Twenty-four years in an asylum is enough time to really lose your mind. And arouse one to unleash the dark and vengeful thoughts residing therein.
Hagatha Ketchel was beyond distraught. She was shunned and cast out by her husband for bearing him a daughter instead of a son. Hysterical, she did the unthinkable. And for it, she was committed to a mental institution.
They told Hagatha her stay there would help. They claimed that it was much more humane than other insane asylums. Yet, Hagatha’s hopes were dashed. She descended into a deeper and darker place—a place no one would ever want to go.
Hagatha did the only thing she could – she found a way to live with her demons. Not just exist with them but use them to her advantage. She may have seemed like the model patient when she was discharged after 24 years. But there was nothing therapeutic about her transformation.
Her extended incarceration was the genesis of Hagatha’s lethal plan and life-long commitment. Those who spurned her in the past hadn’t a clue of the calamity she was about to unleash.

Chris Bliersbach grew up in Minnesota and now lives in Nevada, where he’s still learning how winter is supposed to work. After 38 years in healthcare, he finally gave in to the urge to write thrillers—apparently swapping one high-stress profession for another. Since 2019, he’s published 23 books across four fast-paced, occasionally disturbing series.
His Table for Four medical thrillers explore a miracle cure for Alzheimer’s with deeply unfortunate side effects, inspired in part by his parents’ battle with the disease. A portion of the proceeds is donated to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America—because some stories should help in real life, too.
The Aja Minor series follows a troubled teen with psychic abilities who catches the attention of the FBI and uses her “curse” to hunt sexual predators. It’s equal parts crime thriller, emotional wrecking ball, and justice served. Proceeds support the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
Chris also writes occult horror in Slaughter, Minnesota, where Old Lady Ketchel terrorizes the town (and absolutely hates children), and serial-killer suspense in The Metronome Man, featuring a murderer who keeps better time than most drummers.
He’s also written a romance novel and two poetry collections—because even thriller writers have feelings. When he’s not writing, he’s walking his dogs and wondering why his characters never listen to him.
On one hand I liked learning more about what pushed Hagatha Ketchel down a dark and evil path but at the same time I found myself hating her at times. I can understand her wanting revenge against her evil ex but attacking young kids was something I still can figure out. That and she seemed to have a hatred against her daughter and granddaughter while using her great-granddaughter for her evil schemes. I did like how the author explained what life was like in the asylum and the abuse that took place but I feel like the woman we should have been rooting for was just too damn evil. In the end she was way worse then her ex.
Hagatha Ketchel Unhinged is a chilling and unforgettable dive into the mind of a woman twisted by betrayal and madness. Chris Bliersbach captures the perfect mix of horror, tragedy, and psychological suspense. I couldn’t stop reading Hagatha’s transformation from a wronged wife to something far darker is both heartbreaking and terrifying. The atmosphere of the asylum is vividly written, making you feel every flicker of insanity and every ounce of vengeance she harbors. By the time she’s released, you know nothing good can come of it and yet you can’t look away. Disturbing, emotional, and brilliantly crafted, this is a must-read for fans of psychological and small-town horror.
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
This is a story/book based on generalization revenge. It starts out simply enough, and circumstances and events spiraled out of control and bam, you have a serial killer somewhat. The way that the murders are done are unique and seemingly untraceable, sectioned out over time, and methodically planned out. A very god read.
