Ok so I just finish the book (finally) and have been positively dying to make this review
I will go straight to what upset me because I can no longer hold it in :
1) As I previously mentioned in my other reviews from this AU, the author kept the same events of the original Hp books and in the same order, there's no significant changes from the main plot. That's why my favorite book from this AU so far is PoA, because there was truly great modifications from the original story which carried great outline for angst and characters grows and depth. But apart from that, I feel like the plot since GoF has been rather dull and unchange while most of the characters don’t have any real ‘spark’ (Remus, Regulus and Lily aside of course) like most of what they do or say are kind of foreseeable
2) Instead of moving away more from the original main plot, the author decided to keep (as said above) everything from the Hp books, including events and plot twists, and to just make some of those scenes happened from someone else pov, which doesn't seem like a bad idea. Only some of the characters she chose to make a pov from I think are just fine as side characters, and became much less interesting to hear from once we have their perspective I'm especially talking about Cedric and Tonks : admirable and stimulating when you read about them from the MC (Harry) pov, but as soon as they get their own, the scenes get plain and unworthy to read about. The problem is, the author has said number of times in her chapter notes that Tonks and Cedric were characters she loved, but we'd have easily get it just by taking a look at the number of minutes (or hours) required to finish reading the chapters in their pov (tbh I didn't bother finishing Cedric's pov when I recall what it entailed, and I basically skip Tonks' one entirely when I noticed that it was the longest chapter from the whole fic and just a "What I do in a day" kind of chapter). And I mean, she does what she wants, it's her AU, but am simply here to write down my frustration by precising, respectfully, that it pissed me off and make me, slowly but surely, dislike the characters
3) I found myself having more and more beef with the writing style, which hold the great merit of being both too simple and too repetitive ; keeping the exact same plot but changing pov by time to time wouldn't have been much of an issue if only the writing wouldn't disappoint, but it does. While the author obviously knows how to depict complex characters personnalities traits, the display often appear way too repetitive with extra useless descriptions which have been wrote down 2 paragraphs ago ; example : the author depicted Harry being depressed, frustrated, lost and angry (righfully so), its clear she knows him and acknowledge his internal battles and struggles. But when it comes to writing it down (more precisely Harry internal fights with himself and his parents) the descriptions are quite ... dry ... and it's only an example
4) Ik most of the readers definitely won't be with me on this one, but Neville being a part of the Golden Trio (not really Trio then...) is so unnecessary for me ; like the author kept so many original stuffs that could have been easily transformed into better plot material, but changed the only things that would have been fine remaining just as J*R (as much as I hate her) had made them, ie. Hermione, Ron and Harry dynamic. And I like Neville, but that remains there : I just like him as Harry's friend, I don't think he's such a significant character ; he seems quite plain with a 'I-say-the-right-thing-at-the-right-time' type of personnality, so no real thrill here Also, in this AU, given that Harry is clearly better surrounded (and good for him), what with his parents and Remus and Sirius and shit, I feel like his originally close friendship he shares with Hermione and Ron is clouded by his newfound relationships, especially with Tonks, Cedric and Neville. Three characters I don’t care much about, sadly (really I wish I cherish them the way the author seems to). Again, not my AU, and I wouldn't have bothered complaining about it at all if it wasn't thrown in my face every ten pages.
Well that is about it I think... Unfortunately, the 'flaws' that draw me back the most are ones depicted at numerous times during the fic, so much that I found myself unable to wave it off and tend to make difficult appreciating the good things, such as :
1) Harry : entertaining narrator still, not always reliable but isn't it what make his perspective better ? I appreciate the author's great efforts in her writing of Harry ; she kept his major personnality traits (loved his sassiness and unmatching instinct) but also managed to fit in some personnality traits that could only have passed throught James and Lily (and even Sirius and Remus at some extent)
2) The angst, aka my top 3 favorite tag (and its not 3rd) In the previous parts (PS, CoS and PoA), Harry's relationship with his parents were cute and all but hardly realistic : it appeared like James and Lily never fight, apart from some irrelevant bickering, never wronged Harry in any way and talked to him in a too-flawless way as if each time they praised or scolded him, it would seem as if they were reading a pre-made speech (or maybe am not used to children being raised correctly). Anyway, this time, Harry actually showed some (justified, if you ask me) frustration and bitterness toward his parents, and it was somehow refreshing to read about their arguments, because it made Harry, James and Lily more like actual persons rather than boring, too-perfect heroes (they do are heroes, but they can and should carry some defaults)
3) Remus and Sirius relationship. Its here guys, wolfstar in this AU is truly confirmed (not that it wasn't obvious before) ; even if i didn't care much for Tonks pov, I like how she was included ; it made a rather exciting love triangle
I took days to finish up this review because I was lazy and always struggle to write down what go throught my mind ; but not yapping for 7 paragraphs about a 1131 pages book would be like not having read it all, so here it is. Still, maybe I should have take it upon myself and have it wrapped up in one go, because I know there are things I forgot to mention. Plus, I am 11% away from the end of Half Blood Prince (the AU) by now, so imma get ready to review this up
Update : honorable mention to the author, who started her AU in 2015, finished it around Covid, and still reply to my comments 5 years later <3
I wondered how the end of 5th book would be changed and wasn't disappointed. I also liked various POV chapters through the book - we got Ron, Hermione, Tonks, Cedric and some more: it's a great tool the author used when plot didn't differ much from canon.
