Crashlanding on an uncontacted world was not part of my plan for today. Forty years ago, my parents discovered intelligent life on y-7139-3, known by its inhabitants as Earth. Because they were on the cusp of developing advanced space travel, our Ministry of Culture set up Horizon Station, a permanent observation post above Earth camouflaged as an asteroid caught in the planet’s orbit, to observe this small window in a culture’s history without interference. Having completed my education on our native planet of Keeɾey, I am returning to Horizon Station, the place I consider home, with my first research grant. My goal is to learn about Earth’s “Powered”, all individuals under the age of thirty who display extraordinary abilities. It is essential we get our ship repaired and away from the humans before we are detected. But since I’m stuck planetside, can it really hurt to do a little research while I’m looking for the parts we need to repair the ship?

I had a great plan: work as an investigative journalist, write about issues important to the Powered, and use that opportunity to interface between the Powered and non-Powered communities. It was all going according to plan… until it wasn’t. I’ve always had the ability to feel the emotions of others, but recently my Powers are intensifying, and these new aspects are completely out of my control! Making the situation worse, I will be turning thirty soon, and my personal life is non-existent! This is not part of the plan! When Alastair, my telepathic cat and lifelong companion, suggests that I need some time to meditate, I head for the Sierras with my best friend for the weekend. It’s a great opportunity to relax and get my head in the right place. And I need to go for my job anyway — another of my Powered friends has been dealing with an anti-Powered group and may need my help.
