The sickly servant. A powerful young master. An alliance Kingdoms are made from.

Centuries before a certain dungeon first met a wise pink wisp, the world was torn apart by war. For a time, even the Guild was shaken to its core as a wave of necromantic cultivators surged forth from the dark corners of the earth.

Garron feels the impact of war differently than most, as a servant in the estate of a Mage that left for the war. The young lord Andros and his servant have been left in the tender care of the ambitious cultivator, Jackson. The workload is a death sentence: Andros is forced to train in near-isolation, and Garron has fallen ill. One fateful night, they make a run for survival and freedom.

Jackson doesn’t take kindly to his meal ticket vanishing into the night. The Hunt is on.

A Divine Dungeon Universe.

A good fun delve into a not yet known part of the history of the Caliverse. And within its opening sentences appears The Master...

The book is well written. The narration is also quite good in the Audible release. I've not read anything by this author nor heard this narrator before, to the best of my knowledge.

My only negative is that there were a number of instances where it seems some editing was done to the recording. Occasionally a sentence or phrase simply had a different tone/quality from the surrounding audio. It wasn't better or worse, just noticeably different and that takes you (me) out of the moment.

Two boys + 1 juvenile dungeon = fantastic

I loved it. The two boys take turns saving each other (their relationship isn't as unbalanced as the write up makes it sound) while trying to evade the dread Captain who has been the lordling's guardian and jailor.
On their own, the boys could have had a decent to average YA book. But... Dakota Krout does a fantastic job with [D&D type] dungeons. Once the boys meet and befriend a young dungeon core (and his Wisp), the story becomes far more interesting. The dungeon core, Typo, is fun and adorable (in a dungeon core way) and does his best to be a good friend, while the boys help him learn and grow as a dungeon.
The end of the book provides a conclusion but is by no means the end of the story. I look forward to reading the next book when it comes out, both to see Typo learn and grow and to see how the unresolved problems from book 1 end up getting resolved in the long run.
Side note: It was helpful to me to have read The Divine Dungeon series because it provides context in terms of essence, mana, dungeons, wisps, etc. However, this is a completely different series. No Cal. Not even by some other name (like "the System," cough, cough). Instead we have Typo who is adorable in ways Cal could never be, while sharing a similar nature/species characteristics.

I love how the author does Typo's dialogue and how his ability to communicate changes over the course of the novel. He is absolutely the best character and his relationship with Garron is truly special. I really, really look forward to seeing where this story goes.

This was really fun... after receiving book2 Roar I decided to pick-up "Hunt" bk1 so I wouldn't find myself foundering and I'd know exactly what's going on! I did find this book to be a slow starter. As it's about to boys Andros and Garron after escaping from their assigned Stewart a very evil man... Initially it has a real Tom and Huck vibe, with our boys a lordling and his best friend a sickly servant at his side. But I was already absorbed into their adventure come what may. It wasn’t until Garron accidentally ran across a young dungeon with zero power of it's own. That Garron under duress made a pact with the dungeon wisp Talia.
You're gonna need this book to find out what happens next. Better yet grab the audio because Daniel Wisniewski is great!

So much fun

It's nice getting back and seeing little Fishies again, it has been so long. The cleverness, without scheming, was quite refreshing. People can have good ideas without them needing to be part of a grand plan, and Lion's Lineage shows that well. Instead of Artorian's thought processes that have had time to ferment and be processed over and over, these boys are still young and rather than having huge plans that require schemes and cleverness, they instead use cleverness and resources to live until they can make grand schemes later.

Great Story! Lots of High Stakes Action!

Garron, our main character, is a dying servant who knows he only has a few weeks longer to live. His friend, Andros, the noble heir, believes he has the key to his friends survival.

This book covers what the two do to try and save Garron, and evade capture by the devious cultivator whose usurping Andros’ home. It is set in a wilderness where two young men have to fight to survive.

Very much enjoyed. Looking forward to book 2

The lion roars

This story was previewed in the collection of short stories published a year or two ago. But now we have the full thing and the ending makes clear there will be more. I had wondered about “what’s next” almost to the last page, as it seemed the big battle was going to an obvious conclusion. Then it didn’t. Nice.

Two friends one noble-born one a sickly servant. The noble makes the decision to escape with his friend to save him. The hunt to find them takes the pair to a dungeon, escaping monstrous animals and a fire. Another great addition to the Divine Dungeon mythos.

A weighty start to an epic book

The start of the book was amazing, knowing the fate and the lineage of the character before the book started was amazing. Then going to an unknown to only become the know was also genius. Can’t wait to see what you do with the series!

What a fun read.

I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to this series. It reminds me a lot of Johnathan Brooks but the dungeon isn't homicidal. Great start to a series. Check it out.

Good read

Different path than I've seen in a while. Sick kid gets help and starts getting stronger. Ends with delusions of grandeur but based on the prologue he Will fulfill them.😊

3+

I liked this as a start to a new series better than the Divine Dungeon series I just finished by the same author. I think the characters have more potential for depth.

I may be burning myself out on cultivation genre, though. I'm pretty sick of long lists of stats and characters who do nothing but grind.
