ALWAYS EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

Ahhh, the good life. Goodbye Navy SEALs, hello rehabbing a rundown lake house he inherited. Being a former Lieutenant Commander will come in handy for Brick Matthews. He gets to boss himself around while tearing down a dilapidated shed and re-roofing his new home, among a hundred other things.

First he has to get rid of the smarmy real estate agent who’s been trying to buy the property for years. Sounds easy, until Brick uncovers layers of secrets, including attempted murder.

In the middle of the intrigue is a buttoned-down CEO with amazing blue eyes.

Roman Furrow is so far from the type of man who hits Brick’s radar, he doesn’t see what’s coming until it’s almost too late.

Having never given away his heart before, Brick is damn sure not going to let anyone or anything hurt the man he’s fallen for. He’s been trained for this – he’ll protect him with his life.

Ridiculous. Writing is rushed and there's several typing errors wrong tenses.

Characters aren't developed, side characters keep getting introduced who will clearly be having their own books that only highlit how little we got to know the main characters. We see as much of big red-haired Fletch as we do the main characters, in fact he and Brick spend more time together than Brick and Roman do.
I was picturing Brick as fair until halfway when we learn he has dark hair, all those tattoos and they were mentioned once in passing (yes, it was the cover woo'd me!). Roman has blue eyes, nothing else about him mattered. They had one conversation before sex but were in love and in deep, the only and forever - I was either laughing or rolling my eyes. The sex scene is actually quite funny! Brick has faced warzones apparently has PTSD (thrown in there but not developed) but states the most traumatic moment in his life was painting a stone turtle?!

The plot all seemed silly and juvenile, poorly developed and delivered, there's no tension to what should be life threatening situations, confrontations seem cartoonish. Dialogue doesn't read natural. I guessed who the bad guy was as soon as mentioned, and was right, the reasoning when revealed was too ridiculous for words. We keep hearing how tough navy SEALS are, Brick is often referred to as 'the navy SEAL' but he and Fletch make shit bodyguards. I with no military background was shaking my head at the stupidity shown.

This book is 141 pages short and it took me what... four? Five, days to finish it. Which really should be telling of how much (little)?, I enjoyed it.
Brick and Roman are caricatures of people. They didn't feel even a little bit real to me. And because of that I just found myself not caring.

This book is in desperate need of editing. And cutting. There are so many storylines and all of them only half baked. Like we got a little bit of everything but not enough of anything. I own the second book in this series so I'll probably pick it up at some point when I've forgotten how much I didn't enjoy this one.

This was a quick read. I liked the story as a whole but there was times I would lose track of the characters. I think I needed a bit more character development to keep track of who everyone was especially secondary characters.

This is book 1 in the Fire Lake series by M. Tasia.

Opposites attract romantic suspense. The "first book in a series world building" took up too much of the story. I realize it's novella length but there were so many plot threads that things weren't as developed as I would have liked. Especially in terms of Brick & Roman's relationship. While I enjoy when the mystery/thriller aspect is large part of the story, I want to feel like the MCs had a few conversations before throwing out "I love you". The threat was wrapped up rather simplistically and in a way that undermined the best-of-the-best soldier narrative.

Now that some of the foundation is established I am interested in trying out book 2, Fletcher, too see if the focus is more on the MCs and the suspense.

Brick just inherited his great aunt's lake house. He meets Roman when his snobby father tries to buy the lake house from him. Brick starts digging into their company and finds out there's a hit out on Roman.
Who is trying to kill him and why???

I've read a few series from this author. They are quick but deep enough for me to care. Exciting with the drama... I needed to know who was after Roman!
The romance was sweet n a wee bit spicy. The tornado part and the rainbow turtle made me warm and fuzzy. I'm just bummed we didn't get to see the switcharoo they talked about....
Their lil found family on the lake was cute. I'm excited to see where this series goes.

3.5 stars.

Brick is in his late 30's, muscular, tattooed, fit, and newly retired from the Navy Seals. He is just getting started with renovations and updates to a lake front home on some acreage, which he has inherited from his aunt. He comes to find out a neighbor, a villainous wealthy old man, had been pestering his aunt and is beginning to pester him with offers to buy the home. Brick comes to meet Roman though one such offer and their hands zing at first contact.

What follows includes scary tornados, murder attempts, bodyguarding, more murder attempts, and a happy ever after.

I would love if this was longer. I'm not opposed to insta love or insta super strong connections, but the more backstory and details the happier I am, with any book. Enjoyable and recommended nonetheless.

*I was honored to be provided with a copy of this book by the author.

2.5 Brick stars! ⭐⭐✨

This was my official first M/M read so I was very excited about it.

It started good and the writing of the author was promising but then I started to lose interest in it but I keep on trying to give it a chance as I wanted to love this book.

But unfortunately, it was an okay read for me.

Brick is the first book in the Fire Lake series by M. Tasia. It is a contemporary romance novel with a suspenseful plot and a slow-burn romance.

The story follows Brick Matthews, a former Navy SEAL who has inherited a lake house in Fire Lake, Maine. Brick is looking forward to a quiet life of rehab and fishing, but his plans are quickly derailed when he discovers that the real estate agent who has been trying to buy his property is up to something shady.

Brick's investigation leads him to Roman Furrow, a buttoned-down CEO with amazing blue eyes. Roman is the last person Brick expects to be attracted to, but he can't deny the chemistry between them.

As Brick and Roman get to know each other, they also uncover a web of secrets and lies that threatens to destroy both of them. Brick must use his SEAL training to protect Roman and bring down the bad guys.

Brick is a well-written and engaging novel with complex and relatable characters. The suspense plot is gripping, and the romance is both heartwarming and steamy. I especially enjoyed the way Tasia explores the themes of love, trust, and redemption.

If you're a fan of contemporary romance novels with a suspenseful twist, I highly recommend Brick. It's a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

4.5 stars A great start to the book as Brick takes in the run down appearance of the lake house. Wow There’s trouble brewing when Julia turns up unexpectedly.
A developer wanted the property and a real estate man isn't playing nice. The story progresses and dramas and things happen and not to mention Mother Nature as well. Roman's is in danger with someone out for him. Brick and Roman have a simmering attraction and Brick's protective instincts kick in.
A great finish to the book with dramatics as the bad guy is known. This is a first book for the series and it sets it up nicely for more books to follow with Fletch, Shaw and Spence. A fast paced book with both pov's included. I've read most of this authors the Gates series and really liked them and look forward to reading this series as well.

Brick 38 yrs an ex navy seal inherited the lake house from his aunt now he's got a renovation to begin.
Roman 36 yrs was the son of the developer, his father's Company which he was trying to save.

This is a m/m romance with Brick (38), an ex-Navy SEAL who has inherited his great aunts home and Roman (36), the CEO of the company that wants to purchase that home.

Brick is a great character, grumpy, quiet, holding in all that emotion so nothing escapes. Roman is a suit-wearing sweetheart who falls for Brick from their first meeting.

I loved how being around Roman instantly instils Brick’s need to protect him. I absolutely loved the turtle story and felt it was such a beautiful moment that Brick opened up and shared his emotions with Roman.

While there were parts of the story that felt rushed or not quite build upon, I liked it! The supporting characters were great and I look forward to seeing what the Lake House has for us in the future.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this title.

Great start to a new series! The author brings a cast of strong characters centering on Brick and Roman. She does a beautiful job developing the story and their relationship and paints her scenes perfectly, moving the story quickly and smoothly. I'm definitely being generous here.

2★'s = it was ok.

Someone get this author an editor. How this book even got published, and yes, there is a publisher, is beyond me. There is no way this was proofed and honestly, the story wasn't much better.

Sucks, I was looking forward to digging into a series. Not sure if I'll even bother with the next one.

This was NOT for me.

It started out okay with Brick moving in to his inherited house and kicking off the stroy of some rich man trying to buy it from him any way they can.
Then came Roman, CEO, who was in danger and Brick felt the instant need to protect him.

And then it was just a mess of rushed storytelling without any detail or angst or tension. Even the intended exciting parts were flat. The chemistry between are two MCs was non-existant and they fell in deep love within the matter of days after having one conversation.

This story lacked excitement, entertainment value and romance. The stroy was sometimes really boring and did not make sense at all. The mystery was unfounded and at the end was a major disappointment. The "twist" was not a twist but a random turn without any justification.

I don't even know why I'm giving this 2 stars.

Brick Matthews has returned to Fire Lake, Texas to retire and pay homage to his Great Aunt Sophia–by rehabbing the house she bequeathed him when she died two years before. As a Navy SEAL out on missions, he hadn’t been able to return that often, but he loved Sophia deeply, as she was one of the few people who’d cared about, or for, him as a child.

He’s not pleased when a young woman enters his crumbling home, posing as a realtor, and ready to service any of his “needs” in order to get him to sell. First, he’s gay, and second, he’s not going to sell–not even if a woman’s trying to (poorly) seduce him into it. Turns out, she’s a broke single mom working for the realtor as a secretary, and he’d threatened to fire her and blacklist her through town if she didn’t get Brick to agree to the sale–one the scumbag was trying to arrange for years now. Brick’s lakefront property is highly coveted by his neighbor on the other side of the lake, a deplorable human by the name of Stephan Furrow, former CEO of Furrow and Son Investments.

It seems that Stephan is all about strippers, coke and riding around in his cabin cruiser on Fire Lake. His son, Roman, has him on an allowance, ever since he’d gotten the shares needed to wrest control of their company from his father’s mismanaging hands. Roman is a decent man, and has worked tirelessly, and thanklessly, for the past few years to restore the portfolios of their investment holdings after his lust-hungry father nearly bankrupted them. Some of daddy-dearest’s minions still work for the company, though, and they make trouble happen to see if they can destabilize Roman’s operations. When Brick comes after Furrow and Son for their shady tactics to take over his property, well, Roman is ashamed. He had no knowledge of Stephan’s involvement in coercing the secretary–who Brick has hired to help manage his construction projects.

Meanwhile, a few members of Brick’s old unit need some place to stay and something to do, so he puts them on renovation duty. Soon his house is a bustling place. Well, maybe not exactly bustling, but the bedrooms are filling up. Even has some room for Roman when his car breaks down near the property during a storm. The forced proximity of hiding in a storm shelter breaks open some raw feelings for both Roman and Brick–because they each see the deeply good core of the other during mutual rescue attempts. Beyond that, well, Roman and Brick get to talking. Seems Roman has had an inordinate number of “accidents” that coulda-shoulda incapacitated him. Were these just coincidences? Or, is there a plot to take out Roman, returning power and money into Stephan’s greedy paws.

This was a new-to-me author experience. I’ve read a lot of SEAL romance, and veteran romance, so I thought I’d really enjoy it. I kinda felt as though there was a lot of coincidence that overwhelmed me, giving me the sense that I already knew–or could reasonably anticipate–exactly what was coming next. All the bad guys were too sinister, and all the good guys were too heroic, making them all feel a little one dimensional, and the plot gimmicky. The pace of the romance felt too quick, as well, without sufficient time for Brick and Roman to really develop a lot of chemistry. It seemed like Roman was outstandingly naive, and his father cartoonishly malevolent. This book is a clear set up for the cadre of former SEALs that come to Brick’s aid to later find their own romances. I’m usually okay with that, but I think it was a little heavy-handed in this story. I might try another book in this series, just to see if I got a bad vibe on this one.

Normally I love a romance with the uptight x daredevil trope, but in this instance I was very disappointed. The premise was good but the book tried too hard to deliver a romance and suspense at the same time. Brick's background as a SEAL was dropped at every turn, no matter if it was fitting or not while Roman seemed to be completely clueless. At first I was excited for Roman because he appeared like the stressed but assertive CEO I was hoping for. That didn't last long though. Pretty much after one chapter he does not contribute to anything at all and feels like a damsel in distress, which is a big issue I have with the book overall. It's a gay romance but it is glaringly obvious that the main characters where shoved into the mold of a hetero normative storyline. We have Brick the big bad protector and Roman, who is supposed to be the uptight clueless type, which is normally the female character. This felt like the author wrote a romance with a hetero couple and then turned the woman into a guy.
Besides that the romance went from 0 to 100 in no time. There was no build up and suddenly they were declaring love. It felt super rushed and just very corny.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Brick is a former Navy SEAL who's just returned to the Fire Lake (Austin) Texas area. He's inherited his great-aunt's lake-side home, and plans to spend his retirement fixing it up and fishing in the lake. But barely before he unpacks, a sleazy realtor is banging on the door to offer him obscene money to sell the property. Turns out the same realtor has been harassing Brick's great aunt for years on behalf of his ultra-wealthy neighbor, Stephan Furrow. Stephan gets off on the wrong foot by racing his party boat on the lake, nearly capsizing Brick in a simple boat out fishing.
Meanwhile, Roman Furrow, Stephan's son is very disgusted with his father. The older man nearly ran the family business into bankruptcy with excessive partying and ventures, and now he's demanding $3 million to buy a neighboring property... which turns out to be Brick's home. Roman, suspecting his father is up to something sleazy and underhanded, insists on being present for the meeting to present the offer. However, Brick has a few surprises for Stephan and the sleazy realtor: he's not selling, and he has video proof that the realtor blackmailed his young employee Julia to try to sleep with him to secure the sale. Aghast, Roman ends the deal, fires the realtor, apologizes to Julia, and tells his father off. Stephan leaves the country that night, and Roman gets caught with a flat tire in the middle of a tornado just outside Brick's home.
The two men take refuge in the house and fight their attraction for the night. But Brick and his buddy Fletcher are already investigating Roman's background based on several innocuous comments, suspecting that someone is trying to kill the CEO. They're right, and they save him, which leads them to sheltering in Fire Lake again. Only this time they act on their attraction... and are instantly monogamously in love and a permanent relationship. *eyeroll*
The suspense was not very suspenseful, and the rest of the very short novel went fast.
Things that worked: this was very fast paced and very short.
Things that didn't work: Instalove *bleagh*
Characterization was fairly flat. Brick got some depth, but was almost a walking talking Navy SEAL cliche. Roman was a bit more inaccessible. The POV switched a little too easily - at one point we're in Brick's head, the next paragraph its Roman's POV, the next is Bricks.
The copy I had needed more editing: I noticed more than several grammatical errors and sentence fragments. I feel like this was rushed out and just needed a little more finessing and proofreading.
I generally like Tasia's work but this wasn't her best.
And not a promising start to a new series.

Roman’s miscreant father, Stephan, wants Brick’s land – he’s obsessed with it. Unfortunately for Stephan, Roman holds the purse strings. Roman is the opposite of his corrupted father, which has made him a target. Brick has family ties to the land and is curious as to who wants it so badly. But after a sparks-flying meeting, and Brick discovers that Roman is in danger, his protective side takes over.

Brick is a story that I greatly enjoyed. Let’s face it – who doesn’t like a bunch of buff Navy SEALs teaching the greedy bullies of this world a lesson or two?

Technically, it’s not perfect, as I found several grammatical errors. BUT, when Brick appears, the page lights up. He hates to see anyone being taken advantage of. He is likable and suffers from PTSD, but this component is not a focus of the story. Due to Roman’s father, early encounters between Brick and Roman are laced with distrust – soon, feelings morph into something else.

An element of the story that I found refreshing was that Roman isn’t cast as a young man who finally stands up to his overbearing father – he’s already done it and has taken control. He’s an executive that’s had his fair share of private and business encounters and is an experienced voice in the corporate world.

There is some instant love and demands for ground rules commitment, which I was a touch skeptical about – but, hey, it works for some. There are people out there who, in their hearts, know when they’ve met the one for them – albeit they leave it a while before they say verbalize the feelings. While some action scenes are a little predictable, they are the parts that I was hoping for and always look forward to reading when presented with a SEAL team. They were also executed well.

The world-building was superb. Amongst several standout characters, Fletcher was a scene-stealer, so I was chuffed to discover he is the subject of the next book.

Overall, I found the story a super balance of action, drama, humor, backstory, and many other elements that made an entertaining read.

The good
    + The honest communication
    + Roman saving Brick's turtle
+ The clear expectations between them
+ Both of them going all-in for a committed relationship
+ Brick's protectiveness over everyone he took under his wing

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
o Is this a spin-off series? Bricks dropped a lot of names, and sometimes it felt like I was supposed to know who they were

The bad
    - The editing was done very badly. There were many mistakes, and some things were so annoying they pulled me right out of the story. "We need to get vertical fast, or I'm stripping you standing up."
    - At the end of the book,
    - Roman's mother was an awful woman. She didn't support Roman when he came out as gay, then didn't approve of his choice of boyfriend because he wasn't "from a good family", and then used emotional manipulation to make herself look like the victim. She was not called out for any of this
    - After they learned Roman was in danger,

I liked the relationship between Brick and Roman. Almost everything else was a disappointment. And once again, family members were forgiven for their horrible behavior just because they were family. Just because someone is family doesn't mean you owe them anything. If you can overlook the family stuff and don't mind a predictable plot, the romance is sweet and I'd recommend this book just for that. But as a whole, I don't think this is worth it.

I loved the start of this new series with Brick the retired Seal and Roman the CEO who needs protection. Fletcher, Shaw and Spence round out this group of former special forces guys and I cant wait for there stories. Now about the book Brick also known as Christopher is taking his retirement and life one day at a time he has PTSD that he deals with and his Aunts lake house is just what he needs he wasn't planning on staying but it's his now. What he gets is someone trying to buy his aunts place from him using some shady tactics. And when he meets those people he let's them know about it. Roman is more then tired of cleaning up after his father now he wants a massive amount of money for what what has his father done now. The good news Brick is hot but hes not really happy with Roman's father and doesn't trust him yet. But then Roman has allot of mysterious accidents can Brick figure out what's going on before his lover ends up dead.

Brick and Roman have allot of chemistry it was nice to read a story without allot of drama between the to leads and they didn't jump into bed write away either so I liked that there was a gradual getting to know you period. And the plot for this book was interesting and it kept me guessing who the real bad guy was. It was also good that there was other characters in this that made it feel like a real town.

I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.

Loved this story by M. Tasia. This is the story of Brick and Roman. Brick is returning to his Great Aunt’s house that she left him after she passed. Brick has always had good memories there and is just getting out of the Seals. Roman is a CEO who does not have a very good relationship with his father. He is trying to bring his grandfather’s company back from almost ruin that his father put it in. Roman’s father wants to buy the land that belongs to Brick. A meeting is set up with Brick and Roman’s father, only it’s not to sell the land. Brick has a few tricks up his sleeve to get the old man to leave him alone.

Throughout the story we met a few new people – Julia, Rick, Fletcher, Shaw and Spence. It is because of Julia that Brick set up a meeting with her boss and Roman’s father. Fletcher, Shaw and Spence are buddies of Bricks. Rick is Roman’s assistant and friend. With all these characters, there is lots of drama, a little action, passion, suspense, mystery, and deception. Roman ends up needing protection and Brick will do anything to keep him safe. Buti in the same sense, Roman will do anything to protect Brick as well, and he doesn’t think about himself. The chemistry between Brick and Roman is so intense, but they don’t act on anything until after they get to know each other a little better. Great story and I cannot wait to see who is next in the series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

"M. Tasia's Fire Lake series unfolds in a captivating universe inhabited by Navy SEAL veterans navigating new phases of their lives. Each book delves into distinct themes and challenges, while maintaining a cohesive narrative with recurring characters. The baton is seamlessly passed from one protagonist to the next, keeping the reader engaged.

At the heart of it all is Brick Matthews, a former Navy SEAL ready to leave that life behind and start anew. Inherited property, a dilapidated lake house, becomes the catalyst for building the Fire Lake community, symbolizing Brick's personal reconstruction. The contrast between Brick and Roman, the CEO eager to acquire the house, sets a key dynamic. PTSD shapes Brick's temperamental and guarded demeanor, while Roman exudes a corporate charm, falling for Brick at first sight.

Roman's pursuit breaks down Brick's emotional walls, establishing a trusting bond. The supporting characters, though protective, occasionally divert attention. The fast-paced narrative introduces multiple characters, at times overwhelming the reader. Despite some setbacks, notably in editing, the series promises an engaging experience. Dive into the Fire Lake series for a thrilling exploration of love, life, and the intricate bonds between SEALs."

Brick and Roman meet when Roman participates in a meeting between Brick and his father to buy Brick’s land. brick isn't interested in selling, but Roman’s father has been relentless. There is an instant attraction between the two men, but they both initially resist, never expecting to see each other again. However, fate intervenes and gives Roman a flat tire near Brick’s house in the middle of a thunderstorm, followed by a tornado.

Brick soon discovers that someone has been making repeated attempts on Roman’s life. Using his contacts from his time as a Navy SEAL he goes about trying to figure out who is after the man he’s falling for. After a very close call at Roman’s office, he insists Roman stay with him and work remotely until they solve the mystery. It's not long before the two men give into their desires and start hooking up.

"Brick" is a low-angst novella betweena retired Navy SEAL and an investment broker. The bookmoves quickly, but the mystery of who could be after Roman keeps you engaged. Due to the short length of the book, the romantic scenes are limited, but you can tellhow much Brick and Roman care for each other. The side character’s, especially Fletcher, from Brick’s old team were interesting and left it open for sequels. I enjoyed “Brick” and rate it four stars.

Brick is a romance story with a side order of suspense. Brick has inherited his aunt's house and now after leaving the navy and his role as a seal, he decides to move in and do the house up. He hasn't been there long when he learns of a local millionaire who not only wants to buy the house but was harassing his aunt to sell. His methods are less than shady and Brick decides to teach him a lesson. When he meets the man's son, Roman, he's not sure if he can trust him, but the attraction there is hard to deny.
This is a fairly quick read, but it still manages to cover quite a lot of ground. Brick is a typical alpha-protective type and when the life of his new love is threatened, he can't help but try to protect him. This was an entertaining read. A few little bits seemed a little far fetched, but nothing that ruined the story. If I had to find a fault it would be that when we find out who is behind everything that's been going on, it all seemed a little rushed, even though there are a few twists that I didn't see coming.
Overall this was a good read and a good start to a series. I'd be keen to see what the rest of the series will hold.
