Internationally renowned author and Bible teacher Joyce Meyer provides a close study on Philippians, emphasizing the true joy that comes from serving others through Christ.
Paul's letter to the people at Philippi serves as a reminder that if we search for joy in possessions, places, or people, we will always come up short. True, lasting joy comes only through faith in Jesus Christ, living in harmony with His followers, and serving others in the name of Christ. The life lived by the Philippians is still attainable today. In her comprehensive approach, Joyce Meyer takes a deep dive into well-known and beloved verses, identifying key truths and incorporating room for personal reflection.
Joyce's Philippians provides a key study tool that will help you develop a stronger relationship with God. If you take time to examine His word, you'll see how much He loves you and how much He desires that you live a joyful, content life on earth!

Every Joyce Meyer study like this that I've read, I've enjoyed. I love how she takes the book of the Bible and breaks it down, not just by chapter but by verse. I went in to it the first time expecting it to be a bit deeper of a commentary, but it's much more of a personal Bible study. So while she doesn't necessarily include the Greek or Hebrew words like some commentaries etc., she does break the verses down with practical stories of her own life or even of the historical times when the book was written.
Philippians is such a short book, but she digs so much truth and depth out of it. It opens up with information about Paul and where he was at in his ministry during his writing this letter. And goes from there. I got a lot out of this study and continue to do so as I continue to study it.
Wonderful, one of my favourite books of the Bible with Joyce Meyer's comments, just perfect. It was great company during some alone-time this summer. Now I'm waiting for a German translation to get published so I can press this on my prayer group members ... ;)
Joyce Meyer's Biblical Study series is as beautiful inside as it is on the covers. In Philippians by Joyce Meyer she shares how Philippians is one of her favorite epistles because it encouraged believers in the early church as well as addressing believers today. I have to agree as it is one of my favorite books as well.
Philippians: A Biblical Study starts with an introduction by Meyer on how to study the book of Philippians using this book. She also has an introduction to the book that tells about the book and also lists the key truths in this book of the Bible. There are 14 chapters in this Bible study book that cover the four chapters of Philippians in depth. Not only does Meyer take the reader through the book verse by verse, but she also has Personal Reflection questions with room to journal about the question.
I like these in depth study books because Meyer goes through the Bible books so thoroughly and this book in Philippians is as well done as the rest in the series. The study notes are thorough. She has places to write out answers to the reflective questions, which I like. However, the books are so pretty, as well as nicely bound, that I prefer to journal my answers in a separate journal. If you are a Joyce Meyer fan and like her Bible studies, you will want to get this latest edition in Philippians.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions within this review are my own.
I've read many of Meyer's books, and I always find them informative and encouraging. This one is no exception. I was excited to read it, as it focuses on my favorite book of the Bible.
Philippians is popular with many, largely due to its message of hope and encouragement. The apostle Paul, who experienced many seasons that would discourage most people, wrote this book. He reminds the reader in Philippians that it's still possible to praise, no matter our circumstances.
Meyer breaks down the book, giving the reader a deeper understanding. It's presented in a way that is easy for the reader to follow and understand. This would be a good study for men and women alike.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.
I absolutely love these studies! I appreciate the deeper dive and how she breaks it down into realistic ways that attribute to your life. Each chapter is well written and includes spaces to journal your thoughts. I read this as a devotional, as I did the other ones like it. It’s uplifting, motivational, and a fantastic way to get into the word. Highly recommend these!
In Philippians study, Joyce Meyer looked at the four chapters and how Paul mentioned joy 13 times. Paul was being held in prison when he wrote this book. She revealed the background of the Philippi and what we can learn by reading the book of the Bible in context. Joyce explored how Paul explored the mind and thoughts and how they are connected to our joy. Paul also discussed how to avoid complaining, letting go of the past and moving forward, rejoicing and trusting in the Lord, living in peace, and leaning on God through whatever we go through. Joyce reinforced the powerful truth found in Philippians 1:6-8, and this talked about how God can begin a good work in each of us and He will bring it to completion. Paul explained that even if he is in chains and defending the Gospel, he would still testify about God’s holy grace. Even when he was in prison, he remained joyful and Joyce reminded readers on how they can rely on joy no matter what you may be currently facing. Paul writes also about the resurrection of Jesus and how we become like Him in death. He also stated how he would forget what is behind him and how we will run his race to obtain his prize.
I would recommend this amazing study about Philippians to one who is ready to seek some joy in their lives. I immensely enjoyed reading the background on where Paul wrote this book while in prison. He knew that there was healing and power in choosing to live in peace and joy. Paul was being persecuted for following Jesus but he still believed and remained hopeful about the future. I also liked how he shared the importance of forgetting the past, running our race, and trusting God no matter what we go through. I appreciated how open Joyce was in sharing her own story in the book and how she struggled with guilt and condemnation. She was sexually abused by her father and her mother chose to ignore the truth about it. Joyce explained how she felt not good enough and shameful. She shared how she had to forgive and let go of the hurt and the past to get healing. She related her own story back to Paul’s and how she was able to get freedom for her own life and to find joy again.
"I received this book free from the publisher, Hachette Book Group/Faithwords for my honest review.”
I was really excited to learn that Joyce Meyer had written a Bible Study on the book of Philippians as it is one of my favorite books of the Bible.
Ms. Meyer begins the book with a "how to" study of her book followed by a few pages about the Philippians. She then has fourteen chapters covering all of Philippians followed by her closing comments.
In her Chapter 13, she has a section on Philippians 4:6-7 which happens to be two of my favorite verses. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus". She goes on to explain that there are four practical and powerful principles within these two verses. We are told not to worry, to pray, to be thankful and to have and enjoy peace. She goes on to explain how she uses these verses to block worry in her own life.
She covers all the chapters and verses the same way as I have mentioned above. I would highly recommend this Bible study to anyone who wants to dig down deeper into God's Word.
I would like to thank FaithWords, a division of Hachette Books, for my copy of Philippians. I received my copy for free with no expectation of a positive or negative review. The opinions are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR. Part 255.
Meyer's book is more of a devotional exploration of the major teachings in Philippians than it is a study. Her emphasis is not increasing knowledge. It is not a verse by verse study. Meyer encourages readers to live in the power of the gospel, to live more Christlike. She shares her inspiring thoughts on the truths found within the book.
I appreciate her insights, such as those from Paul's prayer (1:9-11). We are encouraged to pray for spiritual insights and blessing when in a difficult situation rather than just asking God to change those circumstances. Meyer suggests we focus on what God is doing in the inner man rather than on outer circumstances. Another insight is on the meaning of a surrendered will, using Paul as an example. Another is why living in unity is important and what that really means.
I like how Meyer clarifies Phil. 4:13, often taken out of context. We can do what God has given us to do, not everything we decide to do.
This book would make a good devotional reading. There are short sections within each chapter that are good for daily readings. There are periodic questions for reflection as well. Meyer's work is a good reminder that, like Paul, we are to focus “on things that bring us joy rather than things that steal it.” (63/270)
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Philippians by Joyce Meyer is a biblical study on the book of Philippians in the Bible. She walks you through the entire book, providing context and some historical background that a new reader might not be familiar with. Joyce breaks down the book of Philippians into smaller sections and provides small lessons for each one.
For reference, Philippians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the city of Philippi. The letter/book can be found towards the end of the Bible. It was a letter of encouragement and guidance to the new believers in the city. The practical insights shared then are still valuable to us today.
Joyce gives the reader many questions to ponder and provides an area in each chapter to write in the answers. My favorite chapter in this book is towards the end. For Philippians 4:8-9, Paul mentions seven qualities we should think about at all times. She goes onto describe each quality, cross-references it with other scriptures, and shares how we can apply it to our lives. Joyce also shares personal stories and real-life examples.
I felt like I had Joyce next to me from the first time I picked up the book. I would recommend this book to someone familiar with the book of Philippians, but has never read it completely. Also, to anyone interested in understanding basic Christian principals.
Joyce Meyer has prepared a nicely done devotional/Bible Study on the book of Philippians.
This book crossed my path just as I was preparing for a group study of Philippians in my local church. I expect it will contribute to my thoughts as I prepare for each weeks study.
After a brief study of the setting and recipients of Paul’s letter, she offers 14 studies on the entire book of Philippians. Most of the studies are 4-6 pages in length though a few are much shorter. Studies include sections for reading and one or two questions requiring personal reflection. My only concern is the lack of a Scripture Index as the author often draws from verses in Philippians outside the current context as well as from the entire Bible at times.
The devotions are practical - often giving explicit instructions to follow when applying the scripture. The book could easily be used for individual study. However, because a few (very few) are shorter, the reader might want to consider combining some studies for group use. I give the book 3-1/2 stars. ______________ This review is based on a free electronic copy provided by the publisher for the purpose of creating this review. The opinions are mine alone.
I heard about this book one day when I was watching one of Joyce Meyer’s sermons on YouTube. It’s where I hear about her books most of the time, or even her podcasts. This book is a Biblical study of the book of Philippians. Studying this book with the Bible affected me in such a way because a lot of the scriptures in Philippians opened up to me and I understood them. A lot of the times I had a light bulb moment.
I learned many valuable lessons from doing this study book. It helped with a lot of areas in my Christian walk that I often struggle with. It helped me grow spiritually in many ways. If I had to choose one, I would say it’s the part where Joyce says that ‘God requires us to take steps of faith without knowing exactly what we are stepping into. Only after we have done that will He show us what He can do.’ That hit me close to home. I have received this message in a few places now and have now decided that I should obey God and take that step of faith.
I have started to enjoy these commentaries by Meyer, someone who I normally do not watch much or listen to, but her writing is an down to earth style that is easy to understand with these guides to the Biblical texts. Philippians in the Bible is only four chapters, so this one was shorter when it comes to the text in length, but she provides great topics that shows there is much going on in the Bible's shorter works, such as the importance of mentors, how Paul prayed for the city not for their current situations, but for their future spiritual well being, and how certain people can help and hurt a Christian's walk. This commentary, like the others I have reviewed and read, are for both men and females, so us guys can learn from it as well (Meyer usually has a focus on women's subjects in her ministry) This is another enjoyable text that I learned from, just like others in the series. 👎 After reading Alice Hoffman's historical fiction books, The DoveKeepers and The Marriage of Opposites about the Jewish people, their faith, and the events that happened in biblical times, I was looking forward to this bible "study". I use that word in quotation marks because there was no research done whatsoever. It was just Mrs. Meyers using different passages out of the book of Philippians and giving her opinion on how people should live. I'm disappointed with how a huge spiritual personality could do so little research on a book and present it as a study. I got nothing from this book and often became frustrated by her judgmental banter.
My advice to Mrs. Meyers would be to dig deeper. Do your own research. Give your readers facts about the Philippian church, leaders during that time, and more history on the author (Paul). It's out there because I've read it with books by secular writers.
Note: *I try not to put down spiritual leaders, but if they are going to publish a book for profit, then I think it's fair game to judge it on the content.*
"Philippians" is a Bible commentary on Philippians that can be used for personal Bible study. The author printed the verses at the start of each section, doing one to seven verses at a time and working her way through Philippians. She talked about each group of verses and brought out insights to improve our understanding. She stayed focused on the verses rather than telling funny stories, but it wasn't highly academic or difficult to follow. It's written at a layman's level and contained short enough sections that it could be used for daily devotional reading. She included questions for personal reflection along with space to write in your answer. Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to better understand Philippians.
I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
Philippians Bible study by Joyce Meyer gives practical insights for Christian living. The reader will get more out of the book, and grow spiritually if they look up the Scripture verses, answer the questions, and ponder the day's reading.
I appreciate that the study begins with historical information. Also, the Philippians study is easy to read and understand. I highly recommend the study to new and mature Believers.

I love every book that I have ever read by Joyce Meyer and I really enjoyed Mrs. Meyer’s commentary on the book of Philippians. In the commentary, Mrs. Meyer goes through the book verse by verse and chapter by chapter, explaining the book of Philippians and what she learned and what God has taught her through Philippians. Mrs. Meyer’s commentary also puts the book in historical context. The commentary also gives the reader things to think about and encourages them to read the Word of God for themselves and to get closer to God. I used this book as part of my devotion time. I highly recommend this book to others! Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book! (This review is also on GoodReads.0
A favorite of many - Philippians. An epistle of encouragement, hope, and staying power. Written by the Apostle Paul while a prisoner in a Roman prison. Think of the conditions of a prison in 65 A.D. My mind cannot even wrap itself around that. Yet, Paul writes to us about conducting ourselves as worthy of the Gospel. To overcome selfishness and learning not to complain, whine and argue. He tells us to forget the past and look forward to the future. O! Paul, you are a true inspiration. Joyce hits all the points as she disciples us to finish well. I highly recommend this study to anyone who needs a shot of "get over yourself and live for Jesus!"
Do you study God's word, but aren't really sure what you're studying or maybe struggle with staying guided in His word? Philippians is a great commentary Bible Study and tool that helps the reader live on the Bible in practical ways. This book has space for you to record your notes, thoughts, or prayers as you read the book of Philippians. This study is a fantastic tool whether you are new to the Christian faith or you have been in a relationship with the Lord for years. You will grow in your walk and learn so much more about the Bible! This is a great, practical tool! Thank you to the publisher for providing a complimentary copy. A review was not required. #sponsoredbyfaithwords
This was an inspirational book based on Paul's lletters to the Phillipians. He empathizes the word "joy" several times and Joyce does an excellent job of breaking down each letter and interpreting it to her readers in clear, concise prose and even asks questions at the end of each chapter so that the reader can really reflect on what they have just read and see how it relates to their own life. After reading the book I picked up the AMP version of the Bible and read through the book of Phillipians and that also reinforced many of Joyce's many points. I highly recommend this book and thank Net Galley and Hachette Book Group for allowing me to give my honest opinion.
Thanks to Netgalley and FaithWord for granting me this book to read.
This is supposed to be an in depth bible study on the book of Philippians but it's not.
The book is more of a glorified devotional rather than a deep study on Philippians. It is glossed up and shiny but it doesn't make it a deep study. This is not a verse by verse study but more of a general information book which makes the title very misleading. A few questions here and there does not make a bible study. Meyer does have a few good thoughts that she uses in her chapters but all in all this is a very disappointing book. .
Joyce Meyer has been a favorite author of mine for years. One of my favorite books of the Bible is Philippians — I was excited to be able to read this book. I enjoy the practical application of God’s Word and the way that Joyce writes for the reader to have understanding. Although not a really deep dive into the book of Philippians - it was informative. I would recommend this to my friends and those wanting to grow more in their relationship with Christ.
I was given a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review and opinion.
I have always loved the book of Philippians so was pleased to get this bible study. Joyce Meyer is one of my favorite bible teachers and she does a wonderful job with this study. If you want to dig a little deeper, this is a great study to choose and the personal reflection sections are helpful too.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own..
Joyce Meyer delivers! It’s rare for a Christian author to be capable of writing both topical books as well as Bible studies successfully. Joyce does both beautifully! If you’ve enjoyed her topical books or preaching I definitely recommend her Bible studies! Reading about the Bible is great but when you have the chance to actually study it with the guidance of a renowned biblical teacher that’s a completely different experience!
This has been my favorite of the Biblical commentary books in this series so far. I prefer interactive studies, so I appreciated that there were more questions and personal reflection sections in this book. I liked the deep dive into individual verses and sections. It was very informative and interesting.
I really enjoyed this study of Philippians by Joyce Meyer. She really helps you delve into the book of Philippians, bringing a better understanding and appreciation to Paul’s letter. I really feel you can’t go wrong with one of Joyce’s studies, and this one is no exception.
Thank you to NetGalley and FaithWords for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.
This is an excellent in depth study of Philippians. Joyce Meyers does an excellent job of applying biblical principles to everyday life. I thoroughly enjoy her books that break down different books from the Bible. This one didn't disappoint.
This Bible study is about finding joy in Christ and in our lives. This book is not to be read once, but pick it up often so that we get the most out of the message that's in it. We may find some things we might've missed the first time through. I enjoyed reading this book.
I plan to read these books at least every year to continue to grow in my understanding of the Lord. This book helped me see things I hadn't seen before in the book of Philippians and gave me a greater understanding.
