In 1914, Frederick left the family’s home in Bendigo Victoria to work in Melbourne, where he met Vida Bunting who soon became pregnant by him. Fred panicked, and joined the army as a Field Ambulance Soldier, soon to be shipped overseas to war zones. Vida’s father tracked down the young Fred and a marriage followed, six weeks before Fred was shipped overseas, to serve in Gallipoli and later Europe. Vida was hidden away, until she had been married for nine months. Fred arrived home after four years, meeting his daughter Nina, for the first time. He had trouble settling down but eventually took up a soldier’s settlement block in Stanhope Victoria .Life was not without its' hardships and tragedies which affected many lives beyond this family.
