This is a solid mystery, Modglin is a queen when it comes to twist endings and this one definitely has twists galore.

Stephanie reports seeing a car go into the lake one night. No one in the town seems to want the lake searched, so they go to lengths to question Stephanie about what she saw--was it really a car or could she have just been overtired?

Stephanie's husband is missing. She's a single mom to twin teenagers who are out of control. Did Ted leave her for someone else?
Enzo's wife was murdered, but no one has been arrested for the crime.
Sheriff Jude and his wife Michelle are hiding something and they definitely don't want the lake searched because of it.

I liked the overall mystery of this story and the twists, but there are no likable characters. In fact, the twin boys are so unlikable that I cringed every time they appeared in a scene. Overall this is fast paced, but there are a large number of characters and not quite enough development. I particularly disliked Stephanie and her interaction with her boys, but really her interaction with everyone. She's preachy to others, but lets the boys walk all over her and everyone else. She just grated on me and made me not like the book as much as I would have otherwise. And as I said in one of my updates, the stating over and over "oh no will someone find out my/our secret?" is overdone--just reveal the secrets already.

I listened to the audiobook that was narrated by Mandy Kaplan for the female characters and Wyatt Baker for the male characters. I loved the back and forth with the voices and it makes the story more engaging overall. I did like this book, but it wasn't my favorite by this author. If you're in the mood for a fast-paced story with a bunch of twists, then you can't go wrong with a Kiersten Modglin book.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Addictive and full of suspense.

This novel despite being relatively short (6 hours) packs a lot of entertainment. I love the secrets, lies, and despicable characters, really nobody to like. Somehow they captured my interest. Okay, there's one character I liked, turns out he/she lied too. When push comes to shove, they lied some more. So who can you believe? NO ONE.

Our Little Secret is mainly told from three POVs. Michelle, the sheriff's wife, that one lady who knows all that goes around in town. Stephanie, a mother of twin teen boys who's trying to hold the family together after her husband Ted, a well-loved teacher went missing. Then there's Enzo, the mayor, a widower, and a family friend.

The audio with male and female narrators is very good. Both narrators bring the characters to life.
Thank you so much OrangeSky Audio and Netgalley for providing an audio copy for this review.

In a nutshell: It’s twisty, alright. You’ll enjoy the book if you love a twisty thriller. That’s it. Main USP: Twists galore.

Story:
A small town named Cason Glen. Here you’ll meet:
👉 Sheriff Judd Rivera, his wife Michelle and daughter Caroline –each hiding a secret.
👉 Neighbour Stephanie and her 17 year old twins Raphael and Dominic –each hiding a secret.
👉 Mayor Enzo, and his niece Sophie – hiding a secret.
👉 Stephanie’s missing husband Ted: hiding a secret.
Basically, that’s the plot of the book. Everyone is hiding a secret and everyone is trying their best to keep their secrets. So when something happens that threatens to reveal one of the secrets, there is a flash flood of sorts and everyone’s secrets are in danger.

The book is written in the multiple characters’ first person perspectives, mainly from Judd, Stephanie, Michelle, and Enzo.

I realise that the plot sounds very meh from the way I have written it. But it’s not bad. Kiersten Modglin is known for providing twists after twists in her books and this book certainly confirms that claim. Some of the secrets are visible a mile away but many of them will really surprise you. But because of this motif of multiple characters with multiple secrets each, I felt frustrated and mentally exhausted keeping track of who is revealing what and hiding what else. The secret-keeping went over the top as far as I’m concerned. It was also tough to accept that so many educated people couldn’t see the reality for what it was and chose to believe a farfetched or whitewashed version of the truth.

The pace and length work to the book’s advantage. Unlike many contemporary writers who add needless side-tracks and red herrings to push up their book to 400 pages, Modglin keeps the plot taut and focussed and doesn’t lose control of her narrative at any point. If your main criterion for an enjoyable psychological thriller is unexpected and countless turns in the plot, you will adore this book for sure.

I love twisty thrillers, but I enjoy them even more if I can connect with the characters (at least with a couple of them if not with all.) Unfortunately, most of the characters in the book are not just unlikeable but actually detestable. It made me wonder how so many churlish fibsters reside within such a little town. Sheer bad luck for the town, that! Stephanie is the one who irked me the most. Whiny and clingy at times, she lived by one set of rules for herself and imposed a different code of conduct on those around her. And as she is one of the principal characters of the book, she was one of the reasons my rating went downwards. Another factor that went against my enjoyment was the ending, by which time I was fed up of the secrets still being thrown constantly at my face.

I had long wanted to try a Kiersten Modglin book. There is a Facebook book group dedicated to psychological thrillers in which most of the members go ga-ga for this author. It was this FOMO that made me opt for this ALC. And while I don’t regret this experience, I’m not really a fan-girl yet. I’ll still try a couple of books more by her to see if the characters in those are more relatable.

I heard the audiobook narrated by Mandy Kaplan and Wyatt Baker. They do a great job of bringing the female and male characters respectively to life. As the audio version clocks just under 6 hours, it would be a great way of trying out this book.
Bonus benefit of the audiobook: I finally understood how to pronounce this author’s surname.
😉

All in all, I don’t regret going for this audiobook. I got to hear a fast-paced thriller with multiple morally grey characters and a multitude of secrets and twists. Something that most regular thriller lovers will enjoy.

My rating: 3.75, mainly because I opted for the audiobook. I don’t think I would have given it more than 3.5 had I read it.

My thanks to OrangeSky Audio and NetGalley for the audio ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

A fitting title for this secret-filled read. Everyone has something they're not talking about, but who has the biggest secret? And just who is the "our" in each shared secret? There's a steady build to the exciting ending and the unanticipated twists made this a 5-star read for me!

So many secrets! So many lies! No one can be trusted in this tale of murder and betrayal. Under the surface of this idyllic small town lies a dark and disturbing reality that is close to being revealed. Who are the “monsters” of this otherwise peaceful setting? The final shocking twist I never saw coming. The narrators expertly brought the story to life and added a layer of intrigue and suspense. Thank you NetGalley and OrangeSky Audio for my audiobook.

Quick read, quick to grab you

Overall it's a tricky little small town murder/disappearance mystery. Lots of characters. Every single one unreliable.

This is generally a 3 star read for me. However, the quickness and fun feeling knowing everyone is so busy being paranoid that someone else knows they secret. No one realizes they are all feeling the exact same way. No one's actually suspecting anyone else of any crime. They only suspect everyone to the extent they may know their secret.

Paranoia at it's best. 4 stars because I simply enjoyed this unexpectedly!

Modglin outdid herself in this incredibly addictive, truly dark and twisted story. I was hooked from the first page. The characters keep their secrets close to the vest, just like Modglin, and it's a remarkable skill she utilizes to weave this expertly crafted web of lies. Our Little Secret kept me guessing, revelation after revelation, all the way to the intense and shocking conclusion. Don't miss this captivating and unpredictable book that remained on my mind long after I finished.

Love so many of Kiersten Modglin's books, just didn't care for this. Not a bad mystery, but the truly heinous, despicable characters except for a couple, if that, was just too much for me. I also just don't want to read about misogynist, sexually inappropriate, abusive men or teenagers. I will always look forward to Modglin's books, full of twists and turns, and every author can have one that just misses the bar.

* Accidentally delated when cleaning off my shelves - recopied from my original NetGalley review on 10/10/21 *

The plot centers around the mystery of a beloved missing teacher, husband, and father of twin boys. What ensues is nothing short of a jaw-dropping entanglement of multiple mysteries and secrets all entwined together.

The conclusion seamlessly brings to light multiple (long kept hidden) insidious cruelties. Tying together all unanswered questions into a perfect - psychologically mind-mending and enthralling - bow.

Mandy Kaplan and Wyatt Baker make an impeccable team as dual narrators for the. multiple (many accented) characters - aptly individualizing multiple points of view with harmonious clarity. Every voice is unique, consistent, and easily identifiable as belonging to a specific character. Kudos to both for providing an absolutely riveting and exemplary listening experience.

With much thanks to NetGalley and OrangeSky Audio for the free audio download in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. #NetGalley #OrangeSkyAudio #OurLittleSecret

My twisty queen @kierstenmodglinauthor is back with another new book and you guys, this one has some of my very favorite elements; small town secrets, devious characters, a whole cast of unreliable narrators and a break neck pace that made this a one sit read. This was such a fun and suspenseful read, this was me while reading 👉🏻🤔🤯😮😫😬I’ll leave the synopsis below, but if you haven’t read a KMod book yet you must, they’re so good! This one is out next week, but if you wanna try one ASAP pick up The Arrangement.

I absolutely hated this book. I read it like I would watch a train wreck or a car crash. I couldn't stop but I didn't want to finish either. When I did finish, I felt sick of myself, dirty, that I had even read the book at all.

First, I hated the characters. Every.Single.One. I live in a very small town and they reminded of the people in my town whom I despise. They all went to school together, know each other, look the other way but judge everyone and judge them harshly. They are warped people who are not normal, the people in this small town and the people in the book. Second, I despised the teens in this book. Hated.Them. If this is what teens are like in this world today, and from experience far too many of them are, then YUCK. I cannot describe how horrible they are. But hey, they learned it first hand from their parents who are just as bad. Third, I really REALLY do not like plot twists just for the sake of a gotcha moment on the very last page of the book and that is exactly what happened in this book. If an author cannot plot a book better than this then, please, don't put any more crap on the shelves. HORRIBLE. I do not recommend!!

Every author has an off book and this one is it. There’s no suspense. The characters are unlikeable, and at times, cringeworthy.

Everyone has a secret, therefore everyone is guilty of something. Teeny tiny town and tons of murders. There’s not enough character development and all the emotions land flat.

I kept putting the book down and I wanted to give up less than 100 pages to the end. Moral dilemma? Hardly. Everyone here is covering their own ass. Nobody has any morals as far I can see.

This book is a whole “no” from me.

I listened to the audiobook which ran just under 6 hours. The story was quick paced and full of twists right till the end but I did not like any of the characters at all who, in a nutshell, were all different levels of sociopaths. The two narrators, Mandy Kaplan and Wyatt Baker, did an overall decent job of narrating the book but I did find Mandy's southern accent for a couple of characters a bit annoying.

My thanks to NetGalley, the audiobook publisher OrangeSky Audio and the author Kiersten Modglin for the audio Arc of the book.

Wow!! This was something else! I love the way this author tells a story. This mystery thriller was a wild ride to crazy land. Everyone in this was guilty of something. Lots of twists and turns full of more mystery. I highly recommend it if you love a good thriller. This author is quickly becoming my favorite mystery writer.
I chose to listen to this book on audio and the narrators were Mandy Kaplan and Wyatt Baker and they were awesome. This was 5 hours and 54 minutes of enjoyable listening.

So many twists and turns in this suspenseful thriller. It was also a fairly short book that I listened to in half a day. Kept me gripped to the very end.

The story takes place in a small town where everyone has grown up together. When the beloved Mr. Turner, a well respected teacher, goes missing, there are rumours he left his family and ran away with another woman. As time goes on, secrets start to unfold and uncertainty sets in. It seems every one is hiding something.

Best going in blind and discovering the plot on your own. Enjoy the ride!

Cason Glen is a small town that is seemingly perfect. That is until someone goes missing from one the town’s most exclusive neighborhoods. Of course panic then ensues among all of the neighbors. How could they just go missing? Will I be next? And then the dark side of the neighborhood starts to come to light. There are secrets that all of the neighbors are holding and at what length will they go to to keep it that way? Does anyone ever really tell the truth?

OUR LITTLE SECRET is another brilliant book by the master of thrillers, Kiersten Modglin. This story had me fully engaged throughout. My mind was in overdrive trying to put all of pieces together. I was completely shocked by the ending. This book deserves each and every star! I highly recommend it.

Many thanks to Kiersten Modglin for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

"What is we are all monster's deep down after all?"

Michelle and her husband Jude are woken up in the middle of the night. Jude is the town sheriff and there has been an accident down by the lake. Panic starts as Michelle tells her side of the story trying to protect the secret the Lake holds that could destroy her family and her daughter Caroline.
Michelle has called in the accident report but quickly recanted. She has her own secrets in the Lake. She tells her side of the story about her missing husband Ted and her sons Dominic and Rafael but nothing is as it seems.
Ezno is in love with Michelle. Has been since his wife Leslie died. Ezno has his story to tell and his secrets in the Lake. Will his secrets effect his neice Sophie who is staying with him?
Fun little read told from three different veiw points. Small town life at its worst where everyone trys to know your business and has known you since grade school. Keeping secrets is hard. But so is living with them.

When reading books by Kiersten Modglin, I brace myself for the chance to pick out two particular moments:
1. the scene right before the stuff hits the fan
2. the surprise twist I never saw coming
Her books engage both my reader brain and my writer brain, and I love her for it. Once again, awesome job. Keep the stories coming!

Thank you to Kiersten Modglin for providing me with an advanced copy of your newest book, Our Little Secret, out August 24th!

Our Little Secret is a multi-POV story told from four people all hiding dirty little secrets from one another.

One stormy night, Michelle wakes from her bed, roused and restless, by what, she isn’t sure. Her husband, Jude, their town sheriff, tells her to go back to bed until he gets a call. Stephanie has reported that she saw a car crash into the lake, a lake that holds the secrets of so many in this small town. When Jude and Enzo go to ask Stephanie about what she saw, she recants her story, much to the secret delight of both Jude and Enzo. As the story moves along, we begin to realize that everyone is hiding a secret, but some are worse than others. Only time will slowly reveal all.

As usual, Kiersten’s books have amazing, never-saw-it-coming endings! And this one doesn’t fail to disappoint! It’s truly shocking the things that people will do and the lies they tell themselves about why it had to happen.

Our Little Secret releases August 24th! Preorder today! This is not one you want to miss!

Guilty read that delivers!
Kiersten keeps her reputation of hard ending twists and gasp out loud moments!
In a small town, a wife is murdered; a husband is missing; two people commit adultery; and that is just in the first fifty pages.
Jude is called to the lake - Stephanie convinced she saw a car drive into the lake, or a person fall in. She's so tired from working two jobs to support herself and sons after her husband just walked out.
Jude's wife, Michelle, is convinced her family's secret is about to be reveled.
But Stephanie retracts her statement. Just a misunderstanding.
Why would Stephanie makeup a story? What does she think is in the lake? What else could she be hiding.
This plot just consumed me - I can't even tell you how the story progressed; it just did.
Told from multiple points of view, this plot moves - dragging you along with shocks, disgusting behavior and all the reasons we want to peak in our neighbor's windows.

I have a serious book hang over from this one. Holy cow I am still shocked at everything that I read with this one. The shocking page turning moments in this one had me on the edge of my seat. I was saying "what the heck" a lot during this book. It was that mind blowing and shocking. I will say this I know that Kiersten can write a psychological thriller this one proves that in more ways that one. She just keeps getting better and and better with her writing. I seriously want to know what goes on in her head when writing these books.
Lets see if I can give this book justice with this review. Because seriously you just need to one click it when it comes out and read it for yourself to know what I went through reading it.
This one hits it right off the bat. First chapter in you are wondering where this storyline is going to take you. There is mystery and suspense right off the bat. Cason Glen is a very small town where everyone knows everyone and what is going on in their live. But several people in this town are keeping some big secrets that could tell the town apart. Stephanie, Enzo, the Sheriff Jude and his wife Michelle are all hiding something. But will it come to light and change their lives? How far will a mother, father go to protect their children? So many different shocking moments in this storyline. Hold on because you are going on quite the rollercoaster ride. I guarantee a ride you will not regret taking. The twists and turns in this one kept me freaking hooked and turning the pages trying to figure out the truth and who did what. The suspense is mind blowing in this one. Shocking moments you have to pause from and take a breathe to make sure you just read what you did.
Kiersten has done it again. Wrote a mind blowing, page turning, psychological thriller that completely blew my mind. I loved each and every character in this one. Each character was unique in their own way and really told the storyline. Each character had a story to tell and it was told perfectly. You will be shocked how well each character tells their story and how you can easily feel what the character is going through. Living with the secrets they are keeping.
Psychological thriller that is a nonstop page turning shocking book with an ending that will have you wondering what just happened.

I had heard quite a few good things about this author Kiersten Modglin and so I was interested to read her starting with this mystery that I saw available on KU. In Our Little Secret, we are taken to a small town called Cason Glen where bad things don't normally happen. However, over the past summer, bad things did happen, and everyone has dark little secrets that they don't want to get out. Our Little Secret was such a good fast-paced mystery as it starts with Jude and Michelle Rivera being woken up as their neighbor Stephanie has called to say she saw a car drive off the bridge. Jude and Michelle are worried as if divers clear the lake, their dark secret could come out. It's not just Jude and Michelle worried as Enzo is scared too. Last Summer, Stephanie's husband Ted went missing and disappeared. Meanwhile, another dead body has turned up and it looks like everything is connected the town of Cason Glen has a dark past and no one in the small town is ready to go down without a fight. I was in two minds about the ending of this story as I did love the characters of Jude, Michelle, and Enzo but freaking hated the characters of Stephanie and her two sons Rafe and Dominic as that whole family had an evil streak as the mum loved to play the victim and the sons were just spoiled freaking jerks and brassed me off. I am now looking forward to reading other books by this author Kiersten Modglin as she is a new mystery author to add to my reading lists.

Another knock out of the park for Kiersten Modglin!

Someone’s missing.
Someone’s dead.
Everyone’s lying.

As always, I was met with a story that grabbed me from the beginning. By the end of the first chapter, I needed... NEEDED to know what the people of Cason Glen had done. I blew through the pages, anxiously awaiting the outcome and was met with multiple, insane plot twists. A whole plot of unlikeable characters, (seriously, I think this town has an HOA requirement of being a grime-ball!) Our Little Secret was a fantastic read that had me on edge and yet again, I couldn't guess the ending. If you haven't grabbed a book by Modglin yet, you're missing out.

Warning: cheating, sexual relationship between a teacher and a student.

I hated every single character in this book. I hated the plot twists. Everything and everyone was a means to inflict as much shock on an unsuspecting reader as the author could possibly get away with.

Well, goal achieved. Between extremely unlikable characters, murder and cheating galore, the author bending the characters and the plot to her will, and the editing (gerund overuse is profound) I pretty much despised everything about the book.

Read for a challenge. Thank god the book was short. 1 star.

“We’re all part monster. Some of us just hide it better than others.”

A small community with people who have grown up together seems like the perfect place to live with friendly neighbors. Unfortunately secrets find their way even where you least expect them. Who can be trusted? Who is truly innocent? Our Little Secret had me changing my mind each chapter who was truly innocent and who had the worst secret to keep! Another amazing read by Kiersten!!
