I look at my daughter. My darling girl. I remember her tiny hand in mine, her first smile. I recall her tears when she’d tumble over, healed instantly with a band-aid and a little kiss. I have to keep her safe. Even if it means someone else gets hurt…
In the pretty, privileged college town of Milford, New Hampshire, everyone is friendly, everything is safe. And on this cold autumn day, as red and yellow leaves begin to fall from the trees, and everyone wraps up for the first time, it would be easy to believe nothing bad could ever happen here.
Until a screech of tires is heard, a thud, a child’s scream. The crash that sees Jenna’s six-year-old daughter Amy Rose being hit by a car driven by seventeen-year-old Maddie.
Maddie’s mother, Ellen—a college professor with a warm, approachable reputation—insists it must have been an accident. Her daughter is always safe on the road—and she’s vulnerable herself.
But as Amy Rose lies unconscious in hospital, the town begins to take sides. With Ellen, who just wants to defend her daughter. Or with Jenna, a single mother with a past, whose child hovers between life and death…
The truth is that both mothers have secrets they’re trying to keep. And, with Amy Rose’s life hanging in the balance, one of them will stop at nothing to protect the person she loves—her daughter.
An incredible, powerfully emotional and heartbreaking read, with a dilemma that will make everyone wonder what they would do, in either mother’s shoes. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Jojo Moyes and Diane Chamberlain.

EXCERPT: Glancing at Amy Rose lying so still, I reach over and take her hand; it feels so tiny and lifeless, her skin dry and papery. Gently I press her fingers between mine, as if I can imbue her with my strength, my vitality. I can almost imagine her eyes opening as she smiles sleepily at me.
Hey, Mama. What are you doing here?
Hey, baby girl. You had such a big sleep.
Did I dream?
You had the best dreams, sweetheart. The very best dreams.
A choked sound escapes me, something far too close to a sob. I can picture it so perfectly; I can't believe it's not real, that it's not going to happen in just a few seconds. Every morning as she sits tangle-haired before her bowl of Cheerios, Amy Rose asks me if she dreamed the night before.
It's become a thing between us; I tell her all about the dreams she had. I make up stories about ice-cream castles and fairies with sparkly wings, and she listens, rapt, and she always wants more.
I want to tell her about her dreams now. You flew up to heaven on your sparkly wings and then you came back, baby girl, and you had such stories to tell! Up there in the sky, you saw everything there ever was - the Great Wall of China, the lions in Africa, and that big red rock in Australia you think is so cool. You saw it all, and then came back to tell me about it.
Please come back, Amy Rose, I plead silently. Please come back and tell me all about it.

MY THOUGHTS: Am I a masochist? Whenever I pick up a Kate Hewitt book, I know that I am about to have my heart shredded into tiny little pieces; but I keep on doing it.
Hewitt will wring every possible emotion from you as you read this heart-wrenching story. Each and every copy of it should come with its own extra large, extra absorbent, box of tissues.
Two mothers, both in desperate situations, are battling head to head over an accident that has critically damaged both their daughters. My Daughter's Mistake is told from the points of view of the two mothers, Jenna - mother of the beautiful six year old Amy Rose; and Ellen - mother of the vulnerable Maddy.
My Daughter's Mistake is the story of two families torn apart by one tragedy. Like any tragedy, this doesn't stop with just those in the accident. Hewitt explores how the effects ripple outwards, affecting every member of the families and beyond.
As always in her books, Hewitt presents us with a situation that could befall any of us. Her characters are very real and I could not help but experience all the emotions of the characters - I seesawed in my sympathy between Jenna and Ellen - but I also felt their love, their loss, their fear and their anger. A master of family dynamics, Hewitt also involves the fathers, the siblings, and grandparents, friends and work colleagues in a story that will leave you emotionally drained but satisfied.

Ellen’s daughter Maddie is involved in a car accident where she hits a 6-year-old child, Amy Rose, causing a severe traumatic brain injury from which the child may not recover. From the start, it is clear there are discrepancies between the story Maddie is telling the police and her parents and the truth. Maddie suffers from an eating disorder and has issues with self-harming, and her mother is fiercely protective of her. Amy Rose’s mother, Jenna, is from the other side of the tracks, and has struggled to make ends meet her entire life. She faces accusations that she left her daughter unattended for a minute or two when the accident occurred.
This story has elements of a juicy family drama. I was riveted by the opening hook. I have read several books by this author before and highly enjoyed them. This one I wound up enjoying but it probably wasn’t my very favorite as far as her books go because I felt the middle section had some slow spots and I wasn’t entirely satisfied by the ending.
The unthinkable happens - your teenage daughter who should be at home calls you crying saying “mom, please come.” There’s been a horrible car accident involving a 6 year old little girl and your daughter seems to be involved somehow. This book told from 2 different moms POV’s. It was packed with lots of gut wrenching scenes. I’m not even sure what I would do in a case like this. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.
Sadly, Amy Rose has been struck by a car and is in a medically induced coma. Maddie is the teen driver that struck Amy Rose. In this emotional story of two mothers, secrets and guilt rise to the fore after this tragic accident.
Jenna, Amy Rose's mother, and Ellen, Maddie's mother, could not be more different. Ellen is a college professor, and quite happily married. Conversely, Jenna is a single mother with an uncertain past. While Jenna is desperate for Amy Rose to recover, Ellen has motherly concerns herself. Things are not quite right with Maddie and Ellen worries that this accident could destroy the teen's already fragile existence. How can both Ellen and Jenna fight for their daughters amidst these trying times?
This story is certain to bring out powerful emotions to any reader, as this compelling read did with me. While the drama each mother was experiencing was overwhelming, and despite their differences, things did begin to interconnect. This pulled me even deeper into an already gripping read, bringing a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes more than once. Kate Hewitt has a knack for placing her readers into the driver's seat thus exposing a rawness that is felt deep within. My Daughter's Mistake brings me to an even dozen reads by this fabulous author leaving me quite keen for upcoming books by her.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Jenna doesn't know what hit her when her daughter is hit by a car. She's beside herself when Amy Rose is taken to the hospital because she is unresponsive. Ellen is the mother of a seventeen year old daughter, Maddie that hit the little girl. They are both bad and good mothers. They are both suffering for different reasons. They lash out at each other but will their hatred win? This book was fast paced and an incredible adrenal rush. The characters were believable. The author took the time to know them and write with authority. Unputdownable is what this book is.
Takes place in Milford, New Hampshire, a definite split between the ‘townies’ and ‘gowns’. A terrible accident that tears 2 very different families apart with lies and grief. One word about sums it up. Teenagers. Not too much of a mystery to figure out the truth from the lies. Moral of story … let go of the anger!
I think every parent worries when they get that call from their child asking them to come, especially when they are just beginning to drive. This is what happens to Ellen, a college professor in the small, idyllic town of Milford. She gets a call from her seventeen year old daughter, Maddie that she needs her. Ellen arrives at the scene to see a young girl being taken away in an ambulance, and Maddie's car up on the curb. Maddie is sitting on the side of the road, and admits she hit the little girl, who ran out in front of her. Six year old May Rose, is rushed to the hospital with head trauma. My Daughter's Mistake is told from the points of view of the two mothers, Jenna, a single mother of the beautiful six year old Amy Rose; and Ellen - mother of the vulnerable Maddy. This is the story of two families torn apart by this tragic accident.
Kate Hewitt's book is heartbreaking, especially as it is something that could happen to any family. The characters are real and relatable, and I could feel what both of these families were going through. I felt sick for Jenna and what she was going through, yet Ellen was also heartsick for her daughter and fearful about what would happen.
Jenna's and Ellen's lives couldn't have been more different, but in a moment, what they now have in common is that they would do anything to protect their child. All the secondary characters play a role, siblings, other parents, as well an the town gossips. Everyone seems to take a side. Jenna was a great character. She is flawed, but is loyal and loving and not afraid to accept responsibility, even if she shouldn't. I really enjoyed this well-written book. The story was tense, and I wasn't sure what would happen next. Both mother's have secrets that I wondered about. The backstories added much to the plot and gave insight into what might happen next. Kate Hewitt included themes of alcoholism, abuse, mental health issues, anorexia, suicide and criminality. This is a novel I definitely recommend.
My Daughter's Mistake is told from the point of view of two mothers. Ellen, whose daughter has crashed her car and run a young girl over in the process and Jenna, whose daughter is the young girl who has been hurt. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that for both women, this isn't a straightforward accident and both sides seem to be hiding things. The more that we learn about Jenna and Ellen's lives we see that everything is far from perfect for either of them. While this is a story about an accident and the aftermath, it's also about the lives people lead and the things that they do to try and protect themselves and the ones that they love. Jenna has spent her life keeping people distant, which is hardly surprising when we learn of all that she has faced as she grew up. For Ellen, it's been about the differences between the life she knew growing up in an academic environment and the world that her husband grew up in. Parts of this book are horrifying. The idea that you might have to move to a different hospital because your insurance won't cover the treatment, or worry about being sued is just unimaginable. The idea of dealing with a child that might not recover from such a serious accident and be worrying about how you might pay for their treatment. This was a gripping read and although I had an idea of what had happened at the accident (which I was right about) I still couldn't put it down until I'd read it all. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Heartbreaking, Engrossing, and Life Changing. This is a book that every parent of a teenager should read along with the teenager. What a wonderful way have a discussion with their teenager about touchy subjects such as harming oneself, drugs, telling the truth and being a part of the family unit. What can happen when poor choices are made.
A horrible car accident. A six year old girl is in a coma fighting for her life. A devastated teenage girl, the driver of the car and her family. The story of how these two dysfunctional families found their way through this sad event and reclaimed their lives.
It is a story of families, feelings, anger, grief, forgiveness and guilt. A story of people taking a long look at their lives and taking steps to heal themselves and their families.
I know that this story and the events described within, the characters, the problems and the social topics revealed will stay with me for a long time. I will not soon forget this story. I recommend this book.
Thanks to Kate Hewitt, Bookouture, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy of the book for my honest review.
I recently started reading another title by Hewitt and was thinking...."man this author can write an emotionally charged story" and why does her name look so familiar??
After digging I realized I read this title back in 21 and forgot to write my review, life I guess got a little hectic. But after reading the title I immediately remembered this story and how it absolutely wrecked my heart As a mother myself it really had me questioning to what ends I would go for my own children.
It was a well-crafted story that tugged at my heartstrings multiple times. The alternating points of view between these two mothers was perfect to keep you engaged.
This amazing book managed to make me cry and feel incredibly uplifted both at the same time! I found this such a wonderful book, despite tragedy the characters learn to lift their heads, look around them and realise everything has to change, and they need to be the ones who change it. This is a tough read at times and quite harrowing, but I absolutely loved the inspiration of both Jenna and Ellen's evolution, how they turned everything around and found kindness, positivity and forgiveness - a beautiful, tough but amazing book, I loved it.
My Daughter's Mistake is a story that has chapters alternating between Jenna and Ellen. Two mothers with different lifestyles of which an accident brings their lives crashing together.
This was such a heart wrenching read. I had so much empathy for both these women and what they were going through. The story focuses more on these two characters and how they try and cope with what is currently going on. I could feel the emotions from both these women washing over me. Whilst it makes for an emotional read, by the end it was also heartwarming and uplifting.
An emotional page turner that had me gripped to every page.
This book made me angry, sad, and tired. I really wanted to just shake Maddie. But it was a story I had a hard time putting down. I’d highly recommend it!
I think everyone knows by now how much of a Kate Hewitt fan I am. There is just something about her writing that lends an air of realism to her stories whether it be through her characterization, the real life struggles people can go through and the emotional turmoil or just from the storyline in general and all of the baggage that comes with it. In turn you get this wonderfully written book with a story you want to dive deep in with relatable characters you can’t help but want to love and hug. My Daughter’s Mistake encompasses all of these things right from the first page and once again Hewitt’s newest book is going to be another five star read for me.
Jenna Miller and Ellen Wilkinson couldn’t be any more different than night and day. Ellen, her husband and their children live in one of the better areas of Milford, New Hampshire while Jenna and her daughter live in a more run down part of town. Money is always a struggle, but Jenna does her best to raise her precious six year old daughter, Amy Rose. I would say that the only thing that Ellen and Jenna have in common is the love that they have for their child(ren) and the need to protect them at all costs.
Things come to a head when Amy Rose is struck by a car driven by Maddie Wilkinson, Ellen’s seventeen year old daughter. But, is there more to the story than Ellen and Jenna are saying? What else could they be hiding and is this accident more than anyone even realizes?
Kate Hewitt has taken on some major topics in this story with two families suffering and we as the reader are pulled in both directions where we can be empathetic to both families at the same time. Not only is there an accident, but there’s also a storyline of self harm and an eating disorder and while I wouldn’t say it takes center stage, it is relevant to the story. Through all of this though, Hewitt really hits home on the power of forgiveness and of finding purpose within yourself.
My Daughter’s Mistake is another book that I will be adding to my “for keep” pile on my bookcase to be read over and over again.
Holy cow, this book was incredible! I was completely sucked in from the very beginning to the very end and I flew through it in two days. I love how it opened, it jumped right into the story without much buildup. Great way to capture the reader’s attention! The storylines and characters were compelling and intriguing, the writing was easy and fluid, and the unexpected twists and turns were just perfect. I am drawn to books about families and the issues they are faced with, and this book fits that category to a T. I couldn’t help but wonder how I would handle some of the situations and also couldn’t help but judge and question some of the decisions that were made by the characters. The characters, their personalities, and their relationships with one another were so compelling to read about. The topics are ones that could very well happen to anyone (but hopefully won’t), and it was so emotional to read how everyone responded and reacted. There was so much touched upon in this book, it is so powerful and so REAL. I really really liked this book and it is one that will stay with me for a long time. I am a big fan of this author and she once again has written a book that is so emotional yet wonderful. Thank you Kate Hewitt!
I enjoyed this book and would read books from this author again. Ellen’s daughter, Maddie knocks down six year old Amy Rose to the horror of her mother Jenna. What follows is the impact on all of the people involved and the impact to their relationships. The book is written, in alternating chapters, from the POV of the mothers. I liked how each mother questions their responses and behaviours as the situation unfolds. It did make me cry as the whole situation was realistic this wasn’t a happy ever ending story as it’s often not in real life. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. #MyDaughtersMistake #NetGalley
I will read anything by this author and usually I have to disregard all other responsibilities so that I can finish the book! I enjoy that she takes social issues and shows both sides behind the story. In this story, there is a car accident that involves a teenage girl and a six year old. The story is told from the perspective of both moms who are struggling with the emotions behind the accident. The author has hit it out of the park again with this book. There is a little bit of swearing in the book.
Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.
Well written, and a lot of emotion put into the characters. Kinda went the route I thought it would but not what I expected in the ending in a good way. The writing and story line draw you in and very easy to follow and enjoy reading.
Thanks t the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
Review for 'My Daughter's Mistake' by Kate Hewitt.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Kate Hewitt, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 27th September 2021.
This is the first book I have read by this author. It most certainly won't be the last.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Jojo Moyes and Diane Chamberlain.' I am a fan of all three of these authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 29 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Milford, New Hampshire, USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonists are Ellen and Jenna. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.
'My Daughter's Mistake' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Kate discusses/includes anorexia, self harming
WOW!!!! What can I say?!?! One thing I have got to say before getting into my review is clear your schedules and grab the tissues as you will need them!!!
This book is beautifully written with vivid descriptions setting the picture perfectly in the readers mind. The title, description and cover works perfectly with the storyline.
This book is devastatingly heartbreaking and beautiful. It is an absolute rollercoaster rider of emotions filled with heartbreak, family, love, loss, secrets, friendship, forgiveness and so much more. It is a mother's absolute worse nightmare whether you are standing by Jenna or Ellen and reading this book really does make you feel that you are standing with them and going through their pain and suffering. While you are reading this you are going through a journey of love and loss, heartbreak and forgiveness. It shows the effects of what one mistake made in one moment can do and how life can change in the blink of an eye. You need to clear your schedules and get the tissues at the ready because you will not be able to put this book down and it had me in tears by the end and I do not cry easily!!!
The characters are strong, realistic and I became completely invested in bith Jenna and Ellen. I felt each if their pain, anger, sorrow and joy. My heart broke for each of them who went through so much. Although it was mainly through Jenna and Ellen's eyes that the story unfolds there are so many other characters that I bonded with. My heart went out to Maddie who was clearly struggling with mental health which she was struggling with along with being at the tender age of seventeen and being in love. Although I did feel for her I also felt like screaming at her on many occasions and wish she would just understand what her mum was going through. I felt Brian was tough in occasions but I also felt for him as it can't be easy being a Dad in this situation. I really felt for William who had so much going on at such a young age and it was sad to see how easily it is to "neglect" an "easy" child when you have another who is going through so much and it was really sad seeing him pushed from pillar to post. William is such a brave young boy and as a mum I think that Brian and Ellen were blessed to have him standing so strong, helping and worrying about Maddie where he could easily have gone the opposite way with his behaviour and started kicking out. Onto Jenna and her family. It was beautiful to be able to watch the transformation in Jenna from wanting to lash out at anyone and everyone to the person she became at the end. I couldn't stand her mother and really think she was one of the most selfish people I have ever "met", consistently feeling sorry for herself at the neglect of her children. I truly believe if she had been a better mother then Sam would have had a much better life and he was another character my heart broke for. Although heartbreaking it was lovely to see how all characters had grown from beginning to end.
Congratulations Kate on an absolutely gorgeous, heartbreaking beautiful book!!! I am looking forward to reading more of your previous and future books. I would absolutely love to see this turned into a movie!!! Welcome to my favourite author list and here's to your next success 🥂
Overall an absolutely unputdownable, addictive and compelling devastatingly beautiful heartbreaking book!!!
Genres covered in this book include Suspense, Psychological Thriller, Coming-Of-Age Story, Noir Fiction and Domestic Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Jodi Picoult, Jojo Moyes, Debbie Macomber, Nicholas Sparks, Diane Chamberlain and anyone who loves a tear jerker.

A story that broke my heart many times over when a road accident brought daughters of two mothers into a crisis. One was driving the car and the other got knocked down.
And the author made my heart swing like a pendulum as I read the life stories of both of these daughters through the eyes of the mothers
None of them had it easy when each chapter unfurled truth about their lives. My heart definitely got a tough workout while reading this.
Each character was real caught in a situation that was not intentional. I couldn't help but emphasize and feel their helplessness, fear, and guilt. Along with anger.
But fear not, there was hope and forgiveness entwined with convenient solutions.
A book that explored family dynamics in tough situations of life. Well worth the time and love spent on it.
Let me just say that this book had the structure of a typical lifetime movie. Not a bad thing by any means. However, the author’s way of writing putting you in the perspective of two women who wanted to embody being the “perfect” mom was beautifully done. I’m not kidding. There were times I wanted to jump in the book and punch some characters *coughs* Ellen, but I ended up feeling for these characters HARD. Jenna in particular. She reminds you that we’re all human, and depending on the circumstances you can let your anger pull you down, or you can simply let it go. I couldn’t imagine being in the position of either mom in this story, or fathom what it takes to parent the “right” way. Kate Hewitt, you acknowledged some HEAVY topics and (in my opinion) executed it with grace. I seriously couldn’t put this book down, and can already tell it will be one I think about for a while.
This book was good, but could’ve been better. The reason why Amy Rose was ran over fell flat to me. There was so much build up to only have a slight eye roll type of twist. The mothers emotional growth throughout the book was inspiring. The way Kate Hewitt ended the book and wrapped everything up in a nice bow was my favorite part. No unanswered questions and you could see the growth in all the characters, not just the mothers. Overall, a good read and would recommend for people who like contemporary fiction.
This book happened to catch my eye in the library and I'm really glad I picked it up. It was a very gripping story and I thoroughly enjoyed every page. I've already ordered a second book by this author for my Kindle as I'll definitely read more by Kate Hewitt.
