It was epic fun being back in Foley's unique world! I loved this story of hope and redemption and getting to see my favorite characters again. Definitely recommend this series for fantasy readers looking for that original read filled with fresh cultures and vibrant characters.

Silverblood is definitely a book for the top-favorites-of-the-year list! AAAHHH! I loved it so much and I have such a book hangover after finishing it. I need book three yesterday! *flails around* *hugs all the characters*

Okay, I’ll attempt to corral my thoughts into a smidge more order. (But really, all I want to do is fangirl incoherently!) I know I can’t do it justice in a review, but better something than nothing, I suppose!

I loved being back in this series/world SO MUCH! Silverblood is the second book in the Katrosi Revolution series, after Emberhawk, which I also loved. But I think I loved book two even better! It’s just sooo good!

Jamie Foley’s writing is delicious, as always. The perfect blend of heartpounding action and suspense, a dash of gorgeousness, and plentiful helpings of witty, snappy dialogue and banter. It’s hilarious, really, at times, and I am HERE for it! I just love how much of a blast it is. The sheer enjoyment level is high, for sure!

LYSANDER AND BROOKE. They’re my absolute favorite part of this book! I’ve been waiiiiting for Lysander and Brooke to have a story, ever since reading book one, and I finally read it and it’s everything I wanted and LYSANDER AND BROOKE FOREVERRR! I’m having an emotion.

Seriously, though, Lysander is a fabulous character and I loved reading about his adventures, struggles, and overcomings. (That should be a word, hush.) Ex-assassin, finally no longer controlled and striking out on his own, trying not to be torn down by bitterness and darkness, using his amazing herbalist skills alongside his epic fighting abilities (I want all the tea he makes!), and his sign language and aether powers . . . I just love everything about this guy! I basically just want him to be happy. *cries* LYSANDER’S THE BEST AND HE’S MINE. *wraps him in bubble-wrap to protect him*

I loved getting deeper into Brooke’s life as she tries to navigate being a leader and make the best choices for her people and for the amazing treetop city of Jadenvive—and, you know, not fall for a certain ex-assassin. ;)

Ryon and Kira! I loved continuing their story from the first book. They’re adorable and hilarious at turns and just yessss! It’s hard to talk about Ryon especially without spoilers, but I’m here for all the characters I adore!

AND THEN WE HAVE FELIX. This shape-shifting fox guy is THE GREATEST and his snark and unexpectedness gives me life! I’ve adored him since reading the Sentinel Trilogy, so I’m SO PLEASED he’s also in this prequel series set hundreds of years before the other series. (In fact, something about this book felt more connected to Sentinel in several ways which makes me happy.) Felix is fabulous and all his lines are so quotable!

Okay, but everything is quotable in this book. I mentioned it with the writing already but it deserves repeating: The snark and bantering dialogue is all SHEER GOLD and often hilarious. And don’t even get me started on certain amazing and unexpected proposal scenes. XD I CANNOT EVEN. ABSOLUTE GOLD. XD

Princess Vylia is growing on me more than in the first book and Sousuke is AMAZING of course, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where their story goes in the next book! I’m kind of internally screaming waiting to find out what happens about Certain Not-Wrapped-Up Plot Points leaving me hanging! O_O

The plot is super exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Court intrigue and peril and a super-satisfying way for certain things to work out and I just loved all of the thingssss! It’s simply an EXCELLENT book in so many ways and it felt like it checked off all the boxes on a list for One of Deborah’s New Favorites.

The setting is also so absolutely vivid and delicious and I just love everything about it. I felt so THERE and the colors and sensations and cool places just made my day! Just love this world so much.

ALSO, I NEED A GRYPHON, THANKS, THAT IS ALL.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book! It’s a new favorite and I want to hug it forever. Check out Emberhawk first, and if you already have, you must read this ASAP! It’s an absolute delight. (Also, I need book three in my life!) Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll just be over here having a book hangover after reading this fabulous book. *all the hearts*

Not gonna be super in-depth here because I don't want to spoil anything since this is book 2. BUT ... I might have liked it more than book 1? And that's saying a L O T. The political twists and turns blow my mind in all of Jamie's books, and this while this was no exception, it still blew my mind. I love all the drama and miscommunication and sneakiness and sarcasm so, so much. Huge fan of all the relationship dynamics (romantic and not) as usual. I really loved having a deaf character in this one and how the thought-speech played into that as well. So yes, coming from someone who doesn't read a lot of YA fantasy, it's another fast-paced, gripping, absolutely stunning book, and I'm so down for the crazy ride in book 3!

2024 reread: WOW! I had forgotten so much of this story. Especially that cliff-hanger ending! This series is fantastic—it’s been so much fun revisiting this story and its characters! Now, I am ready and excited and need book three (Lotusfall, which I’ve already preordered!) to release ASAP so I can find out what happens next!!!

Still a 5⭐️ read!!

••••••••••••

Not sure what happened to my original review for Silverblood from 2021, but am posting it here again.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5 stars)

Excellent sequel to Emberhawk!

I almost wish I had spent the extra time needed to reread the first book before diving into this one, but I quickly recalled most of the first story as I read.

I enjoyed the new character POVs—especially Brooke’s. The first half or so of the story takes place in Jadenvive. A lot of stage-setting takes place, then the second half picks up speed as some characters begin to travel and adventure/conflicts arise.

The world building continues to amaze me, the characters from the first book continue to grow and you learn more about them, you meet a few new interesting characters as well, and the plot is so full of twists and turns! I loved it!

The author does leave you hanging a little bit at the end (most everything is basically wrapped up but then something new happens). But because of this, I am already looking forward to the next book!

(All opinions expressed in this review are honest and my own.)

This is what YA should be. This is why I fell in love with the genre. Sweet romance, high stakes, an intense plot, and characters that I absolutely adore. Also, a story that is just plain fun and enjoyable to read! Silverblood built on Emberhawk and expanded the intricate and completely fascinating magic system even more. I can’t wait for book three to see how it all ends!

I almost feel like I'm cheating, writing a review for this so early, but...as an Alpha reader for this book, as a fan of this trilogy...

ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT IT'S AMAZING. And I may have teared up a few times. And yelled at Ms Foley. And fangirl flailed. And pounded my desk with my fist. And had FEELS. And I cannot wait to have the physical book on my shelf so I can sit back and admire it for the umpteenth time before I re-read it.

I was honored to be brought onto Jamie's beta team to read a working copy of Silverblood. I am holding off on leaving a star rating until I read the final, published version. But I am pumped about this book. Jamie is an excellent writer and world-builder.

I read this not having Emberhawk, the first in the series, and didn’t feel disadvantaged by not having done so. The first half of the story provided sufficient recap that I was able to get a good sense of all that was going on.

Initially, because not a lot happened in the first 50-60% of the story, I began to wonder if this was to be a saggy sequel. Yes, I appreciated the world building and the good texture Foley gave to her characters especially Lysander, Brooke. Kira, Ryon and Vylia, but not a lot happened as Foley set up the remainder of the series.

It takes off in the second half and the cliff hanger finish makes you want to reach immediately for Lotusfall, the next in the series. Alas, it is not available.

The ‘city in the trees’, Jadenvive, was brilliantly portrayed and was fun to experience as a reader. The action when did it take place kept you guessing, and it was easy to start cheering for our heroes in the story due to Foley’s clever character crafting. The romance was well portrayed and simmered for much of the story.

I did enjoy reading the story and am keen for Lotusfall but wonder if this one could have been a little tighter with less build up.

I am honoured to be part of the beta team for SilverBlood. This book slew me with all the feels.
I will keep this review short because you should be buying and reading the book and not wasting your time on reviews (silly person). if you want a book that has phenomenal world building and characters that give you all the feels (even a certain one that I might have been chanting to have die) then SilverBlood is the one for you.
It starts off with the aftermath that happened at the end of the first book Emberhawk, so if you want to read the first book you can, but the second book is easy to follow along even if you have not read the first book.
50 out of 5 stars (subject to change depending on the changes placed in the book. It could go higher).
Go pick up a copy and read it :p

Silverblood does not disappoint. Sometimes the second book in a series is weaker, but Silverblood is not. This story kept the action going the entire time.

So to jump into my review of Silverblood.

I’ll start off with the characters. As in Emberhawk, all of the characters were well done. Silverblood adds three more POV characters, Brooke, Lysander, and Vylia. I really liked all of the new POVs. Jamie did a nice job of keeping all of the characters' voices distinct.

For those of you who wanted Vylia to be featured more in Emberhawk, don’t worry. Vylia features a lot more in Silverblood than she did in Emberhawk, and will definitely be in Lotusfall.

Also, Granny Zelle. I almost laughed out loud during the first scene that Granny Zelle is in. Seriously, she is amazing and hilarious. I need more Granny Zelle. 🙂

As in Emberhawk, the worldbuilding was well done. We get to see more of the worldbuilding in Silverblood, which was super fun. And there is still more worldbuilding yet to be explored, which is awesome.

The plot is great. Jamie did a nice job of balancing all of the plot threads–there is a lot going on in this story. Lots of twists and turns too. It was well done.

(Slight, vague spoilers below)
Some readers might feel like Felix is a Deux ex Machina at a certain point in the plot, but I don’t think he is for a couple of reasons. First off, I was fine with Felix saving a certain character, because I didn’t want that character to die. Also, Jamie has established Felix’s powers before this point in the book, both in Emberhawk and Silverblood. We know what Felix can do, and that it is normal to the story world. We also know that he is present before that scene, and almost waiting to spring into action. So I didn’t find that scene with Felix to be a Deux ex Machina.
(end slight spoilers)

Also, I have a feeling that I’m going to need a seven-years-later epilogue at the end of the series. Those of you who have read Silverblood know why.

And that ending. Let’s just say that I really need to know what’s going to happen in Lotusfall. Because I have a very strong feeling that that book is going to be explosive and awesome.

Cautions: brief attempted assault; five kisses; light/moderate romance; non-graphic moderate/heavy violence

The Katrosi Revolution gets better with each book Foley writes. The romance and blooming romance between side characters is phenomenally done. Clean and heart warming! And the stakes of this vibrant world keep going up with each scene.

A few of my favorite characters in this one were Broke's handmaiden/healer. Loved every second of her quirkiness! And Felix...oh Felix! I probably have a thing for sarcastic characters, I guess. But that fox makes me smile.

Can't wait to read book 3 and 4!!!
Also, I read the audiobook, which I HIGHLY recommend.

Award Winning Sequel

I put off reading Emberhawk thinking it might not be my cup of tea. Then Silver Blood as a sequel won a Realm Award.
I devoured Emberhawk and then Silver Blood. I then bought the books on Audible (one credit, one purchase since it was a bargain price). The narrator is excellent providing distinct accents and voices for each character.
Silver Blood is such a compelling sequel because it focuses on the damaged Lysander, an assassin destined for execution and Brooke the first woman chieftess of her tribe mislabeled a witch.
Of course there’s more Kira and Rion! And threats to the Tribal Alliance on all sides.
This story is well-paced with character development and political intrigue mixed with adventure. I love the multiple POVs and the ending is both satisfying and leaves the reader wanting more. The Realm Award is well-deserved!
Now I need book 3 yesterday!

very good sequel // stakes get higher // lots of characters all going in different directions throughout the story kept the pacing hopping // I missed getting to hang out as much with Kira and Ryon, as Brooke and Lysander took the center stage, though I did enjoy getting to know them better // personally felt that character development stalled out a bit and the pace was almost too fast // I'm very concerned about Felix // did NOT see that ending coming!
