Jerry has always enjoyed playing the popular trading card game “Jigoku.” A dark and macabre game from Japan, which is about battling gruesome monsters in a fantasy world. Collecting the cards and imagining himself in the wild world the monsters exist, has become his favorite pastime. Depressed that the fictitious monsters don’t exist in his world, a thought occurs to him. Maybe they don’t just have to be fiction. Maybe the fantasy can become real. But at what cost?

This book is probably the biggest guilty pleasure I've read this year. The exposition could be better handled, but I don't care. I was grinning the entire way through because of the camp, and that's okay. It's literally Pokemon Cards but they're as entertaining as bum fights, and reading it makes me smile so hard it just makes my day.

It's my favourite Gardner book so far but there is still a fatal flaw: it's too short. I want more. I want to see Jerry asserting dominance over the monsters the same way Judge Holden asserts dominance over the idiot. I want more crazy bumfights. I like the premise but I did not consent to be blueballed. I want a direct sequel or a bonus DLC chapter.

Either way you should read the book if you're still hesitating. Shit is kino. 👌

This is now Gardner's 8th book and I certainly admire the work ethic. I had my issues. The first chapter is a bit hard to get through, he still has his issues with comma usage. His character's voice lacks something in the way of believability. But after the introduction it becomes an easy read, the inciting incident was a quality bit of horror writing and this certainly lives up to the idea of being Goosebumps for Adults. But an editor would greatly benefit the young author.

my naivety about 4chan memes has caused a deep shame in continuing to read this series without actually knowing the backstory behind it.

Another great read from Gardner himself.

This one follows Jerry as he explores the world of Jigoku in the hopes of defeating his rival Liam. The characters are very similar to Ash and Gary from Pokemon and it's something that's hard to ignore once you notice it.

Although the story covers some dark themes, the story is very sweet at its core and there are some returning faces from previous books from the Horror's Call series.

The book's a fun little read, 4/5.
