What happens when you mix a shot of rum with a dash of charm?
Audrey just wants to move on and rebuild from a marriage gone wrong. Now she’s focused on launching a local rum distillery into the mainstream, proving to her boss, and herself, she can do it all. She certainly doesn’t need another guy swooping in, thinking he can save her, no matter how irresistible he—or his smile—is. So, when a one-night stand starts turning into something more, she’s determined to enjoy the buzz, but keep away from the hangover.
Jackson has the luck of the draw—good looks, charm, a hit TV show—and whenever he’s not chasing his next star turn, he’s getting some action off the screen. He’s set … or so he thought. For the first time, he’s tempted to ask a woman for more than one night, but she’s already decided he’s better cast as the playboy Casanova than the man at the end of the aisle.
While Jackson’s intent on proving to Audrey he’s the one for her, she’s looking for every way he’s not.

[I received a physical copy for an honest review] Love & Rum is the debut novel for author Dani McLean. A romance story between a celebrity whose never been in a serious relationship before and a divorce who's not looking to fall in love. "Why did he have to go and be all funny and charming and utterly frustrating to the point he had buried himself in my heart and found a home there."
When her unhappy marriage ends, Audrey tries online dating to no success, so she decides to change course and decides to go the one-night stand route. Enter Jackson, an actor who for many reasons doesn't do relationships. They have instant chemistry, but their one-night stand turns into a repeat and then into a casual relationship. Very quickly, casual turns into much more and Audrey is having trouble from it overtaking her life and affecting her work. Jackson is all in and wants her for the long haul, but knows Audrey is hesitant to be official. Will Audrey take the chance that she'll be able to hold on to herself and her independence if she's in a relationship with Jackson, or will she run when he lays his heart on the table. "I wanted to hear her laugh, light and airy. Pull her close and wrap my arms around her. I wanted all the moments outside of sex - the conversations, the kisses, the quiet."
This was an easy romance with likeable characters, while a little cheesy and predictable, yet it was still enjoyable. What was missing for me was the drama, you would think with Jackson being an actor there would have been something crazy, but there wasn't. There was only Audrey's lack of communication and the issues that arise when one person wants a relationship and the other doesn't. Jackson stole the show for me with his honesty and attentiveness towards Audrey. I believed his quick fall into love and was routing for him along the way. Audrey on the other hands was frustrating. I understand why she didn't want a relationship, but her lack of communication made me want to shake her. Jackson lays it all bare and she savagely crushes him, and I felt she should have done a bit more groveling at the end. Together, though, they were really sweet, and I loved the consent and communication in their initial one-night stand scene. Just because it's a one-night stand doesn't mean you don't need to be respectful. Love & Rum by Dani McLean is a charming romance with plentiful steamy intimate scenes and a happily ever after.
Love & Rum was a sweet and fun book that kept me quite entertained for a while. From the beginning on, I couldn't stop smiling and giggling, and I'm happy to say that this continued on until I finished reading this book.
With imperfect yet lovable characters being all flirtatious one minute and tooth-achingly sweet the next, there isn't much to complain about. (Well, except that thing at the 80% mark that made me want to slap Audrey and comfort Jackson)
Dani McLean most definitely gave us a kickass heroine (and an even more kickass best friend) you can't help but love, even though (please forgive me) I wanted to throw my tablet at her at the 80% mark for being such a FOOL. And yes, oh god did I LOVE Jackson. My sweet baby!
I always love to see relationships other than the main romantic ones, and this book did not disappoint. Audrey and Tiffany's friendship (of which I am jealous), Jackson's relationship with his family, his sister especially, and all the other work-related ones really made me enjoy this book even more.
If you're looking for a steamy book, this book might not meet THOSE standards (especially if you're used to - uhum - mafia and MC books). But if you're in the mood for a fun, sweet and quick book that's not just focused on love or sex sex sex, this would be a great pick for you!
If there's one thing (or technically two) that I had to get used to in the beginning, it would be the style of writing and the way the dialogue was written. It wasn't bad by any means, I just had to get used to it for a chapter or two. I guess that comes with picking up a new book by an author you've only recently discovered. Again, this is just my personal opinion and others might and probably do, think differently about this.
All in all, such a great book and I'm so excited to read more of Dani McLean's work!

4.5 stars Fantastic debut, I loved the chemistry, the vulnerability of both characters. Jackson particularly fascinated me and although this started with casual sex I loved the way the characters doubts and fears and their growing feelings for each other developed. Plus a great cast of secondary characters And the sex scenes sizzled off the page. I'm so glad this is a series so I can look forward to more of Dani McLean's romance writing.
i'm very tired of white cishet romance novels that use the same tropes over and over again. that, and i'd already read the third book in this series first, and wasn't as invested in the romance plotline because i found the author's romance formula repetitive.

This book was really cute! There were some cheesy moments, and I thought Jackson's character could have been developed a little more, but overall this was an enjoyable read! I recommend it if you're looking for something easy, quick, and fun.
Also, I enjoyed Tiff as a side character, so I'm looking forward to reading her story in the second book.
Audrey wants to start living her life once again since her divorce was finalized a year back. She isn't ready for anything serious, so her best friend Tiffany hooks her up with someone at the bar for a casual time. Audrey is all in for casual sex, so why does she keep thinking about that man?
Jackson keeps busy with his grueling schedule as an actor in a hit TV show. He doesn't do serious relationships. They are demanding. He feels he has met the perfect person for another one night stand, but this woman has him wanting more. Something permanent.
Audrey is still scarred from her previous marriage, and the emotional abuse she went through. It was subtle, always hinted upon, but it wasn't a healthy way of continuing with life. Jackson was always supportive of her in everything, however his shortcomings were his own lack of experience. I still felt he was a darling throughout.
Jackson is such a good character, and I like how within the story Audrey appreciates him till the end. It is rare to see the male lead so open towards what he wants, and the efforts he makes with Audrey. He knows there are certain things he cannot do due to his fame, but he compensates. I love how in his thoughts he is true to himself even if sometimes it caused him pain.
I was invested in all the side characters, and how the author explored Audrey and Jackson's lives individually as well. The small details in their interactions. Their inside jokes. I love the simplicity of the story, yet it has difficult aspects woven so well. Love and rum read so smoothly and the story flowed beautifully.
I received an ARC for Love and Rum from the BookSirens in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun romance with minimum drama: a one night stand that becomes something more, with two career-driven-types who don't know if they can handle the demands of a relationship. My only real complaint is that Jackson didn't seem to have any flaws, which made him less interesting as a leading man. Don't get me wrong, his chemistry with Audrey was incredible, and I was rooting for them the whole time. I loved Audrey's friendship with Tiff, the no-nonsense bartender/mixologist. This was a quick read, and I look forward to reading more from McLean!

The story Audrey’s been divorced for a year and she is just about ready to start dating, but it’s tough out there. Her best friend, mixologist Tiff, suggests a casual one night stand, and then suggests Audrey come into the bar when actor Jackson is there. A one night stand turns into a two night stand but since neither are quite ready to give up what they have going, the relationship keeps developing.
My thoughts I have read the eARCs of books two and three in this series, and took advantage of reading book one in Kindle Unlimited. The stories are a little spicy, and this debut from Dani McLean is also pretty sweet. I enjoyed the way that Audrey and Jake both started out wanting an uncomplicated relationship but couldn’t stop themselves from thinking of each other. Their relationship grows and develops as they do, and as they are able to tackle their own weak spots. It’s a cute read ❤️
Read on Kindle Unlimited My rating 4/5 - ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Note - I received a digital arc of this book for free ; a courtesy of Book Sirens on the basis of which this review has been posted voluntarily. This is an honest opinion of mine. P.S. the post is a little long so do bear with it.
Rating - 5 stars
Disclaimer - This book contains strong language, sex/nudity, mild kink discussion and references to past emotional abuse.
When it comes to the romance genre, I am someone who prefers to watch than read them. If at all, I do decide to read romance genre, then it is usually a part of fantasy fiction, classics or rom - coms i.e. basically stories with a good plot apart from mere romance. For someone who tends to cringe at hardcore romance novels that have sexual intercourse and fornication as the crux of the story ; at times by just a glance at blurbs, the above disclaimer in the book was a serious speed breaker which did make me doubt as to should I even read the book or not. But the book blurb was quite appealing that I finally decided to give it a shot. And I did not regret it even a bit. Because it simply was that good !!! I would have practically devoured the book in a day hadn't I got busy with my work as it was so addictive. Before I elaborate further, I would really like to thank Book Sirens for a chance to review this book and author Dani Mclean for penning down such an amazing story.
Love and Rum is the story of protagonists Audrey Adams and Jackson Wards ; both different yet similar in ways unknown to even them. Audrey is a senior regional sales manager for Bespoke Beverages - a company that works on branding local alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages while Jackson is a rising TV star. Both are at the best phase of their careers and are always career oriented to an extent of borderline obsession that they do not have time for establishing rock solid relationships outside of their work apart from family. But the catch here is that - Audrey is a divorcee from a failed marriage that broke down due to emotional abuse from her ex Brad while Jackson struts around like cassanova ; making headlines every other day for his playboy image as he feels that he does not have the time to commit to a serious relationship. The story practically starts off with the readers being introduced to Audrey's long time closest friend Tiffany - a bartender trying to set her up on one - night stands to get her back into the dating field once again. So when Jackson becomes one of the prospect suitors in Tiffany's radar during a casual encounter between the trio at the bar where Tiffany works - that is where the picture actually begins. Casual conversation between Audrey and Jackson at the bar end up in a one-night stand which slowly starts to mean so much more to the duo with the passage of time. Things escalate to a point where they start to realize that they are actually falling in love but between their careers, their inbitions to accept this as a solid relation than a mere infatuation from one night stands, this is one hell of a rollercoaster for the duo as they try to address the elephant in the room. And when Jackson finally accepts the reality and becomes intent on proving to Audrey that he’s the one for her, she’s looking for every way he’s not. When they unite or not after addressing the various internal dilemmas they possess form the overall crux of the story.
The narrative is so fluid that I could practically envision the story like a Netflix romedy film in my head and I enjoyed it every bit. Each and every character in the story had a concrete character sketch that mimics reality. Readers will end up relating to some one from the story - that is the level of realism in the story. I loved how the characters of Audrey and Jackson were conceived and slowly built over the course of the story. I absolutely appreciate how the author gave her leads certain quirks which translated over into being a root factor for certain actions and behaviors during conflicts in the story between the leads. I was able to relate to Audrey on so many grounds - her reason for giving importance to career over relationships, her insecurities in trusting people and handing over the reins of her life to a special someone and so much more. Audrey is a no - nonsense practical and mature woman who values her career and relationships on equal grounds which is why many a times, I felt that Audrey was practically mirroring decisions that I would have taken if in her position. Infact there was an instance in the story where over the top confrontation would have been inevitable but Audrey and Jackson chose to talk it over and then split before stomping in huff and breaking up.
The book also addresses gay romance too in a superbly subtle manner. Editing was perfect although I just noted a single spell error. Apart from that, a point of concern I felt was Audrey 's full name was mentioned throughout the story as Audrey Adams, but in just one section, it was referred as Audrey Kings ; giving a confusion over what her surname exactly is.
This is purely a standalone read and is simply a fabulous multi time read for all those die hard romance fans aged 18+. I am really looking forward to reading more by Dani Mclean. Since the title actually quotes the book as a part of the The Cocktail Series Book 1, I would really love to read more in the series featuring Audrey and Jackson.
Trigger warnings: sex and nudity (graphic), mild emotional abuse references, profanity, mild kink discussion, subtle gay references
Audrey wasn't ready for anything more than casual sex, or so she thought. This is a good book for any romance lover to read. I've already recommended it to my sister.
There are times when a reader wants to get cozy, have a drink (or three) and enjoy a sweet and sexy romance book. This one is a good one for that. The characters are fun, there is a good story line not just steamy scenes, and a happy ending that brings warm fuzzy feelings.
A pretty average read. Jackson felt kind of bland and Audrey felt a little too skittish for me to really connect with her. Cool job though! 2.5/5 stars.
This book is cute. I enjoyed how these characters mixed. I could see this book like a movie in my mind. I enjoyed it. I highly recommend reading this book!
Enjoyed this more than I expected! I really liked that it was a chill read with low stakes which made it a relaxing romance to read. The conflict that had was not the miscommunication trope but seemed like a realistic fight this couple could have had. Also, I love a hero who is so IN LOVE!
It’s been one year since Audrey got her divorce and she’s ready to move on. Jackson has never been in a serious relationship because he’s too busy acting in a hit TV show and he’s never wanted more than a one-night stand. Audrey just wants something casual and Jackson is just the man for the job! First, the one-night stand turns into something casual. Then they start to develop feelings for each other. Is Audrey really ready to move on? Is Jackson really ready for a long-term relationship?
Love & Rum is a slow to develop romance for the reader even though it is hot and fast for the two main characters. The two main characters, Jackson and Audrey, are complex, fully formed, and well-rounded characters. During the course of the novel, they both grow personally as well as together in their relationship. There is a perfect balance of narrative devoted to their separate lives and their growing relationship together as a couple. When they are together, a lot of the focus is on their physical relationship. This makes sense since they originally met as a one-night stand and progress to casual sex at the beginning of their relationship.
Though a lot of the time Jackson and Audrey spend together is spent physically, the scenes are exceptionally well written. The sex scenes are very steamy but still feature consensual and communicative sex as the norm. I really, really enjoyed the emotional component and the running commentary of the characters during these scenes.
Both Audrey and Jackson tell their story with their own chapter POVs. The POV switching was seamless between the two characters and balanced quite well by the author.
Understated but not overlooked is the diversity of sexual preferences in this book.
Though I absolutely loved both Audrey and Jackson as well as their individual journeys, I could not get enough of best friend Tiff. Everyone needs a best friend like her and I can’t wait to read her story (assuming she has her own book in this Cocktail Series.
The plot appears simple but the story is told well, the characters are emotionally gripping, and the scenes are well chosen. I could see where the climax was coming from immediately but the ending was emotionally satisfying and optimistic. The extra chapters at the end that tied up the narrative serving as an epilogue were well placed and I appreciated having a completed and full ending.
This romance novel will appeal to most romance readers who enjoy dual POV, lots of steamy sex scenes, and a happy ending.
I can’t wait to read the next novel by this author and/or in this series.
Dani McLean’s Love & Rum is exactly a what you see is what you get kind of book. It’s a light read with a cliché storyline as expected, but it was entertaining to say the least, giving it a 2 star rating.
I chose this book as my next read mainly because I wanted to feel the good kind of familiarity I usually get when it comes to reading romcom books. However, if I’m going to be honest here, I got bored for most part of the story. I mean I knew right from the start that this was going to be predictable with a happily ever after. Still, even if it’s common, it’s always the chemistry and connection between our main characters that make it different. So when it comes to our main characters Audrey and Jackson, sad to say, I found their chemistry typical and somewhat plain-jane.
Moreover, what made me felt lacking in this book was the lack of discussion about our main characters’s professions. I was kind of looking forward to the Hollywood life of Jackson or even learning more about Rum from Audrey’s perspective. But both of these disappointed me in such a way I felt like they were simply glossed over, not really giving us anything more aside from that fact that Jackson is an actor and Audrey is an Accounts Manager for an alcoholic beverage company. I know it’s not the main focus of the story, but I thought at least I’d be given more interesting facts about Hollywood and making movies, some behind-the-scenes action, or some cool recipes or twists that you can make with Rum. But in my opinion, this became a missed opportunity to give the story a bit more of an edge.
Overall, Love & Rum is a light-hearted romcom read, and it’s something I’d recommend to those who are looking for something predictable and easy. And while some others may like these kind of stories more than I do, I guess the only other reason why I gave it a mere two star rating is because this was just not one of those books that got me feeling excited and got me looking forward to reading it. I’ve read too many romcom books before this, and to be honest, it’s just that I’ve read other better ones. Aside from that, I have no issues whatsoever against the author or even the story itself as I write this review. So even if I didn’t like this as much, you should still definitely give it a try.
