I am honored to say that I was able to beta read Revival by Keira Mueller! Author of High Heels and Hay Bales, a middle grade summer adventure, I was wondering how Keira was going to pull off such a different genre—NA science fiction/dystopian. But let me tell you…she did it phenomenally.
This book was perhaps the most perfect mixture of science, love, redemption, and adventure. Keira weaved themes of religion, feminism, and relationship trauma seamlessly together to create a story that will hook you and pull on your heart strings. I couldn’t help but binge the last 40ish percent, because I was so invested (screen-induced headaches be darned).
You all better be reading this when it releases, or I’ll come find you 🤗

Avalanche - First of all, love her name. Second of all, her character development in particular was incredible and realistic. I grew to really love her over the course of the story.
Zander - He stole my heart and will not be giving it back anytime soon. He was so kind and gentlemanly and funny! Definitely a green flag kind of man.
Eitan - Now him on the other hand…RED FLAG GUYS, RED FLAG! I better not catch any of you sympathizing with him.

I don’t want to say much here, but I just loved the ending! Especially when all the tech went crazy, that was so funny!

On a more serious note though, there is no doubt in my mind that Maria has insane talent when it comes to writing. I’m honored that she shared her debut novel with me and let me beta read it! (thank you again!)

Dawson Cash, center for the Rockford Black Ice, hides a dark secret behind a cold exterior and lethal skill. He skates like he’s got nothing to lose, and that’s the whole problem.
To the team, he’s their saving grace—-the best player the school has seen in a decade. To those who love him, he’s a ticking time bomb, slowly crumbling as he pushes his body closer to the brink.
Juniper Banks never wanted hockey. She wanted the internship with the football team, the one that would get her a much needed scholarship. But now she’s stuck with a game she doesn’t understand, a pair of skates she can’t use, and center who snaps whenever she comes near.
When her warnings to him come true, Dawson is taken away from the one thing that is keeping him together. Spiraling and exposed, he has nothing left to live for. But grace isn’t earned, it’s received. And Dawson must learn what it means to accept it.
Thrown together, June and Dawson have to learn to forgive and be forgiven and that they don’t need to change themselves to be loved. It’s a story of hope, pain, darkness, and ultimately the freedom that only Christ can bring.
This novel feels like a Noah Kahan song on paper.

Dawson stared at the white scars etched on the inside of his wrists. They looked like cracks in a frozen lake surface—his surface. Faded and worn, they were reminders of a side of him he didn’t want to be seen. The side that said Dawson Cash didn’t want to live.
You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. “Whose truth? The truth of a God that does not exist or the truth of some man who thinks he died for everyone’s problems? There’s only one truth: my own.”

This story is for everyone who suffered in silence, thinking they had nobody left who cared. It’s for the overworked and the overwhelmed. For the people who sat in the dark wondering what it’s all for.
Dawson is a broken, hurt character who doesn’t think God’s grace is enough to bring him back. Abused, abandoned, forgotten, left to succumb to his pain and anger. He speaks for every over-working, depressed, sick, and vulnerable person.
Dawson is a character who has become close to my heart, even in the very short time we have been acquainted. He deals with things that no person should go through, pain nobody should suffer, and he doesn’t have the one thing that could heal him. If I didn’t have Christ, I would be much like him. He’s an English major and a hockey player because those are the only two things that gave him something. Hockey was his reason for being, books were his escape from reality. He dyes his hair and changes his appearance because he looks like his father. He doesn’t see the people who love him even while they’re right in front of him.
I think all of us are Dawson in some small way. That’s why I wrote him. That’s why I’m writing this whole story.
Even as I’m writing this the radio is playing “Where Would I be Without Jesus” by Peter Burton and that song is such an anthem for this novel.
Since I started plotting this story I keep randomly seeing the name Dawson places, songs play in the radio that somehow connect to the story in some way, and verses keep appearing everywhere that have a pull to this story. I’m taking it as a sign from the Lord that this story has to be written. Even if it never gets trad published or self published, I think I need to write it anyway.

𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩: This story faces the life of a young hockey player, Dawson Cash, who deals with over-training syndrome, an eating disorder, insomnia, depression, self harm, and suicidal tendencies. It’s his story of growth from pain to salvation, but it’s a hard, heavy road that he must walk to get to Christ.
Suicide is a prominent part of the story as Dawson deals with believing that grace isn’t real and that there’s nothing after death. He’d rather just not exist than keep going on in the same broken, painful world.
He nearly ends his life once in the novel and several times in the past. It will be handled with great care and will remain ungraphic.
Due to how Dawson’s character is there may be some very minor swearing, though nothing vulgar, crass, strong, or inappropriate. It will only occur 2-3 times in the whole story.
There is little to no romantic content, though it may be alluded to. The romantic content may include undetailed kisses and fondness between a married couple, mentions of thinking someone is hot/pretty/handsome/beautiful, and some admiring/looking. There’s still the potential for a kiss scene but I am not certain I’ll include it because I don’t want it to wash out the story or pull away from the message I am trying to convey. A character wears a slinky dress and feels very uncomfortable. A possible mention of hooking up/sleeping around (Dawson himself isn’t a womanizer and sees no value in pursuing a romantic relationship physical or non physical.)
There will be a LOT of faith content to balance out the heaviness of this story, but it won’t be a shove-it-down-your-throat Christian story. I am greatly inspired authors like Francine Rivers and T.I. Lowe, and so the story will be more similar to them (though Black Ice is not a romance novel).

Thrown together, June and Dawson have to learn to forgive and be forgiven and that they don’t need to change themselves to be loved. It’s a story of hope, pain, darkness, and ultimately the freedom that only Christ can bring.
This novel feels like a Noah Kahan song on paper.

Dawson stared at the white scars etched on the inside of his wrists. They looked like cracks in a frozen lake surface—his surface. Faded and worn, they were reminders of a side of him he didn’t want to be seen. The side that said Dawson Cash didn’t want to live.

This story is for everyone who suffered in silence, thinking they had nobody left who cared. It’s for the overworked and the overwhelmed. For the people who sat in the dark wondering what it’s all for.
Dawson is a broken, hurt character who doesn’t think God’s grace is enough to bring him back. Abused, abandoned, forgotten, left to succumb to his pain and anger. He speaks for every over-working, depressed, sick, and vulnerable person.
Dawson is a character who has become close to my heart, even in the very short time we have been acquainted. He deals with things that no person should go through, pain nobody should suffer, and he doesn’t have the one thing that could heal him. If I didn’t have Christ, I would be much like him. He’s an English major and a hockey player because those are the only two things that gave him something. Hockey was his reason for being, books were his escape from reality. He dyes his hair and changes his appearance because he looks like his father. He doesn’t see the people who love him even while they’re right in front of him.
I think all of us are Dawson in some small way. That’s why I wrote him. That’s why I’m writing this whole story.
Even as I’m writing this the radio is playing “Where Would I be Without Jesus” by Peter Burton and that song is such an anthem for this novel.
Since I started plotting this story I keep randomly seeing the name Dawson places, songs play in the radio that somehow connect to the story in some way, and verses keep appearing everywhere that have a pull to this story. I’m taking it as a sign from the Lord that this story has to be written. Even if it never gets trad published or self published, I think I need to write it anyway.

𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩: This story faces the life of a young hockey player, Dawson Cash, who deals with over-training syndrome, an eating disorder, insomnia, depression, self harm, and suicidal tendencies. It’s his story of growth from pain to salvation, but it’s a hard, heavy road that he must walk to get to Christ.
Suicide is a prominent part of the story as Dawson deals with believing that grace isn’t real and that there’s nothing after death. He’d rather just not exist than keep going on in the same broken, painful world.
He nearly ends his life once in the novel and several times in the past. It will be handled with great care and will remain ungraphic.
Due to how Dawson’s character is there may be some very minor swearing, though nothing vulgar, crass, strong, or inappropriate. It will only occur 2-3 times in the whole story.
There is little to no romantic content, though it may be alluded to. The romantic content may include undetailed kisses and fondness between a married couple, mentions of thinking someone is hot/pretty/handsome/beautiful, and some admiring/looking. There’s still the potential for a kiss scene but I am not certain I’ll include it because I don’t want it to wash out the story or pull away from the message I am trying to convey. A character wears a slinky dress and feels very uncomfortable. A possible mention of hooking up/sleeping around (Dawson himself isn’t a womanizer and sees no value in pursuing a romantic relationship physical or non physical.)
There will be a LOT of faith content to balance out the heaviness of this story, but it won’t be a shove-it-down-your-throat Christian story. I am greatly inspired authors like Francine Rivers and T.I. Lowe, and so the story will be more similar to them (though Black Ice is not a romance novel).

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!!!! Maria’s writing is so incredible, and this is one of my favorite fantasies now! Thank you so much Maria for letting me beta read this! I am going to be recommending this book forever! I was hooked as soon as I started reading! I can’t wait for it to come out, so everyone can read it!!
The setting, characters, vibes, writing, plot, and everything was sooo good!! I flew through this book so fast and can’t wait for book two!

First of all, thank you so much to my dear friend Jaycee for allowing me to beta read The Elemental War. I feel very honored that you trusted me with it, and I’ve loved getting to share our writing journeys.
My review is based on the current state of the draft, but I’m really excited to see what the author can do with some more edits, especially given that this is her debut novel at age 15.
I can tell that Jaycee is very good at writing emotional scenes, and I found the romance very sweet and endearing, even if it lacked foundation at times. She is a MASTER at chapter endings. Every single one of them made me so excited to read the new chapter, which I desperately need to apply to my own stories.
The Elemental War follows Irelia, a princess who escapes her abusive family and runs away to another kingdom, becoming part of their family while fighting the war against her father.

Irelia - I’m not really sure what I think about her. She was sweet, fun, and caring, but she seemed to change personalities a few times, and I never got a good grasp on her personality because we didn’t see her in the Act 1 story world. I just wish she had some more foundation so we could see how much she grew.
Ezri - I honestly didn’t love him at first; he gives Prince Charming vibes and is always exactly what the FMC needs. We saw a little bit more of his conflict later in the story, but he was just a little too perfect, if you know what I mean. Very sweet and kind, though.
Laia - She is the sweetest! I didn’t always have the greatest grasp on her character, but she obviously loved her siblings and was such a fun, bubbly girl to have around.

“I’m sorry…” The words feel so inadequate. It’s a phrase used so flippantly it could pertain to anything from a brisk apology for bumping into someone, to condolences for the loss of a loved one. It makes the weight of it feel lesser, even though I can’t think of any other words that could convey what I want to express.
“Why does no one view themselves with the same value that everyone else sees?”
“Experiences change people,” he says. “For the worse or for the better, or for somewhere in between.”

Guysssss this was really gooddddd! From page one I was like oh my goodness this is amazing!! The writing and characters and plot and themes and everything is all so well done!! I loved the writing especially, it was very yummy lol 😂 the characters are wonderful and lovable and the whole book was madness at its finest and an absolute delight to read about. I'm so excited for the day when this will be published and others will be able to read it as well!!!

Read a very early stage beta read for my SILs sister and had a great time! It was a romance novel à la Abby Jimenez, dealing with real life issues along the way of the characters finding love. Very sweet, great banter, will definitely recommend if/when it gets published 🤩
