PAWS #1

Gabby Gets It Together

Rate this book
PAWS follows a group of girls with a love of animals but an inability to have any of their own pets who start a dog-walking service.

Meet best friends Gabby Jordan, Priya Gupta, and Mindy Kim. They're different in just about every way--personalities, hobbies, family, and more--but they have a few important things in common: they're all in the same class, they absolutely love animals, and for reasons that are as varied as the trio themselves none of them can actually have any pets.

Unable to resist the adorable temptation any longer, the girls decide to come up with a way to finally get their hands on some furry friends. And, as luck would have it, it seems like their neighborhood is in need of some afterschool dog-walkers. So, just like that, PAWS is born!

But it turns out that running a business is harder than it looks, especially with three co-owners who are such different people. The girls soon argue about everything, from how to prioritize their commitments to the best way to keep their doggy clients happy. And when their fighting ultimately leads to a doggo crisis, will it tear their business and friendship apart or will they be able to get it together to save the day?

Absolutely wonderful! Basically a middle-grade graphic novel similar to Babysitter’s Club but with a focus on three young girls who start a dog walking business together. Wholesome, relatable, and a whole lot of fun.

I read a preview copy of this graphic novel for younger readers (8-12). This book might be a good way to get reluctant readers in the door. I did not care for this book. It is about friendship and manipulation. I didn't like the ways the girls interacted with each other, their families, or their use of words like doggos and puppers. Maybe I am just too old. People seem to think readers who enjoy The Babysitters Club will like this book.

There are three friends from diverse families and background, Gabby, Priya, and Mindy. They love animals and spend time looking at videos on line of them. For different reasons, none of them are allowed to have pets. They end up starting a dog walking service. They run into problems and fight about everything. I know it is supposed to be about friendship and working things out, blah blah blah, but this whole book really fell short for me and just seemed kind of hollow. Sure, it does have good topics for discussion ( friendship, how to come up with solutions, listening and considering others, etc.). But I didn't even like the girls. They were all mean and bratty.
Not my cup of tea.

Pretty good. I'm not much of a comic person but it was readable. But jeez, these girls are annoying! They just fight about everything and two of them sometimes team up on poor Gabby :(. I wouldn't like friends like that.

First Read December 2022

2 stars (it was okay)

So I might be biased since I don't really like dogs... Also, the hype around this book made my expectations pretty high.

It's a decent story. I bet I will have students who really like it. But I wasn't a fan of how the girls treated one another. I didn't like all the slang. But the most annoying part was the random bold words throughout the entire book.

It does have a good message about solving conflict. It's definitely not a terrible book, it's just not a new favorite for me.

Reread October 2024

Forgot to actually log this when I did the reread so I'm writing this in December.

3 stars (I liked it)

Definitely liked this book more when I had to read it for battle of the books. I like the it's kind of like the baby-sitters club with the kids creating their own business. But I think dog walking is a little more age appropriate for middle grade. Even though I don't love dogs, the inclusion of different dogs and breeds makes the story more fun and engaging.

Loved this new graphic novel, and excited to see it’ll be a series! I’ve seen it marketed as The Babysitters Club with pets, and I absolutely agree.

Gabby, Priya, and Mindy are three BFFs who adore pets but can’t actually own them. After a few failed attempts to secure some doggo time, they find that their neighborhood is in need of afternoon dog walkers. BOOM! Paws, their business, is born!

But…running a business isn’t as easy as it looks, and soon the three besties are fighting about everything. Can their business (and friendship) be saved?

As a 4/5th grade classroom teacher who’s infusing SEL into lessons, this book lends itself to discussions on problem solving, taking other’s perspective, and active listening.

Highly recommend, and excited for book 2!

I am *crazy* about Katie the Catsitter so Paws: Gabby Gets it Together will be perfect to hand kids when they finish the KtC duo and beg for more! Friendship, pets, & teamwork - plus loved the brilliance of a fashion montage in a graphic novel! (The themes of apologizing & forgiveness - plus TONS of adorable puppy scenes - are bonuses!)

1.5/5 ⭐

I'm a huge fan of middle grade graphic novels, but this one didn't work for me as well as I wanted it to. I definitely think it has appeal for younger readers.

Gabby Gets It Together follows three friends who love animals. Unfortunately, due to family circumstances none of them can own a pet. In order to remedy their situation, they decide to start a dog walking business. Though it seems simple as first, the trio soon realizes the complexity of their situation and their friendship begins to suffer.

Honestly, this is one of those situations where it's me more so than the book. I'm not the intended audience, but the story didn't captivate me in any way. I like that middle grade readers will get the opportunity to see both conflict and conflict resolution, but beyond that I'm not sure that the story did anything that was necessarily innovative. There are so many titles that cover the idea of pet sitting and this one didn't bring a fun and/or interesting element to make it different. I may pick up the second one in the series from the library, but I haven't made my mind up just yet.

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Books for the review copy of this book. PAWS by Nathan Fairbairn is a really cute book. It is reminiscent of the Babysitters Club books by Ann M. Martin, as the main character and her friends start a club business. In this book, the girls decide that walking dogs is the best way to be able to get some time to hang out with dogs since they are unable to have pets.

Throughout the graphic novel, there are many problems the girls must troubleshoot, and their parents are very supportive. The illustrations are engaging and add so much to the story. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to my students!

This will be a new favorite series for readers. It's billed as a Babysitters Club for dogs and that is exactly it. Three friends dog walking multiple dogs. What could go wrong?
The big problem I have with this one is the Asian character being illustrated with half-moon eyes when she's laughing and just black circles when she's showing extreme emotion. Not. Ok.

Holy heck this was precious. It seemed aimed a little younger than the usual middle-grade graphic novels, but it was fun and energetic; great art and colours, terrific writing, fun characters, and a super wholesome story. Honestly, my absolute favourite thing were the Instagram posts at the end (and Gabby's dad commenting on every picture haha, it was a nice touch.) This was just too cute for words, and I will read any book about these Pretty Awesome WalkerS.

In this graphic novel, Gabby and her friends Priya Gupta and Mindy Kim LOVE animals, but can't have pets because of family allergies or living arrangements. They decide that watching YouTube videos of animals isn't enough, and they need to try to intereact with real animals. They try searching their neighborhood for animals who need to be rescued, to no avail, are turned away from volunteering at a shelter because they are too young, and decide that volunteering at a vet practice is too sad. When they see a dog peering at them through the windows of a house, they are enthralled, and very glad to make the acquaintance of Pickles' owner, a woman who works long hours at her tattoo parlor. She agrees to pay them $10 a day to walk Pickles, and the girls decide to develop a business. They put up flyers and get a number of dogs to walk, but run into a variety of problems. One of the mothers is allergic to dog fur, which leads to a whole process of changing clothes, and at one point, the girls go to a thrift store to obtain "uniforms" for their dog walking. (I'm with you, Mindy! I get all of my clothes from the thrift store, too!) There are also scheduling problems, and the girls find that they don't get to spend as much time together since the dogs have different needs and can't be walked together. School and sports schedules interfere as well, and there are some difficulties with people feeling underappreciated that lead to some fights. Will the girls be able to figure out their business model and make PAWS succeed?
Strengths: This is set in Vancouver, and has a nice neighborhood feel to it. I liked the brief descriptions of the girls' families and different parenting styles, and the parents show up just enough to offer support in a realistic way. The girls truly love animals and want what is best for them, but struggle to balance this with their own needs. The illustration style will be popular with fans of Jamieson and Holms, and the Canadian setting is great to see, and will delight fans of Goerz' Shirley and Jamila. I did especially enjoy that Priya was a soccer player and cross country star. (And yes, those two are hard to schedule at the same time!)
Weaknesses: Children setting up a dog walking business has gotten a lot of coverage in middle grade literature, but almost always with female entrepreneurs, so the plot was fairly standard.
What I really think: This is a good graphic novel to go along with Venable's Katie the Catsitter, Lloyd and Nutter's Allergic, Miller's Besties: Work it Out or Lai's Pawcasso.

Gabby Gets It Together was an enjoyable read following a group of girls who set up their own dog-walking service.

Best friends Gabby Jordan, Priya Gupta, and Mindy Kim all have different interests but they do have one thing in common: they absolutely love animals even though none of them can have pets. In order to be around animals, the girls decide to start their own dog-walking business after school. But it turns out running a business isn't as easy as they thought it would be, particularly since they all have different ideas on how it should be done. When their fighting leads to a dog emergency, the girls will have to pull together to save their furry clients.

When I saw the PAWS series being advertised as the Baby-Sitters Club for pets, I knew I wanted to check these books out as I was a huge BSC reader growing up. The premise of the book was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the various ideas the girls came up with to hang out with animals before they settled on dog-walking. With the three girls being so different, it wasn't a surprise that there was some friction after they started the business and because they're kids, they didn't handle it well. I do think a lot of their resentment towards each other could have been avoided had they worked out a better plan from the get-go but considering they're all in the 10-12 age range, I get why it wasn't a well thought out plan. I did like how the girls eventually worked out their issues and they became better friends to each other as a result.

The art style in this graphic novel was great and I really enjoyed the bright, colorful illustrations. Each girl is different from the others and that came across very well. The illustrations of the dogs were quite adorable and I liked that they all had their own unique personalities.

Overall Gabby Gets It Together was a good start to the series and I would highly recommend the book for readers in the target age range.

This was super cute!!! Gabby, Priya and Mindy are BFF's and they LOVE animals. None of them can own a pet for different reasons so they come up with a solution. These 3 girls team up to make their very own dog walking business and call it Paws. It starts out small, but slowly they get more clients. And with the business growing so do the problems. The girls must work together to come up with solutions with the help of their parents and most importantly each other. This graphic novel is sure to be a hit with the kids. The illustrations in this were so great. I loved the colors and the style. And the dogs were adorable!

Thanks to Netgalley for providing a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

Yeah, if you like that book series and show about a club of babysitters, you'll probably dig this.

Focuses a lot on the interpersonal struggles of the group of friends, as well as the logistical challenges of actually doing something like this.

Full color graphic novel, apparently the first of a series.

I liked that this club had an involved parent, who happens to be a successful fantasy author.

Based on the author bios on the flap, Fairbairn "started writing PAWS, his middle grade debut, as a way to share his passion for comics and storytelling with his daughter." Which I read as implying that the story originated with him. So it's interesting to me that Assarasakorn is listed first on the cover and flap bios. I note that Fairbairn is the only one listed here. Interesting.

Might take it out to schools next round.
