After the shocking conclusion of last issue, Supergirl and her new friend Ruthye find themselves stranded with no way to pursue Krem, the murderous kingsagent. Each moment this fugitive roams free, the more beings become dangerously close to dying by his hand. There is no time to lose, so our heroes must now travel across the universe the old-fashioned way…by cosmic bus! Little do they know, their journey will be a dark one filled with terrors that not even the Maid of Might is prepared to face! Can Kara Zor-El lie low long enough to ensure their safe passage?
This time we have the duo go through space areas, face off against a dragon, and learn how to wash your hands. Yep, no joke. It's cute, fun, and interesting. Get a little backstory and forward momentum on the rest of the series by the end. The art is FANTASTIC.
I love the chemistry between the dead pan and ever so serious narrator and W.G.W. Supergirl . I know this is supposed to be a fantasy / sci fan revenge story, but I'm seeing this more as a road trip comic.
Think when this is all done, this will be a good comic to study as Tom King is somehow making wordy narration and a wild mix of genres work here
Once again, VERY wordy, as the narrator recounts her weeks-long space journey with Supergirl on their road to vengeance. Supergirl, on the other hand, is presented as very pensive and somewhat sullen. Not much happens to further the main storyline. Instead, we're given glimpses into Supergirl's persona through several minor occurrences along their way such as dealing with unruly fellow travellers and teaching proper bathroom etiquette. The artwork is wonderful and does a great job of capturing the emotional nuances of the storytelling.
The art is gorgeous, and worth the price of the book alone. But this is an unappealing version of Supergirl, one that doesn’t feel like Supergirl at all. Most of the story in this issue was dull and reading it was laborious. And I find myself not at all caring about any of the characters. For the girl traveling with Supergirl, Tom King is trying to write in a high, older style of English. But it comes off sounding unnatural and unconvincing, and as drawn out as it is I found myself simply wanting it to end. I’ll keep picking the series up just for the art, but King needs to up his writing game for me to recommend the story beyond this issue.
This is a really special book. It indulges in the craft of storytelling, at times it has the feel of a lay, even reminiscent of Chaucer in its sweep from the profane to the divine. Ruthye’s self-aware narration is a treat in this regard.
The story ranges from the cosmic — Supergirl fighting a space dragon — to the particular — an intimate scene of SG teaching Ruthye how to wash her hands. Evelyn’s art absolutely sells it too, communicating hugeness and grandeur equally as well as small and strange.
SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW is very similar to the titular character herself. full of pain, but also full of hope. this issue’s incredible, not only does kara vow vengeance for the assault on krypto, but she helps ruthye learn to wash her hands and also becomes a phoenix at one point (it’s badass). such an awesome series.
the brief mention of her mom with such tender memory made my stomach turn a bit, i feel so bad for her. We are introduced to her as a strong character who doesn't allow herself to stay down after something horrible happens. IF SOMEONE HAD KILLED MY DOG ISTG there would be no galaxy big enough for them to run from me
Good second issue + awesome cover art. A road trip story is always fun!!
For me, this issue successfully shed light on the core of Supergirl’s character and added momentum to their mission in the end. But my favorite was seeing the chemistry between Ruthye & Kara. I think Ruthye’s wordy monologues and Kara’s more casual way of speaking, when meshed together, kind of works? in a weird way. I’m not complaining. And I love the way Ruthye speaks highly of Kara.
narration is veryyyy wordy but it contrasts nicely with how blunt supergirl is... im loving the characterization of supergirl so far...also anyways if they don't include the handwashing scene in the film i will be evil.
