Think of Zootopia set in Victorian England minus the bunny and the fox. Mayhem abounds in this action-packed adventure to parts of London you rarely read about.

Strap yourself in for an rollicking ride.
As you read this you'll feel the book humming with mystery and a little romance and I guarantee you'll be intrigued as you read this tale set in Victorian England.
Constable Jackson Forge has the eager beaver mentality of trying to prove his worth being new on the force but he ends up bumbling and fumbling around and just mucking everything up he tries to do on the important case he's taken on. He kind of reminds me of Mr. Magoo and truthfully I kind of feel sorry for him.
The dark underbelly of Victorian England is where the case takes us from the stench of the sewers to the jails and everywhere in between that you don't even want to imagine.
Forced to work with a woman, Kat who is a swindler , taking from the rich to give to the poor. She has information he needs . The friction between them is real as they are forced to work with each other for different reasons for the one common purpose of finding a man.
This book reminds me of when my son started out on the police force but he didn't make a bumbling mess of things.
The Thief of Blackfriars Lane was a fast read and kept me intrigued the whole way through. Every book I read by this author just gets better and better.

Rookie constable Jackson Forge’s first assignment is to find a missing cabby. To do that, he needs thief ringleader Kit Turner’s local knowledge and connections. In this unlikely alliance both have to trust each other with their lives as they unravel criminal activity with ties to City public office.
The Thief of Blackfriars Lane is the standalone novel written by Michelle Griep, published by Barbour Fiction. The plot is set in London 1885, and we follow fresh-out-of-training Constable Jackson Forge who is assigned to find the missing cab driver who is thief ringleader Kit Turner’s foster dad. With her extensive local knowledge and connections, Jackson gets to experience an underworld of dangerous cutthroats and cheats while orphan Kit has to learn to trust again. They deal with life threatening situations connected to criminal activity with ties to City public office.
Main character is rookie Constable Jackson Forge who seems to be a well rounded character from a relatively secure family background. He seems the voice of reason in this story and tries to keep Kit away from the worst of the life threatening madness she gets into.
Supporting character is thief ringleader and orphan Kit Turner who is a feisty, brave and very resourceful young woman hiding her loneliness and vulnerability. She is complex and struggles to trust, which makes her realistic and appealing character my favorite.
I loved how this plot was action packed and drew me into underworld London of 1800s. The stunning descriptions, particularly of the London underground (before tubes), made me feel a part the plot. I felt the characters were relatable and I enjoyed how Jackson and Kit kept meeting cynical, dangerous characters scheming to make big money and get one over on competition.
The excellent research built an exciting plot offering all my favorite elements of a story. One part mystery and one part romance all tied together in a historical setting. With the Dickensian feel, the amusing writing and dialogue made it one of the most entertaining reads in a very long time.
My favorite part was description of how the relationship between Jackson and Kit developed from the initial friendship to budding romance, as they faced mortal danger together. The descriptions of the extreme poverty, fear and despair of a woman who tries to support her children while suffering illness, was not my favorite. But I appreciate the dramatic effect. Michelle Griep is fast becoming one of my go-to-authors in historical romance, because I enjoy her action packed plots so much. I’ll be eagle-eying booksellers for her next release.
Anyone who enjoys action packed historical romance with a Dickensian twist would love this. As will fans of Michelle Griep’s other work. Similar authors to explore might be Abigail Wilson or Sarah E. My personal Rating- Four Stars
This was my first book by this author and I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Robin Hood or thieves plots always attract my attention so I knew I had to try this one out. Bottom line? I quite like Kit. I could just leave it at that, but I truly liked her gumption, her fierceness, but also her emotions felt very realistic. Learning her story, you can understand why she’s jaded towards God—but here comes Jackson who witnesses to her and sets the record straight that she needs to trust God.
I’m typically a fast reader, but I flew through these 300 pages in three hours. I wish I had slowed down some, but I did definitely enjoy it. The ending was great and I love the plotline of conning the bad guys.
My one criticism would be that I wasn’t a fan of some crude men’s suggestive comments about or towards Kit. I understand the time period and area there were in, but it was a bit much. I would have also preferred Kit and Jackson to not have noticed so may physical things about the other, but by the end, it was less overall than I was expecting.
“The Thief of Blackfriars Lane” was a novel that I really enjoyed the plot of, and it’s now made me curious about the author’s other books. Like I said earlier, this was a pleasant surprise at the end of the year!

The Thief of Blackfriars Lane was an awesome read! 4 stars!
I listened to this on audio and the narrator was phenomenal! I highly recommend the audio version. She does a great job with the different character voices. I was on the edge of my seat!
Set in 1885, the story starts off with Constable Jackson Forge crossing paths with Kit Turner in the streets of Victorian London. Kit’s main job is swindling the rich to give to the poor – helping others. However, when a local cab driver goes missing, Jackson’s new assignment is finding the missing man, but he’ll need Kit’s help to do it! If Jackson doesn’t find the missing cabby, he will lose his job and if Kit doesn’t help, he will arrest her for thievery. The story takes off from there as Jackson and Kit get into more than they bargained for throughout their search for the missing cabby!
I really enjoyed this story, no real complaints, just a fun, mysterious 4 star read!
This was a wild ride full of mystery, action and even some romance! The faith content here was great too! We have so many conversations surrounding trusting God, prayer, surrender, heaven etc.
Also, I loved the main characters! Kit was a force to be reckoned with and Jackson never gave up trying to help her and solve the case! The romance was also a nice addition 😊 I can’t wait for book 2!

My first book by this author and I enjoyed it. It is written with a very positive viewpoint and overcoming the difficulties in life and make the best of it. The story is strong and has a nice buildup between the H/h and ties up the mysteries in a way the makes sense. Both Jackson and Kit are strong characters with well written backgrounds. The side characters are solid but not fleshed out. An enjoyable read with another book by this author on my tbr list.

*In honour of this stupendous tale I've researched some Victorian slang to incorporate into my review. Seriously, how did these words go out of fashion? Mini dictionary provided at end of the review but I think you'll understand from context. (I know this is all kinds of bookish nerdiness but, really, is anyone surprised?)
I am awash with 'enthuzimuzzy'over this captivating story as my 'gigglemug' surely testifies. I can't stop grinning. Or swooning. In between bouts of the 'morbs' because it's all over for me now. :-(
If you are a fan of Sarah M. Eden's Dread Penny Society series or even Roseanna M. White's Shadows Over England series (though this one is in a later time period), you will love The Thief of Blackfriars Lane!
Griep weaves a tantalizing tale of struggle and survival in Victorian London's treacherous underworld. Jackson is thrust into the 'skilamlink' dealings of nefarious characters -- including one very beguiling and elusive female Robin Hood. The connection between these two is why toe-curls were invented! The banter caged in their fiery stand-offs is delicious! And the way they warily circle around each other, gradually learning to trust is all kinds of romantical divine!
Tons of action and adventure and a complicated plot fraught with danger and betrayal along with some very clever surprise twists kept me in a 'mad as hops' state right through to the exciting conclusion.
I listened to the audible edition narrated by Nan McNamara and loved every blessed second!

I enjoyed this little mystery very much. The characters of Jackson and Kit kept the story interesting with their chemistry, bits of humor, and working well together as "detectives". With Jackson trying to redeem what happened to his brother and Kit trying to figure out why she was left at the foundling home and trying to help those less fortunate than she. They worked well together trying to find her old friend Joe Card, who was behind the mysterious shipments, and who the button Kit was given when she was abandoned belonged to.
My only criticism is the cover. I hate it. It makes Jackson and Kit look older than their 23 and 20ish ages. But would definitely recommend this to my friends and relatives to read.

On the one hand, this was a really fun story in multiple ways. I loved the setting and its accompanying dialect—it reminded me of the back streets of Mary Poppins' London. I half expected a chimney sweep to pop round the corner and dance a jig on the roof of Shaw Stowage, or a lamplighter to appear from the mist and "trip a little light fantastic." Griep did an excellent job capturing dialect without making it too hard for the reader to decipher. Jackson and Kit were both great characters, and I liked the theme of depending on God instead of ourselves or our circumstances. I loved the names, too: Graybone, Beanstaple, Poxley. Overall, I really enjoyed the writing style.
On the other hand…the constant deception really wore on me. I didn't like the blurring of right and wrong. Yes, a lot of life is lived in the "murky grey," but there's a lot of black and white, too, and I think God is pretty clear about a lifestyle of lying and deceit, even if it's for a good cause. I also grew weary of Kit's attitude toward men. I understand her distrust, and I'm all for capable heroines, but her attitude felt off in this historical setting. (I'm admittedly not a fan of the "feminist before her time" stereotype in historical fiction, so if this doesn't bother you, please disregard.) Also, some of the romantic scenes were a bit suggestive for my taste.
For those reasons (mainly the first one), I had a hard time really connecting with the story. But it was well written and an entertaining romp through the underside of Victorian England. (If I ever have to navigate the sewers and underground railways of London, I want someone like Jackson and Kit with me.) And there's one line I'm taking with me: "It is far better to be a failure at what you love than a success at what you hate."

As always, Michelle Griep pens a top notch Regency tale.

All is not what it seems when he meets Kit Turner, who he perceives as a swindler and a thief, she leads him a merry chase until they team up in the search for three men who go missing.
Ms. Griep writes a convincing story with colorful, realistic characters and puts us in the story with lots of action and an underpinning of faith that teaches us lessons.

What a fun and quirky mystery that takes place in 1855 London. Jackson Forge, a rookie constable, aims to keep the roads of London safe especially after a childhood tragedy that still weighs heavy on his mind daily. Kit Turner grew up with street smarts and learned how to survive on her own. One day both of their lives will change forever when they cross each other’s path. They figure out they both have the same goal and embark on a journey full of banter and excitement.
This is a new author for me but Griep did not disappoint. She wove this Victorian tale so effortlessly that it transported me to this time period and I enjoyed every second of it. Full of action and mystery it certainly kept me turning the pages.I absolutely loved the ending and I look forward to trying out other titles from this author in the future.

I absolutely loved this book! It is filled with Michelle Griep’s wonderfully unique characters! She takes us on an adventure with these characters as they try to track down a missing person! Michelle Griep’s books are always a must read for me! I highly recommend this book!

What a fun historical mystery!
Following a childhood tragedy, Jackson Forge aims to be a part of the police force that keeps the streets of London safe.
Kit Turner grew up on the streets and walks the line of legality in her efforts to help the poor in London.
When their paths cross, they merge an unlikely and shaky partnership. Over time, Jackson and Kit find the core of good in each other.
This novel has several comical moments and the mystery itself was interesting to see unfold.

When a local cab driver goes missing, Jackson is tasked with finding the man, and the only way to do that is by enlisting Kit’s help. If Jackson doesn’t find the cabby, he’ll be fired. If Kit doesn’t help Jackson, he’ll arrest her for thievery. Yet neither of them realize those are the least of their problems.

This is a fun historical adventure romping through Victorian England. This tale takes a street smart young lady and a new constable teaming up to find a missing man. They uncover a deception and the culprit behind it. There is a sweet and light romance too.
I enjoyed this book and thank Barbour publishing for giving me a copy of it. This is my honest opinion.

Michelle Griep is truly one of my favourite authors. Reading this book confirmed that. I would buy any book I see with her name on it, no need to even read the back cover. I couldn’t say that about many authors. This was a captivating Victorian era romance set in London, full of romance, mystery and intrigue. Yes, please! The characters were well thought out and highly entertaining. Griep’s stories are always well paced, not allowing the reader to grow bored, and have a solid ending. I honestly have no negatives to mention here. This is an excellent book that I highly recommend to any historical fiction fan.

I listened to the audio for this story and really loved the experience, as the narrator was a good one and the plot and characters engaging.
The story moves quickly and there is no lack of action. It feels like they make it from one corner of London to another more than once, and in short order at that!
There are a lot of heartfelt moments along the way as the MCs get to know each other and try to find the missing cabbie together. I really appreciated that the story's more focused on action than romance and that the two got to know each other as they worked together for a solution without originally thinking of romance.
What I didn't like: Kit's default was deception in a lot of ways, and that got on my nerves a few times. The last third of the book seemed more disjointed than the previous sections and the time skips were longer. Several of the plot points seemed a bit more of a leap than a logical step but by that time I was invested in the characters and it didn't bother me as much as it would have toward the beginning. A lot of the side characters had rather abrupt endings and I was left wanting more detail on what happened to them.

Michelle Griep has never disappointed me with her historical fiction, and this one definitely meets her high standards. Set in Victorian London, Jackson Forge is a rookie constable, and Kit Turner is a Robin Hood thief from Blackfriars Lane. Headed to his first day at work, Jackson gets his pocket picked in a well developed scheme designed by Kit and her underlings. The action rolls from there and never stops til the last page of the book.
This story was filled with everything a reader would want in a good read: dialogue so appropriate to the time period of London and of the uneducated of Blackfriars Lane, non-stop suspense, humor, romance, shenanigans, and more. Jackson and Kit were well developed characters each with loveable characteristics as well as things they were trying to improve. This book delighted me with its touch of Oliver Twist, its hint of Robin Hood, and the rollicking ride from start to finish.
Don't miss this one because it gets better with every page.

I was introduced to Michelle Griep when I read Brentwood's Ward that I thorughly enjoyed. So when provided an opportunity to read another of her books, I was interested. The Thief of Blackfriars Lane was very enjoyable and had me engaged from beginning to end. I love the storytelling by the author as she develops her characters in the story. The Hero is a constable trying to meet the praise of his superiors and the heroine, Kit is a young woman who knows the streets of London. The two are slowly welded together making their love story very nice although there is poverty, sadness and hope that backdrops the lives of the characters.
The characters jumped right off the page and became true to form for this reader. Another well plotted and written story by Ms. Griep, and I recommend this book if you are looking for a clean historical and sweet romance that have page-turning mystery and intrigue.

Initially, I was drawn to reading The Thief of Blackfriars Lane simply because of the cover, I had read previous novels by Michelle Griep but this one really drew me in.
I loved the banter and blossoming relationship that was between Jackson and Kit. They both had spunk in spades, the action was non-stop and it kept my attention the whole time. I wanted to have more time to read this but I had time restraints otherwise I would've finished this sooner. Other reviews have described The Thief of Blackfriars as a romp through Victorian London and I would definitely agree with that. It was a fun and entertaining read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The heroine Kit is such an interesting mix of responsbile and unexpected. And the hero? Jackson is so determiined to do everything right that it becomes hillarious as he's thrust in different situations with the heroine in an attempt to salvage his job as a constable in London. A fun caper with quite a few twists. Good characters and a different look at London. A good read for those who love romance, history, and 19th Century England.

This was my first book by Michelle Griep,and it didn’t disappoint! It was so fun reading! I loved the banter between Jackson and Kit. They were a good match. I really liked how this was sort of like Zootopia and a Robin Hood retelling. That was cool. I couldn’t believe who it was! I thought I knew it the whole time,but I was wrong. Also,that ending! I did not see that coming! Overall,this was a fun mystery.

The Thief of Blackfriars Lane (2021, Shiloh Run Press) by Michelle Griep is a standalone romantic mystery set in 1885 London. Ms. Griep is one of my favorite Christian fiction authors. She writes beautiful, well-researched historicals. My husband, teenage daughter, and I have all enjoyed her books.
Rating: 4 ½ stars, which I bumped down only because of the substitute swears. Most people would not have a problem with it. I wish there were a way to give 4.5 stars.
Is it clean/chaste? Yes, very!
Other content issues: Occasionally, the language isn't what I would prefer. No outright swearing, but what I consider to be substitute swearing crops up occasionally. Some examples include:
Christian elements: God is referred to throughout the book in a respectful way. "May God Bless you, madam." "God's mercies were new every day." "A little help here, Lord…" "Measuring God by how people - even godly people - have mistreated you is not a good measuring stick.
The heroine: Kit Turner, 23, is the titular "thief." But… she doesn't actually steal. She's more like a con artist, playing on people's sympathies, in order to go provide for those in need - a bit of a Robin Hood figure. Deceiving people in order to do good is misguided thinking. It is always possible to do the right thing without doing a wrong thing, though it sometimes requires a leap of faith in God or some creativity.
The hero: Jackson Forge, 23, is a newly hired constable, fulfilling his childhood dream. He has a personal agenda from his past, stemming from "that ugly day he'd failed his brother" and is eager to right wrongs. However, disappointingly, his initial assignment is to guard a fabric warehouse while the other officers are given a mission to investigate the disappearance of two high-profile men from London. Jackson has a string of bad luck and isn't making a good impression on his superior officer. "What kind of constable couldn't apprehend a woman? Maybe it would be better to just turn in his uniform now before anyone realized how ill-suited he really was for this job, no matter how much he wanted it."
The plot: Kit has her own mystery - the disappearance of Joe the jarvey, her father figure. "Whoever thought to cross our Joe just crossed me as well." Then when Jackson is on the verge of being fired, his superior warns, "I will give you two days, Forge. That's forty-eight hours to find this woman's missing husband and save your job in the process. Am I clear?" The woman is Joe the jarvey's wife, which, in effect, puts Kit and Jackson on the same mission.
What I liked:
*Ms. Griep succeeded in creating a fun, atypical heroine.
*The hero and heroine were both flawed and each had something to teach the other!
What I didn’t like: Just the language issues mentioned above!
The bottom line: This unique romantic mystery full of adventure was a delight. I'd especially recommend this book to fans of historical fiction or Christian fiction. If you want to read something Christmasy for the upcoming month, try 12 Days at Bleakly Manor , which is also by Michelle Griep.

Christian elements: God is referred to throughout the book in a respectful way. "May God Bless you, madam." "God's mercies were new every day." "A little help here, Lord…" "Measuring God by how people - even godly people - have mistreated you is not a good measuring stick.
The heroine: Kit Turner, 23, is the titular "thief." But… she doesn't actually steal. She's more like a con artist, playing on people's sympathies, in order to go provide for those in need - a bit of a Robin Hood figure. Deceiving people in order to do good is misguided thinking. It is always possible to do the right thing without doing a wrong thing, though it sometimes requires a leap of faith in God or some creativity.
The hero: Jackson Forge, 23, is a newly hired constable, fulfilling his childhood dream. He has a personal agenda from his past, stemming from "that ugly day he'd failed his brother" and is eager to right wrongs. However, disappointingly, his initial assignment is to guard a fabric warehouse while the other officers are given a mission to investigate the disappearance of two high-profile men from London. Jackson has a string of bad luck and isn't making a good impression on his superior officer. "What kind of constable couldn't apprehend a woman? Maybe it would be better to just turn in his uniform now before anyone realized how ill-suited he really was for this job, no matter how much he wanted it."
The plot: Kit has her own mystery - the disappearance of Joe the jarvey, her father figure. "Whoever thought to cross our Joe just crossed me as well." Then when Jackson is on the verge of being fired, his superior warns, "I will give you two days, Forge. That's forty-eight hours to find this woman's missing husband and save your job in the process. Am I clear?" The woman is Joe the jarvey's wife, which, in effect, puts Kit and Jackson on the same mission.
What I liked:
*Ms. Griep succeeded in creating a fun, atypical heroine.
*The hero and heroine were both flawed and each had something to teach the other!
What I didn’t like: Just the language issues mentioned above!
The bottom line: This unique romantic mystery full of adventure was a delight. I'd especially recommend this book to fans of historical fiction or Christian fiction. If you want to read something Christmasy for the upcoming month, try 12 Days at Bleakly Manor , which is also by Michelle Griep.

Characters: Both Kit and Jackson were entertaining, well-developed characters, and I'm glad the author plans to continue their story in another book. Kit and Jackson had their flaws, which made them relatable. They also had backstories that added depth to their character.
Language: Clean. Okay, all the British slang did start to get on my nerves a little. :)
Moral: Kit needed to learn to trust/depend on God despite her circumstances--always a good moral.
Plot: The plot kept me turning pages. This wasn't a typical English romance. It was more of an English action/adventure novel. Which I loved! I did get a little confused about some aspects of the plot, but that wasn't a big deal.
Romance: Clean. But the attraction between Jackson and Kit seemed to be mainly physical, and I thought some of the descriptions became a little too much at times.
Writing: I really appreciated the writing. It was fast-paced, but it also had an old-fashioned feeling that fit the book's time period.
Overall: I actually liked an English book! I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction, historical romance, and action/adventure stories.

A sweet story laced with adventure, romance and mystery. Jackson Forge finds himself in the bustling streets of London as a inexperienced constable. He’s living his dream job and can’t get anything right. Mysteriously people are disappearing and he is going to find out why. Kit Turner’s show up in the story and her presences is a force to be reckoned with. She’s fearless, smart and dangerously protective.
There was a little bit of what I call, “we can’t be together” thing going on, but I pushed past it. I dislike reading about people who spend most of a book doing that.
I recommended this to fans of historical fiction that like Laura Frantz and Jody Hedlund.

What an absolutely delightful mystery! A fast paced adventure through the
