone and everyone. I’m just kind of over plots like this so it took my enjoyability down. Like give her a guy ghost friend, idk. Make the guys jealous for a change.
The guy i liked the most was Macklin, who has been celibate this whole time, but of course he isn’t the first guy she’s with once she has her physical form back. To me he was the most deserving of her, and I would’ve preferred it instead of her seemingly going in “order.”
The ending is definitely intriguing and not really what i expected. I’ll continue to book 2.
Whereas I did like this one, it would've been nice if it was a bit slower and more ghost girl haunting. It was light and fun but then went the route of grand destiny etc. The guys powers are cool and I felt sorry for Knox. Favorite part was the little facts at the beginning of each chapter. Did not like Mandy, she was creepy and clingy.

Sinclair Kelly not only managed to created a well plotted storyline, but was funny and emotionally gripping at the same time. She wove together six characters that each fit a role within their group. The emotional rock, the s*xy nerd, the trouble maker twin, the mellow peacemaker twin, the alpha *sshole and the female who was the center of them all and who could hold her own against any of them.
Sinclair Kelly aims to answer a few....and more...questions throughout her book. Why is Fate in the house she found herself in? How did she come to he a ghost? Who are these five men who she feels so drawn to? The answers to these questions take you on twists and turns tha you won't see coming and by the end of the book you will be begging for more. Run, don't walk....or well 1-click this book on whatever platform you choose to preorder it now!!!!!! Seriously... .GET. THE. BOOK.
I will say on, a personal note, that I read this as an ARC reader and I went and preordered the book to support Sinclair Kelly as an author.....I liked the book that much. I was reading for editing suggestions and got so lost in the book I forgot to pay attention looking for errors. So I went back and read it a second time. Imagine my shock when I found few ro almost none! I have read books that went through rounds of editing Author to editor, back to author, to Beta, back to author, back to beta, back to author, back to editor, to ARC reader, back to author before publishing with still tons of editing mistakes. I don't know what Sinclair Kelly's magic formula is, but you will not find prolific mistakes in this book making it such a pleasant read!
Sinclair Kelly, girl this book is the bomb. It definitely reads as though you have written hundreds of books and not like a debut book. Lots of Lovin', Mystery , intrigue, drama, and so much more. I would read this book over and over and over again.. oh wait I did... let's read it again!
Characters : ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Plot: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Romance: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Mystery: 👻👻👻👻👻
Action: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Humor: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Every single one of these characters were so unbelievablywell developed. I connected with each of them on a real level and the chemistry between them was off the charts.
Cole, leader of the men, fierce, protective took me a bit to love but that is the nature of an alpha a-hole type personality, they reel you in slowly.
Fate was freaking amazing. I absolutely adored her personality and she was downright hilarious. #GhostGirlGoals.
The twins Levi and That were a perfect mix of me. Nice guy (Levi) keeps Mr. Grumpy McGrumpster (Thad) balanced. I loved them.
And of course, we can't leave out our resident Sexy Nerd Macklin, who is probably no definitely in my top two favorite characters of this book. He is so adorable and sweet and I just want to squeeze and love on him so much!
And last but not least of the guys is Knox. Resident empath, lover boy, sweet, and funny. God I loved this whole book so hard.
And that ending! Gah! I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
Congratulations to this author, throwing my hands in the air, bowing down and the greatness that you have written!
Having just read Four Psychos, I thought that I'd give another ghost RH a go. But honestly this was just ridiculous. Fate is a vapid woman that wears shirts with hashtags on them, is jealous when a woman is near men that she'd just met, and her first proper interaction with the men she instantly gives one of them a handjob. Wait, what? This type of characterisation is made worse when it's revealed that there'll all actually hundreds of years old and they're mean to run the designation area of the underworld. She's ancient yet talks like a stereotypical teenager who's just got access to the internet. All of the men blur together, but even then you have the cliches of one being an arsehole and one being nerdy and shy. Honestly, there was nothing special about this entire book. They're trying to figure out their connection and how to save Fate, but you want to know how they ended up figuring it out? She touched a tree. That's it, her hand stuck to a tree, it exploded and she become powerful again. Why? Just why? Would I recommend it? Nope. Even if I hadn't read Four Psychos, this still wouldn't be a good book. Will I be carrying on the series? Why- to find out that her evil sister magicked herself to look like the good sister while trying to seduce Fate's men. Yes, that's one of the things that instigated Fate becoming a ghost and the group splitting.
Really fast throw the reader in to sink or swim plot. Lots of insta.. everything.. Slow revealing world build and history due to lost memories.... and yet the Word Vomit Heroine saves the day for me, yet again. I honestly have no real clue what the main plot of this story is turning into but I do love me a mouthy, sassy, bad A FMC.
All the guys are different so points for that, however, I still feel like we have read about these guys all before. Maybe as the story progresses we will get more "in depth" with them who knows. We have an ultimate betrayer somewhere and a lot of unanswered questions right now and we are kind of left high and dry at the end.
All our characters start out with no memory... drawn to each other by some unseen force. Searching for.. something. Until they stumble across a not so haunted, haunted house with a sentient ghost that isn't really all that ghost like.. Yep sounds familiar so far. I feel like the story does take a unique turn however as we get more and more information about each of our characters and their true purpose but we still don't have enough information yet. So its all up in the air for now.
I'm interested enough in the plot to continue the series for sure but I'm also not in a huge hurry. *Shrugs*
I totally get everyone pointing to Four Psychos - there are definite similarities. But I think ... as someone who enjoys UF and fantasy, there are just so many similarities across books in the genre that as long as I enjoy the story and the author makes it their own, I don't generally let it bother me. I mean, I can't tell you how many UF stories I've read that are derivative of Kate Daniels.
Has the author made it her own? Well, so far I think so ... but it's hard to say until the whole plot unwinds and we can look at all the details. I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt at this point.
Ugh, I was really excited to read another “Ghost Girl” RH but this is a carbon copy of Four Psychos by Kristy Cunning/CM Owens ie: She becomes visible when asleep next them, she can manifest her clothing and pick whatever she wants, they’re connected and drawn together, she calls herself a “ghost girl”, she’s super crazy possessive, the guys are all “brothers” and have traveled and been together for last 5 centuries but haven’t felt complete until now, she’s hyper-sexual just like Paca was but at least it was understood in Pacas case as she lived with the guys for years when the book started. This chick goes from ‘who are these dudes to let me give him a ghostly hand job’. This whole thing was major cringe from the plagiarism to the stereotyped characters. All this in the first 15%. I do think the author has a good writing style though so hopefully she’ll try again with something that isn’t so obviously “influenced” by another authors work.
Can I just say that when going in to this book I was looking for something to hold my attention for more than 3 chapters. I have been in the biggest slump of the year and I am not down for it.
This book was such a pleasant surprise. I loved every moment of this book. All of the guys (Knox, Cole, Thad, Levi, and Macklin) were everything I didn't know I needed.
If you are looking for a book with a sassy ghost that gives her 5 guys a run for their money then this is the book for you.
Honestly why is it so hard to find words for books that just are amazing??
Also the fact that this was a debut book for this author, I am shook.
The one thing I would change is..... THE RELEASE DATE OF THE SECOND BOOK..... WHY DO I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL 2021 FOR THE NEXT ONE???????????
Overall anyone who knows what is good for them, needs to pick up this book.
Good job on your debut novel. Fate is just hanging around the house she's stuck in. Living her best ghost life, though alittle boring....but the haunting helps. Five guys march into her world and make her feel things no ghost girl should feel.
Fate is pretty funny with her #ghostgirlproblems. Having no memory of how you came to be can make finding out the truth hard for anyone. Throughout the book we get to see fate and the guys each develop their relationships on different levels. Each of the guys bring out a different side to her...each she's going to need as they continue.
When life gets turned upside down and you lose your memory, it's hard to adjust. Fate has no idea what happened to her or how she became a ghost, but she's made her peace with it and 'lives her life' the way she wants, within her limitations, of course. When a group of hot men move into her house and start changing her world, answering questions and making her power grow, things get really interesting. I loved this book so much! It was so different than anything I've read before. The twist this put on the mythology you normally hear was so unique for me and the added RH benefit is hilarious and intriguing. I'm eager for more and can't wait for A Twist of Fate!!
This is a first time read of this author for me. Normally Vampires are more more thing. But the way this author tells this story of a ghost girl is intriguing!
Fate has no idea how she became a ghost. Just bits and pieces of her memory. Cole, Knox, Thad, Levi, and Macklin don’t know why they were all drawn together. But know that they’re meant to be brothers. Then feeling a pull to a house that has claimed to be haunted. They soon find that she is the reason why! Once together again, they all begin to remember..
Just when I thought I'd lost my reading mojo, I read this and it makes me belly laugh. It makes me realise why I love reading so much. It made me realise how obsessed I am with pnr romance.
I loved this, the female MC, the male MCs...they are all so brilliant and it is a more-ish plot, constant twists and turns to intensify the story. New memories unlocking as the story unfolds. I couldn't get enough!!!!
I thought this book was going to be a horror--damn was I wrong. Lol, guess it will teach me to read the book blurb before just starting to read a book. The story was pretty interesting though, and Fate is a very amusing character. As usual in these types of books, my favorite guy was Cole, the asshole. I think I'll continue this series, the plot has just enough mystery in it to capture my attention.
3.5 stars of entertainment and, honestly, because somehow it helped lull my overactive brain to sleep while also ironically not being boring. I loved that! It had an interesting group of guys and a not-too-annoying heroine. I enjoyed it (in small increments at bedtime) and I still remember almost everything about it. Rare is the book that can both keep my attention and relax me at the same time.
This is the debut book by Sinclair Kelly. I really loved this book and I can not wait for book 2! I am not a huge fan of ghost books. I generally don’t tend to read them, but I was given this book an an arc for an honest review. I am so glad I did, I literally died laughing at some points in this book . The story is told by Fate and her Harem. Each POV . There’s Cole ( the moody leader), Knox who’s an empath ( I love Knox), the twins Levi and Thad , and the sexy nerd Macklin. They all like wake up one day all over the country and they have no memories on how they got there and they seek out to find each other. This was the perfect start to a great series! I think Author Sinclair Kelly has made me like ghost books just a little bit .. thank you!
Fate is a ghost who has been stuck to the same house for 10 years. When a group of 5 ghost hunters buys the house, they realise that their encounter was more than a coincidence. There is something linking them, but they need to find out both. Too bad than none of them remembers their pasts. And how is it possible that the more time Fate spends with the guys, the more "physical" she becomes?
I thought this was quite a cute and original story. I love Knox, while Cole is at the bottom of the list.
