♫ Now Playing - Getaway Car by Alex Warren ♫ ═════════════════ ╰┈➤ My thoughts (spoiler free) ♫ ”Made a deal, got a debt to pay, show goes on you know what they say.” ♫
I am honored to say that I was able to beta read Revival by Keira Mueller! Author of High Heels and Hay Bales, a middle grade summer adventure, I was wondering how Keira was going to pull off such a different genre—NA science fiction/dystopian. But let me tell you…she did it phenomenally.
This book was perhaps the most perfect mixture of science, love, redemption, and adventure. Keira weaved themes of religion, feminism, and relationship trauma seamlessly together to create a story that will hook you and pull on your heart strings. I couldn’t help but binge the last 40ish percent, because I was so invested (screen-induced headaches be darned).
You all better be reading this when it releases, or I’ll come find you 🤗 ═════════════════ ╰┈➤ Characters ♫ ”Fake it till you make it, did I take it too far? The devil’s catching up to my getaway car.” ♫
Avalanche - First of all, love her name. Second of all, her character development in particular was incredible and realistic. I grew to really love her over the course of the story.
Zander - He stole my heart and will not be giving it back anytime soon. He was so kind and gentlemanly and funny! Definitely a green flag kind of man.
Eitan - Now him on the other hand…RED FLAG GUYS, RED FLAG! I better not catch any of you sympathizing with him. ═════════════════ ╰┈➤ Spoilers below! ♫ ”Always in my ear saying ‘you’re no winner’, if I blow this shot, then you pull that trigger.” ♫
I don’t want to say much here, but I just loved the ending! Especially when all the tech went crazy, that was so funny!
And Lavender is so adorable! I’m so happy that Avalanche could help her, and her relationship with Zander is just too cute. ═════════════════ ╰┈➤ Content review ♫ ”Don’t know why I’m running but I’m running like heck, everybody praying on the moment I fail.” ♫
➸ Age Rating - 14/15+
➸ Language - None.
➸ Romance/Sexual - A little bit of kissing that’s not descriptive, quite a bit of mentioning pleasure-houses and prostitution (but it’s all portrayed as evil).
➸ Violence - Characters sustain some injuries, the worst being when they’re attacked by a creature and one of the men nearly dies, and threats of violence.
➸ Religious/Spiritual - Talk of a god called the Gardener, and the theology surrounding that.
➸ Magic - None.
➸ LGBTQ - None.
➸ Alcohol/Drugs - Many mentions of characters getting hungover and drinking all the time, but again always portrayed as bad.
➸ Other Notes/Possible Triggers - Past assault on the fmc (not too detailed), relationship trauma, belittling of women and misogynistic actions from some characters. ═════════════════ ╰┈➤ Quotes ♫ ”Blame the fugitive, and I’m still the one they want.” ♫
”My hopes for partnership had been a far cry from Synergium customs, but still, the gullible girl I was, I’d beloved that I could be different. That in a world filled with of profit and payback, the word “love” still meant something.”
”Unfortunately for him, I didn’t plan on dying. Had he seen my schedule? The calendar didn’t allow for it.”
”The best way to beat the system was to realize that it existed.”
”Can I call you Avie?”
”I’m not bossy, I’m just…aggressively helpful.”
”If I gave my heart to someone they’d break it. And me with it.”

”All of my wounds were reopening, weeping slow, silent tears of blood.”
”Funny how they still shone in the day, but the darker the night, the more visible the light.”
”It was too early to think of the future, but I’d always been a chronic overthinker.”
”Love with loss is better than no love at all. It’s a risk you have to take.”
Now playing: Can You Hold Me - NF, feat. Britt Nicole
Ahhhhh I was so honored to be given this beta read by my amazing goodreads bestie Maria 🩷 Maria, if you see this, I CANNOT wait until you publish so I can have this book on my shelves. It was so good. The politics, the friendship, the slow burn, the action, the entire world, was so, so, so good. And that cliffhanger has me in a chokehold, why?! 😭 Girl you better get cookin’ because I need book two asap
this was SUCH a good book, cannot wait to share title and thoughts! Kate Stradling has written some of my favourite books, but this is my favourite of all her books, hands down.
Read. Just finished reading an upcoming graphic novel from an author friend... 👀 It was a most splendid read, and I think younger middle-graders will love it! I can't wait for its release! :)

♫ Now Playing - Runaway by AURORA ♫ ═════════════════ ╰┈➤ My thoughts (spoiler free) ♫ ”I had a dream when I was seven.” ♫
First of all, thank you so much to my dear friend Jaycee for allowing me to beta read The Elemental War. I feel very honored that you trusted me with it, and I’ve loved getting to share our writing journeys.
My review is based on the current state of the draft, but I’m really excited to see what the author can do with some more edits, especially given that this is her debut novel at age 15.
I can tell that Jaycee is very good at writing emotional scenes, and I found the romance very sweet and endearing, even if it lacked foundation at times. She is a MASTER at chapter endings. Every single one of them made me so excited to read the new chapter, which I desperately need to apply to my own stories.
The Elemental War follows Irelia, a princess who escapes her abusive family and runs away to another kingdom, becoming part of their family while fighting the war against her father. ═════════════════ ╰┈➤ Characters ♫ ”And I was runnin’ far away.” ♫
Irelia - I’m not really sure what I think about her. She was sweet, fun, and caring, but she seemed to change personalities a few times, and I never got a good grasp on her personality because we didn’t see her in the Act 1 story world. I just wish she had some more foundation so we could see how much she grew.
Ezri - I honestly didn’t love him at first; he gives Prince Charming vibes and is always exactly what the FMC needs. We saw a little bit more of his conflict later in the story, but he was just a little too perfect, if you know what I mean. Very sweet and kind, though.
Laia - She is the sweetest! I didn’t always have the greatest grasp on her character, but she obviously loved her siblings and was such a fun, bubbly girl to have around. ═════════════════ ╰┈➤ Quotes! (instead of my thoughts with spoilers) ♫ ”And I was dancin’ in the rain. I felt alive and I can’t complain.” ♫
“This is controlled and free at the same time, overwhelming me with the pure ecstatic energy coursing through my veins.”
“Once someone finds the right book, there’s truly no going back. You’ll be sucked into the story forever, never quite leaving it behind. It becomes a part of you. Of your heart. That’s what literature is for, isn’t it? It’s meant to change us, impact us, reveal truths about ourselves we never knew existed before seeing it on paper in the form of a character that you realize is just like you.”
“You hear readers and writers describing fictional worlds with such vividness it seems almost tangible. You see performers bring a story to life with the tone of their voice, and the movement of their hands. Not everyone can do those things. Only the ones who carry true passion.”
“For hours, I am pulled into the story. The narrative is like a bubble surrounding my mind, creating a barrier between myself and the thoughts I’m not ready to think about. A protection from the unwanted worries that swarm my head. I never want to put down the book and return to the tiresome reality that I live in.”
“I’m sorry…” The words feel so inadequate. It’s a phrase used so flippantly it could pertain to anything from a brisk apology for bumping into someone, to condolences for the loss of a loved one. It makes the weight of it feel lesser, even though I can’t think of any other words that could convey what I want to express.
“Why does no one view themselves with the same value that everyone else sees?”
“Experiences change people,” he says. “For the worse or for the better, or for somewhere in between.” ═════════════════ ╰┈➤ Content review ♫ ”But I kept runnin’ for a soft place to fall.” ♫
➸ Age Rating - 12+
➸ Language - None.
➸ Romance/Sexual - Several undetailed kisses.
➸ Violence - Sword-fighting, stabbing someone with a dagger, using magical powers to set people on fire (though they are doused with water soon after), FMC is shot with an arrow. Basically what you would expect for a fantasy novel involving a war, but not very detailed.
➸ Religious/Spiritual - Several mentions of God and praying..
➸ Magic - Very minimally used gifts called Talents (some people can heal, one can see glimpses of the future), and Irelia uses her Talent.
➸ LGBTQ - None.
➸ Alcohol/Drugs - Mentions of other people drinking wine at balls (portrayed negatively).
➸ Other Notes/Possible Triggers - Abused by her father (not very detailed), ignored by her family (again, not majorly detailed).
Sarah Pekkanen’s next thrilling novel, The Night Nanny (coming summer of 2027), was everything I’ve come to expect from this insanely talented author. Stay tuned for my full review next year.
Read a very early stage beta read for my SILs sister and had a great time! It was a romance novel à la Abby Jimenez, dealing with real life issues along the way of the characters finding love. Very sweet, great banter, will definitely recommend if/when it gets published 🤩
I absolutely loved this story! The faith themes woven throughout the pages were so well done! I adored the main character and his morality was such a green flag even when faced with difficult decisions.
