My First Green Cook Book is absolutely fantastic I love it. This is the best ever cook book I have read with vibrant colourful illustrations and step by step instructions to help you. It’s ideal for children teenagers or adults.
We as a family do eat and cook a lot of vegetarian food, so this Green Cook Book has given me ideas that I never thought about cooking. one of my favourite recipes in this book is how to make Sweetcorn Potato cakes that can be cut into shapes using a biscuit cutter. Children will love to have Spooky Carrot Soup it’s ideal for Halloween. Cheesy Rabbit Biscuits is another recipe I’m going to give a try at making. If you want to know how to keep the kids quiet then there’s a delicious recipe for Chocolate Cookies. And there’s a brilliant recipe for winter Reindeer Puds that will be extra fun for children to help make.
Please don’t miss out on this absolutely fabulous cook book, it’s a 100% a must buy. Thank you so much Walker books sending me this gorgeous cookbook .
This is a brilliant cookbook for children focusing on green recipes which are all vegetarian and many are vegan or can have ingredients replaced to become vegan recipes too. The book is A3 in size and is filled with thick glossy pages of text and illustrated recipes. The front cover has some additional embossing which I like too. After enjoying the first cookbook for children by David Atherton I was extra keen to read this having grown up as a vegetarian at a time when many of my friends and their families didn’t know what to feed me when I came around to their houses. This book is filled with lots of fun and interesting recipes with such fun sounding dishes that I’m sure even many non-veggies will enjoy eating.
The book begins with an introduction by the author including some information of what eating green is. I like how this book is positive about vegetarian and even vegan recipes and how eating green is mentioned to be more than just about being meat free but also has to do with what sorts of food we eat at what time of year and how we can make healthier choices, etc. There are a couple of pages explaining what basic store cupboard ingredients and equipment will be needed in the book before the rest of the book then focuses on the recipes, which are separated into four sections: Yummy Meals, Savoury Snacks, Sweet Treats and Showstoppers.
There is a real mix of different recipes in each section and I love how inventive they all are. There are some basic things that I remember trying as a child like making a pizza but in this book a recipe like that is given a new twist. Every recipe looks fun and easy to do although obviously some help from an adult will be needed. I like how clear the instructions are though with the ingredients list and method for making being clearly shown and each instruction in the recipe being accompanied with a small image making it much easier to understand and follow.
Apart from all of the recipes being vegetarian and/ or vegan with the replacement of some ingredients for plant based products like plant milks and cheeses, etc, the book is also interesting as each recipe has a new inventive twist on the classic ingredients, adding some vegetables and fruits you might not expect into many of the recipes. My favourite recipes which I now want to try include the Cheesy Rabbit Biscuits which are so cleverly made to look like rabbits using a biscuit cutter that I wasn’t expecting, the Pea-camole which is a clever twist on guacamole, the Spooky Carrot Soup, Cauli Hot Wings, Birds’ Nests which seem so simple but probably look so amazing, the Chocolate Cookies which have some ingredients I never would have thought of for a biscuit and the Summer Sandcastle Cake which is so clever and I’m sure looks amazing to make and I’m sure is very fun to create too!
There are illustrations throughout the book with lots of fun images of cats, mice and dogs on various pages among the food. I love the clearly vegetarian cat on one page dreaming of eating the food there. Each recipe has illustrations of the ingredients and the method used as well as a final image of the food as it should look too. I have to say I really love the style of illustrations used, the thick back outlines and the fun and cute way everything looks. It makes all of the recipes look so easy and simple to make and I’m sure many children will enjoy following the recipes with the illustrations really helping to make sense of the instructions.
Overall this is a brilliant book and I can’t wait to read the next book by Atherton for children which concentrates on baking. It’s definitely a book I would have loved trying out as a child and I’m sure many kids and adults will enjoy trying these recipes together and creating some fun green food. It might even help those non-vegetarian friends or children who don’t like vegetables to realise that veggies and veggie food can be fun and tasty too! -Thanks to Walker Books for a free copy.
If you are a vegetarian household, or if you just want to add more veggies to your family meals and want your kids to be excited about that (not small task!) then this book is a great addition to your table.
There are lots of different types of food within this boardbook, from main meals to snacks or showstopper cakes! The autumn woodland cake is a real showstopper and the spooky carrot soup or cheesy rabbit biscuits are great seasonal fun for kids to enjoy.
I really appreciated that the book has great pictures, reasonable instructions and prep, but also has genuinely tasty recipes in it. My only complaint is that the book is huge in size, not content, and this means it doesn't really fit comfortably anywhere in the kitchen (or wouldn't rest against a recipe book stand, for instance).
A nice addition we will certainly return to.
