An irritated Pokemon might tell you to stop what you're doing. An irritated animal will probably just attack you. Pokemon, for all their power, would be open books and a breeze to care for to any competent animal handler on Earth. After a fiery death, a professional zookeeper who never outgrew Pokemon games ends up in the world of Pokemon. The entire world is thrown onto its side.
The good: Borne of Caution, blew me away with its thoughtful version of the world of Pokemon. The pokemon are thinking, feeling, individuals that behave and act according to their personalities. It acknowledges some of the more comical and childish parts of the show and videogames to bring to life the whimsical world we all fell in love with as a child. The theme of trauma and loss is also dealt with in a way that feels respectful and emotional, giving realness to the story.
The bad: Some of the character conflict and development has felt a bit abrupt. The author itself admitted that he has deviated from the outline that he and a friend made a few years back. he did announce a few months that said outline would be corrected to ensure that the story became just as good as they envisioned. That did mean a small hiatus, but the author has resumed the posting of new chapters.
He doesn't have a consistent schedule, but you can expect around 1 to 2 chaptes a month, each ranging from 4 to 8k words each
My final verdict: A good Pokemon fanfic where characters still have personalities and development. Some of that development feels clumsy, but it's still really good. I do reccomend it and hope you enjoy it just as much as I did
a staggering fanfic accomplishment imo, such a gift to any pokemon fan to read. If you’ve ever wished the anime could have been aged up a little and lean more into some of the implications of the world building while keeping the heart and character arcs, this is that. the fights rule and there are a lot of them. the progression rules. everything is really creative and clearly engages with pokemon on a very thoughtful level.
somewhat of a shame that there’s a throwaway african character in the beginning written in dialect—it isn’t pulled off very well but you can tell it’s not ill intentioned. still kind of awkward and i almost put the book down at that point, would have been such a loss to miss out on 1,500 pages of amazing pokemon content for like five pages of kludgy writing. so id suggest powering through.
also this isn’t a romance, at least not in the way you might think. which is good. for at least half the book i was earnestly concerned i was going to have to read a scene of this dude boning his vulpix. if that’s a disappointing spoiler for you, uhh, sorry. but also probably helpful. go elsewhere and seek ye smut traveler.
I was expecting fluff and got some slightly more thought out fluff than I was expecting. A lot of fun, especially after the first quarter or so. Second book read up through the *huge* cliff hanger. Now waiting for chapters.
