BOOK THREE OF THE EFFUGIUM A penitent Richard Kryuss travels to the Galenian colony world of Bellum with a proposal for the retaking of Galenia from TREE. It's a risky scheme, but with sinister ulterior motives in mind, Bellum’s warmongering leader, Proeliator Latro, agrees to assist. Kryuss, however, harbors ulterior motives of his own. I read this book in paperback. This is an unsolicited review.

Author Patrick Walts does it again with book three of his Time Remaining series. His writing, which I have always enjoyed, matures in this one. His storytelling is one of the best, with descriptions of various planets, tech, and species, without becoming a burden to read. Allowing the reader to imagine in all the small details. Don’t get me wrong. I love hard sci-fi with wide swathes of tech-speak and world-building. But there’s also something to be said for universe-builders like Walts who make it look easy, creating a whole future without writing a 900-page novel.

The characters once again, have real depth to them. Neither “good” nor “evil”, they each make the best decisions as they see from their own perspectives… which is why it works so well. Though I will say, the leader of Bellum is one messed up dude. Messed up, yes, but also calculating and highly intelligent, in his own way. I loved the planet Kadal. The way it works naturally more than the people inhabiting it.

The author brings the unexpected into his writing. I find myself surprised with the elements he adds. There’s very little foreshadowing. Much like real life, it just happens organically. I really love that about this series. So many books are written “Hollywood-style” with predictable scenes, the villains and heroes alike performing exactly as they should and shallow. Not so with these stories. Instead strange things happen and somehow, it’s all believable. A little bit of humor, a little bit of gross, a lot of great reading.

This book gets 5/5 stars from me. Excellent pacing, writing only getting better as the author continues to create more books, great title and story, weird but believable characters, and a twist at the end of the book I did NOT see coming. Highly recommended to those who love modern science fiction that isn’t overly techy.
