Ten short stories based on Lee Winter’s fierce and unforgettable ice queens and villains have been gathered into one anthology containing lesbian love, lust, friendship, and romance.
Find out what happened after Lee’s stories ended, and in one case, before it began. Iconic characters revisited include Elena Bartell (The Brutal Truth), Elizabeth Thornton (Breaking Character), Monique Carson (Hotel Queens), Natalya Tsvetnenko (Requiem for Immortals), Catherine Ayers (The Red Files), and Cynthia Redwell (Under Your Skin).
- Closeted actresses Elizabeth and Summer come out publicly in "Skye Storm’s Invite Absolutely Everyone Ultimate Pool Party." - CEO sex fantasies goddess Monique indulges in sizzling hijinks with the client you’d least expect in "Number Five." - There’s a wedding proposal in "The Brutal Lie" after media mogul Elena has exacted her sweet revenge on a rival for outing her and Maddie. - Ambitious and acidic TV producer Cynthia wakes up the day after Catherine Ayers’s wedding with a hangover and a butch ex-softballer in her bed in "When DC Met Iowa." - It’s launch day for reporter Maddie’s book of blogs in "Aliens of New York." But her publicist is confounded by the crazy rumor that media mogul Elena Bartell might show up. Why would she? - Sporting goods store manager Dani endures a quirky Aussie Christmas with her secret lesbian lover while facing off against her intimidating Great-Aunt Jean in "The Friend." - In "Five Times Felicity Met Elena", overlooked lawyer Felicity shares her first impressions of the imposing media legend who will one day become her boss. - Catherine and Lauren, two reporters madly missing each other, make their own sexy fun at an eccentric LA party in "Flashbang." - How does a renowned cellist and former Australian assassin cope with retirement from her more lethal habits in Vienna? Find out in "Love is Not Nothing." - In "First-Class Villains", four villains from multiple Lee Winter books accidentally meet in a fogged-in airport lounge. To pass the time, they place a small wager to decide who is the worst of them all.

This is the ultimate collection of Lee Winter short stories. This collection really came out at the perfect time for me. I have been super busy at work –Covid messed up deadlines- so I’ve had little time to read which is messing up my whole daily flow. Luckily, this being a short story collection, at least I was able to read a story every day. This took me way longer to review that I wanted to, but having those relaxing reading moments daily is what I really needed.
I almost feel at this point that I don’t even have to review this. Just saying the name Lee Winter means go read this. I honestly believe that Winter is one of the two best authors in WLW fiction –E.J. Noyes being the other- who are currently writing. And I would challenge anyone who disagrees to dueling pistols at dawn… just kidding:) But in all seriousness, Winter is one of the very best and it almost feels like she’s just showing off at this point. I mean come on, The Brutal Truth= just about perfect. Requiem for Immortals= brilliant. Hotel Queens= best WLW book of 2020. The Red Files and Breaking Character= well I think you get the idea here. Winter is the author of these amazing books and this collection of short stories ties right into them.
This is a collection that has one new story (from Hotel Queens) with the rest available from different places. Winter has given some stories to her newsletter subscribers; some have been released in previous collections, while others are available in YLVA’s shop. What makes this collection so good is that it is all of her shorts finally in one place. This is the ultimate collection for Lee Winters fans.
While I had many of these shorts already, I’d say 60% were new to me since I had not had the time to read them all yet. Winter is very good at writing shorts so I found that I even happily reread the shorts that I had read before. Any story with Req in it (from Requiem for Immortals) is just pure gold in my opinion. I also loved the shorts that tied into the Brutal Truth, and enjoyed the new Hotel Queens short about a sexy side character you will recognize.
I just want to make a point about two shorts that fall into the category I was mentioning above. While these are both older shorts, The Brutal Lie and Love is Not Nothing are very important stories. The Brutal Lie, really is like the true ending to The Brutal Truth and Love is Not Nothing, really is the ending to Requiem for Immortals. I know they are technically epilogues, but they feel so meaty and so important to the books that I think they complete the story. If you loved Requiem for Immortals, you need to read Love is Not Nothing and the same with the Brutal stories. The Brutal Lie short is an easy five stars. I actually looked-up what I rated Love is Not Nothing when I first read it -4.50 stars- and I don’t know what I was thinking. I’d now give that short 6 stars if I could, I love it that much.
While it may be a surprise, but I absolutely recommend this collection for Lee Winter fans:) The only issue is that if you have not read Winter’s books yet, you really should read them and use this as a companion book. Reading most of these shorts, completely on their own, would not have the same emotional impact that combining them with her full length books have.
“Sliced Ice” is an anthology that contains 10 of Lee Winter’s short stories. All but one are stories with characters from Winter’s previously published books. “The Friend” is a short story that was part of another anthology from YLVA.
I think for any fan of Winter, this is a must-read. But only if you’ve read The Brutal Truth, Breaking Character, The Red Files, Under Your Skin and finally Requiem for Immortals because if not, these would be spoiling you to some great stories. There’s a short story based on a character from “Hotel Queens” as well, however, it’s a side character and doesn’t spoil the book in any way.
This is especially fun because the stories either gives extra insight on a character or gives us more of a happy ending.
I received an ARC from Ylva Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
If you haven't read Lee Winter's books, read them because you can't say you read lesfic without reading her books. Winter is the writer of ice queens and believe me when I say her books are top-notch.
Sliced Ice is a collection of short stories that should be read after her full-length novels as the short stories feature characters from books like The Brutal Truth, Breaking Character, Hotel Queens, Requiem for Immortals and The Red Files, etc. Most of the short stories aren't exactly new as they are either part of anthologies or have been made available to her newsletter subscribers like me. Only one of them, featuring the characters from Hotel Queens, is new. But it's still fun to have them all compiled in a single book.
Reading the short stories bring back memories that make me want to re-read her best works all over again, in particular, two of my favourite lesfics - The Brutal Truth and Breaking Character. It also makes me extremely excited for The Awkward Truth that is set to come out in November 2021.
Also, for those interested, Winter has a Pinterest of fantasy castings, which I usually love to check out so that I can put faces to the characters I love so much. (If the link doesn't work, just google Lee Winter, Pinterest.)

First I have to say, I'm a fan of Lee Winter and her fantastic stories.
I'm still not a big fan of short stories, I love novels much more where I can really dive into the stories. But still, Lee Winter's short stories were a must-read for me.
These stories are set in Lee Winter's published universe, and most of the characters I already knew, but it's always nice to run into old friends. I felt right at home. The only thing I would have preferred is if there would have been a few more new stories, like "Number Five" with the CEO sex fantasies goddess Monique.
Sliced Ice is the perfect title for this anthology and is a good introduction to Lee Winter's ice queen mecca if you haven't read anything by her before. Lee writes humorous, suspenseful, emotional, hot, and exciting stories that go to the heart.
I have loved every single story, her writing style is stunning, and she always makes me laugh. Winter is a master when it comes to ice queens and the women who make them melt.
All in all, a wonderful collection of short stories, perfect to consume slice by slice on a hot summer day, chilling in a lounge chair. And in these hot temperatures, an ice queen is always good for cooling off - although it usually doesn't last long, which is not what we want anyway.
Highly recommended to all, a fantastic collection to fall back on whenever you need a little shot of Lee Winter. My rating 4.75 Thanks to Ylva for receiving an ARC for an honest review.
Tipsy lizard for the win! Okay, that’s not what this book is about but I loved this sentence and just had to use it.
Sliced Ice is a collection of ten short stories, displaying every facet of Lee Winter’s talent: comedy, banter, steamy scenes… Even though they weren’t written specifically as a collection, they work really well together, completing and balancing one another.
Almost all these stories were already available, either in collections or as freebies to subscribers to Lee Winter’s mailing list (if you’re not a subscriber yet, give it a try, it’s a good one), but having them together is really nice. And getting more time with characters from books you’ve loved is always a treat. Get ready for Elena and Maddie from The Brutal Truth, Bess and Summer from Breaking Character, Natalya and Allison from Requiem for Immortals, Catherine and Lauren from The Red Files, as well as side characters like Cynthia and Suze from Under Your Skin, and – cherry on the cake – Winter’s First-Class Villains upstaging each other. And if you loved Monique Carson in Hotel Queens, the one brand new story is for you. With Monique being one of the main characters, you wouldn’t be wrong to expect it to be hot. Like really really hot.
If you’re impatiently looking forward to Lee Winter’s next book, The Awkward Truth, these should tide you over till it’s released.
I received a copy from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
A wonderful collection of short stories that showcase Lee Winter's writing prowess.
Everyone who loves lesfic has heard of Lee Winter. Her popularity (especially in writing ice queens) is definitely well-deserved because of her excellent writing skills and exciting storytelling.
I've read almost all her short stories included in the book since I subscribe to her newsletter, but they were still a joy to read again. Fans of The Brutal Truth will definitely appreciate the three related stories included in the book. It's great to binge read them in the correct sequence.
Her short stories can definitely stand on their own, but they would definitely tempt you to pick the related books up if you haven't read them yet. This is the perfect book for Lee Winter fans, as well as those who want to get into her writing! :)
An ARC was given in exchange for an honest review.
What could improve on the original fabulous Ice Queens we've come to love, fear and respect? These same ice queens voiced by the fabulous Angela Dawe. Some of these short stories I've read before and some were new to me, especially the one where four queens face off against each other during an airport layover. That one might have been my favourite if I only read this book. Listening to Dawe as Elena in an extremely hot scene in The Brutal Lie made it my personal favourite for obvious heated reasons.
Looking forward to reading Felicity's story in The Awkward Truth now that I have remembered who she was thanks to this collection.
This is a collection of ten short stories by Lee Winter, all based on different characters from her books. Ms. Winter is an expert in writing ice queens and there’s always one present in her books, hence the title. Some of these works have been published before in compilations or as part of this author’s newsletter gifts but for Ms. Winter’s fans it’s nice to have them all together in one book.
Five Times Felicity Met Elena, features Felicity Simmons, a talented lawyer with no future in her current firm, as she meets media mogul Elena Bartell (from The Brutal Truth). This is an intriguing prequel to The Awkward Truth, which is going to be released in November 2021, and takes place during the last half of The Brutal Truth.
In Aliens if New York, Australian journalist and blogger Maddie Grey is presenting a book with a collection of her homesick blog posts. Will her secret lover and media mogul Elena Bartell attend the event? Sequel to The Brutal Truth.
The Brutal Lie (also a sequel to The Brutal Truth) shows sexy times between Maddie and Elena interrupted by the media smear campaign of Emmanuelle Lecoq, who’s planning revenge on Elena. But Emmanuelle should know better than provoke the wrath of Elena…
Skye Storm’s Invite Absolutely Everyone Ultimate Pool Party features a crazy party thrown by Summer Hayes’s parents (from Lee Winter’s Breaking Character) and what happens when closeted lovers Summer and Elizabeth attend it together.
The Friend is the most atypical story of this compilation which was originally released in Ylva Publishing’s Language of Love – A Flirty, Festive Anthology. It features store manager Dani and her secret lover having to endure an uncomfortable Christmas party with Dani’s intimidating Great-Aunt Jean. Great story about conflicting family dynamics focusing on an Australian Christmas summer celebration inspired by English traditions.
In Number Five, Hotel Queens fans are in for a surprise! Monique Carson – a secondary character from Hotel Queens – finds that pleasing a very unexpected client is more than what she bargained for…
Flashbang (Red Files # 1.5) picks up a few weeks after The Red Files finishes and catches up with the lives of Lauren and Catherine at an LA celebrity party. Very hot and sexy.
When DC met Iowa is set in The Red Files universe and tells the story of how Iowa airplane mechanic Suze and DC economy journalist Cynthia meet during Lauren and Catherine’s wedding party. Lee Winter’s sarcasm at its best.
First Class Villains show an accidental meeting between cellist Natalya Tsvetnenko (Requiem for Immortals), British actress Grace Christie-Oberon (Breaking Character), former fashion magazine editor Emmanuelle Lecoq (The Brutal Truth), and the enigmatic Michelle Hastings (The Red Files) in a first-class lounge at Heathrow Airport. They all get into a heated discussion on who’s the worst villain of them all.
Love is not nothing (Requiem # 1.5) is the sequel to Requiem for Immortals and explores how the relationship between Natalya and Alison develops five years after their initial meeting. Sexy and with an unexpected twist.
As in any compilation, some stories are better than others but, despite that, they all show Ms. Winter’s talent and sharp wit. Some are sexy, others romantic, others funny, and others contemplative. There’s a story for everyone here. Ms. Winter’s fans won’t be disappointed. However, I wouldn’t recommend reading this if you haven’t read at least a couple of Ms. Winter’s works as you are going to miss a lot without the context. 4 stars.
Even though I knew some of these stories I loved reading them. I haven’t read all of Winter’s books yet and these stories make me look forward to reading those books too. But I think that I’ll start with reading the ones I already know again before moving on to the new ones. Recommend, 5 stars.
Update: Review of the audiobook version. The gift of having all of these short stories on audiobook is truly indescribable. Lee Winter's books are some of the best in lesfic and in each of these short stories, we get wonderful glimpses into the current or future lives of some of our favorite ice queens. Lee Winter said she believes this may be Angela Dawe's best work and I can't disagree. What I loved the most is how Dawe revisited some of the characters that she previously voiced and tweaked them. Like Maddie from The Brutal Truth. Her voice has a lower register and the Aussie accent is more restrained. Ridiculously sexy. Wow. When DC Met Iowa. OMG. Hilarious and just perfect. I mean, really. Number Five? First-Class Villains? I could go on and on about the deliciousness of every single one but I'd run out of space. I do want to specifically mention Love is Not Nothing because it is a short story that takes place after Requiem for Immortals, an audiobook of Winter's that Dawe didn't narrate. Dawe didn't attempt to do Requiem's voice with an Aussie accent here which was a solid choice. This was an interpretation of the character all her own. She brilliantly captured the menacing, panther-like, sexually charged presence of Natalya/Requiem. It was a thrill to get her take on it. And there was a completely new voice for Alison that I've not heard Dawe do before! For those of us that respect Winter's choice to find an Aussie narrator for the audiobook, it was such a treat to hear Dawe's performance of the short. Absolutely terrific! As much as I cursed Audible for the too-delayed release, it was 1000 percent worth the wait!
Review of the ebook from July 2021: Anyone who reads my reviews knows that I consider Lee Winter to be a lesbian writing god. I freely admit it and have told her as much. This short story collection is a must for fans of her work. I thought that I'd only have one new one to read in this collection, but it turned out to be two. The Friend was included in a Christmas anthology called Language of Love that I own, but hadn't yet read (saving that for this holiday season) and Number Five is the highly anticipated short from the Hotel Queens universe. Both were wonderfully satisfying. It always strikes me that no matter what Winter writes, there's always "more" to it than the average story. She delves deeper, invokes the emotion from deep within. And then there's the humor. The pain. The longing. The insight. The love. And lord - the sex. These short stories should be read after the original novels from which these characters are based - which is some of the best lesbian fiction available. Sometimes these give us wonderful ends to stories, at other times a glimpse months or years ahead. Others might be based on supporting characters from a beloved work that gives us just a little bit more of worlds we can't get enough of. One of my absolute favorites in this collection is the Book of Blogs my Maddie Grey included with the Aliens of New York short. Each blog post that Maddie writes throughout the Brutal Truth is included and they truly showcase Winter's talent. Breathtakingly beautiful writing there. The cover is so strong that I think I need it for my shelves. And I will definitely be owning the forthcoming audiobook of this collection narrated by the legendary Angela Dawe. Definitely recommend this one, folks. Love having all of these short stories in one place.
An ARC copy was given to me by YLVA for a honest review.
This stories are absolutly "must have" for fans of Lee Winter. I really enjoyed this book because, I get to know the characters better. Sometime it was story before book, sometimes after the book. I really like when author writes something like that. My two favourite stories were from "Breaking Character" and Hotel Queens.

Reading and re-reading these short is just so wonderful. Lee Winter is the best ice queen author out there and this collection just underlines that.
Lots of these shorts are available in other places but it’s great to have them together and just relive all the glory of Winter’s ice queens. The short for Hotel Queens is new and it’s just fabulous, so is anything else Winter writes so no surprises here.
Some of the shorts are actually more epilogues, true endings to the books. As a Winter fan, which any lesfic reader should be, you would probably already be aware of that.
Anyway the only travesty would be you not being able to read this collection because you haven’t read the full length novels, get to it already!
To say this book is fantastic would be an understatement. There is absolutely nothing not to love about this anthology! There are ten lovely stories from Ms Winter’s most beloved tales. From The Brutal Truth, Requiem for Immortals, Breaking Character and more, these stories are sure to delight. Of course The Brutal Truth being my all-time favourite book, I think I loved these the best but none of them are less than…well, wonderful lol! I just cannot stress enough how perfect this book is and if you miss it, you will regret it! If you only read one book this year, make it this one!!!
The Queen of Ice Queen stories strikes again. Romances with crisp writing and heat make up this anthology of short stories featuring ice queens and foes from Ms. Winter's books. Enough said. Read and enjoy them then, if you haven't yet, read the original books - Breaking Character, The Brutal Truth and Hotel Queens are among my favorites. Read without pause to the end. Highly recommend.
I rec'd an ARC through Ylva Publishing and this a voluntary and unbiased review.
I have read almost all of these before, some a few times, so it was no hardship to go through them again. I absolutely adore Lee Winter and these shorts about some of my favourite lesfic couples was just what I needed this summer.
I will admit this up front that I am a huge Lee Winter fan. No one writes a better Ice Queen romance than Ms Winter, in my opinion, or the most sensual, sizzling sex scenes. I have read all of her books so this collection of short stories containing characters from her novels peaked my interest. I love when authors give us an after the happily ever after view of main characters or takes a secondary character on an adventure. There are just some characters you want to read more about. We begin in the Elena universe from The Brutal Truth. How Elena influenced Felicity, a young lawyer working hard to be a partner by the time she is thirty. Next we are with Maddie as she waits to appear at her book launch in the bookstore at Elena’s new corporate building. Then onto the blogs written by Maddie which caught Elena’s attention and are now a highly regarded book. I want to highlight this chapter as the blogs are exceptionally well written by Ms Winter. Lastly, we end with Elena being outed by her rival in the fashion magazine business. Actress Summer Storm’s mother Skye throws one hell of an annual pool party for Hollywood movie stars and industry workers. Everyone is allowed to let their hair down and be who they really are. Even Summer’s older British girlfriend Elizabeth relaxes for awhile. Dani brings her “friend” home for the holidays and her surly aunt stays true to form. Hotel Queens gives us the secondary character Monique Carson as a sex fantasy expert who works out of the Duxton Hotel. The next two stories are from The Red Files and Under Your Skin. We meet the acerbic ice queen Catherine and Lauren before they leave the fluff of California for the political news capital of DC. And the last two stories focus on Natalya, the cello playing assassin from Requiem for Mortals.
Sliced Ice is a clever title for this collection but even better is the front cover blurb, Delicious Short-Story Sequels. It is everything delicious and tasty you expect from Lee Winter and she serves it with panache. 5⭐️
Lee Winter has combined ten of her famously wonderful short stories about her iciest queen characters in one amazing collection for our enjoyment!
If you are a fan of Lee’s, as I am, you will have probably encountered all the wonderful characters in these short stories and may have even read some of them before, but I adore having them all in one place where I can dip in and out of snippets with some of the most amazing women!
That being said, if you haven’t read any of Lee Winter’s stories and you want a taste of her fabulous stories and amazing characters then this is the book for you! Lee is such a talented writer, who creates engaging stories and unforgettable characters. I promise this book will not disappoint and it will leave you with a hunger to read the novels which introduce these characters in more detail.
It was amazing with each short story I read, or re-read and I was completely in love with the characters all over again. I can’t recommend this collection enough and don’t ask me to pick a favourite story from the collection because it is literally impossible!
These short story sequels were *so* much fun! I’m not sure which one(s) I loved the most - but I think it was (in order), the Vegas sex worker, and Love Is Not Nothing.
I have really been looking forward to reading Sliced Ice by Lee Winter, and I’m so glad it is finally in my possession. This is a collection of short stories that Ms. Winter has written over the years. A few have appeared in other anthologies while others have been given out to her fans online. Most of the stories are about characters we have come to know and like (or love) from her best-selling novels. At least one is an original tale with all new characters.
I have to admit I’ve already read most of these stories with the exception of one brand new story based on a secondary character from Hotel Queens. That didn’t stop me from reading each and every one again with joy. My favorite ice queens, and the people who have melted their hearts are in some of these tales. We get a glimpse into how these characters are doing once the novel ends or in a few cases before or during the book. These stories will excite, entertain, and tug at your heart. This collection is in my favorites, and will be a book I’ll reach for again and again.
I received an ARC from Ylva Publishing for an honest review.
I enjoyed revisiting the characters fro Lee Winter’s books simply because the characters are so memorable. You feel like they’re friends you love and want to keep. The description of the Christmas lunch in ‘The Friend’ brought back happy childhood memories. And I admit to shedding a tear in that story so I guess I’m a duffer, too. 😀. Nice catch-ups.
A before and some afters for some of Winter's characters
SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: Per the rules on Jae's personal site, short stories don't qualify for the contest. There would be many covered if they were allowed.
I first got this book through KU, but then Ylva made it a freebie, so I lucked out. I read all of the books that pertained to the characters beforehand because I wanted to know who they were when I read about them in it. I feel that I did the right thing because I got more enjoyment out of the stories that way. I think First-Class Villains is my favorite, but reading more about Requiem is always good. If you have loved her novels, you'll love this book too.
This was a nice collection of short stories from various Lee Winter novels. Loved the narrator and it was nice to catch up with some characters and gain a few more insights. I particularly loved the Felicity one.
