Jess Lochlen is on a double mission – to recover her captured infant cousin, and to determine if treachery is stalking the Rogrovian throne. With their divided loyalties to different princes, her cousins turn out to be more hindrance than help. So when a young fugitive attaches himself to her, she is not as quick to be rid of him as she might.

But as his feelings for her grow, and their journey across his homeland becomes a race against time – to save not just her cousin but an heir to the throne – can she trust him to be who he claims to be? For otherworldly creatures accosting them along the way are strangely wary of him. Will he turn out to be the support she desperately needs, or an error of judgment that will have disastrous consequences for the entire realm and beyond?

Excerpt:

Just a song. Just another sad, love song, that was all, naught more.
But a song that made a grown man’s color fade from his face. A song that made his lady cry. A song that spoke of love and loss, and more, of worlds where time was a factor gone astray. Where a traveling stranger went away for a hand of years and returned to find half a century gone by.
Different worlds kept different times, he supposed that was the moral behind the tale. As if there were truly worlds and worlds, as natural as lands and lands.
He ran his fingers through his hair, thinking and thinking himself to sleep. Dreams assailed him throughout that long night, dreams of him and his lady separated, rent apart by the vagaries of time and space.
And in his dreams, he kept losing her, following and searching the heavens from afar. And in his dreams, the Argentene no longer shone, less the one significant star.
And in his dreams, his lady’s footsteps faded into the Lakes, the unhallowed lakes through which he could not follow. And in his dreams, the seasons slowly passed, till the fertile earth turned fallow. And still, still, he found her not.
And in his dreams, he feared he would grow old while searching his world for her. Till he threw himself in one unhallowed lake, and passaged his way to the stars.

A powerful and inspiring tale, it’s easy to get lost in the pages of the epic world that the author has created in these pages. With plenty of suspense, romance, tragedy, hope, and betrayal, it’s easy to get lost in the lives of these characters. I loved how easily the character development occurred and how much different everyone was at the end of the story for all that had happened.

Especially Jess. She was both strong and compassionate, a character that was both easy to understand and root for. Her quick-wits and intelligence made her my favorite almost at once. It couldn’t be easy to manage all that she did, but she was strong from page one all the way to the end.

This is a strong opening to a series with a lot of potential. Fans of epic poems will definitely enjoy this roller coaster of a high fantasy book!

This story is truly a magical adventure of high fantasy and romance. Ms. Hall has an amazing grasp of language and a beautifully poetic voice! It’s reminiscent of an epic poem and Arthurian legends and takes you to another time and place full of myth and mystery with its magically lyrical prose and wonderful characters. Jess, the enigmatic and kick-ass female warrior, whisks you right along with her aspiring liegeman, Corryn, on a mysterious and magical journey that you won’t want to put aside until it all comes to light!

Very entertaining. Would recommend to other fantasy readers who enjoy beautiful prose in a more classical old-school style of writing. If you like epic poetry, you'll probably love this.

I was lucky enough to receive an early copy for review and is it too early to say I am eagerly awaiting book 2? I’m not generally a fantasy reader, but endearing characters and a well-built world won me over in Silvermist.

I came here from reading Hall’s romantic fantasy series: The Seasons Cycle, so I was already fairly well-versed in her world, but this story took a turn to high adventure and didn’t let up. There’s danger and mystery, sword fights and magic.

Jess is someone to be reckoned with and her innate talents make her easy to love as a character, and easy to love for Corryn, the outcast who’s been waiting for her return for far too long. He’s the sad puppy that Jess can’t push away and watching him (very slowly) win her over brings a wonderful heart to this story. I couldn’t help but root for him at each step, even when the odds seem overwhelming against him.

I can’t wait for book 2!
