If you’re new to learning about inflammation, this will be a great book to read, with a few caveats. Based on the title, I expected lots of recipes and/or that the book would primarily be about eating, but the vast majority of the book is about inflammation, the immune system, and overall immune stressors—including lots more than foods. There are only a few recipes for each meal time, and not really anything concrete in the way of suggestions for meals beyond that. As someone who's learned a lot about inflammation and immunity already, and who's looking for meal ideas and recipes, there wasn’t much here for me.

If you’re just starting out trying to manage inflammation, you will find some good information on lifestyle modifications, and the author's tone is very encouraging and supportive. You won’t feel guilty for doing it wrong or not wanting to quit all the things you love cold-turkey. She’s a health coach, and based on this book, I bet she’s good at helping people get healthier.

I appreciated the references to peer-reviewed studies and medical journals in the first several chapters, which set my expectations for the rest of the book, however, there are some spurious concepts referenced afterwards that do not have any good studies to support them, despite their popularity.

HeartMath is a big one. It’s a great thing to promote relaxation techniques, which do have obvious positive health effects supported by peer-reviewed studies. But the idea that someone can manipulate DNA that isn’t even theirs, that's in a vial, in another building, just by thinking about it with the right mindset? Ok, that is really far-fetched to say the least, and you would want multiple studies showing the same results in order to believe it. But this concept is touted as having been "proven" after one single, small "study" performed by the main advisor to the heartmath company, and one of the main subjects was a founder of the company (talk about conflict of interest). To date, no other scientists have replicated this result. And that's not the only spurious thing about the heartmath business. This book would have been more credible if this concept had been left out, or at least explained in terms of its limitations.

Various other mistakes undermine credibility, too, such as the statement that most canned food is canned in aluminum (not true in the US, where I am and where the author lives, where foods are canned in steel and drinks are canned in aluminum). There are enough others like this that just feel a bit sloppy—maybe an editor should have caught them? So readers need to be aware that not everything can be taken at face value.

But overall, it was easy to read, the information is well organized, and the tone is very encouraging and accessible.

Any book that encourages positive personal change is probably net-good, and I'd give this a 3rd star if Berghoff didn't market herself as a "health consultant to the stars", which when I saw it at the top her goodreads blurb just confirmed my expectations, and disappointment in the usefulness of this book.

On credentials, Maggie is a nurse practitioner (NP) with a fancy sounding certificate, and this hasn't empowered her to read through the health literature any better than me, or even better than the average reader.

The author is empowering rich middle-aged women to feel better about whatever changes they choose to make, even minimal ones that cost a lot but have minimal health impact. The "inflamation types" questionnaire is pseudoscience at best, and meaningless as designed, since inflammation is dynamic and just has countless contributing factors, personal triggers and is a shifting gradient not a categorical concept. The toxic burden inventory isn't worth a serious review.. just drink good water and don't obsess about the idea of bodily internal cleanliness or purity.

Instead read "Fiber Fueled" and follow @theguthealthmd for much more concise, science based, actionable and inexpensive health advice.

Listened to the audio book which was read by the author. Lots of information within this book, much of which I had previously known as I had removed gluten and dairy many years ago. The environmental and household toxin side was interesting but I cannot see how the average person could eliminate many of these without huge expenses incurred. Will I take some additional knowledge from this book. Yes! Are all the recommendations completely realistic and doable…for me probably not. At least I am now a bit more aware of some other root causes. Worthwhile listen.

Not what I expected but the recipes at the back were quite good. It’s more of a quick look at the many types of inflammatory diseases and I know there are many. It took a while for my diagnosis but I had a very good and thorough rheumatologist who put me into hospital for a week to do many many tests.

Sure, a lot of this information is really general/common sense. However, it was written in a way that was both entertaining to read as well as inspiring. Also, I did learn a few new things about my health that I feel are valuable. All in all a great book that I would definitely recommend and may reference again in the future.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced electronic copy of this book. This book discusses different types of inflammation, their possible causes, triggers, and suggestions on lifestyle changes, foods, and detox for better health and well-being. I believe that this book is best used under the guidance of the medical and/or integrative professional. I enjoyed the recipe section and definitely gained some ideas and recipes I would like to try.

This was a fun read and had some valuable insight. I can't rate it highly because of some of the claims the author made that are more fads and not science based. For example, the amount of times she uses the word detox, implying that things like lemon water detox the system. The body does this through its natural digestive processes. There was a little too much trendy diet info for me.

It is somewhat helpful, and I'm currently undertaking a lot of her tips, but it veers a tad into "kooky" territory (like EMFs and such!). My main complaint is the title indicates the book will focus on diet but that's only a small part of it. It's also not organized the best and suffers from some lax editing. Re-title the book and it would a bit better.

This book is fantastic! Even though it’s packed with lots of information, it’s easy to understand. The writer gives short quizzes to help you see where your inflammation may be coming from and then tells you what page to go to for the foods/exercises. You can also tell that she has experienced pain and other life changing health issues. Also, she doesn’t act like it’s a magic cure. I’m definitely going to purchase this book so I can reference it when i experience brain fog. Excellent book and highly recommend!

This book is your one-stop shop for understanding where inflammation in your body can be coming from, and the impact that has on your body. Knowing what’s going on in your body, and how that might be contributing to symptoms is key to understanding what needs to change, and Maggie explains this all in an easy-to-understand way. She goes beyond that by helping you to figure out how and what to change in your diet and lifestyle to start feeling better. The quizzes are a great way to personalize the wisdom in this book, along with recipe ideas to start feeling your best. Highly recommend!

I was intrigued by the “inflammation type” so picked it up at the library. The books is pretty basic, and I skimmed the second half—once I read through all the different types of inflammation. It’s a decent introduction to inflammation, but you do want to check her sources before believing everything in here. I have notes on a couple of things to try, but it’s nothing I haven’t read before somewhere online.

This book contains good basic information written in a positive, easy to read style. Like any book of this type, it gets a bit repetitive if the reader is already familiar with the subject. I thought the swaps and recipes were good though the information wasn’t anything new - just well organized and approachable. I recommend this book as an introduction to inflammation.

Useful guidelines about reducing inflammation in the body. Very few actual recipes. Some of the adjustments seem rather complicated. I would like to know more about the author’s credentials and training.

The information shared in this book is knowledge I wish everyone knew. She was able to share medical names at times but always followed it up with an explanation anyone could understand. It was eye-opening, and learning about Total Toxic Burden was helpful. Cheers to a healthier future!

Started out promising... she sort of lost me along the way.. her whole thing now is helping people on social media to build their businesses and that's just not my vibe. There were some good nuggets of info in the book.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned a lot and it was easy to understand. The questionnaires in the back of the book help to guide you on what parts of the book are more specific to you and what you want to work on. The whole book in general was very informational.

Some good reminders, but I found the book to be lacking the why for some of her suggestions. It was a basic overview for someone new to inflammation and what to eat.
