The Hawthorn tree.

You can eat the berries.
Taste the juice.
But the seeds are the deadliest part.

And I was going to become the seed.
I was going to be the cyanide that destroyed Ollie and everything he valued.

The Set—what was left of them anyway—were going to pay for what they did to me. For the torture they put me through.

They drowned me.
Drugged me.
Humiliated me.

But I was not going to let them take my dignity.

Disease is book two in the Hawthorn Academy Series. It is a dark high school bully romance, and contains themes that some readers might find uncomfortable. This book is a part of a trilogy and is NOT a standalone.

I am lost for words

Guys when I say I loved Disorder I mean it, but god this was on another level.
My trust issues where still there, I distrusted EVERYONE.

This school and the world and characters Katie created have me hooked. I love every boy in the sect and still despise the Set.
Leo might have become my favourite character in this series. I knew my feelings for him were strong in disorder but they only got magnified.

Okay so now on to the plot; bullying story in highschool, throw in some fake dating, some amazing friendships, some hot dudes and overall just amazing characters and you have this wonderful story.
I was already hooked but when Katie introduced the most amazing fake dating trope the world has ever seen, I might have screamed a little. I LOVE LOVE LOVE SKY AND LEO. Okay so now I want them to be endgame because god they were so great together.

I'm not ready to talk about that ending yet, I need answers and I need them now!!! God I cannot wait for disturbed.

Sorry for this mess of a review but aaaagh

So what I said about the first book, pretty much applies here. The characters are still one dimensional and actually none of them have any redeemable qualities, even the main character. The secrets between them are obvious but no-one can seem to tell the truth to save their life, the dialogue between the characters is bland and predictable and honestly I kind of hated myself for reading this book. The ONLY thing that made me read this book was the cliffhanger at the end of the last one and quite brilliantly (or maybe I have a problem), the ending of this book has saved the series once again and now I need to know what happens.

WOW, I mean seriously wow! I finished Disease, and I needed some time to process after that reveal and cliffhanger. It was completely unexpected and changed everything I thought I knew about Skylar’s story.

Disease by Katie Lowrie is the second book in the Hawthorn Academy, a high school bully romance series. Skylar has returned to school after being stabbed in the hallway of Hawthorn Academy by an unknown foe. Things return to “normal”, or as normal as they can be as Skylar embarks on a revenge plan with the help of Clo and Griff. Stuck in summer school, Skylar starts fake dating Leo to get back at Ollie and the others who caused her torment. Darkness lurks around the corners and just when things calm down chaos ensues, Skylar’s revenge will not be as easy as it seems.

Katie Lowrie has written another phenomenal book. There’s so much suspense and angst in this book along with the immense mistrust of the other characters. There were so many twists and turns that were completely unexpected. The revenge I expected, but fake dating Leo?? That wasn’t even on my horizon as a possibility. On that note, I LOVED Leo and Skylar together so much! Honestly, Leo and Skylar are endgame for me. I know Skylar loves Ollie and whatnot, but let’s be real that boy has caused Skylar a lot of harm and she needs to get out of the funk she’s in. Skylar has grown from the last book to this book and her relationship with Leo only helped encourage her growth. She transformed from this reserved outsider to a confident woman who fights for herself. I’m not fully for Skylar and my favorite character in this book has to be Leo. We saw a side to him I did not expect.

There are still so many secrets and the danger surrounding not only Skylar, but all the people at Hawthorn Academy increases leading up to the epic reveal and cliffhanger. I have so many questions and I’m so confused! I need the next part ASAP!

Book review - Disease (Beta/Arc) - Katie Lowrie - ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

So the arcs for Disease came out today and I’ve been so excited to post my review and not that anyone cares but I haven’t been myself since I read this just over a month ago.

I am still loosing my shit people.

If you read my review for Disorder then I am sure you are well aware of the trust issues that Katie had given me and these issues did not disappear for this whole book. I let my guard down once but brought it back up again quickly.. yes I am very aware that I’m talking like it’s real life BUT I am so invested that it feels too real.

The storyline gets darker and so much more intense and it had me on the edge of my seat. I could not relax one bit because I was waiting for the massive bomb to explode. And not only did it just explode, IT BLEW UP THE EFFING WHOLE UNIVERSE.

That ending has me SHOOKETH. I honestly don’t know how to put into words how I feel. I physically cannot comprehend what happened! I tried so hard throughout the whole book trying to predict what could happen and even if I could have guessed anything I still would’ve been way off the margin. Katie has discovered a plot twist that will literally fuck with your brains. I read this book back at the beginning of April and I am STILL NOT OVER IT!!👏👏

I definitely caught the feels in this book and hard. And then I lost them again. And then I got them again. It’s honestly an emotional rollercoaster and Katie got me hurting more than a break up with my ex! (Skylo 4eva thas all imma say👀😂)

I’m so emotionally invested in these characters and what they’ve put me through. I still find myself awake at night thinking about them and more than once I’ve had to rant to Katie over it!

Honestly, you guys are gunna LOOSE YOUR SHIT.. I hope you’re ready I swear to god!

Katie you are my hero, my inspo and friend and I don’t know what I’d do without you aside from getting some decent nights sleep 😉😂 love ya so much gal!💜

I DNFed this one. I just didn't like how the FMC was sooo her. Like even after realizing they betrayed her she's literally like OMGs they're soooo hot. Like fine they're hot. But she doesn't really respect herself and literally suspects her bestie to be a backstabbing b*tch the entire time and is like "she doesn't share with me" but girl.... you don't make it easy now do you? And the boys are like "get back together with teh bestie or don't we don't really care" Honestly I DNF-ed it because I forced myself to read book one. Don't reccomend. Sorry!

Love,
Ishya
P.S. This is review #77. I only have 23 more reviews to go and only one day. Wish me luck!

Just when I thought I knew what was happening, again at 95% the game changes!

What the hell happened there? I honestly have no idea who to trust. I thought I had my bearings this time around but nope, the rug was YANKED from under my feet and I face planted the floor. The plot just thickens as the series continues and there's some sick sick person out there doing this to Skye. It's a tad creepy at times and how does her father connect all this up? He must show his face at some point because he's just too big of a part in the grand scheme of things.

Has my opinion changed on Clover? No. Still think she's a bit of a jealous character and I don't trust her and Griff together. Their probably lying to each other just to gain the upper hand somehow. Have I fallen head over heels in love with Skye's character yet? No. That's solely because she's too trusting and everytime there's a massive red herring she skips towards it like she's in a field of daisies but I hope that forms her character arc as the story progresses.

I am so ready for the next book!

Okay, so Disorder ends on a ‘what the fuck is going on?’ point that gives you major trust issues. Disease starts right after, and takes you back to Skylar who’s trying everything to make sure she can stay in school until she graduates. I like the subtle
growth Sky goes through, and how she’s still her insecure self but also becomes more determined to not let anyone mess up her goals. Now, Katie Lowrie takes the big part of this book to regain your trust, but also gives you moments to swoon over, one liners to laugh about and situations that keep you invested.
And then when you least expect it .... she will leave you hanging with another ‘what the fuck is going on?’, fucking with your head in the best way.
I can’t wait to read the conclusion in this trilogy!

This book is a whirlwind filled with much more suspense and angst than before. The plot thickens and chaos could erupt at any moment. You can't trust anyone, someone might as well stab you in the back when you least expect it, both figuratively and literally. Revenge being part of a plot is my jam and this delivered it really well. And add a bit of fake dating to the mix and what could possibly go wrong?

There's so many twists and turns that totally shook me to the core! They truly sneak up on you when you think everything is okay. I just love how you are anxiously waiting for the worst alongside Sky and have no idea what's going on either. I was a hot mess with my feelings; one moment I was swooning over a character... or a couple... and the next not trusting them even one bit. I already had trust issues reading Disorder and this took it to a whole other level, wow! And oof the angsty tension is real, that's all I'm gonna say.

So many questions are brewing in my mind and wow I'm super shook even right now. Here's a quote from the book that is the perfect way to describe the way I'm feeling: "What in the actual fucking fuckity fuck was happening right now?" That ending truly did utterly blow my mind and left me absolutely SHAKEN! I loved it all!

Disease is the perfect sequel and I CANNOT wait for more!

"He'd taken my heart, blown it up to the size of the moon, and then deflated it, leaving it broken. Limp and lifeless."

*I received this ARC from the author but the thoughts are completely my own.*

Summer School has Never Been So Drama Packed For Skylar Cresent

** This review contains Spoilers**
Book Two starts out with both girls Skylar and Clover forced to attend Summer school after suspiciously failing their mock exams.
Of course, as it turns out, it not just them but the two remaining members of “The Set”
Ophelia and Oralie
AND!
Oliver, Griffin, and Leo ( who is now a member of staff - swim coach)

So we get more of the hit and cold twisted relationship between Oliver and Skylar.

Yeah. As I predicted in my previous review of book one, Skylar is STILL stuck on Oliver.
This guy has treater abominable, and she can’t move passed his blue eyes, jawline, and full lips.
Yep, she clearly is looking under rocks, and behind doors, begging to find some reason to forgive him, because they have a connection…Phiff!

So.
With these seven students, plus eight staff the only ones left on campus, can we hear the wheels turning on the plot scenario yet??? …Hmmm

If you thought Skylar was done being the girl with a huge target on her back by now, you would be WRONG!

She has put through more drama than a daytime soap opera.
Beaten, bullied, attacked, she cops it ALL.

All while working out a little plot of to get her revenge on Oliver for that whole betrayal she went through in the last book
With Leo, also on her side, as he seeks to get Clover to admit her true feelings for him, the two enter into a “fake relationship”

However, with these two spending some much time together, it’s not long before real feelings develop with them both hooking up for real.

Then, we have the whole part where students and staff are being attacked, some with fatal outcomes.

This all seems to relate back, they feel, to Skylar’s bio, dad Jacob Cooper and a little problem where he stole money from “ The Sect” the name given to the elite, of which Jacobs family was a member.

But!
It’s the crazy as F ending that really throws things on it’s head with the author going ALL OUT to produce the ultimate shock value, hilarious twist.

In this second book the traits that made Skylar endearing started to become annoying.
The author constantly references, books, movies, tv shows, sometimes blatantly using some for plot scenarios.
Then we have Skylar’s inner voices questioning her every decision.
How many times does she say

“Not going to lie,”
Or
“To be honest”
Or
Eurgh!

But the most disappointing part of the story line was Skylar’s readiness to accept Oliver back.
Typical of someone who is in an abusive relationship, she was already trying to come up with ways to get Oliver back.
Not able to accept that their relationship wasn’t real.
So.
What does the author DO to speed things up between these two and offer Oliver a moment of redemption?
Well. a POS sleazy French teacher…Mr Hawkins.

You could almost see the wheels turning in the authors head…
Hmmm…How can we redeem the awful Oliver?
How can we get Skylar and him back on track?
It will have to be something BIG…Something traumatising that would cause them both to pause in their hatred and revenge plots.

BINGO!!,

And there is was…

Leading to the sobbing Skylar lying in Oliver’s bed begging him to -

‘“Make me forget.’”

Hands Up who knew THIS was coming.

So.
Now we come to the cliffhanger ending where poor Sky hasn’t learnt her lesson, and been screwed over again.

Will she finally FINALLY move on from Oliver to find happiness with Leo?
Or.
Will Oliver win her over AGAIN with everyone getting their HEA?
Sigh…Just like in the romance books Sky likes to read sooo much.
Blah!

reader alert! Books three and four are missing: one star. spoiler alert

I read two books of the series. I can not find the third book, and the author has not updated the release of the third book since 2021. Some readers have reviewed the book, so I am sure the book was released. It is upsetting, and I am annoyed with the author. LOL, it appears the author wanted to rewrite the books but has been having writer's block, and the reader can subscribe to Ream for $5 a month to read chapters of the book. I do not know how many chapters she has written on Ream, but by the time the author finishes the book and her writer's block is resolved, it might take another two years; it is an expensive book to read for a ridiculous storyline.
My review is for the only two books available. I am curious how the book ends.
The plot is poorly executed; it changes as the author writes the book, and it is a mix of drama that continuously happens, unfolds, and then a new drama occurs, leaving the reader in suspense. The main female character is so naive and truly a doormat. Skylar is dense, has no control over her feelings, and has no self-respect. She believes everything that Oliver or Ollie tells her, although there are a lot of red flags to suspect Ollie is not trustworthy. Skylar is so dense that she ends up giving her virginity to Ollie. Of course, Ollie is not sincere with Skylar; the book ends with Ollie revealing his evil plan and how he played Skylar. The second book starts with Skylar wanting revenge. She plans an act of revenge with Griff and her roommate. Skylar behaves and even internally discusses how she wants revenge on all the people that hurt her. However, again she is the one that gets broken. Again she ignores all the red flags that suggest aborting the current status and deal made with Leo. The boys, who are they? Ollie, Leo, and Griff are family/cousins and best friends. They are in to make Skylar hurt and pay for dues that are out of her control. The boys are loyal to each other, although they appear not loyal at times in the storyline. There is a particular sentence that Leo says to Skylar that only Skylar, Griff, and Clo know about how to hurt and destroy Ollie. The author or Skylar never picks on that particular sentence and moves on to another scene.
However, in book two, Skylar makes a deal with Leo. Leo appears a little better behaved as opposed to Olllie, but he is not so innocent and does plan to hurt Skylar. Regardless, Skylar ends up having feelings for Leo, a boy that is a mystery and reserved. Skylar is described by the author in this book as more sex-craving and lustful. She enters a relationship with Leo. I am not sure if the author's writing is trying to direct toward multiple partners' relationship with Skylar.
To summarize, the book contains an almost rape by a teacher, friends that are not so important or sincere, many secrets and lies, and love interests that are not trustworthy. Book two ends with a big revelation that includes an identical twin of one of the boys that everyone was clueless about, even the parent. How is that even conceivable? There are many questionable scenes that the author writes that are suspicious and not very realistic and pragmatic. I skimmed through the book because specific chapters did not hold much of my interest. I am curious how the book ends and if the book transforms into an RH book. Also, I am curious about the twin and his role in the plot.

I am seriously shooketh. This book has killed me and left me for dead. INSANE.

I was lucky enough to be asked to beta read this beauty for Katie, and I couldn't have loved it more if I tried. Apologies to Katie for blowing up her inbox with crazy messages fangirling over Sky and her story.

The suspense, once again, had me hanging off the edge of my seat before falling into a crazy, stressed out hole. The twists and turns this story takes you on is seriously insane, you cannot see any of it coming, with the mystery and shock factor being a constant heart attack creator.

Sky just keeps getting better and better. After the crazy of the first book, she comes back kicking and legit takes no bs. I adore her sass and confidence in this chapter of her story and seeing her grow as a person. Plus no spoilers, but her relationship with a 'certain someone' in this book had me deaddddd. I loved them so much! *insert crying face*

Ollie, Ollie, Ollie. What can I say about the crazy that happens with this boy in this book..? Hm, no spoilers so you'll have to read to find out.. but.. I fall for him even more in this book, although theres many times he deserves throttling.

I could go on for days, but all I will finish off with saying is the cliffy in this book will stomp on your brain and turn it to mush. It is CRAZY but so good!

This book deserves all the stars and more and I am literally deceased waiting for the next book. Get writing Katie bc I need more!

Suspense Filled and Twists and Turns!
4 stars
He’d taken my heart, blown it up to the size of the moon, and then deflated it, leaving it broken. Limp and lifeless.

If I can’t trust these characters, how can I trust myself and my emotions? And Katie?? Cause Katie is throwing plot twists like it's nothing, leaving everyone - and I mean EVERYONE - on my sketch list.

Katie brings in a suspenseful and angst filled sequel, picking up almost right where book 1 ended. To be honest, I struggled with this book. It was amazing, but Sky annoyed me to no end, almost making me want to stop reading, but the plot though? The plot and the premise is what kept me intrigued and continue reading and I’m so glad I did. The ending had such a twist, and it brings more of book one’s troubles and book two’s together while ending on such a heavy cliffhanger. There are characters you see in a new light, good and bad, and when I thought the bad guy was bad, and the good guy was good, I’m starting to think it’s the opposite. Because you can’t trust NO ONE. Ollie is probably one of the biggest anti-hero’s that I've read, and I can’t help but still root for him.

This book did feel a little repetitive, but will still take you on an emotional rollercoaster. Despite that, it was a very enjoyable read, and I am just itching for the next book. There are so many questions burning, theories evolving, you just don't know what to think. I live for the tension, the revenge, the angst and turns.

just a warning, probably some bad language in this review because it had me all kinds of fucked up👀

Skylar was warned off returning back to Hawthorne Academy after how everything ended in her first year..but she is wanting revenge.

I have severe trust issues with this series, Katie has you guessing in this book same as the first, and you just can’t settle as you don’t know what the hell is going on and who really is a trustworthy ally for Skylar.

Skylar is a girl who wants to see the good in everyone, don’t be fooled by her shyness and naive behaviour as she has quite the bite when she wants. She has definitely developed amazingly since book 1. ❤️

But..WHAT IN THE FUCK. I was chucked over the edge with the cliff hanger in this book. The plot twist just full on smacked me in the face. Just wow 🤯.

Thanks for Katie for letting me review this book and blowing my mind and just doing a fab series that literally feels like a reading version of cluedo 😅🤯.

Highly recommend this book it will have you questioning everyone and everything ❤️

Just when I thought that this series couldn't have any more twists and secrets, we get hit with a bombshell after bombshell and a major plot twist at the end. What. Just. Happened?

Disease picks up right where Disorder left off and gets darker as the story goes along. I have gone back and forth on many things, but the biggest thing is who to trust. Who do you trust? No one. Absolutely no one.

This book has been an emotional roller coaster, even more so than Disorder. Skyler is just trying to graduate, all while standing up for herself and enacting revenge over things that happened in the last book.

I have been trying to wrap my head around what is happening, and my mind is going a million miles an hour. I was not able to see that cliffhanger coming, but things are starting to make a little more sense... maybe? Who knows what will happen in the last book, but if its anything like the previous books, I know we are in for a wild ride!

Possible spoilers

Book two left me with more questions, than answers. Skylar gets stabbed, comes back to school to plot her revenge against those n who bully her. Although the best she can come up with ( even though it was Leo idea. Mind you Leo is one of the people who took part in the bullying) is to date Leo was is a friend of hee love interest Ollie and who happens to be a obsessed with the Clo who also happens to be sky's best friend and who is messing around with skys cousin!!! Keep in mind skylar knows all about this!! She sees how much this is hurting her best friend, but she keeps up the charade. Ollie shows no remorse or care for her until she basically starts dating Leo, and of course sky is unbelievably naive throughout this entire ordeal. It was and is a complete hot mess. However, the main question is when will book 3 come out?

Wow....this story is so intense! I mean, seriously I don't know who is on Sky's side and who is not!? There are so many key players in the plot, all of which have secrets they are trying to hide!
I just love how vulnerable and trusting Sky is, at the same time though she does annoy me with how forgiving and naive she can be. I suppose I wish she was a little tougher!
Great chemistry and steam between Ollie and Sky but is it bad of me to like Leo as well?
I am just so excited to see what happens next...talk about cliff hangers and revelations!! Ollie, Leo and Griff have a lot of explaining to do!!
This story will blow your mind in the best possible way....loved it!

Hawthorn Academy Book #2

~ They drowned me.
Drugged me.
Humiliated me.
But I was not going to let them take my dignity. ~

I loved Disorder and after it was left on the ultimate cliffhanger, I was eager to read Disease.

My trust issues definitely haven’t subsided - I wanted to be able to trust a couple of my faves, but I can’t 😢 The storyline gets deeper, with Sky doing everything she can to stay in school until she’s able to graduate. Even when everything seems to be progressing relatively well, you can’t relax because you know something BIG must be coming.

It ended on, you guessed it, another cliffhanger!! Can’t wait to read the end of this trilogy and see how everything pans out!

Katie continues to blow my mind. I loved how Skyler didn’t cowered down with the situation. She gets back stronger, more confident and with a plan. You go girl. All the time I was thinking about my own high school experience and how much drama everything would cause (without the murders and beatings) and for me it was such a good representation of that age feelings and actions. Sometimes reading as an adult you can think that characters are stupid for behaving a certain way but they’re not, they’re teenagers. Getting back to the topic, THAT ENDING. WHAT. I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING. Not even a clue. Starting book 3 now because I need to know how everything ends and I need to know it now.

Pretty good read

This book series is pretty good, a little Cringe at times but not in the “oh it’s cheesy” more of the “why would she allow that or he do that” it reminds me of lifetime shows/ movies really. It’s a sort read, i felt it could have been better if other characters POV was put in. Also i think the wetting is a little immature but then again it’s for Younger adults then myself. The mystery part is what really has me hooked in on it with out spoiling the read but It’s not like other academy books the plot has it’s own unique take and isn’t easily guessed.

The story is dark but gets darker the further along you get into the storyline. There is so much intrigue and suspense culminating from the angst from the characters. There are plenty of plot twists to keep readers on their toes. The cliffhanger at the end will leave you shaken with more questions than answers. 'Disease' is a fantastic sequel to 'Disorder' and am scratching to read more!

I liked book 2 much better than one. I seriously loved the ending as I did not see the twist coming at all! I love when I don’t see something coming! I do not care for all the f bombs though the books. It’s distracting and most are unnecessary imo. Can’t wait for book 3!
