I enjoyed this, though its pretty far fetched. I wouldn't have enjoyed quite so much death if it was realistic.
I wasn't always sure whose viewpoint I was in, it switched so often, but that usually got resolved pretty quickly. One funny thing was how talented this group of people were, all fantastic at something useful to a group of people in an apocalypse.
And I didn't get the bunker. If you have a bunker, why would you leave it when under attack to go to an orchard?

Not for me
Could have been a good book but the vulgar language is a real turn off. I decided I could find a better book really easy!

I read this book because it had a good story line. However, way too many uses of the F word and cussing. If you like that in a novel, go for it. Me, nope. I'll skip this

I am not a fan of the narrative always being in the present tense; it tends to read like a movie script or play. The switching between Rick and Gabby in first person was often very confusing and I had to try to guess who was actually speaking, especially after they were all back on the farm. The general sentiment of "city people stupid and bad" and "country people smart and good" was a bit annoying. All of the prepping, including with knowledge of the effect of a CME/EMP, and they did not invest in communication equipment for the large farm? Towards the end, they hear a broadcast that the government is making good headway in restoring power. The U.S. government's own assessment of such an event suggests that it would take years to restore anything because of the damage to the large transformers and other equipment and the fact that replacements are not available and there would be no good way to manufacture them. The Negan-like megalomaniac is a fairly common element in this type of story and had a predictable outcome. Boy that Rick was a lucky, lucky guy to have managed to dispose of the bad guys with only a few injuries to himself. Almost so lucky that it was not quite believable, nor was the general propensity for the single people to try to hook up nor Jun (who I liked) to be so capable that she might have been able to rebuild the defunct transformers. I did enjoy the story for the most part, though these issues were bothersome.

This is book twenty eight in the EMP Survival in a Powerless World series, written by numerous different authors. The main characters in this tale are Rick Erickson, his wife Gaby and son Troy. Rick is on their farm with his farm manager Iona and Chuck, one of his longest serving ranch hands. They have about three hundred acres on their farm outside the city and raise a small herd of cattle, goats and chickens. Gabby and Troy are in Chicago visiting a wealthy businessman who supposedly wants to buy some of their horses. He refused to come to the farm and see the horse, as he ‘doesn’t do farms’! Even though he has one himself, as everyone who can does, according to him. Not Gabby’s type of person at all and she hates having to come into the city. They are on their way out of the office building when the EMP hits and have to try and get out and back to her apartment in the city. Her husband Rick had warned her about this sort of event, as he is a kind of prepper, but not a super extreme one. As they exit the building they meet a young woman called Jun and allow her to tag along. She will have a big part in helping the family in the days to come. Back at the ranch, Rick knows what has happened and has to organise matters at the farm and sort out what all his employees will do. Allowing those who want to go back to their homes, to do so, but also giving them the choice to bring their families back and stay on the farm. He knows matters are going to decline into mayhem and murder very quickly, especially when no one has any idea how widespread the issues are.
Rick leaves Iona in charge and travels to Chicago to find his wife and son, with Chuck insisting on going with him. Luckily he has an old Land Rover in his garage, as part of his prepper lifestyle, as well as his newer trucks which are now completely useless! Gabby and Troy, who are now on foot, along with Jun, have to make their way to her truck first to pick up something, including a gun, then to her apartment, which is their arranged meeting point. The drive to Chicago is not quite as easy as hoped, as they have to drive around a lot of obstacles on the roads and it seems some criminals have already started to take advantage of the EMP and are willing to take stuff from others by force. Al well as a group of homegrown thugs who see this as their chance to take over the country and take anything in their way! Both Rick and Gabby, as well as those with them, will find themselves in some dangerous situations, as they travel to meet up and even more danger on the way home and once they are there. These sort of life and death survival situations always have a bad guy and the main one in this tale is called Mason, and he causes chaos and death in towns very close to home for the Ericksons. They need to protect their farm and all the people they consider family, from any who would try and take what they have. There are some really fascinating and complex characters in the story and even the chance of some romance amidst the danger. They have to grab life and love whilst they can, as none of them know if they will still be alive in the days to come. A great family EMP story, with preppers who are willing to take others into their family and home, but protect all against those who would wish them harm! I believe this is a very interesting book and one that should even be considered to make a movie from. Turn off the TV and sit back and read,The Homestead, and treat it like a TV series, if you can possibly put it down once you start reading, that is!
Yeah oh, I know! I only gave it for Adam five possible starts. I have my reason or picking that number, but I'm not going to tell you why. I'll leave that to each and everyone who takes the time to read this great, funny, full of danger and exciting book. It's a really good book and I would beg to be proven different. Now it's your turn to decide weather to watch some old riri TV show or to read a really really., good book. A really great book and a super author are awaiting you!

good story but confusing POV
I enjoyed this story, but the bouncing back-and-forth of the point of view between Rick and Gabrielle was a little confusing. It might have been less confusing if each chapter started with the name of the person who was the POV, instead of just a chapter number. The story was good, but there were some odd omissions in the story that didn’t make sense. For example, when Chuck and Rick are stopped on the bridge on the way to Chicago. Cars pull in front of them and behind them to block the way. Once they shoot and conquer the bad guys, suddenly they’re just able to drive across the bridge without having to move the vehicles. just little things like that. If it weren’t for those two complaints, I have given it five stars.

Just too scary!
I sincerely hope this whole storyline remains fiction! I read this in one day because I just had to! So scary! After seeing how badly so many have acted during the pandemic and knowing how helpless we are when there are power outages, this is totally believable! This book would really make a blockbuster movie! Or, maybe a series? One that would wake people up? Talk about a confrontation of good and evil! My many years of being involved in Scouting was all about being prepared, being a good neighbor; how many are learning those lessons now? How many would survive? Very thought-provoking book!

Another one for the hit parade!!
I want to thank Mr.Wise for this book. I had a fantastic few hours away from my world and emerged into another time. Very well written to say the least. The people are detailed and scenes so real I could be there watching each person as they tried to survive in a harsh new world.. Amazing!!

The preppers have it right!
"The Homestead EMP" was engaging from the very first sentence. The more I read brought the story into focus and gave me an insight as to what could happen to our country or the world if an EMP ever went off.
I will be looking for other books by Clay Wise.

Homestead review
Amazing story. I feel as if I know every one of the characters personally. I've often thought about what might happen after an EMP and now I have a clearer picture. They did seem to have almost an unrealistic source of provisions and weapons, but then consider where they were! Loved it.

Great Story
Thank you for this book with a positive ending that is realistic. You characters were well developed as was your story line. I am not a writer and would not presume to critique your skills. I do know that putting this book down was difficult but I also know that I looked forward to my time when when I could sit down and read it. Thank you Clay Wise

Great read!
Great read! EMP strands the world band destroys Civilization as we know it. Civilization dissolves into chaos! Common sense and decency fall to the wayside. Even those prepared for the apocalypse like the Ericsson family! Gabby and her son Troy are stranded in Chicago...hubby and father Eric head to rescue! Bad people turn more evil!

Fast Paced
When you begin this book be sure to have enough time set aside to finish so you don't miss out sleep! While I question some time references on events I also wonder about the setting in the middle of prime corn and bean farms but the story still kept me turning pages!

an ok read
The book it told in a first person husband/wife and it gets confusing because I couldn't tell who was talking until halfway through a chapter at times
The beginning of the book was flat with no explanation of why the mother and son were in Chicago and for a group of supposedly close people the son seemed to be an afterthought. I've read much better EMP books

It's a common storyline, so nothing really new and exciting in this type of post-EMP book. Author found it necessary to use the f-word literally dozens of times throughout the book (sometimes 5 or 6 times in same sentence)...it's an unintelligent word that adds zero value to the story. Won't listen to anymore titles from this author if that's all he has to offer.

Very good read. Captures the reader and keeps you going. Its hard to believe mankind would sink so low in their neighbors time of need,but if or when it happens hopefully there will be more people like Rick and Gabby than Mason and his group.

Good read about a fa!Ily of peppers near Chicago.
Characters are realistic as are most events in the book. This group didn't have millions to spend but managed to survive and help others.

A good story!
I will first address criticism. Each entry should start with the name of the speaker. Sometimes, not until the middle do we know who was/is speaking. Otherwise, A great story! Very adventurous and enlightening!

Similar to others
I thought this was a good story. Spoiler alert.... I particularly liked it because of the good ending. The only issue I had was not being sure who the narrator was, Rick or Gabbie, but figured it out fairly quickly and liked the different perspectives.

The Homestead EMP: EMP Survival in Powerless World. This book was easy to read and understand. The author did an excellent job of making characters real, believable and interesting. The plot was easy to follow.

Not my favorite in this genre
Foul language throughout was off-putting and unnecessary. Many authors do a better, more cohesive storyline. Each chapter could have been headed with the name of the character whose viewpoint we were getting, as it changed constantly.

Great SHTF Story
Engrossing from the first page, I read it in one night! The only reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is that there were several times when it wasn't apparent who was speaking. That being said, it was a very good story.

Good book
Good book. Set in modern times without too much prepper/ end of world disaster and drama. No terrorists from other countries taking over the US that so many other books rely on.
Would recommend.

Another superb EMP survival story.
Well written, excellent story. Keeps you attention and adrenaline going throughout. Non stop entertainment. I would recommend to anyone who likes this genre.
