EXTREME ENTREPRENEURSHIP: From war zones to jungles to slums to where capitalism is illegal, this book contains true stories of people making their startups work in some of the most challenging contexts. Written by an award-winning professor at a top-ranked entrepreneurship school based on his interviews with startup founders in some of the more than 120 countries he has visited, there are no Silicon Valley stories of free office perks here. Instead, you can expect to find uniquely inspiring stories and universal lessons about life and business from interesting people and places around the world.
Everybody should read this book. I mean, literally everybody. If you're someone interested in business, it will expand your horizons by showing you things far outside of your industry, market, or area of expertise. If you're someone looking for nuggets of wisdom to drive your personal success, it will present a curated collection of them from around the world. If you're someone interested in travel, it will show you parts of the world you've likely never been to, and equally as likely wouldn't have the courage to visit. If you're someone who simply likes good, people-centric stories, it's chock full of them.
If you're someone who's none of those things, you, above all others, should challenge yourself and take this book on. It will open your eyes to goings-on in the world that we all need to know about. “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts." So said someone wise, reputedly Mark Twain. The next best thing to getting on a plane is picking up this book.
Impatient reader (like me)? No worries. The author's writing style makes for fast, easy reading, and convenient navigation between stories and within stories, so you can jump around and find the parts that will interest you the most. But chances are you'll be riveted from the beginning and will go straight through, cover to cover.
I can't recommend this highly enough. We owe the author a debt of gratitude for doing the legwork to put these stories and lessons in front of us in so palatable a format.
This book is very helpful in telling you about other people's experiences around the world with forming a business. It definitely gives you some perspective to think about. You learn about the obstacles people face in various countries, and it makes our lives here seem a lot easier in comparison.
The book did repeat itself in places. The first part of the book kept telling you about these stories, but took a while to get to them. Then it gave you a summary of each story, and then at the beginning of each story, another summary. I feel like that could have been shortened somehow, but the book is still very useful.
This is a must read! Reading over the stories that he has experienced from across the world has inspired me to go out there and explore the world even more. Each story is so unique in the way that one may focus more on the legal aspects of starting a business and another story may focus on the obstacles of starting a business and how to overcome them. Each story has some sort of advice and tips to take away which I always look forward to when reading the stories.
Such a great book! I learned so much about business, law, and just that so many things can connect to each other. It was extremely interesting to read all of these stories from around the world; it gives you a much larger perspective on life and how people can come from near bankruptcy to a successful entrepreneur, or how one can use their ideas for the benefit of society as a whole.
He stories from this book will inspire and make you believe that good things happen in this world. Even in hard situations there is always a person who takes it on and has the drive to make dreams come true and not simply their own but the dreams that can make the world around them a better place.
The stories in this book are inspiring. They give insight on how people around the world are making a difference in their communities by stepping up in challenging circumstances. The book is fun to read and very educative. The takeaways at the end of every story are useful lessons for life.
The book is very interesting as it gives insights to international business and how they began. It is also a very personal book since the author personally experienced being in these businesses. The stories are truly inspiring since they are real life situations.
This book is amazing. The stories from across the world explain how business law is in everyday life, including illicit activities! If you care about law, entrepreneurship or just want a good read I highly recommend this book. -Andrew Pollard
