Rod Betancourt is an English teacher, writer, and author of the novels The Teacher and Horror in the Church. He has taught in primary and secondary schools, and higher education, so you know he has experience in horror. He lives in Los Ángeles, Chile, where he is constantly fighting against the God of Procrastination so he can continue writing. He usually fails. He really enjoys not interacting with people, watching movies (he’s a failed film critic, too), attempting to become someone, and, interestingly enough, reading. Do not attempt to make sudden contact with him or violence will ensue.

If you have been following me for a long, you must know how big a fan I am of horror mystery thrillers. And this one has to be counted as one of my favorite reads by far. Wonderful story, power-packed with thrill and suspense, and loaded with horror everything combined to present us all the book named “ The Teacher (Ghosts of Eternity Grove Book 1)” Written by Rod Betancourt, the book can amaze its readers by the level of perfectness it holds. The piece is divided into twenty-five chapters, which gives us an account of daily happenings in the story.

The book is well-structured and it is easier to follow the flow of the events. Another fur in the hat is the simple writing and candid vocabulary, which makes it more engageable. Talking about the story, it is set in a place called the Eternity Groove in the year 2022. Christopher Reyes, a Spanish teacher in a local public school, is our protagonist. He is leading an almost simple life as we call it until some strange events start happening with him. Events that turn his life into horror and leaving him stunned.

Chris tries to decode the mysteries and only to realize that three of his students, Claire, Kristian, and Jonathan, are linked to it. How are they related to these strange events? What are the people of Enternity Groove hiding? Does Chris overcome these horrors? Every twist is revealed in such a way that will give you goosebumps.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and waiting eagerly for the next parts to release. A much-recommended read to all the horror-mystery fans out there.

There was uncertainty at the beginning on whether this was going to be good or bland. Definitely persist, what an amazing concept and I will read the sequel The Nurse, ASAP.
Found strange and weird words like “shouldn’t’ve and couldn’t’ve, but they made me laugh.
The realisation the reader gets when you imagine what the teacher is living through, is a little goose bumpy.
Once the story gets into full swing, the action is non-stop and encourages the reader to investigate further.
Easy reading, action with supernatural twist, some gory bits.
Thank you voracious readers for the copy.
Enjoy.

3.5 stars

I received this book directly from the author, who found me via Reedsy.

The Premise
In the near-future of 2022, Spanish teacher Christopher Reyes lives in Eternity Grove. His simple life is shattered as strange things start happening — demonic voices in his head, objects that move on their own, strangers breaking into his house to leave ghastly surprises, and gory tragedies. His ten-year-old students Claire, Kristian, and Jonathan seem to be at the centre of everything. Chris and his friends must race to find out what’s going on before it’s too late.

The Pros
It’s been quite awhile since I read a horror, and I was looking forward to this one particularly as I noted that the author loves Stephen King — one of my all-time favourites!

I did see some similarities in his writing style though he has his own unique flair, of course. I really enjoyed the characters he created, which is something I think a lot of horror authors don’t care enough about — they usually give us one-dimensional stereotypes who react similarly to the horrible events unfolding around them. However, here we have a main character who is rooted in the real world — he is loved and admired by his colleagues, his friends, students and the wider community.

His relationship with his best friend was really fun to read, as well as the budding friendship with the nurse Luke — the dialogue felt real and relatable. I also liked that we saw the children’s side as well, and got to guess at what they were plotting behind his back. The world-building is thorough, and I liked the way we see bits and pieces as it gradually unfolds. The descriptions of the scenes with the strange happenings — particularly in his classes — were really great, and here is where his talent shines. There is also a build-up of mystery as Chris learns about strange occurrences in the past and pieces together what’s going on. His intuition to mistrust the children was also admirable, and it was interesting to read on as he flailed desperately to protect his students while also feeling like he was losing his mind. Finally, I also really appreciated the diversity of the characters.

The Cons
I wish I could have rated this a bit higher because I did enjoy it, but there were a few things that detracted from the overall experience for me. Mainly, it felt quite a bit longer than it should’ve been, and it included some details that could’ve been reduced — we knew everything from what the characters ate to what their favourite TV shows were, and what they did from point A to point B day-to-day that slowed down the pace of the plot. I would’ve loved to see it move along more swiftly, as I was getting impatient for the good stuff!

It also seemed odd to me that though we know the characters’ names, we still see their dialogue being reported by “the nurse” and “the teacher” repeatedly throughout. Finally there were a few plot arcs that were sprinkled in but I didn’t think were necessary as there was so much else going on already — namely, Luke’s ex relationship, and Alex’s trauma with his girlfriend. It diverted my attention from the plot, which was a shame because the plot is a doozy!

Conclusion
Overall this was quite a good read, and I’m glad I gave it a try. It was definitely memorable, and I think the author did a good job even though I wished it was shorter. I anticipate that a lot of what I found was “extra” may be laying the foundation for future books, as it appears to be the first in a series. The greatest strength of the novel, I believe, is that it found a way to bring in humour consistently although it is a horror — this takes quite some talent! It made you want to keep on reading all the way through as you grow to care for these characters and want to find out what happens to them. I would recommend to other adult readers who enjoy horror and aren’t overly sensitive to political correctness. I look forward to seeing what else this author has to offer.

This book will spook you out irrespective of whether you believe it or not. This book is dark, which not only covers spooky things but gruesome crimes too. The plot of the book is very interesting and intriguing at the same time. The book is not entirely horror. It has a zest of mystery, suspense, dark, and heinous crimes too. If you love a gory book that describes details that can raise your hair in your arm, then try reading this.

It is a psychological thriller that is bound to make you read the book in one sitting. If you wanted to read something like The Shining by Stephen King and couldn't hop on a book that would match its enigma, then this book is the one. A lot of mysteries are hidden in this book with a plot that will make you wish to complete reading as soon as possible. It has one of the most unique plots ever written. Have you read any book that will make you go weak in your knees?

The narration is simple and the rhythm flows effortlessly. The character descriptions are sterling. The book is fast-paced and has a jaw-dropping climax. The transitions of the chapters are smooth. The climax is the highlight of the book. The chapters are short and the vocabulary is beginner-level. There are no loose ends in the book at any point. Prepare to get a lot of anxiousness when you reach the pre-climatic plot.

The story starts with Christopher Reyes, a Spanish teacher in a local public school in Eternity Grove. The year is 2022. He is the protagonist of the book. In a sudden rush of events, Chris is jerked with events that are unexplainable. He realized that these encounters are linked to three other people and those are his students. To decode these horrors, he tries to dig the coffin only to realize the unexpected. The reason will give goosebumps to readers in every possible way. This book would be loved by readers who love a good horror mystery.

What is it about little children that make creepy books even creepier? I’m not sure, but this novel definitely sent some chills up my spine.

Chris Reyes is a Spanish teacher at Lois S. Vends school in Eternity Grove with a completely normal life in every way. Until one day, he has a horrible nightmare. Quickly following this, were the voices. Voices that poke and prod at him until he thinks he’s going crazy. Then the incidents start. First, it wasn’t much – just objects moving, disappearing; but then his house is vandalized and people start getting hurt. And who seems to be in the middle of it? His three favorite students. Chris doesn’t want to believe that these kids are actually capable of such horror, but with all clues pointing to them, what else can explain what is happening?

This was a fun, thrilling read. It grabbed me from the first page, and I was immediately drawn into the unfortunate circumstances of Mr. Reyes. I thought the plot was well-written and the characters well thought out. I quite liked how the author split up the chapter into days – I find it’s details like this that really help the audience get into the novel. Generally, I found the book easy to read, though I wasn’t a fan of the random massive paragraphs that appeared throughout. It throws me off when I’m confronted with a block of text that spans half a page. Other than this though, I found The Teacher a thoroughly enjoyable read and I will be looking for the following installments!

Thank you Voracious Readers and Rod Betancourt for my copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Stine.

Review through Voracious Readers Only

Such a thrilling scary story. I was kept guessing throughout. The author made a brilliant job of creating 3 very creepy kids and overall a very creepy town. I am wanting to read the next in the series. Chris and Luke are both very cool characters and I'm interested in learning more about Rachel. The only reason I have given 4 stars were a couple of spelling typos in the manuscript. Most thrilling read I've had in a while.

3.5 stars I enjoyed it and definitely felt the Stephen King influence. I wish a little more background had made it into the first book, but I’m interested enough to read more. It could be a little shorter, but maybe that’s the King influence too. 😉I liked the characters overall and thought the kids were nicely creepy.

I received a free copy for an honest review from voracious readers.

The Teacher has exceeded my expectations. The world-building, the characters, the events, and how they all connect are well-tailored to make a slow, steadily sustained thrill that lead to a hang enough to make readers anticipate the second installment. The Teacher is the competently gripping first book to Rod Betancourt’s exciting horror series, The Ghosts of Eternity Grove.

I gave this novel a perfect score because not only did I enjoy the plot, I rooted for Chris as well. He is a brave character with the guts to play by the devil’s game. After reading the novel, even when he has done greater feat, I would still point this one time that he answered back to his tormenter with it’s name and had satisfactorily rendered them speechless. The novel also introduced side characters that are as interesting. I encourage readers to give this novel a try.

This was not it.

The writing style did not do anything good for me. Dialogue seemed unnatural and weird. Quite inconsistent. Lots of mistakes. Overall not a good time.
