Genevieve Lewis Paulson is the director and president of Dimensions of Involvement, Inc., a non-profit growth center located on 165 acres of the Ozark mountains in Arkansas, a center of psychic, personal, and spiritual learning, accrediting students in the study of Kundalini energy development. In the early 1970s, she founded Sunergos, Inc., a spiritual growth center in Chicago. Where her new experiences might have led her to abandon Western religious beliefs, she instead found a method to meld two varieties of truth, creating a synthesis of two great traditions of belief.

This is a rather frustrating book.
Frustrating in the fact that Paulson clearly thinks anyone who picks this up will have an advanced degree in both Kundalini and chakras.
Only, it did not start off this way. She begins this quite brilliantly actually. She walks you though the process and builds off what she has already established quite well. And knowing that she is a teacher of this, this makes a grand amount of sense.
Then somewhere in the 5th or 6th chapter she goes completely off the rails. It is like she forgets she is laying the foundation for someone to recognize and develop and understanding of their chakras, where they are and how they work, and starts talking as if one can go from struggling to understand the location of specific ones to having something akin to the force in an ability to control them.
So, yeah.... frustrating. Super effing frustrating...
Even more so, as it is more than just slightly apparent that she can converse and write about these things clearly and for an introductory audience. She just does not.
My only guess is that this was adapted from a few manuals she teaches from at her meditation/wtfever center, and she did not feel the need to adapt them to initiate level. Alas....

That said, I can tell there is quite a bit of value here, and I will return back to this book after some further investigation of this, as it seems like her method to activate one's chakras would be more than a slight boon to work with.

I only hope I can get there soon.

It was good. My acupuncturist told me it sounds like I've been going through a Kundalini awakening recently, and I am both weird enough and have experienced enough weird shit to give it a shot with a reasonably open mind.

I'm always skeptical with stuff like this, which is kind of annoying because I've experienced so much of it. When does the doubt go away?

This book gave me a lot of practical types for letting energy flow through me. Helping me keep calm when the experiences feel overwhelming. Awareness of certain parts of the body and what may be causing blockages. So, at the very least, it gave me a psychological perspective on how to proceed in addressing certain deficiencies within my own psyche.

Worth a read if you're into non-traditional spiritual stuff like I am. In particular, if you have had or are currently having what you would call a significant spiritual experience. This could feel like intense cleansing, psychological or spiritual rebirth, severe reassessment of your life or how you relate to the world generally. For me, it was the unearthing of previously denied trauma followed, in short order, by a nearly overwhelming flood of backlogged spiritual, personal, and social insights. Now I'm trying to fine tune as I prepare to begin my real life, having lived a half one for so long.

Wow. Sooo much information in this book. The first half is a fascinating introduction to the Kundalini tradition; the second half feels almost like a spiritual encyclopedia. Was tedious to get through at times but I’m sure it’s very useful as a reference book

I had never been exposed to understandable information about kundalini energy before this book. I had heard about it in passing, for example, in yoga class "this position opens up the kundalini energies more than this other pose that we just practiced." Or in meditation class, "prepare yourself for the feeling of rising energy, it may be overwhelming, but if you keep breathing and focusing your mind, it will change or fade away" But, neither of these outlets explained what on earth this energy was, how to use it, or direct/shape it. This book does that and more.

I really wish that she had an audio recording of the hundreds of exercises that she presents in this book for the different chakras/levels and ways to open/cleanse each one. That would save a lot of voice recording that I'm going to have to do to be able to practice this in any useful manner.

I didn't really connect with the part of the book where she was trying to separate kundalini energy from the holy spirit of her Christian upbringing. Who cares if they're the same energy or different... I didn't understand why the delineation mattered so much to the author that she set aside an entire chapter for its discussion.

Another interesting part of this book is Paulson's descriptions of the "seven eyes" or "seven hearts" in the human aura. I've read quite a few self-help/new age books, and I'd never heard of either of these ideas before. Fascinating.

I think I'm going to read some more books on the chakras to see if the authors agree with each other or if they all just present conflicting information on forces that the average person can neither experience nor see...and yet they claim that it's an inherent ability for everyone to be able to perceive these things. It's definitely a field that I'm interested in for further study and experimentation.

Very strange. Over my head. Maybe someday if I decide to gather more knowledge in the area this will open up but with my elementary knowledge this was mystifying.

unbelievably helpful. found when I was pretty young and NOTHING gave any indication of what was going on with me, except this book.

i guess i do understand some of the reviews with lower stars saying it leaves them in the dust... I guess I never approached this book thinking to read it straight through!!!! I've been working with it for over a decade, and i'm sure there are many sections I have yet to read.

it really is an amazing resource for DOING, the exercises, it is pretty unreal how stabalizing these can be, especially if you are experiencing symptoms of kundalini release, but i would imagine it would be like meditation in that just doing the exercises would settle and balance everything....

I work pretty slowly with it, I have a few times a day 'balanced' each sub chakra according to her instructions or just by placing my hand or fingers on each spot she lists, to incredible positive affect on my daily life. though it is subtle, it is fascinating to take the journey of self discovery to work with this, and find where I am blocked or too active, and contemplate why. its a long journey, but seriously this book has been a godsend and absolutely one of a kind, way ahead of its time and will prove to be am immense resource for those experiencing awakening or trouble in their lives, if they have the discipline to use the techniques provided.

If you're looking for an introduction to kundalini, this is not the best place to start. I often felt left behind as the author assumed previous knowledge and even experience of the things discussed. The book could be much better structured and educational.
Even if you are looking for an intermediate level text, I would still read another book instead because of the poor editing. It really feels like it wasn't proofread before printing...
Taking suggestions for better alternatives to this book!

In the book, Kundalini and Chakras by Genevieve Lewis Paulson, she explains the process of exerting kundalini throughout ones body. She also discusses different chakra releases and how to heal the body using said kundalini. In the beginning of the book she gives a brief history as to what kundalini is. Kundalini translates to “circular power” and is an individual’s “basic evolutionary force”. (3) Paulson then explains how it is a natural force anyone can achieve and it is not a religion. She goes on to describe the development and opening of chakras. Paulson states that chakras “exert and receive energy” throughout ones entire life. (59) You may not realize it is happening, but the warmth of the chakra can be felt and used in many different areas to heal your body. Closer to the end of the book Paulson teaches the ways of releasing certain kundalini energies. She explains that releasing kundalini is “always something of a risk” but “different in each person.” (190) Paulson then goes on to explain certain techniques and exercises one can use to help release the energies of kundalini and create a healthier center in the body. This book was very informative in learning the different energies humans can access and also in learning many different exercises in how to release certain forces within oneself.

I'm putting this book aside for now. Found it interesting in the beginning chapters, especially regarding the chakra system and their functions/attributes; but got muddled on how I should proceed in the exercises. Never took a class in kundalini practice, so I found it hard to follow in later chapters. Additionally, the warnings on unsupervised voluntary release (Chapter 15) made me feel a little apprehensive on starting this process. I think I'll just continue my yoga practice and meditation for now. Maybe I'll pick this book up again in the future (after more study and assistance from a teacher). For now, it just didn't resonate with me at this point in my spiritual journey.

"Depression means something is being 'dug up' for you to look at." This is a memorable line from the book.

Having our Kundalini activated is indeed a wonderful & insightful experience, but it has its other side, just like any other blessing. This book came to my attention just in time to help me understand & remind me of that painful side. It offers simple exercises to cope with the problems we may encounter like depression. Helpful & inspiring read esp. the first & last part, but have to skip some parts around the middle to save for later advance practice.

Just finished, it was a decent read. I enjoyed the section on karma. Unfortunately, this book offers a few practical exercises. Obviously, the completion of such would affect the value of this book, dependent on results. I would not recommend this book to someone who is not wellread or at least previously introduced to the concept of kundalini. However, that does not change the fact that Genevieve Paulson has offered a plethora of growth to the reader.
