Absolutely wonderful! I am loving this IDW run so so much. So many new wonderful characters. Of course I miss the OG's (RIP Sally Acorn) but these characters are created and written with such love and care.

I LOVE the IDW run! The art is consistently an absolute delight and the writing is great! The humor and dialogue are wonderful! New characters like Whisper, Mimic and ohh my god i am forgetting her name but she’s like… Not a squirrel, but a.. Raccoon? She’s cute. Eggman’s protege is gay and I love him, too. The stakes in this storyline are so high! I love the essential zombie story we’re getting here, it’s very intense. SPOILERS but I’m so bummed Shadow is out for the count! He’s certainly a favorite of mine and I wish he had more to do (that wasn’t getting zombie-fied…) Overall, I’m having so much fun! I’m hoping I can find the next issues in Hoopla, assuming it’s still ongoing. Definitely recommend!

The IDW Collection Volume 2 consists of the first half of the second saga known as The Metal Virus Saga (Issues #13-#17). This saga showcases that a Sonic story can have some gloom to it if written well. This is somewhat of an infection/zombie arc that showcases all of the troupes you'd see in such, and it's great. This still is currently considered the best saga thus far, and for good reason.
Verdict
This continues the masterpiece, which is the IDW iteration of Sonic the Hedgehog. As stated in the previous review, you don't get any better than this for Sonic. I still highly recommend it. It is still amazing.

Like this is fine but after TMNT's IDW run that was just...perfection...this does NOT compare at all. Like it's very child-friendly and being Sonic I guess that's fine, it's just that there doesn't seem to be any depth. The characters go through the motions...the good guys save the day and the bad guys destroy it. Whisper had a good moment/arc in this volume but otherwise I'm not too intrigued by anything because the stakes are so low.

I was first introduced to Sonic in middle school, as for Christmas my parents had purchased three Sonic games for our Wii: Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, and Sonic Unleashed (SU). While I had heard of the Sonic franchise before, I didn’t know that much about it. After seeing Shadow in Sonic and the Black Knight (SatBK). I was fascinated by his character design and went to the Sonic Wiki to learn more. Soon after, I watched a YouTube play-through of Sonic Adventure 2 to learn more about Shadow’s backstory, and this caused me to become a Shadow fan and a fan of the series. Looking back at that game’s plot as an adult, I can note a few plot holes and inconsistencies, but I was just impressed by how extreme, dark for a children’s game at least, that the story went. I was so impressed by it I told all of my siblings a summary of the plot. While I don’t play Sonic anymore, I still consider myself a casual fan; at least I do still have nostalgia for both SatBK and SU. Since my teenage years, I’ve been familiar with Sonic IDW. A reboot of the Western Sonic comics, after the Archie comics. While I saw screenshots of the comic here and there, I only got the chance to read the comic itself in my adulthood.
Sonic the Hedgehog Volume 2 follows the events of the previous volume. It starts just with Sonic relaxing, only for Tails to confront him with a crisis with the return of Dr. Eggman after he apparently regained his memory. Eggman, teamed up with a new character, Doctor Starline, has developed a formula to transmute plants and animals into robots, “zombots”. However, Sonic accidentally gets affected by this metal virus, and the only way he can temporarily slow the infection is by running. But Eggman continues to infect the rest of their world as the virus spreads. Most of the original Sonic cast are in character, and even some of the new characters like Doctor Starline, Tangle, and Whisper fit in almost seamlessly, especially from a character design perspective with the rest of the cast. Going back to the newer characters, the main standouts are certainly Tangle and Whisper who get their own short story arc in this volume. Mainly focused on Whisper learning to open up to building new friendships with others, especially Tangle, after she lost her former teammates during the previous resistance against Eggman, during Sonic Forces.
Though they are a few minor changes to the OG cast, one good example of this is with Amy Rose, as she takes on more of an administrative role for the force opposing the invasion. Though it’s nice that it’s implied that she’s still attracted to Sonic, even though it’s muted compared to how it’s typically shown in the video games. It’s a fair compromise between the extremes of her more obsessive characterization in the games and how, unfortunately, in a lot of recent Western media she’s often spiritless. They are also countless references and nods to Sonic games, from the classics up to Sonic Forces. While there were a few times they felt a bit forced, as a fan I actually found them for the most part to be quite delightful. Unlike with the kodomo manga, Sonic and the Blade of Courage, which served to introduce young Japanese readers to Sonic for potentially the first time, the Western IDW comic takes it for granted that anyone already reading it is already a Sonic fan. The illustrations likewise are beautiful and balance keeping in mind the models for the game characters while still having their own flair.
One thing, however, I did not really care for was how Shadow the Hedgehog is portrayed in this comic, though unfortunately until fairly recently, it’s actually just in step with how’s he normally been portrayed. That is, he often is flanderized as just being a jerk as opposed to his more complex original characterization during the Adventure/“Shōnen” era of Sonic. Specifically in #19 Shadow gets infected by the metal virus despite both Rouge the Bat and Sonic warning him NOT to touch the “zombots” as the infection is spread by touch. However, Shadow deliberately touches them while he’s fighting them out of arrogance because he’s the Ultimate Life Form, perhaps? He kinda just comes across as an idiot. Granted, I understand that the writers likely made this decision so there could be a fight between zombot Shadow and Sonic. And the writers needed a way to get Shadow out of the plot as an ally since canonically speaking he has the same speed as Sonic. Still, I wish that the writers could have found a better way to get him out of the plot without making him hold the idiot ball, for no reason. Likewise it’s interesting to note, that he first gets infected in his gloves, so arguably he could have just taken them off to stop the infection from spreading. Though I suppose in the writers’ defense, the gloves likely are made of organic material so that could explain why the infection spread throughout his body.
Still, even with this mischaracterization issue, the volume on the whole is a delight for Sonic fans young and old. With some fun action, humor, and an overall enjoyable time with nice nods and Easter eggs to Sonic’s history.

This is a beefy collection. It contains issues 13-20 of the main book, the 2019 Annual, and the Tangle and Whisper mini-series. For simplicity's sake, I'll be reviewing each of these on their own.
The main series starts with a new storyline, The Metal Virus Arc. At first, it was pretty interesting and I was excited to see how things would go but by the end of this book, I was pretty bored. The story feels too bleak for my tastes and each issue is more of a downer than the last. I've heard a lot of discourse on the characterization of Sonic in this arc and in my opinion, he's not that bad. Is he perfect? No, but he's not as bad as some say he is. His belief in the good in Eggman and Metal Sonic makes sense as he witnessed Eggman's capacity for good and has witnessed plenty of other robots turn over a new leaf, so his believing the same for Eggman and Metal doesn't seem that out of character, at least not to me. I do feel like this arc drags though as in this nearly 300-page collection only half of the arc is covered and I feel like the story could have been streamlined a lot more if they just cut down on a lot of the issues.
I've already reviewed the 2019 annual before so to summarize my thoughts, it's pretty fun. I especially like the story Victory Garden.

Thinking about how this is probably some kid’s first exposure to body horror… whoever marked this as “lighthearted” you will be hunted
I think I enjoyed Tangle and Whisper’s issues more than the Metal Virus issues, though. Not only were they arguably less stressful, Whisper is one of my favorites (although Tangle has one of my favorite designs), and their friendship is adorable.
I wasn’t expecting Cream to appear this time around! I’m happy to see her, as she’s a childhood favorite of mine, but poor girl.
That said, I do feel like because both main arcs (the Whisper + Mimic arc and the Metal Virus arc) were so strong, it made this volume emotionally and structurally stronger than its predecessor. The infection/apocalypse part is pretty tropey, but there’s something so uncanny seeing a disaster of this scale happen to the Sonic cast of all characters (something about how they’re meant to be more permanent than a Marvel or DC lineup and shouldn’t be “killed off” as easily), and so far I am enjoying how Sonic’s infection is being handled, even if how that’s gonna turn out is very predictable (due to his increasing burnout). It’s well-paced, too, offering lots of action and banter in each issue and a range of character perspectives, while not detracting from the stakes or the plot. (Though, I do see some people finding Tangle and Whisper’s arc distracting. Blehhhh I don’t care it’s my subjective review and I think what I want. Though, I do have to wonder, where are all of those characters now that the virus is uncontrollable?) As always, the art is beautiful!

Collecting the complete IDW series in print, or at least in recommended reading order (as the descriptions boast) has become a blessing and a curse. I appreciate reading the chapters in a collected format in the order they were released as intended, but this book collecting the "Infection" and "Crisis City" arcs from the main series, which are a continuing story, are abruptly halted to segue in to the unrelated 2019 annual and the Tangle and Whisper 4-part mini series. This really snubbed the flow of the story telling of the main series. The metal infection was teased at the end of the previous book and I was quite eager to explore how it was going to progress, but 8 issues later with no end in sight it's already wearing thin. Unnecessarily bringing in every supporting character, I'm sure they'll be relevant later down the line, but slowing down the pace to a crawl by showing the infection grow from every conceivable angle has not helped. The previous IDW collection suffered from too much unnecessary world building from the start, then capped itself off with the hasty "Battle for Angel Island" arc was superb once they had found their footing with the comic, and I was hopeful that this next collection would continue to do so. Instead we have the first 10 issues of an unfinished story that could have been wrapped up in 8.
The Tangle and Whisper mini series stuck out a bit, being completely irrelevant to the main story, which is a shame because it was certainly the highlight of the collection. Tangle and Whisper are the most interesting part to come out of the first collection and I was excited to find out more about the two new characters here. It would have broken the self imposed rule of "everything in reading order" but the book should have lead with that and the 2019 Annual, then collected the rest of the chapters included.

The Metal Virus arc started in this collection and it's the reason I started reading these comics in the first place. The storyline did not disappoint. It had the right level of horror, tenseness and funny quotes.
I do think they did my boy Shadow sooooo wrong in here. I know why they did it, but I wanted him around for longer than two comics🥲
Besides the main story, there's also the Tangle and Whisper mini series. I did not expect to love it as much as I did. Whisper's history is amazing and the villain was genuinely creepy. A great extra story!
The 2019 anniversary stories where fun, but except for the one with Blaze and Silver, I had hoped for a little more plot. Hench the half star deduction.

Another fantastic entry. I actually surprisingly loved the Tangle and Whisper mini series and felt so bad for poor traumatized Whisper and very hyperactive ADHD Tangle who was bored with civilian life after getting a taste of battle excitement with Sonic and co. I also thought the metal virus storyline was super intesting and was actually quite surprised that Sonic was infected and a lot of his friends were too. I loved seeing Starline’s disillusionment with Eggman at the end too. Never meet your heroes, even in the villain world lol. Eggman may be a genius, but I don’t think he’s super good at executing his plans and he hyperfixates on Sonic to the point of it being almost neurodiverse special interesty. It cracked me up that his passwords are literally a variation of “I hate that hedgehog.” Like really? Get a hobby dude lol. 😂 I think Starline is even starting to see that his hyperfixation on Sonic is his downfall. I loved this book and can’t wait for more.

very exciting and devasting developments in the plot for our hero crew and especially sonic, who now has to contend with both saving others from eggman's virus and from himself. really enjoying sonic's character and thought progression as he grapples with these threats. can't wait to read vol 3 of the collection

October 11, 2025Genuinamente una de mis cosas favoritas que han salido de toda la franquicia de Sonic. No lo llamo obra maestra porque no quiero parecer exagerado, pero podría serlo perfectamente.
Si ya la primera saga era increíble, esta... la supera todavía más y de formas que no me esperaba. La tensión que siempre está presente, los momentos que te hacen llorar por los personajes, los sentimientos que te hace sentir... Todo, sin dejar de ser Sonic.
Merece la pena empezarse estos cómics únicamente por lo bueno que es este arco. Iba con las expectativas muy altas y las ha cumplido todas. Si ya la primera saga era increíble, esta... la supera todavía más y de formas que no me esperaba. La tensión que siempre está presente, los momentos que te hacen llorar por los personajes, los sentimientos que te hace sentir... Todo, sin dejar de ser Sonic.
Merece la pena empezarse estos cómics únicamente por lo bueno que es este arco. Iba con las expectativas muy altas y las ha cumplido todas. Giving this one a 9.5/10. I read this with my 6 and 4 year old daughters. This one was a bit more advanced than the Vol 1 collection, but honestly I thought from an adult perspective it was more well done. I took some points off due to the metal virus (spoiler) taking sonic out of "fight" for so long. ~look, i know he was still fighting but it just wasnt the same~.
What really made my rating go up was the included mini series that was about Tangle and Whisper. That was honestly just fantastic writing. The inclusion of an annual involving Rough and Tumble was really cool too. My kids laugh every time that Rough and Tumble come in and have a terrible "rhyme" and when Tails and Sonic made fun of them the kids thought it was great.
What really made my rating go up was the included mini series that was about Tangle and Whisper. That was honestly just fantastic writing. Honestly, Ian Flynn is doing something remarkable with his Sonic run. It feels like the games, honors and references the whole franchise history, acknowledged the memes and makes every character dynamic and fun to read. Just seeing which of Sonic's friends shows up next is a joy, but on top of all that, the writing is actually interesting and good!
This arc in particular has been really surprising to me. as Flynn dives into a zombie scenario I did not expect! Plenty of fun for long time fans, while still being a great kid's comic.
Also, the Tangle and Whisper series was wonderful and really made me love the duo.

More of the same amazing stories continuing from the previous huge collection. This time Sonic and friends are in a race against time as Robotnik is back and unleashes a tech virus turning everything into zombie robots, or "zombots." And to my utter shock, writer Ian Flynn does not pull punches as the crew is consistently getting pushed to their limits leading to many heartbreaking scenes.

Amazing storytelling!
I've been a huge Sonic fan for as long as I can remember. I've played nearly all the games and have followed the story since I was a child. The story in this series has been absolutely amazing and remains true to the main characters. The elements of storytelling are perfectly executed, and the fact that it's in a collection is even more awesome.

It's impressive that the IDW Sonic series is seeming like it may surpass the Archie Sonic series as far as quality goes, even accounting for nostalgia points with Archie. I'm very excited to keep reading this series. I love the art and the story is loads of fun.

An improvement on the previous volume, most likely cause it doesn't rely on knowledge of previous games. This can most accurately be described as marvel zombies meets the borg meets happy tree friends.
