Lucinda Darby never dreamed that she would accidentally climb into the wrong bed during her seduction when she accepted a wicked dare! After one night of passion with Alexander, the Earl of Chisholm, Lucinda finds herself more than attracted to Alexander. Still, she is wary of involving herself too deeply as the earl is a right rogue who does not believe in attachments. Lucinda, however, will turn his world upside down as they become entangled in a tempestuous love affair.
Alyssa Clarke writes steamy Regency Historical Romances featuring swoon-worthy heroes and sassy, sometimes unconventional heroines! Her debut novel, Love Me, If You Dare, came to her in a dream as a hot, fun enemy to lover romance where she played the leading lady who fell in love with a duke who looked remarkably like Henry Cavill.
When not writing, Alyssa enjoys hiking, games/movie night, with her husband and two beautiful children, and her Siberian Husky, Cronus. She is a lover of wine, cheesecake, and more wine.
Some parts here and there of the story was a little tiny bit interesting.
Widow heroine.
OK steam.
➖ What I disliked:
A little too much focus on the sexual part of the relationship and not enough focus on them falling in love.
The plot and main characters are a little too formulaic… there is nothing that really stands out or brings something new etc. It is too similar to /reminiscent of many other historical romance books… so it kind of blends into the crowd.
The heroine is only 28 years old and has been married twice and widowed…. A missed opportunity to have a heroine that is a little older or just older/mature.
The heroine and her friends was a little too immature for their ages.
The main characters spend too much time in the story/plot not being around each other.
Lucinda and Alexander were perfect for one another. He was a determined bachelor and she had been widowed twice. Lumina was strong, financially independent, and didn't want to marry again. They become lovers and gradually fall in love. This story was sexy, romantic, and fun. The book was well-written and my favorite of this series.

After one night of passion with Alexander, the Earl of Chisholm, Lucinda finds herself more than attracted to Alexander. Still, she is wary of involving herself too deeply as the earl is a rogue who does not believe in attachments. She’s twice widowed & doesn't want to marry again, he doesn’t believe in love & has no need for an heir as he has two brothers. I just loved this book & devoured it in a sitting as I couldn’t put it down. I loved both Alex & Lucinda, their chemistry was off the scale but they also spent time together & really got to know each other. I loved this love story which was pure romance with more than a tad of steam. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I love these kinds of book tropes! A daring widow and a handsome rake. Lady Lucinda was dared to do something scandalous and it turns out to be a delicious dare! I have not read too many of Alyssa Clarke’s books but they are usually pretty interesting and addictive with steamy love scenes. The book is a fast paced romance with interesting secondary characters and a beautiful Epilogue!
Hot and wicked but also sweet. Lucinda is a widow who dares to engage sexually with the earl who is courting her while they spend a week in the country, but that earl switched rooms with another earl...
A dare from the ladies at 48 Berkeley Square. Lucinda, Viscountess Darby, is dared to seduce the Earl of Raymore at Lady Cashmere's House Party. When the conversation turns to love, does it make passion burn a bit brighter? Alexander, the Earl of Chisholm is intrigued by Lady Darby. He makes her laugh and her heart give a curious flip. After three days at the party, Lucinda makes her decision that night to take the dare, only it is Alexander's bed not Lord Raymore's bed she goes to for seduction. Thus begins a passionate affair that is all consuming. Neither want to get married, but the affair does not burn out and circumstances call for a life's decision. Is it love? This book has descriptive love scenes and is pure romance!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book via Booksprout.
I am really enjoying Alyssa Clarke’s writing and have from the first book she wrote. This series especially.
But with that being said, I fucking loved this book. So far, I have loved this whole series..a lot. I really loved these characters. Alexander and Lucinda are so yummy together. So HOT!!! You can just feel their heat. Great chemistry. Great storyline. The characters were well written. And as always, hot and yummy sex. So damn good!!
I would definitely recommend this book as well as this series.
Lucinda has been widowed twice and is considering having an affair when she accidentally ends up in the bed of Alexander instead of her intended lover. One YOLO and much humping later, they're in a full-fledged bang-cation.
It was going to be a five star review for me, but I didn't like the pregnancy plot and lack of development from Alexander.
What happens in a dare and you end up With the wrong for a secret rendezvous
Lady Lucinda Darby never thought she would follow a dare from her friend the Duchess Theodora to go into the bedroom of the Earl's Lucinda has been scene as a possible potential new husband w/in the ton. Lucinda has not had the chance to actually be in love with either of her husband's. Now she's a widow she enjoys her independence & not extending to marry. But she would like to have a passionate affair can she do the dare that the duchess has asked her to Complete at the next garden party? Alexander the Earl of Chisholm never expected to be an accidental tryst. No that is exactly what happened when Lady Lucinda Darby walked into his bedroom at the weekend garden party. Lady Lucinda Strips and gets under the covers to a naked Alexander. But instead of Panicking and rushing out back to her quarters. She ends up having the night 🌙 of her life. She never had the passion in either one of her previous marriages. Lady Lucinda never knew what love making could be until she slipped into the bed with the wrong Earl. Fate had it in for the two of them to continue their passionate love affair. Build up a friendship, learn what makes them tick. What their life experiences made them both decide that they don't want to get married. Or could their blossoming passion for each other. Have them realize that being alone is not the answer. But their growing passion & affection for each other is actually love.
Lucinda who has been twice widowed is unhappy with the slow way the man who is pursuing her is moving. She accepts a wager made by her friends at 37 Berkley Square a women's club where the ladies behave in unconventional ways and learn self defense among other things. The wager is for her to slip into the bed of the man in question while they are at a country house party. When she gets the nerve to do this the bed she goes to is occupied by the Earl of Chisolm rather than the man she expects. She had met him earlier in the evening and felt something she had not felt with the two men she had been married to. The attraction was mutual and she is a widow so it will not effect her reputation so she spends the night. Alexander has no intention to ever marry and Lucinda has no inclination to marry again so it seems perfect for them but no romance is without drama. Feelings increase and they are not always on the same page. They separate and it seems their affair is at an end.
I found this to be well written holding my attention. I love the characters as we see their emotions and how they are changing. Her friends are there for her no matter what and I like that. They may be outrageous at times but they give and take advice and always support the women they consider to be sisters. I hope you will enjoy this as much as I did and maybe choose to read the rest of the series.
5 STARS for this exciting and fun storyline for Book 7 in the Series: Wagers and Wallflowers plus provides a great BLURB. Characters are interesting & some are already known from previous books from this popular author. Further it is fast paced and catches the readers up in the fun & other expressive emotions playing out on the pages of this book.
Once again we find ourselves at 48 Berkeley Square inside that lovely wonderful secret women's club members who have just dared one of the founding members to have an affair while at a house party she is attending.
Twice widowed but still not 30 years old, Lucinda has decided to not remarry & ends up in the wrong bed. At 33 Alexander has decided not to marry because of emotional trauma from his childhood & because he has 2 younger brothers as his heirs. Even better one already has children.
This is amazing storyline of two people without any pressures to pretend anything to be together & forge a wonderful friendship that desire for each other just makes it even deeper relationship. We as the reader have to follow & see if they manage to retain their connection when time goes by and in the social whirl of the Ton.
Wonderful read and series by this author. I didn't realize that I have red alk 7 books in the last seven days. Alex and Lucinda both do not want to marry and just to have an affair due to past relations from prior relationships. Alex due to seeing his parents quarrel and not knowing the true reason as to why they did. lucinda 's reason that her second husband thought she had trapped him into marriage. They come to love each other deeply and get their HEA. I an unable to tel! TBE whole story and ruin it for you you as you need to read the series. Happy ready and enjoy. Would highly recommend this author and series. 😊
Very quick read. This novella is a sweet tale of a woman who at 28 was twice widowed but has not experienced love or passion. She is not a virgin but she just doesn’t get the hype. The earl is 33 and has one night trysts but has not had a mistress or long term relationship because women get attached even if he tells them he doesn’t want anything more. They fall in love but they’ve both sworn never to marry. What to do…
Medium steam Good banter No third parties or triggers No big misunderstandings Good pacing Good conflict resolution
I have really enjoyed this series so far , the writing is exciting humorous and very erotic . This story is all about a dare with consequences, loved these two characters who turned into passionate lovers and friends . I am enjoying this author so much I’m glad I found her in my inbox 👍🙂
Lucinda & Alexander (Chisholm. She is twice widowed by 24 and he is a forever bachelor. Having not had sex in a few years, the ladies in the social club dare her to climb into the bed of the Earl of Raymore (a peer that has been flirting with her nonstop). At a country house party, she finally decides to do it and climbs into the bed of the Earl's just to find that Raymore and Chisholm traded rooms and she's in the wrong man's bed. Earlier in the evening Lucinda and Chisholm encounter each other in the garden and have an instant attraction and chemistry. It's this attraction and chemistry that makes her decide not to leave his bed when she finds out its the wrong man's bed. The next morning, not wanting to make their thing more than it is, she runs back to London. Her not being there makes him return to his country seat with his mother and sister.
She's with her younger cousin and decides to go visit Lucinda's parents. On the way, fate intercedes and they have a wheel break on their carriage and they find the closest home to get aid and it is, of course, Chisholm's family home. She stays the night and despite him being a one-and-done dude they hook up again.
OK so in essence they agree to have an affair because neither one of them are interested in marriage. Either one of them could end the affair whenever they want and go their separate ways. We read them really starting to fall in love (he takes her out on his yacht and they spend a lot of time together).
Lucinda's 2nd marriage went to crap because she fell pregnant and they married. She ended up having a miscarriage and her husband left her believing she was lying. They lived separately and then he died. So she is freaked out when she realizes his pull out method wasn't so fool proof. She feels queasy and her breasts are sore (all the signs of pregnancy) oh and she's late. After almost throwing up during an late night picnic he set up, she decides to tell him of her suspicions. It's not that he doesn't take it well but he's shocked, I mean he enlisted the pull out method. He asks if she's sure and she said she isn't certain. He pulls the old let's wait and see then figure out what to do. Even a scare wasn't preventing them from having sex that evening and the next morning she didn't say anything about her possibly being pregnant but he didn't want them going on their morning ride (you know to protect the baby).
A couple of days later, she takes a carriage to her parents house (they didn't live super far from Chisholm). She sees a doctor who confirms that she's pregnant. After the shit show from her 2nd marriage, she decides she doesn't want to force another unwanted marriage and ends their affair. She writes Alexander a letter telling him that the pregnancy scare freaked her out and she realized that affairs can't go on forever. She then leaves town and buys a seaside cottage where she would go and have their baby. In essence, her letter didn't indicate she was or wasn't pregnant but he assumed that she wasn't and was disappointed. He wants to fight for her but knows he hates when people pressure him about marrying. Knowing that she doesn't want to remarry he decides to give it sometime and see if she returns to him. 5 weeks of time. Feeling something was wrong he goes to London searching for her only to find she isn't there. So he goes to her parents house in the country and finds out they are out of town. So he hires some investigators to find her and no news comes in for a couple more weeks. So he goes to the club.
He of course finds out that she isn't at the club either so he talks to the Dutchess of Hartford. After he confesses that he loves her and wants to make sure she knows it (even though his love may not make a difference in them being together). She gives him directions to where Lucinda is. At the cottage, she's 4 mo pregnant and realizes that he should know about the baby and be part of the experience. She decides to return to him and tell him when he pulls up at her cottage and sees her getting up from her garden. He calls out to her and she freezes. She can't turn around to face him and asks why he's there. He tells her that he loves her and wants to talk with her. She turns around and sees her bump and goes a little batshit because she implied in her letter that she wasn't pregnant and that she would've had his baby out of wedlock and have it be raised a bastard.
He tells her they will marry and she says she won't trap him because he doesn't want attachments. He tells her that she changed the game for him. He loves her and they marry. They have a baby girl.

As with the other books in this series, this was another great addition. I finished this a few days ago, so I'll try to remember everything, but overall I adore the series.
This book follows Lucinda, one of the founding members of the ladies club. She's a widow (twice over), and craves a true passionate relationship in her life. Combined with a wager, she finds herself climbing into an unknown bed during a scandalous house party. Although not the bed she expected to climb into, the man she found, Alexander, was someone she already found herself attracted to after their conversation earlier in the evening. The two are both looking for a casual relationship, not wanting marriage or more, so they natural come to an understanding. As the story progresses they find themselves falling in love.
Overall, I really really enjoyed it. The spice, the tension, everything is always very well done in this series! My continued complaint is to please please please make these longer! I fly through them so quickly, and I truly think more time to get to know the characters, and be immersed in the story, would be so much better.
~Spoilers Ahead!~
Okay, so this will be a spoiler but I want to make a note about a trope in this in case anyone wants a warning or whatever. Anyways, there is an unexpected pregnancy, which I absolutely HATE. But, it wasn't too terrible here. I think because Alexander and Lucinda were already clearly in love, and marriage was already a possibility for the two even without the baby. Also, it happened towards the end of the book, so it didn't take away from the love story.
Heartfelt.... What started as an affair bloomed in to a very beautiful love story.... Loved every inch of this story ..strong heroin.... Charming Hero.... Their sweet branter....Discovering love... Enjoyed reading it.... Very touching... Read it 2 times... Very good read
I had read a couple of the books in this series that were before this book and decided to skip this author. Feeling her books were more lust than romance but I'm glad I gave this one a try. It was very passionate. It was a quick read, focused on the relationship,I liked both Lucinda & Alexander. I think I will try the first book in the series next.
This is a straightforward lust story. Not much going on other than the lovers lusty enjoyment of each other with lots of sex. The only question is whether they marry or not. Good for the reader who just wants a bare bones story. It's not badly written, just not much to it.
This is the story of twice widowed Lucinda and her desire for a lover. At a house party she decided to take on a dare to slip into a bed of an earl. Unbeknownst to her it was the wrong earl. Alexander was everything she wanted and neither wanted an attachment. We read how their love grows. A great love story. Enjoy!
Loved how this couple fell for each other. I liked how they built a relationship with each other and stayed respectful of the other's wishes. No games, no angst, no tantrums - just straight romance.
Once again I enjoyed the story and Lucinda was a very likeable character. But there were some little inaccuracies and inconsistencies that I noticed. Was it me or did Lord Chisholm’s eye colour change from ‘silver’ to ‘dark green’? Apart from that, looking forward to the next!!
I have thoroughly enjoyed every story in this series and this one did not disappoint! I usually avoid widows with traumatic stories but Lucinda was different. She was stronger than her trauma and it didn’t weigh the story down. I look forward to more!
Lucinda is a twice widowed woman and firm in her decision to never wed again. However she accepts a dare to seduce a lover and the events unfold with emotional hilarity.
I love following the adventure s of the ladies who are so interesting. Their friendships in the ladies club make me want to read more! So well written and I look forward to many more!
A dare for a widowed woman to seek out a certain man but she goes into the wrong bedroom to be pleasured till the morning hours by an Earl who knew how to make love!
Very good story! Lucinda was a very adventurous lady! I loved her daring personality she was a breath of fresh air in a time when women were only regarded as marriage material!
Good read. She is part of a Ladies only club that gives out dares. This one was for her and it ended up all wrong. She ended up in bed with the wrong Earl but somehow this mistake works out in her favour.
