Whenever You're Ready: How to Compose the Life of Your Dreams

Rate this book
Jeeyoon Kim is a professional concert pianist who has performed in venues like Carnegie Hall, the Chamber Music Society in San Francisco, and the Stradivari Society in Chicago. As an accomplished performing artist and award-winning music educator, she credits her success to key disciplines, practices, and mindsets that she lives out every day. In Whenever You’re Ready, she gives readers a personal glimpse into her life, shares wisdom and insights she’s gained from her experiences, and shows people how to achieve their own personal and professional success.

Structured like one of the concerts she performs, this self-help book starts with a prelude and contains five movements, each focused on a different theme, such as forming habits and boosting creativity. Each movement is followed by a quick intermission that takes readers through a mini master class to help them gain an appreciation of classical music.

Before every performance, Jeeyoon prepares herself mentally, emotionally, and physically in the green room. She knows she’ll soon step onto the stage, where people have come to see what she has to offer the world. In the final moment when she’s backstage and about to meet her audience, she notes that someone, with their hand on the stage door, always waits for her cue. “Whenever you’re ready . . .” they tell her. She nods, they open the door, and it’s time for her to perform.

This book is about helping readers prepare themselves mentally, emotionally, and physically for their own performances. Whether they are hoping to land a job, practicing for a speech, training for a marathon, or trying to accomplish a goal, Jeeyoon’s book will offer them advice, encouragement, and practical exercises they can use to help them perform at their best and achieve their dreams. With warmth, honesty, and compassion, Jeeyoon speaks to readers who are in their own green rooms and invites them to live the life they hope for.

This book is part self-help book & part autobiography, but don’t let that put you off!
The self-help parts are lessons learnt from her life and she shares these with the reader/listeners but also challenges them with little habits or exercises they can try. She is realistic, understanding that not everybody can or will be a concert pianist but also acknowledging that with focus, you can face seemingly huge hurdles or impossible situations by breaking them into manageable chunks and focussing only on the next chunk! The title of the book comes from the moments immediately before a performance when she is backstage. Somebody will open the door and say “Whenever you’re ready . . .” - Jeeyoon uses this phrase to challenge the readers to take their own steps in life, whether this is to reach a goal, meet a challenge or develop a new habit.

The book is structured rather like a concert performance with a series of movements separated by intermissions. This really worked as she focussed on different aspects in each “movement” and the intermissions gave you time to digest the content before a change of pace/direction to the next topic. I will definitely be exploring Jeeyoons YouTube channel & Podcast as she references these in the text and they seem like great companions to this book.
The audiobook was narrated by the author & it truly feels like a conversation with her. The pace is perfect, and her gentle voice is almost soothing. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Disclosure: I received an advance reader copy of this book free via NetGalley. Whilst thanks go to the author & publisher for the opportunity to read it, all opinions are my own.

This is a wonderful book by first time author and concert pianist, Jeeyoon Kim. It is a “how to” when what it is you want to do is “live your best life.” Jeeyoon recounts experiences from her life as a young piano student in South Korea, as an immigrant to the United States to pursue graduate studies in piano performance (PhD) and pedagogy (Masters), and in her post-university career as a concert pianist, a teacher, a YouTuber, an entrepreneur, and a person who is always growing and looking for the “next challenge.” The mistakes she has made, the lessons she has learned, and the insights she has attained, are all here.

The book is intriguingly organized like a concert, with five movements, and even an encore at the end! Following each of the first four movements is an “Intermission,” with information about one of her favorite works from Chopin, Brahms, Debussy and Schubert.

The title, “Whenever You’re Ready,” comes from words spoken to Jeeyoon by the stage manager at Carnegie Hall as he stood ready to open the door for her to enter the biggest stage of her career. With this title, Jeeyoon invites her readers to fully embrace the stage, the challenges, and the opportunities in each of their own lives.

At bottom, this book is well crafted, eminently readable, and full of inspiration. It was a pleasure to read, and I highly recommend it!

I found this book a joy to read. The tone was positive, informative, and inspiring. Jeeyoon Kim is a pianist and the word choices and stories shared make that obvious if the cover didn't, but I think everyone could benefit from reading this.

This was a book that I really needed to read right now. Right before I received my copy, my life started falling apart on so many levels. And although I am still trying to deal with the fallout, reading this book helped me shift my perspective and remember that this crisis is only temporary and that I need to keep positive as I work toward the life I want to live. It helped me remember what's important.

I received a free advanced copy from the publisher and this is my honest review. The publisher also sent two cd's of Jeeyoon Kim's music that I've been listening to frequently.

I had the pleasure of reading two wonderful life guides at the same time and that's such a nice feeling. This book is structured in movements and it was so fun to feel Jeeyoon's passion for music throughout the book. I like the set up in movements and then chapters because it makes each little lesson digestible. It's a book that I think of as a reference book, one that you own and keep returning to when you need that little tidbit or reminder.

A lot of the ideas in here aren't necessarily new, but they're presented in a way that rings novel and refreshing. Now to go try and find Jeeyoon everywhere:)

I received this audio book via NetGalley in exchange of an honest review.

I LOVED it.
Jeeyoon Kim is a pianist. She has a YouTube channel and a podcast called "Journey Through Classical Piano". In this book she shared her life experience and how piano was the centerpiece, and the lessons she learned through it, which could work with any life aspect.
It's a self-help book and an auto-biography.

The audio book was narrated by the author herself. I loved listening to her soothing narration and her cute accent.

Sometimes you find the book that just makes you “feel good” and you are at a loss for words.

Jee-yoon Kim, talented pianist, shares her thoughts on life and strategies/practices for becoming successful no matter what you study. I loved the structure of this book as it is divided into movements and intermissions, rather than chapters.

It is explained that when Kim is backstage, just before going out to perform for a concert, someone will prompt her by saying, “Whenever you’re ready…” she carries this message with her through her writing by explaining to readers how to tackle new challenges/meet new goals “whenever they are ready.”

Kim comes across as such a genuine and kind spirit, and I feel like I do after a meditation session by just listening to her speak in this audiobook.

Whenever You're Ready is the self-help book I did not know I needed it. Honestly, I chose to read this book before reading its description because I liked its cover. Once I realized that it was a self-help book, I feared it would be slow and boring. However, I am happy to confirm that my worst fears did not come true. It happened exactly the opposite. This book was really easy to read, the advice it contains seems sound, and it is interesting because tells a little bit about the author's life as a professional pianist. Even though I am not a musician, I did not have a problem relating to some of the author's troubles, and I loved that the book format was like a concert program. Actually, it made me want to play the piano again after 10 years. I am looking forward to applying everything I learned in this book. Highly recommended!

Thanks to NetGalley and Greenleaf Book Group, I had the opportunity to read the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Absolutely delightful book! I don’t gravitate toward self-help type books but was intrigued by this book. I was initially drawn in by the cover and was happily surprised that I really enjoyed the content as well.

Being this was the audio version of the book I wasn’t sure how I would be able to absorb the information being provided as I was intending that I would be wanting to look back and review things like a workbook. That was not an issue at all. The “lessons” are very practical and well explained. The pace of the book is quite beautiful as well. I loved how the introduction explains the way the author has designed and paced the book for the reader. I felt very accepted and welcomed into the text and didn’t feel overwhelmed or annoyed that things were unreasonable or unrealistic.

One of the best aspects of this audio book is the narration. The author has a beautifully soothing voice that is quite relaxing and enjoyable. I found it fascinating to hear her experiences and how she utilizes and applies her lessons in her own everyday life.

In total, if you like self help, self exploration books you will enjoy this. If you’re hesitant about the genre give it a try and you may find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Whenever You're Ready is a self-help book with an easy tone. Jeeyoon Kim is an award-winning classical pianist and she takes you through the ideas, exercises, and advice that has helped her through her life.

Whenever You're Ready is taken from the term she told when it's time for her to take the stage. The book mimics a classical concert with different Movements where she discusses her life and provides exercises and Intermissions where she talks about the music that she loves. The Encore circles around beautifully and the structure is one of the book's great selling points. However, it is not the only one.

When it comes to tone, this is one of the best self-help books I've read. While Kim is confident, her writing is not harsh. She doesn't demand you follow her ideas nor does she judge for any behavior that might not be helpful. The memoir lets you connect with Kim and see that you too can make changes-whenever you are ready.

There are two things that I don't like. Whoever decided almost every page needed a pull quote and some even multiple. It's distracting and takes away from the best pieces of advice. Your eyes automatically go to them keeping you from staying connected to what you are reading.

The other issue is personal. In the last movement, Kim takes on emotional and spiritual well-being. At each junction, she declares these things are what helped her and the reader should experiment but doesn't promise it will work as well for them. I usually wouldn't mind if we disagreed, but she uses the words “walking” and “anti-depressant” together. I am happy for her that walking makes lifts her spirits; it does for me too but it doesn't cure my depression. The continued push of the idea that nature is good and drugs are bad continues to stigmatize mental health. I don't think Kim meant to do that but even without the intention, the damage is there.

That being said, I want to leave this review on a happy note. Overall, I loved this book. I loved the way Kim connected with the reader. The writing speaks directly to you and though I have not heard her speak, I can imagine the voice in my head sounding patient and kind just like some of my favorite school teachers. This level of personalizaation is also in Kim's music as making that connection is important to her. I've heard it works for her music and it absolutely works for the book as well.

Whenever You're Ready is a great self-help book and is something I would recommend especially to those new to the genre. I, in fact, have been ready for several ideas she has proposed.

I received an ARC from the publisher; all opinions are my own.

Book Review: Whenever You’re Ready

Whenever You’re Ready

Jeeyoon Kim

Greenleaf Book Group Press

Publishing Date August.24.2021

Nonfiction/Self Help

I was given an early readers copy of Whenever You’re Ready through Greenleaf Book Greoup for my honest review which is as follows:

In Whenever You are Ready Jeeyoon Kim reminds us of the important of creating habit in order for us to find success in our careers and or passions, because doing something consistently becomes easier than doing it only sporadically. It is pointed out too, that it’s not willpower alone that will get us to where we want to be, but habit as well.

The author goes on to point out that the real joy is not about the destination, but the journey that is taken to get to success. It is pointed out too the importance of accepting the ever changing process of who we are and who we are becoming. The importance of writing down your goals so you can see them in writing is emphasized as well.

The importance of visualization is also addressed. Jeeyoon Kim remind us too that we are most susceptible to the self pity virus when we feel weak mentally as well as physically.

The importance of looking at the situation you are in with a new perspective is also addressed as well as addressing the importance of gratitude.

This book also addresses the importance of using positive words, the importance of uplifting ourselves, instead of focusing on the negative things. The importance of giving to others is also addressed, not only seeking our own success, but also reaching out to those who need our help, however that help may look.

Whenever You’re Ready is broken into easy to reach chapters, with questions to think about, as well things to try to help us build success, certain passages are emphasized allowing you to see the importance the author puts on these, if you are looking for a unique self help book, then I would highly recommend Whenever You’re Ready!

I give Whenever You’re Ready five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

This book is magnificent. I found it to be informative, inspiring, and motivational. I am a pianist (beginner/intermediate) and could relate to many of the experiences the author had in her childhood years of piano lessons, practicing and perfecting her skills. I was interested in how she deals with the "jitters" that many musicians deal with before performing in public. Jeyoon Kim learned at a young age that she would need to dedicate her entire life to music if she was going to achieve her goals and make her dreams come true.

This book is much more than a biography of the author's life. She shares her secrets for living a successful life and dealing with the challenges that we all ultimately face. There are workbook-like activities at the end of each chapter to help readers apply key concepts to their own situations.

I found the first section of this book, "Practice until Practicing Is a Part of Your Normal Life", especially helpful. The techniques in this section of the book can be applied to any skill that you want to excel in. The author reminds us that the turtle wins the race over the rabbit. Perseverance and persistence are important traits to use when working toward a goal. The concept of natural talent is downplayed and a strong work ethic is emphasized.

I have been listening to Jeeyoon Kim's cd album "Over, Above, Beyond" while writing this review. The music is stunning. My favorite selection on the cd is her rendition of the classic children's song "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."
You can listen to the author play the piano on her YouTube Channel.

I highly recommend this book!

Thank you to the publisher for sending me a free copy of this book to review.

4.5 that I rounded up to a 5.

I listened to the audiobook version of Whenever You're Ready: How to Compose the Life of Your Dreams, which was quite pleasantly narrated by the author and runs for about 7-1/2 hours. Jeeyoon Kim is an award-winning music educator and professional concert pianist who has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall. In the prelude, she notes "Whether we have piano keys before us or not, we all have a stage called life."

I love that she structured the book like a classical concert: it begins with a prelude and then shifts to multiple separated movements (what she calls a group of chapters) which focus on different themes (like building and maintaining habits, achieving goals, and work/life balance). Each movement is followed by a quick intermission that the author uses to help the reader gain an appreciation of classical music. For example, the first intermission is about Frédéric Chopin. There's also an encore at the end!

As a musician and performer myself, I appreciated hearing about her mental, emotional, and physical preparations before her concerts. It is so very important to be fully prepared for many things in life, like job interviews, public speaking, marathon training, or goal setting in general.

I really enjoyed her advice, and her tag line about her suggestions: "Something to think about, whenever you're ready."

I received an advanced audio copy of this book for review via NetGalley, but all opinions contained herein are my own.

A great reflective read on life, challenges, motivations, and building habits. The author is a professional pianist. She does a great job connecting with the listeners early on, describing her humble childhood in Korea and introduction to music. She then progresses through her childhood, high school years, and challenges during undergraduate and graduate trainings. I consider this a refreshing listen (or read), focusing on steps to encourage life balance, changing daily habits, and ‘enjoying the journey’ rather than solely focusing on the finish line of life and its challenges.

Kim shares many stories that are personal, with her journey and challenges as a professional musician, and adaptations she has had to make during the COVID pandemic. She also has quite a history of teaching, with great anecdotes sprinkled in throughout. Perhaps my favorite part of this listen are the various teaching pearls that I plan to incorporate into my daily flow and repertoire of teaching tools.

I also enjoyed the creativity the author demonstrated, including arranging the read/listen into an organization similar to a classical music concert, with links for live music! I highly recommend.

Thank you NetGalley for my free copy. The comments above are mine without influence

This book was like a nice warm hug! Love the cover but the blurb and chance to listen music sucked me in.

What did I like? The author was absolutely brilliant here. Not only a Carnegie Hall pianist but a master’s and a doctorate in Piano’s Performance … and an self help author. She creates here on how to compose the life of your dreams. So many people allow certain failures to hold them back but this author speaks from her own bumps in the road to becoming an amazing musician. If your stuck then some of these ideas may help you break through.

Would I recommend or buy? I enjoyed reading this book and the author is sincere in her plea to help others. Kindness and thoughtfulness fill the pages. Some of it was new to me but extremely helpful. I’d recommend it to pretty much everyone even if you don’t think you need it. Everyone should always try to improve and this seriously felt like a big hug. I would definitely read more by this author.

I received a complimentary copy from Greenleaf Publishing and voluntarily left a review!

From the Publisher: “This book is about helping readers prepare themselves mentally, emotionally, and physically for their own performances. Whether they are hoping to land a job, practicing for a speech, training for a marathon, or trying to accomplish a goal, Jeeyoon’s book will offer them advice, encouragement, and practical exercises they can use to help them perform at their best and achieve their dreams. With warmth, honesty, and compassion, Jeeyoon speaks to readers who are in their own green rooms and invites them to live the life they hope for.”

I enjoyed listening to Jeeyoon Kim’s Whenever You’re Ready. The book was well-organized and encouraging. While some of the tips were familiar and others new, all were a gentle reminder of ‘practicing’ for my best life. Kim’s voice is musical and soothing. I think the physical book would be good because I could refer back to specific tips easily.

When I listened to the preview I was not interested in reading this book. The description was what persuaded me. I was most interested in boosting creativity and creating better habits. There were several good chapters that I listened to more than once. However, there was too much reference to piano playing and too many personal stories that I couldn't relate to.
I thought listening to a self-help book would be good to hear those positive suggestions over and over. However, I prefer to have a physical book so I can highlight and look for bullet points. With a physical book, it is easier to skim the parts I don't relate to.

What a wonderful audiobook! Jeeyoon’s journey to become a classical pianist was paved with bumps and forks in the road. She overcame them by refocusing on what seemed to be impossible situations into manageable moments. She presented how to overcome obstacles by looking at them in a different manner and approached them with patience and determination. I really loved her story and am now following her on YouTube and listening to her podcast. I received this book from netgalley in exchange for for my honest review

The many anecdotes that Jeeyoon Kim shares from her life as a professional concert pianist are applicable to everyone, even someone who is not at all musically inclined—like me. Her stories about focus, dedication, and persistence are particularly relevant in today’s vastly changing world. Not only does Jeeyoon push herself to achieve the goals she has set, but she also recognizes the importance of extending grace to herself and spending some time quietly meditating. Through Jeeyoon’s shared insights and music, readers are given encouragement to continue pursuing their own goals.

This is a lovely self-help book, perfect for musicians and music lovers. As a pianist, I connected really well to the book, seeing several similarities between myself and the author. I loved how this was set out like a concert programme.

Full of insights to help the reader achieve their goals with topics such as habit building and creativity. There's helpful exercises at the end of each chapter.

I would thoroughly recommend. A heartfelt, honest and passionate self-help book.

Korean concert pianist writes a conversational self-help book/memoir that displays the wisdom she has gathered while becoming successful in a demanding discipline. She talks about her love of classical music and her wanting to share and spread that love. She includes insights on some of her favorite pieces. A lovely self-help book that will help anyone, not just those in the arts.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an e-arc!

I used to read a lot of self help books: fewer now but I still enjoy them. This was full of some fairly common advice, but the narrative of the author's life as a classical musician really made it all tie together and I left the book feeling inspired to live a simple, happy life!

I read this on a train with no reception, so I couldn't listen to the suggested music, but I would like to go back and do so.

I used Audible for this book.
This was a smooth and easy flowing book/listen (especially with the piano in the background). Each movement built on top of the prior movement’s lesson. The author’s presentation was kind, caring and encouraging while gifting the reader the experience of not feeling pressured or stressed if a mistake in the lesson is made. It is a light self help book that is appropriate for any age going through any point in life.

Jeeyoon leads you through a study on becoming the best you can be by comparing it to the life of a concert pianist. She is an accomplished pianist who has taken the lessons she has learned along the way and translated them into transforming your life. Her gentle, easy style leads you through these changes without feeling judgmental or harsh. It is an easy way to think about the changes you can make - Whenever you're ready - to create the life you want.
