This was a mixed bag. What do you do when you start really enjoying the book 70% in? lol
My very first time traveling romance and it was interesting. I'm not a fan of this trope and generally avoid it so to have the heroine herself put into words exactly why I’m not a fan I thought was funny and rather ironic:
It's so morbid and exactly why I generally avoid this particular trope. And it's brought home even harder near the end. I've been trying to spread my wings and try new things this year with my reading choices and the cover and the blurb of this intrigued me so I took a chance. This started off strong but this had serious pacing issues that ruined whatever intrigue I initially had. The first 30 pages is the heroine Meggie moving from NY to Scotland to lick her wounds after an ugly break up with her fiance and helping her Nan do chores on her farm and describing the landscape, the weather, tea drinking, market shopping and how lonely she is in navel gazing detail. Only for her to fall through a cave portal and end up in 1658 Scotland with barefoot, bare chested, kilt wearing brawny Highlanders (why do these guys go hunting barefoot and bare chested…?) with a hero Colin who is all smiles and easy charm. My first immediate red flag and complete surprise was when we have the hero spitting out sweet nothings not even 5 minutes after meeting the heroine in the woods:
Whiplash anyone? Instant-lust is an instant mood killer for me. The pacing is odd because the author is so meticulous in setting up the plot and world building and building up scenes and yet the romance for more than half the book is rushed as hell and underdeveloped. You can give me lengthly detail of Colin going on hunts in flashbacks (I didn't understand why this was so important?) and how the heroine describes all the ingredients to put in her macaroons and figure out how to make ice cream using a barrel but you can't do the same with the romance? The heroine is a baker and she loves her sweet tooth. We get it. But if you are gonna give me a time traveling romance I'd rather more page time spent on the hero and heroine together than her love for cooking and her bond with the castle's ornery cook. Honestly it almost felt at times like Meggie and Cook's love story than Meggie and Colin's. lol There was just so much talk about her baking and what ingredients were used and descriptions of food that it got a little absurd. Like I said this didn't really grab my attention until 70% in and that was in large part because of the action and kidnapping and the adrenaline suspense of the heroine trying to escape a hellish dungeon and nearly getting raped by her captor. This author is very talented in involving all your senses and descriptive prose but she really needs to work on her pacing. She takes her time with scenes but you need patience. I won't lie I skimmed parts because of this. The endless expositions and meandering long winded monologues are a lot. I finally managed to feel something for our couple when things got really dire near the end. Which comes to my next issue and why I struggled to rate this.
This did that thing in the end that I hate which was disappointing. Yes there is a HEA but This is the other reason why I don't like time traveling in my romances because there's always the difficult choice of one half of the pairing having to give up literally their whole life just to be with the person they love in a different century. I can overlook it if the compromise/sacrifice feels fair, for me it didn't here. It's just depressing as hell and just puts a pall over the happy ending for me. Like 'oh sorry boo your whole family and friends are long dead and compost but welcome to the future! Now lemme teach you how to drive!' 😐
Anywho, first half was a long winded boring mess, second half was better. I want to give Malcolm's book a go. Arranged marriage to a witch sounds super intriguing. The main reason I dug my heels in and kept going was because I wanted to see how the end would play out but also because I was intrigued by the hero's older brother the Laird of the keep, Malcolm. I loved this dear sweet man and how lonely but selfless he was. I've never seen a sibling go to such lengths to save his brother like this character does. It was so touching and bittersweet. 😭 Yes I cried over how he got a message in the end. It always impresses me when authors manage to create deep secondary connections that you feel are just as strong as the romance. That's not easy to do.

I didn’t want to be in a place where he didn’t exist. I couldn’t go back knowing he was long dead and buried, while I still had decades of life left to live, and I couldn’t chance going back for even a short time because I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to return.

Magical First Installment and Debut Fantasy Romance!
When I tell you that THIS BOOK BROKE ME…UGH. I don’t think I’ll be able to function for a considerable time now, but it’s a welcome and happy kind of heart-wrenching feeling, trust me! So, of course I highly recommend this gorgeous fantasy novel to any fellow diehard Outlander book/show fans, but also I implore all you lovers of fantasy romance and fairytales and historical fiction adventure to dive into this one immediately. I was utterly enraptured cover to cover and find myself already missing this world and desperately awaiting the next installment!
This book will forever resonate for me as a perfect blend of an Outlander-inspired world and atmosphere but with a wholly original narrative, complete with its own brilliant cast of characters and dazzlingly different plotline. The writing is absolutely STUNNING and I adored the pacing of the romance in particular. So often we see the adult/NA fantasy genre inundated with the typical slowburn/enemies-to-lovers pairings, but you don’t often find authors who dare to be unique and are skilled enough in their writing to capture such a glorious love story outside of these tropes.
But OMG y’all, let me tell you—this book succeeds far and away and will always standout in my memory with its beautifully written swoon-worthy and toe-curling spicy scenes!! I simply couldn’t get enough. I was obsessed with Meggie and Colin as a couple—they feel that burning connection from the start and they chase after it, challenging each other and learning for one another, ultimately culminating in one of the most poignant tales of true love I’ve ever experienced.
That ending blew my entire freaking mind and I’m already in love with Malcolm and Coira. So very desperate for their book coming soon!!!

I'm confused by the high ratings this has received. This is a pale imitation of Outlander. The worst part is how LITTLE actually happens. There's no obstacle to Colin and Meggie's love story, just happy flutters until close to the end. Honestly, the story is dull.

I don't know what it was, but as much as I tried, I just couldn't connect with this story? The beginning kind of dragged for me, but then simultaneously the romantic arc was too fast? I was just left overall kind of bored which made skim stuff towards the end. I'm not sure what the issue was, but I wasn't invested like I'd hoped I would be.
I'll probably still check out the sequel when it releases though, I liked Malcom as a character more so than Colin (just personal preference, they're both great men) and his is supposed to be an enemies to lovers with arranged marriage plot so, that's more along the lines of what I like to read.

This had all the cozy & adventurous vibes I needed, a beautifully detailed romp through 17th-cent. Scotland, great voices, really sweet main protags, and an immersiveness that made it a perfect story to cuddle up with in the evenings. I love that the MCs are total sweethearts, and the warmth and togetherness of the MacKinnon clan in general. And also, that beautiful cover illustration is by Merwild, right?!?! I have followed that artist forever so it's SO COOL to see them doing cover art.
Loved Iona the head cook & Malcolm most of all (the "crashing into the kitchens like an overgrown hobbit" part had me burst out laughing). I'm curious to read his book, and see how the time-traveling aspect will be used that storyline, where both MCs will be from the same era (if it's used at all? But seeing as , I'm so curious! The magic system is really intriguing so I'd love to see where the author takes it.)

Sadly I just got bored with this one. Not much happens. There is a potential love story but it turns into more lust. They are married before they know each other. I just didn't like the main character either. I had a hard time with her. I skimmed to the end once I got to 60%. There were so nice moments but overall just didn't pull me in.

I wasn't sure how I felt about this book, but then that ending really got me. Sooo...
If you enjoy a good blast to the past romance, then I highly encourage you to check this one out.
Our story starts with Meg, a baker in New York who's just been dumped by her cheating boyfriend. Looking for a change in scenery, she travels to Scotland to visit her grandma and to kinda get a reset on life.
As we all know, Scotland is the land of fae lore and all things mythical, and it doesn't take long for our heroine to find herself in a pinch when she accidently travels to the past. And the book takes off from there.
What I enjoyed most about this book was definitely it's characters. Colin and Malcom being my favorites. I even found myself loving many of the secondary characters as well.
But Colin is our hero here, and I was getting some serious Jamie vibes from Outlander. He's a warrior, he's sweet, he's teasing. It was just so easy to fall in love with him. He's your typical gentle giant. And I always fall for those types in books. So understandably, I spent most of this book sighing over him.
He's not a perfect guy (which made him even more dreamy to me). He makes mistakes, he's shy sometimes, and we even see him get angry at Meg. But under all that? He's a big teddy bear. And he always puts Meg and others before himself.
The pacing for this book was really slow though. Especially after the 25% mark, things just drag until the last 5 to 6 chapters of this book. But I'll give credit where credit is due by saying that the author really took her time laying the foundation for a lot of these characters. She allows you to really get to know them. And I would argue that good characterization is more important than story and pacing.
Which brings me to Meg. I didn't dislike Meg. I actually liked her a lot in the beginning of this book. But she does some things later in the story that just scream selfish and a little irresponsible. Namely, doing stupid heroine shit like putting herself into danger for no reason. If you've read this book, then you might no what I'm talking about. Yeah, that scene near the end when she's supposed to be running away from danger, but circles back for apparently no good reason.
I mean, if you're not gonna help, why be there? I know this was to help the story progress a certain kind of way, but I feel like it could have been executed better.
Which brings me to my next point. What I absolutely hated about this book and almost had me giving it 3 stars instead of four. The villain
I can't stand a book with stupid villains or a very weak conflict. I almost wish that the author didn't include a villain at all in this book because he was just so damn cheesy. You know, the types that like to hear themselves talk and go on paragraph long monologues while they explain their evil scheme to the hero or heroine.
I know we need to know why the bad guy does what he does, but let's just say our villains' motives here were weak as fuck. Far fetched, reaching, and just....stupid. I just wanted a better conflict is all. Hell, a meteorite falling out of the damn sky would have been better than this guy. Also, I'm strongly convinced that the conflict in a story doesn't always have to be a person .
Despite this, the author really redeemed herself in the end. Up until the 80% mark, the story was pretty predictable and the pacing was sluggish. Then things take a turn and we're rewarded with a little plot twist as well as the author setting things up for the next novel. Things are spiced up a little bit with some magic, and although the ending wasn't sickeningly perfect, it was just the right amount of bittersweet. Which is my personal preference.
To be honest, I'm probably rating this book higher than it should be. But I understand it takes a lot of groundwork and foundation to start a series. You have to give just enough information for your readers not to be lost, while at the same time avoiding information overload. This book did get a little wordy at times, and I found myself skimming, but overall? I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. And for that? 4 stars.

So I had a lovely time with this book. I meeded a pallette cleanser and this did a great job of that.
A modern woman falls through a time rift in a cabe and ends up in Scotland. We've been there, we've read that, but I still liked it a ton.
I think the pacing got a bit wonky and I wish it was a bit spicer for what I got but the audiobook was well done and it flew by.
I will pick up book 2 to see about the brother for sure.

WOW! I was completely transported to a different world while reading The Shield and the Thistle (and honestly, I’m still reeling a bit). This book was so full of adventure, romance, heartache, fun, time travel, and fantasy. I was glued to the pages from start to finish. I also have to mention that the cover (both dust jacket and naked book) is GORGEOUS; I am someone who does judge a book by its cover.
The character descriptions, world-building, period details were incredibly detailed and well developed. The way Jillian described something simple such as a hill covered with heather is breathtaking.
I really enjoyed the two main characters and having both of their POVs. Meggie Washington and Colin MacKinnon are polar opposites. Meggie is a woman from the 21st century. She is self-sufficient, strong-willed, and strongly connected to her Scottish heritage. She does not take no for an answer but knows when to respect her elders, like her Nan. Finding herself in 1658 she is able to find a connection to her past through cooking.
Colin on the other hand is a 17th-century Scottish warrior. He is the brother of Laird Malcom MacKinnon. Men of that time period saw their women as property and often did not respect and woman’s thoughts or wishes. Although Colin is fierce and battle-hardened, he is warm-hearted and seeks a passionate love. Colin is not your typical Scottish warrior.
I also really enjoyed that a lot of the classic (and overdone) tropes weren’t present, such as virgins, pregnancy, etc. I am picky when it comes to the historical fiction I read, not all of it grips me and I have DNF quite a few. It never crossed my mind to dislike this book, EVER.
The Shield and the Thistle gives me Outlander (Diana Gabaldon), The Time Traveler’s Wife (Audrey Niffenegger), and The Highlander series (Karen Marie Moning) vibes. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I cannot praise Jillian enough for her fantastic writing, I’m going to read everything she writes. I cannot wait for the next installment in The Grey Tower Chronicles!

Jillian does a fantastic job of bringing her characters to life. Meggie,
Nan, Colin, Malcolm, Mrs. Cook, and the others are easy to like. As
anyone would, Meggie struggles with finding herself stuck in the past
and leaving her family behind in the future. She finds solace in the
kitchen and befriends the cranky cook, Iona. Iona quickly becomes one of
my favorite characters.
The setting is gorgeous. I don't know much about Scotland in the 1600s,
but as well written as it was, I think the author must have spent a lot
of time researching it. Everything seemed believable to me.

what is everyone on about? this book was so boring
the first 80 pages are good and so are the last 50, but to be honest the whole middle is super boring and drags to no end

I love time travel historical romance books. There’s not many of them, and finding ones that’s actually good is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. This was okay and for the fact that I finished this is a day I gave it four stars. I liked the main character, the love interest wasn’t bad but it’s so insta love that its weird. If you’ve picked up this book hoping for it to be like Outlander; you’re going to be disappointed. They kissed on the same day they met, the same day that he killed three men in front of her, and on the same day she realizes she’s in 17th century Scotland!. I don’t care that he killed the men, but Meggie doesn't even stop to think about it beyond the initial response. The story was too fast paced for me, there was no outside danger beyond her being kidnapped. There was no struggle for her to assimilate to the 17th century. I also really don’t like that we got to see the very beginning of their marriage but the whole middle chunk of it is cut out and a time skip happens.
I did appreciate that we got to see her loss for leaving her grandmother behind. She was a likable character.
As for the end after Meggie is rescued (how is Colin able to rescue her by himself if the fortress is really so well fortified?) and Colin is injured it’s takes a nose dive.. In a time slip I don’t want to come back to the modern world. That’s the whole point of a time slip! What kind of time slip ends up with the main characters both in the 21st century to live the rest of their lives? Meggie should have just gone back to tell her grandmother she was okay, and then cross back over on the same day.
Over all it’s a 3.75 but rounded up to four stars.

I loved this book! Full disclosure...I know the author, but I think I may have even judged it more harshly because of this. For starters, the descriptions of the characters, scenery, etc were great! I find that some books give too much detail or use too many adjectives; this book was just right, in my opinion. It flowed well and was easy to read. It definitely required the suspension of disbelief, but that's part of the beauty of reading, isn't it? An escape from reality! I found myself thinking about the book during the day at work, looking forward to getting home to read more. I was torn between just enjoying the story and not wanting it to end, and wanting to find out what happens in the end! Now that I've finished The Shield and the Thistle, I can't wait for the next one in the series to come out. Congrats to this first time author, she hit a home run!

I don't think a romance book has ever made me struggle so much. As this is the author's debut (and I think it's self-pub) I don't want to rant TOO much. I also have to point out that the writing itself was really quite good (bit too full of adjectives which I think is smth many first-time authors' writing has). And if you are looking for a romance with many cosy moments, this one might just be for you.
I had some (minor) issues with the 'scottish' elements of the book:
- Geography wasn't used much but where it was it was rather strange. At one point they take the A83 to Cairndow (which exists) and it says that Loch Lomond was on their left. As they were coming from Glasgow, LL would have been on their right. Also, this area is firmly in the Highlands, but it's mentioned more than once that the grandma lives in the Lowlands (capital L too). Then they go to a market in Glen Etive, which is a strange choice as there's just a few scattered houses there, but ok.
- In trying to convey that the characters are Scottish, they ended up like sounding to pirates to me.
- There's quite some mixing of Gaelic and Scots, which were generally spoken in distinct areas of Scotland. Especially for the sections set in the past, this wouldn't make much sense I think.
My big issues were with the story itself, in how it was structured etc. (not in terms of triggering content). Mainly, the amount of action is very unbalanced between the first let's say 60% and the last 40%, with the latter being where almost everything happens. On top of that, there's a lack of conflict at times when it was really needed and would make sense, and a lot of the things that were happening didn't feel earned and properly build up.

I really enjoyed this book! I was bummed when it ended! And I was really bummed when I couldn't find a second book about Malcolm! I sure hope the author writes about Malcolm's story! I will definitely be following this author!

Wow, I loved this book. Not going to lie, I was a bit leery at first wondering if the author was going the Outlander route. BUT! No, she made this highland/time travel story all her own and it was beautiful. Loved everything about it. The setting, scenery, plot, characters. Loved it.

Move over Jamie, because Colin is here. But seriously, I feel like this book was written for me. It has all my favourite things: Scottish setting, girl falling through time, a very sexy Scottish warrior and a fast-paced story. The writing style was very pleasant, and it made it easy to read for me, which is always a plus! I cannot wait for the next book (is it here already?) and I can only highly recommend it!

I found it longer than necessary. The worst part is how LITTLE actually happens and I had a hard time connecting with the main character. The relationship felt rushed in the beginning and there's no obstacle to Colin and Meggie's love story, it just turns into lust.
There were some nice moments but I was just left overall kind of bored.

Actual Rating: 3.5 Stars!
Okay, so hear me out! I only gave this book a 3.5 because, despite enjoying the storyline, there were a few things that made it difficult for me to read. And it's not the triggers.
I will start with the cons since these are what affected my rating:
~The plot in the beginning had way too many similarities to the Outlander series. Now, I bet writing a book about time travel and with a Scottish setting is hard with Diana Gabaldon looming over your head, so I wanted to continue the book to see where the story goes.
~I've never been a fan of insta-love, and this relationship and the characters feelings were very rushed to me.
With those things being said, it wasn't until about 50% in that the story started to mold into something very different from Outlander. Then around 65%, the book really took off and became its own story. And once I reached 70%, I literally could NOT put it down...I stayed up until 6:30 in the morning finishing it. So yes, it does appear to be an Outlander rip-off, but I promise, it is its own story in the end. If this is the only reason you are hesitant to try it, give it a chance...you will be pleasantly surprised by it.
I love how this story had finality to it but left us wanting more within this world. I can't wait to follow the story of Malcolm in the next book in the series. I have a feeling that with the author's writing, vivid details, and ability to keep us captivated, I will enjoy the second book even more. Especially since it won't mirror another story, not have an insta-love story, and it will revolve around a likeable character that I grew to love from this book.

This debut is absolutely FANTASTIC!! It is a RIVETING time travel romance, perfect for fans of #Outlander. Bondarchuk's attention to detail is so enthralling and leaves the reader completely immersed in the story.
I really enjoyed that some things were withheld from the reader for dramatic effect. The flashbacks were very well placed and gave depth to the history and plot. I even caught some excellent foreshadowing that intrigued me greatly.
There was a lot I loved about this book. The relationship between Meggie and Nan and Colin and Malcom was amazing. It was very entertaining to watch Meggie attempt to rationalize everything around her and the obvious culture shock of the 17th century. She also learned that some parts of humanity don't change regardless of the century you live in.
I loved Meggie and Collin's relationship. It felt genuine and extremely romantic. There was initial hesitancy and distrust that grew into an amazing love story.
There were so many emotions invoked with this book. The magic, history, drama, love, and adventure were stellar. Overall an amazing read that I highly recommend! Looking forward to more in the Grey Tower Chronicles.

If you like magic, history, time travel, romance (and Outlander), you’ll love this book. I really enjoyed it!!
This book is so enchanting and beautifully written. The author is a first time indie author, and although there are a few editing errors, they’re nothing that distract you or take you away from the story. The imagery made me feel like I was actually in 1658 Scotland. I love historical books where you get to live the day to day life with the characters and this book definitely captures that so you get to vicariously live a cozy cottage (castle??) life through the characters.
There were just some things that I didn’t like, and that’s why I didn’t rate it 4 or 5 stars. First, the romance happened so fast but then so slow at the same time. The descriptions of Colin being this dangerous warrior were cringey to me and not what I like in a mcm. Second, I don’t like how sex trafficking was the conflict/danger of the story. It’s something that’s super dark and terrible that unfortunately happens everyday around the world and I don’t think it has any place in romance books. That’s just my personal opinion though and ultimately why I didn’t rate this book higher.

“My heart swelled ten times!”
Like Meggie, my heart truly enjoyed this new world of fantasy and romance! This author is new to me, but I couldn’t pass up on an ARC that promised me everything I love about fantasy- great characters, world building, romance, and adventure. Bondarchuk truly delivered.
Admittedly, it took me some time to understand the heavy Scottish dialect and changing POV, but once I did the story was solid from there.
From the beginning of Meggie’s heartbreaking story to finding love in the most unpredictable and unusual of circumstances, the author tugs your heart strings from page to page! She dealt with tough topics with a sensitivity that is often missing in the “escape through books” world we’ve come to accept.
What totally put that over the top for me, and likely the reason for a whole star of its own, is that she included real information for anyone dealing with or has knowledge of human trafficking! Not only will someone enjoy this fantastic read, but they can also get the help they need.
Five thousand claps and kudos to the author for knocking this clear out the park!

This was an enjoyable read!
I liked the setting and Meggie trying to find her niche in the past. I felt like her relationship with Colin was a little fast and instalove, and maybe would’ve benefited from a little more angst.
I felt like certain parts lagged a bit, but there was a lot of action at the end and once I hit that I didn’t want to put it down.
I feel…uncertain if I liked the ending. It was a twist on the normal to have him go forward in time rather than have her come back, but I felt like it would’ve been really hard for Colin. And I felt sad that Malcolm lost his brother! And every other character would never see them again. I know Meggie loses her world if it’s the other way, but she really only had her Nan. So, I kind of felt sad at the end, even though it was technically happy. 😅

Holy cow!! The anticipation for the next book is going to be my undoing! This book was phenomenal! I’m pretty sure I went up in smoke at one point (well several actually). Checked all the boxes and some!!!
I could not put this book down! Im really good at knowing where the ending is going to take me and this is one I was not expecting! Bravo to the author for that! It was a real treat! The only negative I have (actually two) is that because her descriptions are so spot on, her extensive knowledge and imagery make you feel like you are there, this caused me to starve through half the book because of the delicious sounding food!! And last, I dislike that I will now have to wait for book two. Even though she ties up everything in a beautiful bow I CANNOT WAIT to have more!!!! I’m actually tempted to deduct a star until the next one is out lol! Absolutely phenomenal read and you will NOT be disappointed! Go ahead and GET THIS BOOK!!

When I first read the blurb for The Shield and the Thistle, I was a bit concerned that the plot was too “Outlanderish”, but I couldn’t resist buying it due to my Scottish heritage and the book’s wonderful cover. I’m so glad I gave it a chance.
From the moment we meet Meggie, we feel for her. The characters are all well-developed and realistic. Jillian Bondarchuk’s descriptions of the scenery and surroundings had me convinced that she’d spent time in Scotland and really brought the book to life.
I loved the character growth, the development of relationships, and all of the twists and turns. This is definitely one of those books that I will keep on my bookshelf and read again and again. For now, I’m eagerly anticipating the second book in the series.

Wow! I'm blown away by this book. I loved everything about it and it's going to stay with me a while. At first it's very hard not to compare this book to 'Outlander', a modern-day woman who falls back in time to 17th century Scotland and meets the most gorgeous Scottish warrior ever written (insert Henry Cavill), but that is where the comparisons end, because Jillian Bondarchuk has created a very special world, with memorable, utterly loveable characters. There was a point near the end of this book where I literally burst into tears. I feel like if the author never wrote a sequel, this would be fine as a stand-alone, it felt like a complete story on its own. But the fact that I KNOW there is a sequel is awesome and I can't wait!! Bring me more Scottish warriors in kilts!

3.5 🌟 This gave very much outlander fan fiction but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I had a lot of issues with this book but I also enjoyed a lot of things. My biggest complaint is the pacing because from 10%-70% in the book virtually NOTHING happens. It was quite a bore tbh. The last 30% did have a bunch of action in it which kept me much more engaged but I did find the sudden introduction of the fantasy element a bit out of place?? But honestly judging by that introduction and where the second book seems to be going, I think I’m going to be enjoying the second book a lot more. Overall the book was a cozy fantasy-ish and I definitely think I would’ve preferred reading it in the autumn but alas my reading goal is suffering and I must fix that immediately.

Firstly whilst I'm all over paranormal romance like a bad rash, historical isn't usually my thing, but the blurb had me intrigued so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I'm so glad I did!!
