Jill McDonald has written and illustrated Hello, World! Garden Time beautifully. This informative picture book is for children from infants to three years old. If you are considering starting a garden with your young children, you should start by reading this book to your children. This book is a wonderful way to introduce children to gardening. Jill McDonald’s book explains to children what gardening is, where gardens grow, what happens to the seeds, the process of planting, insects that help in gardening, how to take care of a garden, and the best part of gardening (eating what you worked so hard to grow). Yes, Hello, World! Garden Time may even encourage your children to eat their fruits and vegetables. This book explores gardening from seed to the table. Jill McDonald uses different fonts, colors, and shapes to highlight special words in the story. There are also definitions of key gardening vocabulary words. The illustrations show children they can do all the work in a garden. All the illustrations are bright and bold, helping to draw the children’s attention to them. The happy and excited expressions of the children in the illustrations help encourage children to garden. I am rating this book five stars because it is written and illustrated in such a way that it will encourage children to go out and explore gardening for themselves.
Tonight was our first time reading Garden Time from the Hello World Series by Jill McDonapd. I honestly felt like it was very similar to “How Do Apples Grow?”. A brief mention of photosynthesis without using the term “photosynthesis” and pictures of tools and the progression of seedlings and roots. The thing I did like about this book was the mention of worms and how they help provide plants with nutrients.
This is surprisingly informative for a simple board book, with the text delving into seed germination, the parts of a plant, and the importance of insects to the life of a garden. The author's brilliantly colored illustrations are a real treat! I LOVED this one!

Jill McDonald has written and illustrated a beautiful, bright, and bold board book full of interesting and engaging gardening facts that are perfect for young readers. It’s a great introduction to gardening and plant growth. Highly recommended.
A great one for teaching little ones about the world that is the Garden, encouraging exploring and teaches facts about how plants grow and how gardening in turn, feeds us. Beautiful colourful illustrations.
Although a board book in format, the text and concepts can work well for a preschool story time. Used for my spring gardening story time and it went very well. Lots of interesting facts for the preschool age crowd.
I liked looking at the different vegetables and fruits. I’ve tried a lot of them already. Momma said we can plant some next year and we’ll read this book again!
Hello, World! Garden Time is a wonderful first look at gardening---how seeds are planted and how they grow, the parts of plants, interactions of plants with earthworms and pollinators...everything a little person might like to know about growing plants.
It's a lovely way to share the joy of gardening, the joy of the outdoors, with young children.
