HVISKE (Norway)

Here in the fjordic crags, each of us can be the victim of ourselves, the frozen death within waiting to be unleashed. I hear their silent whispers cry… ‘meg, meg, meg’. Most I choose to ignore, letting karma’s destiny of actions unfold. For those I extricate, the journey into the Northern Light or depth of darkness is swift.

Choose wisely, hviske within.

WIDOW’S WALK (Falmouth)

After inheriting a historic mansion on the shores of Cape Cod. Abigail is consumed by grief for the loss of an incredible woman, and tormented by a childhood ghost that does everything possible to scare her out of her wits.

When the troubling entity makes physical contact, it’s clear that Abby is in danger. Does the mysterious phantom want her dead?

SCULPTURE OF THE DEAD  (Aspen)

I touch the cold, Colorado marble with my hands, running my fingers over the veins. I know when the stone matches the traits of the departed. Sculptural portraits, masks of the dead, fragments of limbs…the living think they want to remember their dearly departed with my creations.

Sometimes it’s better to forget.

SPIRIT ISLAND (Jasper)

Seychelle is a free spirit, taking one day ay a time and doing her best to help her family. When she accepts a creative assignment and experiences something, haunting and otherworldly in the wilderness… will it help her understand her own life better or carry her down a crooked and violent path she cannot return from?

The past is alive.

MODE de VEUVE NOIRE (Quebec City)

Selfie, pose, look at me, I’m the fashion influencer you want to be.

Follow, buy, so yesterday, darling--opinions, trends my ultimate worth. When wannabe, legend in her own mind Monique hits the streets of Quebec with an antique camera once owned by the famed Madame Coco, the photos she takes provide a stroke of famed acclaim, or dismal despair to those she hoped to install in her style hall of shame. The camera never lies, Madame.

Click. Click. Click.

RAGNO DAZANTE (Italy)

Itsy, bitsy spider, dance, twirl and spin that tangled web. What waits for us on the other end of the cosmic red string? Aurelia has it all, a lush life in Italy, and fierce looks to match, yet she uses her power to dominate, mistreat and humiliate another woman.

When Pietra finally embraces her dark birthright, the wicked game is afoot.

Thank you for reading and enjoying TANGLED WEBS. See you on the flip side...

I was whisked away by these stories, straight from my living room to places all around the world: Norway, Canada, Italy, and the US. They are immersive experiences that run the gamut from light to dark, from amusing to gruesome. They are filled with imagination and each author's unique brand of paranormal storytelling, and the subtle theme of webs and the creatures that spin them runs through the stories like a trail of silk. Other themes run through the stories, too: love, loss, greed, hatred, fear, and uncertainty.

The places where these stories are set are described in evocative detail that places the reader right into the minds of the narrators, experiencing the horror of each tale right along with the characters. One feels the howling wind of Falmouth, MA, for example, and experiences the chill of an ice hotel in Quebec City.

This was a fascinating follow-up to Hearth Fires, the first book in the series, and I look forward to the tales these authors concoct next Halloween.

“Oh what a tangled web we weave…” Sir Walter Scott said it first, and now two of my favorite modern-day writers have created a collection of short stories that feature one-of-a-kind characters getting tangled in terror in a variety of ways. “Tangled Webs” by Bibiana Krall and Veronica Cline Barton is their second collection of short stories that feature mystery, the paranormal, and folklore mystique. Each story (there are six) takes place in an enticing location that is vividly described and each story features splashes of luxury that makes the terror even more grotesque. Nicely done, authors!

“Hviske” set in Norwegian fjord features Moder Jode (Mother Nature) and as we well know our “mother” is a force!

Next we go to Falmouth near Cape Code and meet a ghost on a “Widow’s Walk”.

“Sculpture of the Dead” takes place in Aspen and gives us a range of feelings- from the grotesque to the hilarious!

“Spirit Island” in awe-filled Jasper National Park shows us that “every day is a an opportunity when you live a creative life”- until you meet an ancient legend.

Off to Quebec City we go for “Mode de Veuve Noire” where exotic luxury abounds and fear pushes back.

“Ragno Dazante” in sunny Taranto, Italy invites us to a glamorous party that is overwhelmed by an ancient legend.

The authors include personal notes at the end and tell us that these stories allowed them to explore “the psychological aspects of actions and thoughts of characters, when confronted with the bizarre and unsettling.” Many of the troubles that beset the characters came from within them- their own personal twilight zones.

Each tale in the collection begins with a beguiling quote from a memorable person. The stories are well written, timely, creative and imaginative, and just unsettling enough. (Creak! Gasp!) I liked that the mix of glamor, and luxury was a chilling contrast to the creepy, unsettling forces of the dark side. If you manage to stay calm while reading, at the end of the book, you will be rewarded with delightful recipes, that are favorites of the authors. Readers- let’s show off our best charcuterie boards!

Highly recommend! Happy Halloween!

Bibiana Krall and Veronica Cline Barton have come together again with six masterfully crafted short stories set in several geographical locations (Norway, Falmouth, Aspen, Jasper, Quebec City, and Taranto). The stories are as diverse as the authors themselves, with haunted towns, houses, churches, sculptures, photos, devious spirits, and a five-foot-tall vengeful tarantula. This is a perfect read for the season. And don’t miss the author’s seasonal recipes at the end of the book, drinks to warm the chills you'll feel reading these haunted tales.

I enjoyed each story and highly recommend Tangled Webs: The Haunted Series, Book 2. I'm looking forward to a third book in the series.

“Time has a cruel way of making you forget what’s important to remember.’( Tangled Web)
Two incredible stories (recipes you’ll love, as an added bonus, at the end) with things that go bump and, sometimes, not just at night! Come meet a bigger than life crew of characters that will both delight and, yes, even tease your senses. Meet me at the Clinic for your scheduled wellness package. Say hi to Anna, Elisa, Aron, Dr. Aries, Nora, Johannesburg, Miss Olga, Elisa, Abigail Dickerson-don’t be surprised when you’re surprised or a muted tingling becomes an ear-piercing moan or screech! “The discord on the planet is out of control.” (Tangled Weds) ‘Girl, do you have ESP?’ (Krall) Excellent raise goosebumps on your body read!
Then, wait for it!
Who wouldn’t want a Greer sculpture (of a dearly departed family member) taking up residence in your home? FOREVER!?!! But, that’s what Greer does-owns googles of Oz shoes and plays with kiddy clay. Sculpt the legs (among other things) of a woman who made this commission part of her will. Oh! $20 million. $10 million per leg! What could possibly be the problem with this?
‘Universal Conscious…?’ Yes. Let’s have some of that!
But, wait. Get ready here they come!! Departed, to me, means they kind of left the building momentarily. Not here. Departed. No! Morphed, perhaps.
Shifted and a skewed frame is the least of the problems! Murder. Mystery. Poltergeist Activity. You may want to click your heels just about now and wish yourself home. Better still, whip up a batch of courage with extra ‘green fairy gold.’ Highly recommended!!

“The seeds of death grow within, lying in wait for their season to bloom…”
I was already familiar with the writings of authors Veronica Cline Barton and Bibiana Krall as I have read and enjoyed several of their books. So, when I saw a short-story collection featuring six tales with a paranormal theme (with each lady writing three), this looked to be something to pick up – particularly with Halloween approaching.
The stories are set in various parts of the world, and each of them is a quick, easy read – so you can pick the book up and put it down as chores call (although I read the whole lot in two sittings). No spoilers here, but there is good variety, excellent creation of atmosphere, and some twists along the way to be enjoyed.
“His face was contorted in pain and the other hand gripped his bloody chest.”
The volume also includes some seasonal recipes which, sadly, I cannot use as I am hopeless in the kitchen. I can even overcook salad.
I note that ‘Tangled Webs’ is the second book in ‘The Haunted’ series, so now I need to wheel back and read the first.
Highly recommended for lovers of the supernatural. And we are all like that at heart, aren’t we?

Do you love books that take you to far away destinations? Do you also love a good haunted tale? Then you have to read "Tangled Webs", the second installment of The Haunted series by authors Bibiana Krall and Veronica Cline Barton. I can't imagine a better Halloween treat than curling up near a cozy fire with this book and perhaps imbibing in one of the yummy drink recipes offered in the back pages. Yes, there IS a collection of fabulous autumn recipes following the chilling tales in this volume! It's like a spooky, deluxe Halloween party between the pages of a book.

This time around, the authors touch on the theme of webs, which packs a powerful punch of "Ah-Ha!" when coming across the references. Both writers dance elegantly around the imagery, which adds to the depth of each story. Much applause for the high level of entertainment wrapped very nicely in literary prose.

Part of the fun with this collection is that every reader is sure to have a favorite or two from the six story assortment. My personal faves? "Sculpture of the Dead" (Veronica Cline Barton) was fun, freaky, and spoke to me on many levels. I could fully empathize with the artist who did beautiful work, albeit on a creepy level. And so many shoes...need I say more? "Spirit Island" (Bibiana Krall) was scary as hell, but so beautifully written that I was ready to cry at the end. But fair warning, this is definitely the story you don't want to read before going to bed.

High recommendations for this luxury collection of dark fiction!

In tune with Halloween, ‘Tangled Webs’ is an anthology of ghostly short stories from the writing desks of Bibiana Krall and Veronica Cline-Barton – a pair who collaborate well, each bringing her own brand of ‘special’ to the pages.

As always, Ms Krall’s intrepid protagonists show plenty of chutzpah in the face of the supernatural – visions that are enough to send shivers down the hardiest of spines! Ms Cline-Barton’s tales centre on the glamorous and glitzy world of the filthy rich with all its trappings – something she excels at.

The settings for each story range far and wide, from the fjords of Norway to the Canadian Rockies, to a coastal city in southern Italy. The authors bring these places to life with their vivid imagery that is so evocative it stimulates the senses. The stories are a unique blend of ancient folklore and frightening spectres, as in ‘Widow’s Walk,’ and stark descriptions like those in ‘Mode De Veuve Noire’. Who would want to sleep on a bed of ice? There is also a touch of the bizarre, as in Sculptures of the Dead. Add to this the cast of vibrant characters in each of the stories and it all makes for entertaining reading that’s sure to raise a smile.

This is the second anthology from these accomplished writers who are both obvious ‘foodies’. Having read ‘Hearth Fires’ last year, I was gratified to see more of their mouth-watering recipes at the end of the book – a bonus in itself!

The author’s notes are also interesting as they give some background to the various places and an insight into what inspired them to write these intriguing tales. Hats off to a dynamic duo for adding a little spice to the spirit of Halloween.

Tangled Webs, the second book in The Haunted Series, by Bibiana Krall and Veronica Cline Barton was a read that kept me engaged, intrigued, and had me constantly guessing and wondering about what was of this life and what was from another dimension and time. Each of the six stories took me on an adventure to new and mysterious places. I felt like each story could be a modern version of The Twilight Zone. If you are ready to take a journey into the wonder of the unknown, ghostly, and unearthly, this is the book for you! It is terrific!

Tangled Webs, the delicious follow-up to Hearth Fires, features six stories perfect for starting the autumn, and Halloween, season! Bibiana Krall and Veronica Cline-Barton create tales to expertly escort us from the bright and sunny world of summer into the misty, ominous realm of the thinning veil. Locations range from the stunning landscape of Norway to the rugged backcountry of the United States. At times, the arachnoid theme is spun delicately, just barely discernible yet still lurking. In some stories, an unmistakably bold thread winds its grasp around the characters. The stories are varied in time, place, and type: traditional with a twist, modern, and reimagined. If you are in the spooky season mood, but especially if you are not yet, settle in a comfy chair with a beverage and follow the spider’s trail into Tangled Webs.
